Abstract

Cloud Computing is a pay-per-use model for enabling available, convenient, on-demand

network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks,
servers, storage, applications, services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with
minimal management effort or service provider interaction. The cloud is a virtualization
of resources that maintains and manages itself. Furthermore, it deals about how the user
can securely access data, resources and services to fulfill their dynamically changing
needs. Institutions of higher education, such as universities and colleges, are the core of
innovation through their advanced research and development. Unfortunately, some of the
limitations that confront such institutions are not the lack of ideas but rather repeated
budget cuts, limited on-campus computing resources and lack of a unified storage media
that are scattered around campus computers. Subsequently, universities may benefit
greatly by harnessing the power of Cloud Computing, including cost cutting as well as all
the above types of cloud services. However, before full adoption, universities must
consider key issues, which include, among others, migration tradeoffs and security. This
paper explores the application of Cloud Computing in higher education and touches upon
some of its aspired benefits as well as its expected limitations.

3
Objective

Cloud Computing lets any organization tap its enormous power for scalable, cost-
effective IT infrastructure on demand, while maintaining complete control and flexibility.
The objective of our research is to explain how Cloud Computing can support
educational institutions to resolve some of the common challenges like reduction of cost
and provide flexibility and accessibility.

4
Scope

Adopting a Cloud Computing strategy can help educational institutions conduct their core
activities with less hassle and greater efficiency. However, there are also concerns that
may arise related to Cloud Computing adoption and security. Our Research Paper
includes:
a) Introduction to Cloud Computing and its characteristics.
b) Effective use of Cloud Computing in educational institutions.
c) Benefits of Educational Cloud Computing.
d) Adoption and Security concerns.

5
Problem Statement

We study the problem of how to create a Cloud Computing infrastructure for educational
institutions that lets students, faculty, staff, administrators, and other campus user’s to
access file storage, e-mail, databases, and other applications anywhere, on-demand.
In our research following questions are addressed:

1) How does Cloud Computing model is useful for educational institutions?

2) What are the challenges in using an existing infrastructure combined with Cloud
Computing for educational institutions?
3) How does the efficiencies of Cloud Computing can help educational institutions
to keep pace with ever-growing resource requirements and energy costs?
4) How does Cloud Computing enables institutions to teach students in new,
different ways and help them manage projects and massive workloads?
5) In what ways does a Cloud Computing platform succeed and fail to meet the
requirements of the educational institutes?

6
Future Scope

The future of “Cloud Computing in Educational Institutions” is ABOVE-CAMPUS

services. When colleges and universities consider this next era of IT services in a larger
strategic context, the term ABOVE-CAMPUS services may frame institutional objectives
for IT service aggregation better than the common, all-industries notion of clouds.
ABOVE-CAMPUS means that for a particular IT service, a sufficient level of
aggregation for efficiency cannot be achieved within one campus but, rather, must be
achieved at a higher level of aggregation, beyond a single institution. Three models for
aggregating IT “ABOVE-CAMPUS” services particularly suited to higher education are:-
Commercial Sourcing, Institutional Sourcing, and Consortium Sourcing.

7
Conclusion

Cloud computing as an exciting development is a significant alternative from today’s

educational perspective. Students and administrative personnel have the opportunity to
quickly and economically access various application platforms and resources through the
web pages on-demand. This automatically reduces the cost of organizational expenses
and offers more powerful functional capabilities.

While cost savings and flexibility are benefits to the use of cloud computing, the
downside of such service adoption could include possible risks to privacy and
security. But ultimately cloud computing could provide a means to stretch limited
resources and make them more useful, to more people, more of the time.

In future, Above-campus IT service offerings will ultimately empower faculty and

students to customize, remix, and reuse information for their local needs and will provide
staff with access to the latest tools and services developed by the best and the brightest
that higher education has to offer.
