The Best Boat for You

It’s 1:00 a.m. when your eyes pop open and you sit up
straight in bed. You quickly check your room-no, noth-
ing’s there. The smell of the outdoors is gone and the
sound of your friends laughing and having a good
time has faded. It was that dream again! That dream
that won’t go away, that dream that’s haunted you for
months, that dream that started when your friend Lou
took the plunge...literally. It’s that dream of becoming a
boat owner.
As with a new car, a boat can be a major investment.
And as with a car, you want to buy the boat that’s right
for you. The type of boat you should purchase depends
on how you intend to use it. Here is some information
about different types of boats and what purpose they
serve.
Are you taking to the water to catch fish? If reeling in
the big one is your reason for buying a boat, you’ll want
a fishing boat. There are several available. All-purpose
fishing boats are usually designed for one to four people
and can be hauled by a trailer. They can cost anywhere
from a few thousand to several thousand. Bass boats are
built for speed. They are outfitted with electronics and
loads of storage space for gear and almost always out-
board powered, allowing them to reach speeds of over
60 mph. Bass boats generally cost more than all-purpose
fishing boats. Center-console boats have the controls in
the center of the craft, giving anglers more places on
deck to cast their line. Some also have small cabins. They
can usually hold up to six people and be
hauled by a trailer. Center-console boats

waves, maybe a power boat is for you.
There are many types available from in-
flatable versions to yachts. Inflatable boats
are easy to transport and can be used for

Getting Ready to Get Teed Off, Er, Tee Off

Spring is here and you know what that means. It’s golf
season, and it’s time to get your arms limbered up and in
shape so you can fling your golf clubs in disgust to new
and amazing lengths this year. But maybe, just maybe,
you can scatter a few good golf shots in-between. Here
are some pointers to help you get in shape and get the
best out of both pursuits this year.
Actually, a lot of these pointers are probably unnecessary
because we know you’ve been keeping yourself in great
shape during the winter months. You’ve been hitting the
weights so your arms are ready to drive that first ball
300 yards down the fairway, or, failing that, heave that
first club in anger, right? What’s that? Your arms aren’t
in shape and the only exercise they’ve been getting has
been lifting frosty mugs of beer from the bar table to
your mouth? Well, at least you’re in shape for what hap-
pens after the round...
But seriously, it’s time to get in shape-well, golfer shape
anyway. Start with some cardiovascular workouts. If
you’ve got a jogging or running routine going already,
great. Keep up the good work. If you don’t, don’t start
now. You don’t want an injury derailing the start of your
season. Instead, get your cardiovascular exercise through
walking, slowly at first and then building to a more brisk
pace after a couple weeks. Try for a mile or so to begin
with and build up from there.
Stretching exercises are also important. A good exercise
is bending over 92 times over the course of four hours.
Why would you do this type of exercise? It’s to simulate
the number of times you’ll have to bend over during a
typical round in March or April to move leaves off your
ball. If you’re one of these hardcore golfers who plan to
play 36 holes from the get-go, bend over 199 times over
nine hours. You probably noticed it wasn’t an additional
92 strokes for the second 18 but, instead, 15 more times.
Surely you don’t think your second round will produce
a better score than your first, do you? It won’t. For one
thing, you’ll be fatigued and you’ll be sick and tired of
bending over to move leaves off your ball. But fret not.
With any luck at all, your club heaving distance will im-
prove on your second 18. If it doesn’t, you’ll need more
practice and we’re sure you’ll get it as the season goes
on.
It’s possible that last year you flung so many clubs so far
away-or into certain bodies of water-that you need new
clubs. If that’s the case, make sure they’re fit to match
your body and the way you swing. But when you get
your new friends, don’t get too attached to them, be-
cause they might not be around for long and may end
up in the same bodies of water.
If you aren’t getting new clubs, perhaps it’s time to con-
sider new grips. New grips can help you groove your
swing to get the consistency you want to lower your
score and increase your flinging distance.
Speaking of equipment, don’t neglect your shoes. If you
see any toes sticking out of your shoes, it’s probably time
for new ones. If you don’t see any toes, check your spikes
to see if they need replacement. You want to make sure
they’re in good shape so you can get a good hip rotation
on your shots. You also want to make sure they’re in good
shape so you have good traction to quickly retrieve an
errant club that didn’t quite get the distance you wanted
