1.3 Operations

This section outlines the operation of mechanism unit, controller, and power supply of the
image scanner.

1.3.1 Mechanism operation

The image scanner consists of a carrier unit, optical unit, mechanism unit, and automatic
document feeder (ADF) unit. The carrier unit and optical unit consists of a CCD image
sensor, lens, and lamp. The mechanism unit has a motor that actuates the carrier unit. The
ADF unit feeds the paper on the chute to the stacker tray one by one.

When the scanner is turned on, the lamp lights and the carrier unit moves to the home
position at the left of the image scanner. If the paper remains in the transfer path, the paper
is ejected, the scanner unit moves to the home position , and then the image scanner awaits
a command from the host.

(1) ADF operation

When the image scanner receives an ADF read command, the ADF motor starts and a
bottommost document placed faced down on the chute is fed by the ADF unit. When the
paper size sensor turns on, the ADF motor stops after inching by a specified number of
pulses.

Next the carrier unit reads the white reference (White level registration; this is done by
specified interval.), then the carrier unit moves to the ADF read position at the left of the
image scanner.

Next, the ADF motor starts rotation to feed the paper. After the TOP sensor detects the
edge of the paper, the scanner starts to count the motor pulses so that the scanner starts to
read just from the leading edge of the paper. Then the paper is stacked on the stacker. If all
of the paper on the hopper is read and stacked, the ADF motor stops and the scanner awaits
for next command from the host.

In carrier unit and optical unit, the lamp illuminates the document, and the reflected light
from the document is collected by the mirrors and lens into the CCD. The CCD converts
the light into electrical signals for image processing.

(2) Flatbed operation

When the image scanner received a flatbed read command, the carrier unit reads the white
reference, then move to the night to start reading from the specified position. When read
operation is completed, the carrier unit moves to the home position, and then the image
scanner awaits for the next command.

In carrier unit, the lamp illuminates the document, and the reflected light from the docu-
ment is collected by the mirrors and a lens into the CCD. The CCD converts the light into
electrical signals for image processing.

(2) Interface

The M4097D scanner contains a SCSI interface and a third party slot interface. Note,
however, that both interfaces cannot be used at the same time. If the Fujitsu Video
Interface Option Board is installed in the third party slot, the scanner automatically
detects the board and disables the SCSI interface.
Also, when the Video Interface Option Board is used, support is available for the video
interface used with the M3097E or M3097DE.

The following Errors and Alarms are checked during reading or Test feed mode.

(1) Temporary error

The following table lists temporary errors generated by the scanner and displayed via the
operator panel. The operator with a minimum amount of training or experience operating
the scanner can generally correct temporary errors.

Error Operator Panel Sensor conditions

Display
Miss pick Paper Jam PAPER EMPTY to OMR (3.8 inches). If OMR is not ac-
tive within 6 tries, a Paper Jam error is generated. There is
a pause between each retry.
Paper Jam Paper Jam OMR to TOF. OMR is made but TOF has not been made
after turning paper feed rollers 15". The scanner will at-
tempt to clear this condition automatically 3 times. There
is a pause between each retry.
Paper Jam Paper Jam TOF sensor on and does not go off within 20.4 inches of
feeding. Then Paper Jam is detected. This error is cleared
by the operator by opening the ADF and removing the docu-
ment.
Double Feed Double Feed Error Length of first document is measured by TOF sensor.
Subsequent documents are measured by TOF sensor. If
document is +/-10, 15 or 20mm of first document an error
is generated. At this time feeding stops so doc is in eject
rollers. Default for value for double feed detection is off.
This error is cleared by the operator by opening the ADF
and removing the document.
Paper Empty Paper Empty If no paper detected when Start command or Object Posi-
tion command is received Hopper Empty is generated.

(2) Alarm

The following table lists hardware alarms generated by the scanner and displayed via the
operator panel. Hardware alarms will normally require field service by trained personal.

LCD display Conditions

1 Optical Alarm (F) Only generated when start command is received or when white level
or reference is checked (every 50 scans). CCD output must be above
Optical Alarm (B) predetermined slice level when reading the white reference. Slice level
is set in F/W and compared to the read range values. The read range is
approximately pixel 120 to 4800. If CCD output does not reach slice
level the AGC tries to adjust the output of the amplifier to exceed the
slice level. If any portion of the read range is lower than slice then
Optical Alarm is generated. Can be generated by dirty optics or refer-
ence, bad lamp or CCD.
2 Mechanical Alarm After power on, carrier unit is moved to home position. Home position
is determined by activation of home position sensor. Failure is deter-
mined by home position sensor not active within certain number of steps.
Failure can be caused by a bad sensor, motor or carrier belt.
3 Check Shipping If a mechanical alarm occurs when the total number of sheets scanned
Lock by ADF is less than 100, a message and Mechanical Alarm are dis-
played alternately.
4 Motorfuse Alarm Generated immediately after the fuse is blown. Fuse is common for
carrier motor and ADF motor. Fuse is soldered to controller therefore
controller replacement is required to repair.
5 Lampfuse Alarm There two fuses one for the front one for the back lamp. Alarm is gen-
erated immediately upon failure. Fuse is soldered to controller there-
fore controller replacement is required to repair.
6 Memory Alarm If amount of memory can not be determined or if a memory location
within detected memory returns an incorrect test value, alarm is gener-
ated. Only first 4Mb of memory are checked during power on diagnos-
tic. Entire memory range is checked during offline test.
7 EEPROM Alarm 128 byte EEPROM is divided into two equal 64 byte halves. The sec-
ond stores the opposite values of the first. If there is ever a miss-com-
pare then an alarm is generated. This is a common usage in industry.
(See Section 3.2.5)
8 Image Transfer Alarm The image data exceeds the memory installed. Or, the host computer
can not process data transformation. Mounting the Extended memory
or upgrading the computer may be necessary.
9 FAN Alarm The FAN near power supply does not rotate.
10 SCSI fuse Alarm The protector for SCSI interface has been activated.
The alarm indicates that power is not being supplied to the +5V line
of the SCSI interface. The +5V line may be short-circuited to the
ground line. When the problem has been corrected, the protector
automatically returns to the normal state.

CHAPTER 4 MAINTENANCE

This chapter explains the procedures for maintaining proper operation of the image scanner, such as
cleaning, spare parts replacement, setting, lubrication as well as various test modes used for mainte-
nance. No further component or sub-assembly repairs are recommended.

4.1 Outline
4.2 Cleaning
4.3 Maintenance Tools
4.4 Maintenance Parts
4.5 Non-replacement Parts
4.6 Parts Replacement
4.7 Adjustment and Lubrication
4.8 Test Modes for Maintenance
4.9 Parts Requiring Periodic Replacement

4-1
4.1 Outline

Section 4.2 or later gives instructions for maintenance necessary for proper and stable
operation of the image scanner.

A periodic inspection should be performed every six months or 100,000 pages whichever
comes first.

Especially, clean the ADF and carrier units thoroughly. Cleaning intervals for the ADF
unit depend on the document type and paper material. Request the user to clean the ADF
unit on how frequent they use and the document type read using the image scanner.

4-2
4.2 Cleaning

This section explains how to clean each unit of the image scanner. The cleaning described
by the Section 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 are recommended to be done by the user.

4.2.1 Cleaning the document cover, document holder, and scan glass.

Clean these units (Figure 4.1) as follows:

- Clean these units using dry cloths or with a small amount of neutral detergent. Avoid
using organic solvents such as paint thinner.

- Be careful not to allow ingress of water inside the image scanner.

Document cover Cloth

Document holder
Scan glass

- Neutral detergent
- Ethyl alcohol
- Isopropyl alcohol

Figure 4.1 Cleaning the document cover, document holder, and scan glass

4.2.2 Cleaning the ADF unit

The cleaning intervals for the automatic document feeder (ADF) unit are every 5,000 pages
of paper.

This cleaning interval is only a guideline. The user should schedule cleaning depending on
the document type, paper quality, and copy quality.

For proper operation of the ADFs, users are requested to clean the ADF periodically.
