Q.3 (b) Read the following paragraph and answer the questions: 04
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right
lane when suddenly a car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi
driver slammed on his breaks. The driver of the other car whipped his head around and
started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was
very friendly.
So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to
the hospital!’ This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call ‘The Law of the
Garbage Truck’. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run
around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their
garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.
Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their
garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the street. The bottom line
is that successful people don’t let garbage trucks take over their day.

Q.5 (a) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follows:
(Do not reproduce parts of the passage but report answers in yours own language)
The function of the machine is to save work. In a fully mechanized world all the dull
drudgery will be done by machinery, leaving us free for more interesting pursuits. At first
sight, this seems a splendid idea. It makes one sick to see half a dozen men toiling
mindlessly to dig a trench for a water-pipe, when some suitable machine would scoop
the earth out in a couple of minutes. Why not let the machine does the work so that the
men can go and do something else? But presently the question arises what else they to
do? Supposedly they are set free from something they consider to be work in order that
they may do something which for them is not “work”. But what is work and what is not
work? Is it work to dig, to plant trees, to rid, to hunt, to feed chickens, to play the piano,
to build a house, to cook, to mend motor bicycles? All of these things are work to
somebody, and all of them are play to somebody. There are in fact very few activities
which cannot be classed as either work or play according to the circumstances.

A human being needs work and usually looks for it, though he may not call it work. Man
is not only a kind of walking stomach; he also has two hands, two eyes and a brain.
Consider those half-dozen men again who are digging the trench for the water-pipe. Let
us imagine that a machine has set them free from digging the trench and they are free
to choose to do something else. But their freedom of choice is an illusion because,
whatever they want to do, they will find that another machine has set them free that.

The tendency of mechanical progress is to frustrate the human need for effort and
creativity. It makes unnecessary and even impossible the activities of the eye and the
hand.

Some people may be hostile to machines, but this attitude is pointless because of the
obvious fact that the machine has come to stay. The machine has to be accepted, but it
is probably best to accept it rather as one accepts a pain-killing drug.
Required:
(a) Apart from saving us work, what else, according to the passage, makes the use of 02
machinery attractive?
