My Vishu
Kripa Chandran (Republished from a previous issue)
(D/O Geetha Chandran)
It’s a lovely spring morning and the birds are singing merrily.
When I wake up on Vishu morning, the first thing I see is Your Divine face.
With Your playful eyes, chubby cheeks, and adorable smile,
Lord Krishna, I feel blessed and I know I am ready for the year,
And to overcome all obstacles.
Jyothi Lakshman
This is my first contribution to Navaneetam magazine – this is also one of the first experiences
I had with Lord Guruvayoorappan. The moderator may go through my below experience and
do the needful.
One of our cousins, who stays very close to our house, conducts Narayaneeyam classes
regularly in her house. Unfortunately, I have not been able to attend the classes as it takes
place during my working days & hours. This group also keeps having the "Narayaneeyam
Parayanam" very regularly in each others houses.Again, I have not attended as it takes place
during the working days.
On one such occasion, one morning my cousin called me to inform me about the Parayanam
in their house. As this was conducted on a Wednesday morning, I felt bad as I would not be
able to attend. I silently prayed to
Guruyavoorappan asking him to make it possible for me to attend it sometime, and left to the
office with a heavy heart.
Little did I realize that Lord Krishna was already waiting for me at the office that morning !
When I reached the office, one of my colleagues handed over to me the Sugar & Butter from
Guruvayoor !! I felt it was Krishna's way of telling me "Don't worry, I am with you always !" I
just kept starting at the prasadam for a long time before consuming it. The same evening, I
shared this prasadam with my cousin who was conducting the Parayanam – she was very
thrilled and excited to receive Bhagawan's prasadam on the same day of her Parayanam.

The devotee worships and prays to Sri Ganapathi (inside the temple also) and performs “ Dhorbhi
karanam” (catches both his ears with his hands and sits and stands up, alternatively, at least three times
and requests Him to pardon him for all his sins committed, knowingly or unknowingly and to grant him all
his desires. Sri Ganapathi too, so merciful He is, forgives him and grants all his desires. What He
expects is simple “Dhorbhi Karanam”. If any one ignores Him, he gets into unexpected and serious
difficulties and obstacles. But all these vanish, once the devotee repents and performs Dhorbhi
Karanam. That is why He is described as Sri Vigneswara or Sri Vinayaka. Incidentally, Dhorbhi-karanam
is good for physical and mentally health also.
Some ardent devotees of Sri Ganesa recite the various hymns including Sri Adi Sankara’s Sri Ganesa
Pancha Ratnam and Bhagawan Deva Rishi Narada’s Sankata Nasana Ganesa Sthothram etc., After
worshipping Him, from the heart of hearts, the devotee moves on, to the inner Prakaram and observes
the images sculptured on the stone pillars, one by one.
Sri Lakshmi Narayana seated on Sri Adi Sesha in the Milky Ocean and Brahmadeva sitting on the
Lotus coming out of the navel of Sriman Narayana!
After Sri Ganesh Darsan, the devotee then moves left (clockwise) inside the Inner Prakaram. On the first
left pillar facing North, he finds a beautiful picture of Sriman Narayana and Lakshmi Devi, both seated on
Adi Sesha in the Milky Ocean and Sri Brahma Deva seated on a Lotus flower, whose stem emanates
from the navel of Sriman Narayana (Padma Nabha).
On seeing this beautiful image, the devotee starts surfing on thought waves: The holy Moorthi of Sri
Guruvayurappan was originally worshipped by Sriman Narayana Himself at His Abode Sri Vaikuntam
and subsesquently passed on to
Brahma Deva ,when the latter prayed to Him for help at the time of Creation; Brahma Deva also
worshipped the Moorthi for some time at the early stages of Creation. He then passed It on to Raja
Suthapas; After Raja Suthapas, the Moorthi was worshipped by Rishi Kashyapa and his wife Adithi Devi,
during Sri Vamana Avatharam at Siddhasramam. All this happened in
Kritha Yuga or Satya Yuga; In Dwapara Yuga, It reached Sri Krishna at Dwaraka thru Dhowmya Rishi
and was
worshipped by Him at Dwaraka; and In Kali Yuga, the holy Moorthi traveled all the way from Dwaraka to
Guruvayur, to
bless the people in Kali Yuga also.
O Sri Lakshmi Narayana! How to describe Your Mercy and concern towards Your Kali Yuga devotees?
Our heart felt Namaskarams to all the three of you again and again! He then concludes by chanting:
Translit:
Om! Narayanaya Vidmahe!
Vasudevaya Dheemehi!!
Thanno Vishnuh prachodayath!!!
Om! Mahadevyai cha Vidmahe!
Vishnu Patnyai cha Dheemahi!!
Thanno Lakshmeeh prachodayath!!!
Sree Haraye Namah!
BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM
(Continuation from the March 2011 issue of Navaneetham)
(Collected by M P R Nair)
[BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM is a Book written in Malayalam, based on Srimad Bhagavatham, by Sadguru Sreemad Abhedanandaji
Maharaj of Abhedashramam, Trivandrum, Kerala. Sampoojya Swamiji attained Maha Samadhi and left his mortal coil on 29th October
1983. The Book, ‘Bhagavatha Dharmam’ contains 1060 Soothras (Axioms) which bring out the essence of Srimad Bhagavatham. This
Book has been translated into English by Shri: P. N. Balakrishnan Nair, (formerly Senior Deputy Accountant General, Kerala), a devoted
disciple of Swamiji Maharaj. It is being serially published in our Magazine from September 2010 onwards. This part covers Axioms from
536 to 722, covering so far 8 Skandhas.
P.N.B has informed me that it is proposed to print it as a donation to Abhedashramam, the rightful owner of the book, and that if there are
interested readers, who want the Book, they can also join the venture by sponsoring a few copies each.]
536. To think and say that “I have no ego” is also an expression of ego.
538. A man who preaches spiritual knowledge to others and acts in a manner contrary to his own preaching, is a devil.
541. A woman who prevents her husband from sinful acts by wise counsel is just wife. But the woman who can lead her husband to the
path of spirituality is righteous wife.
542. Normally voluptuous men are easily influenced by women. Therefore, a wife can easily bring her husband to the path of
righteousness. A good wife can as well make her husband devoted to God.
543. If yogic practice is not based on pure intentions, downfall of that yogi is certain. Although superhuman powers can be attained
through yogic practice; God-realization which is the ultimate goal of human birth cannot be achieved.
544. Enjoyment of pleasures does not give satisfaction. Renunciation alone gives satisfaction.
545. The world is more akin to selfishness and deception. Even marital relationships are often found to be filled with selfishness and
deception.
546. A son can uplift only his own family. But a daughter can uplift not only the family of her parents but that of her husband also.
547. It is good to work for the uplift of society; but it often gives rise to ego.
548. No one becomes devoted to God by the advice of others. Devotion comes only through God’s grace.
549. A man whose vision is perverted sees everything in the world perversely; that is to say, he sees justice as injustice and injustice as
justice.
550. In old age man is interested only in pampering his body and consequently he becomes totally incapable of worshipping God.
551. Living creatures get birth as a human being, which is rare and difficult to get, only after undergoing births and deaths in many other
species.
552. Happiness and unhappiness depend upon the results of our past actions.
553. It is our own weakness of mind that causes hindrance to God’s worship.
555. One who sees God everywhere does not see this world as such.
556. Sleep is a hindrance for listening to God’s stories and praising His glories.
557. Songs praising God, if sung with correct pitch and rhythm, will add impetus to devotion.
559. Impurities in your mind will be washed off by singing songs in praise of God.
560. Praise the Lord at the end of His story. Without singing God', listening to the stories of God will not be complete.
561. By praising God, your sins are destroyed and your mind becomes pure. Into that pure mind God enters instantaneously.
562. Vision of God is impossible without the grace of Guru. It is, therefore, essential for every man to seek refuge in a Guru or other great
souls.
563. God exists within every being. Once this wonderful fact is realized, man can see the whole world as nothing but God. Thereafter he
cannot find a place to commit sin.
564. Humility and feeling of helplessness are two trusted friends of man. God will easily accept those who possess these qualities.
Humility and feeling of helplessness will remove all obstacles in the path towards God.
566. Lead your life with the strong determination that “all my actions will be soaked in devotion to God”.
567. When your actions are pure, that is called devotion to God.
568. “My Lord is watching whatever I do”. Perform all your duties with this truth in mind
569. “My Lord is listening to whatever I talk; all my actions are supported by my Lord.” When this attitude strengthens, you attain God-
realization.
570. The feeling that God is all-pervading should become your natural attitude.
571. Only those who have controlled their senses can be said to be independent in this world. Those who are independent are self-willed.
Therefore, learn how to be independent under the guidance of a competent Guru.
572. Those who eat their God-given food, without first offering it to God, will have to die of starvation.
573. A lighted lamp illuminates your home as well as your heart. Service brings happiness to the one who serves.
574. You hesitate to prostrate before God at the temple, because of the fear that your beautiful clothes may get soiled.
575. Only the best among best things should be offered to God.
576. If your hairs stand on end or tears roll from your eyes during prayer, it means God has heard your prayer.
577. Cook food for the sake of God. Offer it to God before eating. Take the vow that “without offering to God I will not take anything for
myself.”
578. Hearing the stories of God without observing the rules for listening and understanding the essence of the stories, is a waste of time.
Retain the essence of these stories carefully in your ears and mind.
579. An image of God is better for worship than a picture. First think of a form of God. Make a beautiful pedestal according to your
financial capacity, for placing the God’s image. Do not speak during worship. If you become body-conscious during worship, prostrate
before the Lord. (Prostration is not allowed for women).Slavish attitude towards the Lord is best suited for worship.
580. If the presence of God is not felt in the image of God, it is not possible to feel the presence of God in other places and things.
581. If you worship God after committing a sin, you will feel that God is annoyed.
582. When the mind is impure, worship of God will not give satisfaction.
583. If you forget some lines while chanting the hymns of God, prostrate before the Lord and that will make the chanting complete.
584. God accepts even small offerings, and makes them big.
585. However much a devotee offers to God, he will always feel “I have been able to offer only very little to my Lord”. That is the nature
of true devotion.
587. Ordinary beings do not care for God and so God also does not care for them.
588. God is the only person deserving our love. If your heart melts and tears of joy roll from your eyes during prayer, take it that God has
accepted your prayer.
589. All our offerings to God are returned to us by Him after multiplying them many-fold.
590. Enjoyment of pleasures adds to our desires and weakens our senses. By thinking about worldly objects we lose our strength. But by
thinking about God we derive all our strength.
591. Man exceeds all limits for the enjoyment of worldly pleasures. Consequently he has to suffer all miseries arising from that. How is
God responsible for that? How can you blame God?
592. Power of discrimination may be lost when faced with extreme grief.
593. Regular intake of the nectar of God’s names and stories will bring our senses under control.
594. When worldliness and sinful thoughts occupy your mind, take recourse to the pleasure of listening to stories of God and chanting of
the nectar-like names of God. When Nama Brahma (God’s names) merges into Nada Brahma (cosmic energy in the form of sound) Para
Brahma (Cosmic Reality) shines forth.
595. Great sinners do not relish singing the hymns of Lord Sri Krishna. Their sin can, however, be mitigated by listening to the stories of
God, and by singing the hymns of God invariably.
596. Thinking about carnal pleasures is more harmful than actual enjoyment of such pleasures.
597. When you receive God’s mercy, you will have the desire to do good things.
598. People madly run after material pleasures when their minds become wicked and vulgar. Being unable to suffer even the slightest
grief, they make a big hue and cry about everything.
599. Do not even imagine that the world (Samsara) is sinful. You are responsible for all your sins; not the world. If you have sinful
tendencies in your mind, you are the only one to answer for that.
600. To love even those who hurt them is the trait of great men (Mahatmas)
601. The pleasure you derive from sex and other bodily contacts, is similar to the pleasure derived by scratching the itches on your skin;
the ultimate result being pain only.
602. Get up from bed one and a half hours before sunrise.(Brahma muhurta) Meditate , see God in your mind and pray. Pay obeisance to
Mother Earth also.
603. Lord Sri Krishna is the charioteer of your body-chariot. If you realize this truth, your chariot will definitely reach its goal. On the
contrary, if the mind which follows the senses becomes the charioteer, it will fall into deep pit and be shattered.
604. Everyday after taking bath, sit in solitude and worship God. The following are the steps of Sadhana to be followed by a beginner :-
(iv) keep company with holy men and listen to stories of God;
605. If there is love in your eyes and broadness in your mind, you will become the dearest devotees of God
606. Do not ask for anything from God. Asking for something is a kind of trading.
607. If you ask for material gains in return for your worship of God, you are a trader (Vaishya). Giving less and taking more is the trait of
a trader.
608. Lead a very humble and simple life. Keep the mind out of reach for worldly desires.
609. Desire is your greatest enemy. If you do not enjoy worldly pleasures according to your desires, your mind will get agitated. When
you enjoy worldly pleasures, desire for them will go on increasing. Therefore, keep your mind safely packed in the cloth of devotion.
610. If the son is righteous, even if his parents are not righteous, they will attain the worlds of the righteous. But if the son is unrighteous,
his parents can reach only the worlds of the unrighteous, even if they are righteous.
612. One who becomes a father has great responsibilities. A father who does not inculcate good culture in his son is his enemy.
614. Your status, wealth or knowledge will serve no purpose at the time of death.
615. The knowledge that does not help at the time if death is not real knowledge.
616. To see faults in those who live with us and to see good in those departed, is a common trait of all humans.
617. Man sometimes displays his name in front of his house, inscribes it on his ring, and even on his own body. Too much of publicity in
this manner destroys the merits of good actions.
618. Man’s real friend is righteousness (Dharma). That (Dharma) is the basis of all happiness; not riches (Dhana)
619. Truth is God in another form. There is no greater sin than untruth.
620. The desire to see everyone happy is Truth in its real form. Try to reflect this Truth always in your thoughts, words and actions.
621. Before going to bed each night, reflect in your mind thus: - “Today, have I been able to do anything that pleases my Lord.”
622. Mercy should be expressed with due care. Mercy expressed out of place may cause hindrance to worship of God.
625. When the soul gets more and more involved in worldly affairs, it cannot fully cognize all the sins committed by the mind.
626. Maintain purity of thought, word and action. That also is a great penance. Show goodwill even towards your enemies. If you do so,
God will stand by your side and punish the enemies.
627. If you feel unhappy when faced with dishonour, that means you are an egotist. On the other hand, if you humbly take refuge at the
holy feet of God, that means there is no prick of dishonour in your heart.
629. When man thinks of female body and a woman thinks of male body, their celibacy is broken. Celibacy is a great spiritual practice that
enables you to keep the mind firm.
631. Those who are contented with what God has given them are really the rich; those who are not so are destitute.
632. Avoiding idle talk is silence. Not talking mentally is also silence. Silence cleanses the mind of all sins makes it peaceful.
633. All misfortunes occurred in this world, have been caused by carnal desires. Those blinded by desires, lose their power of
discrimination.
634. Study the holy texts abundantly. When dispassion becomes strong, renounce the world and take Sannyas.
635. When husband and wife lead a pure life their life will be happy. When female company becomes holy company, a house-holder’s life
becomes most glorious.
636. A house-holder’s mind should not be too harsh or too soft. He should not be under the influence of woman.
637. When Rama is not in his heart, man becomes blind with Kama (lust)
638. Charity has a special place in the house-holder’s life. By spending money for charity, your earnings become pure.
639. A house-holder should spend at least one month in a year in solitude at holy places or the banks of holy rivers like Ganges and
worship God. Worldly subjects should never be discussed at holy places.
640. Wherever on the earth an action is performed, its impact will remain there, merged with the culture of that place.
643. If man can recall the sins committed by him, he will understand that the miseries suffered by him are not sufficient retribution for the
sins. Actually God has blessed us with much more than what we deserve.
644. Man becomes godly or devilish because of himself. It is his culture that makes a man godly or devilish.
645. Keep your tendencies at an exalted level. Company of holy men will enable you to do so.
646. Man gets transformed according to what he thinks and what he speaks.
647. Death will certainly come today or tomorrow. It first affects the legs. When the legs become cold or weak it should be understood
that death is nearing. At least at this stage man should start worshipping God.
648. When death is closing in, face it with this conviction: “When Lord Sri Krishna who is the lord of even the god of death, resides in my
heart, how can death approach me?”
649. Intellect of those who immerse too much in sexual pleasures will become blunt.
650. A man had no relatives before his birth. There will be no relatives after death also.
651. A soul seeks refuge in God only when it becomes is weak. Man calls God for help only when his condition is extremely miserable.
652. Don’t torment your heart by shouting “Hayi”, Hayi”; from now onwards start the practice of saying “Hari, Hari” instead.
653. If you start meditating on Hari from today, you can certainly remember and see Hari at the time of death. When the legs become cold
or weak, understand that you are already in the grip of death.
654. Call God desperately as done by the elephant in the story of Gajendramoksham
(Liberation of the king of elephants) in Sreemad Bhagavatam. Read this story daily. You will certainly see God at the time of death.
Nightmares and other ill-omens will not disturb you during your lifetime.
655. Read the story of Matsyavatara (God’s incarnation as Fish) daily. It is beneficial to read Rasapanchadhyayi (Five chapters in the
tenth Skandha of Bhagavatam, dealing with Rasakreeda) at midnight.
656. If you worship God constantly, God will rush to your side at the time of your death. Therefore, pray to God daily to come for your
rescue at the time of death.
657. Tulasi and Lotus are two things dearest to the Lord.
658. God’s devotees should be honoured and worshipped more than God Himself.
659. When you attribute the presence of God in a stone-idol, that idol actually acquires the attributes of God. When a man’s faith in that
idol reaches its summit, he attains God-realisation within no time. God-realisation is, therefore, assured for those who place full faith in
idols of God.
660. If good culture is rooted in us, our last days and next birth will become pure.
661. The joyful experience of seeing God generally occurs for the first time in a dream.
662. Holy men and those who have realised God approach you only with good intentions. Never disrespect them. Obey their advices
implicitly.
664. Spiritual Knowledge does not last long in the affluent; but it does so in the destitute.
665. Hunger and thirst are diseases of the body; try to suffer them as far as possible.
666. Insult is poison; but if you can take it with ease, you will become deathless. ‘Poison’ is another name for adversity. It gives distress. If
you have the Ganges of devotion flowing through your head, you can easily drink this poison. (Allusion is to the story of Lord Shiva, who
carries Ganga on His head, drinking poison at the time if churning the ocean of milk)
667. One who suffers sorrow for making others happy becomes Shiva. But one who gives sorrow to others for his happiness will wander
miserably in this world.
668. Do not think of any insult that you have suffered. Also do not remember anyone who hates you. This will prevent indigestion.
669. When poison (worldly miseries) becomes unbearable, chant God’s Names. God’s Names will convert poison into nectar.
670. When you become sixteen years of age, agitation starts in your mind. If the poison in the shape of innate tendencies appears, think of
mount Manthara, which churned the Ocean of Milk and fix your thoughts on it. If you continue to churn the ocean of Samsara in this
manner, nectar of devotion will definitely appear in your mind.
671. God will throw you down for a fire-test. At first He tests you by giving poison (sorrows). If you pass this test, you will be given
nectar (bliss).
673. If you do not get happiness in your life, it is because you are committing sins.
674. If you receive exceptional fame, know that your merits of past good actions have exhausted. Those who run after name and fame will
definitely not get nectar.
675. Man begins to worship God when his desire for wealth is destroyed.
676. Goddess Lakshmi will not leave those whose heart is pure and simple.
677. Those that are blessed by Lakshmi should have merciful eyes. In other words, they should as far as possible, mitigate the hardship of
others by giving them financial help.
678. Nectar of Bhakti will not flow in a house which is a stage for quarrelling at all times.
679. Beauty is merely your imagination. Anything that appears beautiful to you cannot appear beautiful to a dog. Therefore, beauty is
dependent on your eyes.
680. You must necessarily give up your desire for the enchantments of the world; desire beautiful things and desire for worldly objects.
When the desire for God increases, desire for worldly things will reduce.
681. If you look at this world with lust in your eyes, desires will grow. But if you look at it with God in your eyes, desires will soon
disappear.
682. Those who keep women in their thoughts while walking along the road are Rakshasas (demons). Those who look at another’s wife
with lustful eyes are really Rakshasas.
683. You should not show discrimination in serving food. If you do so, you will suffer serious stomach disorders.
684. If the merits of good actions performed in earlier births are with us, punishment for sins that we commit may not be experienced at
once.
685. Do not ever feel proud that you have controlled your senses. Desire for worldly pleasures may lie hidden in your mind. When
opportunity arises it may show up and pull you down.
686. Men who live in celibacy and conserve vital energy will be strong and healthy.
687. One who holds the umbrella of justice over his head cannot be hurt by anyone.
688. If husband and wife worship God jointly, God will be pleased very soon.
691. Do not look at anyone discriminatingly. Try to see everyone with godly eyes. If your vision is good, the out come will also be good.
Sreemad Bhagavatam gives you perfect eyes and perfect vision.
693. The form which comes to your thoughts frequently will remain fixed in your mind permanently.
694. Man succumbs to fear and grief because of his inability to experience God’s presence constantly.
695. Household is not a hindrance; it is conducive to devotion. But attachment to the household is a great hindrance to devotion.
696. You take food everyday; so also take the company of holy men daily.
697. Brahmins should worship God at all the three sandhyas daily.
698. Young men who observe celibacy should refrain from thinking and speaking about women and touching them. (Avoid contact of
women by thought, word and action)
699. Men who live in celibacy should not look at the face and hair of women, because these are the places where sensuality is
predominant.
700. Senses are powerful enough to mislead you. You must have heard stories where even the minds of great men were carried away by
their senses.
701. The face of one who stares at other’s wife viciously will blacken.
702. If you happen to bow your head involuntarily on seeing an unknown person, it is evident that godliness is more predominant in him.
703. Donate at least one-fifth of your income for charity, because all the money that comes to your possession may not be pure.
704. Mendicants are not coming to your house for begging. The purpose of their visit is to give you proper guidance. Along with that, they
take away a part of your sin in the form of Bhiksha that you offer.
705. Pure and righteous spiritual seers and chaste women are the supports of this world.
706. If a man fails to give the gift once promised, his place is in the hell.
707. If you have anxiety about your future, you may save one-fifth of your income.
708. Relatives and friends will serve you, only when you have enough wealth.
709. You can save one-fifth of your income for the old age. If you do so, you can avoid begging from your children.
710. Selfishness dominates in this world. So people are unable to attain Knowledge of the Supreme. Selfish people have no hesitation to
do any wicked deed. The results of their wickedness are suffered by others and in turn they also suffer the wickedness of others. Wicked
people always crave for fame and happiness for themselves.
711. Telling untruth is pardonable in four cases; 1) to solicit a marriage; 2) while talking to women; 3) when one’s life is in danger; and 4)
for the protection of cows and Brahmins.
712. When money is spent for a good cause, even if some obstructions might come in the way, the ultimate result will be peaceful. But if
money is misused, you will have no peace till your death.
713. God is the master of our body and mind. Keep this in mind and do your duties.
714. Wicked men who always say “mine, mine”, are punished by God. On the other hand, wise men who always say “thine, thine”, are
protected by God.
715. The donor of a gift should not feel proud of giving it. A gift becomes futile, if it is not given with humility.
716. By surrendering himself to God, man binds God in his heart. Surrender of one’s ego or pride is far better than surrender of the body.
717. Only the strong can traverse the path of God and follow God’s injunctions in life. And who is the strong? The strong is the one who
has defeated his inner foes like lust, anger, greed, delusion, hatred, and egotism.
718. God visits the house of righteous men and asks for three things from them; their body mind and wealth. These three should be
surrendered to God. By this total surrender they get admission to Rasaleela. The union of Jivatman (individual soul) with Paramatman
(cosmic soul) is Rasaleela. Real surrender is the total surrender of Jivatman to Paramatman .God takes up the role of a gate-keeper for
devotees like Mahabali who surrender themselves totally to Him.
719. By worshipping God with your body, Thamoguna (quality of ignorance) in you reduces. Worship of God with wealth will reduce
your Rajoguna (quality of restless activity). God will not be pleased with the surrender of your body and wealth, unless it is accompanied
by the surrender of mind. Unless your mind is involved in the worship, you will not derive satisfaction from that worship. Engaging the
body in the worship of God and the mind in worldly affairs at the same time, are totally incongruous activities. If you can shed a few
drops of tears of joy from your eyes at the time of worship, take it that God is showering His mercy on you.
721. If you install an image of God in your house, Goddess Lakshmi will come into your house uninvited. So better worship God, rather
than running after Lakshmi (wealth.)
722. When God’s blessings are showered on anyone, all his riches will at first be taken away, because it is wealth and riches that make a
man egotist. Wealth also disgraces God as well as the whole world.

Moola prakrthi is the primordial nature in which the three gunas are in equilibrium. They
start combining and first mahat or buddhi thathva evolves out of prakrthi. From mahat the
ahankra is evolved. This is three fold according to the three gunas and from satvik ahankara
the senseorgans, organs of creation and mind are evolved and from thamasik ahankara the
five thanmatras, the subtle elements in the form of sound, touch, colour, taste and smell are
evolved from which the gross elements space, air, fire, water and earth are evolved. The
rajasik ahankara acts only as a catalyst for the activity. Then the whole gross universe comes
into existence. Since mind and intellect, buddhi are also the products of the gunas, even the
feelings and thoughts belong to the insentient prakrthi.
Purusha is the individual self who is actionless and hence neither an evolvent nor an evolute.
Prakrthi starts creating by the mere presence of purusha who , due to the lack of knowledge of
the real nature of prakrthi, identifies himself with it and gets bound. When he acquires the
real knowledge about prakrthi and that he is unattached with it, he becomes free.
Prakrthi is not perceptible because it is unmanifest . it is not non-existent like the horn of the
hare. The reason for the non-perception of prkrthi is subtlety, because it is beyond sense
perception.
In sankhya the cause a s well as the effect , that is the prkrthi and its effects are real unlike in
advaita and Nyaya systems. The tenets of sankhya regarding cause and effect are,
1. What is non-existent cannot be brought into existence.
This is a refutation of Buddhism according to which everything comes out of nothing because
they do not believe in any eternal reality. Everything is momentary or only the projection of
the mind. Nothing can come out of nothing. A non-existent entity like the horn of the hare can
never come into existence by any means.
In advaita also the effect , the world is unreal and an illusion though they affirm a real and
eternal cause that is Brahman. Sankhya refutes this also for the reason given above.
The Nyaya school of philosophy the effect is asath, non-existent in the cause, which is sath
because for them the effect is newly produced and not the modification of the cause.Thisis
also refuted by sankhya saying that the effect could not be different from the cause in its
essential nature.
The sprout comes out of the seed when the seed ceases to exist. But the sprout has only the
parts of seed as its cause and not the nonexistence of the seed. In other words the seed itself
becomes the cause (pariNaama- modification)
The essential characteristics of the cause do remain the same in the effect. A blue flower
comes out of its seed and yellow flower comes out of its seed. The colours are not changed on
any account. The expressions ‘a pot exists,’ and ‘ a pot ceases to exist’ refer only to the two
states of the pot.
There is no example of any effect coming into being from a non-existent cause.
2.Every effect must have a cause .
There is a definite connection between the cause and the effect, because ,
3. All effects are not produced from all causes. If anything can come out of anything, one who
wishes to make a cloth can get hold of clay and one who wants pot can take the yarn. This
point leads to the next reason, namely,
4. A cause can produce only something which it has the power to produce. Hence a non-
existent cause and a non-existent effect are both dismissed.
5. Since every effect has a cause , it has the same qualities of the cause. Pot has got the
qualities of the clay and not cloth while the cloth has the same qualities of that of the yarn
with which it is made.
The unmanifest prkrthi is causeless as it is eternal according to sankhya like the purusha,
the individual soul, it is actionless in the causal state and the gunas start combining due to
the proximity of purusha. It is one and partless, being all pervading, does not depend on
anything else for its existence and hence not subsidiary to anything and it is not a sign from
which its cause could be inferred being causeless and unmanifest.
The present day life calls upon us to have an unusual degree of courage, awareness, growth, happiness, and
prosperity. But, it is not an easy joke. Loads of difficulties are increasing day by day in our life, in spite of all our
efforts. Life has series of problems, some of them are very difficult to solve. It may not be so easy to get a right
Spiritual Master for all to show the right path, either. Here comes Srimad Bhagavatham to help us to a great extent
amidst many other things, with the story of 24 Gurus from the open nature, whom we can keenly observe and learn
from them many helpful hints to solve many of our problems. The process of solving problems may perhaps be
augmented if we keep up some of the basic requirements such as our unconditional love towards God with the
ultimate aim of attaining Brahma Gignasa through Dharma Gignasa, and then selecting the righteous path of
Pravarthy Marga, through the proper Nivarthy Marga. Dharma Gignasa involves righteous living and Brahma
Gignasa enables us towards achieving Self-Realization. Nivarthy Margas are like taking wise decisions after
Sravanam, Keerthanam, Mananam, Nitidhyasam and Dhyanam etc., and Pravarthy Marga is in executing things in
the most systematic, righteous and perfect way, without prejudice to anyone.
Canto 11in Srimad Bhagavatham teaches us about whatever we want in our lives. One of the reasons for the
eleventh Canto to be known as the crown of Bhagavatam, is because it contains innumerable discourses and
Upakhyanas, with simple illustrations as to how we could live a fearless life. Swami Vallabacharya beautifully
expounds the uniqueness of this Canto since it talks about liberation to both the Lord and the common people or
jivas. The Lord became Srimad Bhagavatham to play in the hands of normal mortals like us, and in due course
liberate the jivas. This canto deals with Bhagavatha Dharma for a common man. It is Sage Shuka elaborating on
Bhagavata Dharma.
Amidst them comes the beautiful story of 24 Gurus. It is in Chapters 7, 8 and 9 in Canto11. (Nearly 109
Slokas). The scene is just before Swargarohana of Lord Krishna. Udhava’s all efforts to retain Lord Krishna here in
Bhooloka, during Kali Yuga, failed miserably. He was also in utter disappointment when he heard from Krishna
that he was not taking him to Vaikuntam, either. He appeared for one moment as ignorant of the fact that Krishna is
always there and that Bhagavan has just finished only His duties of one of His many Avatars. We know the truth,
aswell as Udhava, that there is nothing as wonderful and sweet as Krishna's name in this whole world. Udhava is a
typical example of a common man though he is Krishna’s cousin and a Sishya of Great Brhaspati. So many
instances are there in Srimad Bhagavatham, wherein he puts doubts regarding so many silly things to Krishna. I
think Vyasa Bhagavan intends him as a representative of us. Every time you can see Krishna patiently describing to
him the situation and clearing his doubt as if to a very close and intimate friend. If we closely watch, we can see
that every time he is asking Krishna for a short cut also, as some of us do to our elders. However, finally Krishna
advised Udhava to do ‘Sarvasangaparithyaga’ through ‘Sannyasa’. Spontaneously, as usual, he told Krishna, that
he was ignorant and that he was always indulged in thinking about his body, created by Krishna’s Yogamaya, and
all things related to the body such as his relations and his possessions. He added that his consciousness was merged
with his body. So, he asked Krishna to kindly teach him the easiest method by which he could attain the
Sarvasangaparithyaga through Sannyasa as He advised.
Bhagavan told him:
“Those who do Tatwa Vichara to find out truth, by self and deep deliberations, gradually and eventually lift
or raise his atma by his atma itself, from external sensory pleasures or mere worldly pleasures. Bhagavan exhorted
him to liberate his soul from worldly pleasures or mere sensual pleasures.’
Gita puts this more nicely, like:
“Udharedatmanaatmanam, natmanamava sadhayel,
Atmaiva hyatmano bandhu , ratmaiva ripuratmana”, (Gita 6-5)
Let one raise the self by the self, and not let the self go down, for the self is the friend of the self and the self is the
foe of the self.
Bhagavatham continues,
Guru of atma is atma itself, especially for man, he is his Guru, because by seeing, by observing and by
inference, he clears his doubts and attains prosperity gradually. Those bold and brave ones, specialized in Samkhya
and Yoga, recognize and distinguish, the omnipotent atma or soul, distinctly. Somany bodies are created here, with
one to many legs and without legs, of which I like best, the body of man. Here Bhagavan makes the reference of
the conversation, regarding 24 Gurus, between the Maha Tejaswi Dattathreya, Paramgnani Avadhootha , a wise,
handsome and brilliant young Brahmin, wandering fearlessly, throughout the length and breadth of the world and
the Dharma Tatwa Gnani King Yadu, son of Yayati, the forerunner of Krishna.
When asked where did he get the extra ordinary intelligence and power , though he is wandering like a mad boy
and doing nothing, the Brahmin said to Yadu, that he had many Gurus accepted by his own intelligence and they
made him such a ‘jeevanmuktha’. He began to narrate the details of those Gurus and the lessons he learned from
each of them.
The details of the 24 Gurus (Spiritual Masters) and the lessons learned from them as told by the Paramgnani
Brahmin to King Yadu can be summarized as follows:
The Earth: (We feel smell because of the Earth; there is no smell, if there is no Earth)
From the earth I learned a sober person should never be distracted from progress on his own path even if he
is harassed by other living beings, because they are acting helplessly under the control of God. He should consider
it as his fate. He should be as steady as the earth. The earth teaches us ‘sahana shakthi’, (power of endurance). So
the earth is called ‘sarvam saha:’ We should pardon others as Earth pardons. This is why it is called Bhoomimata,
the mother earth. We have to learn ultimate ‘Kshama’ (patience) from Bhoomi. Like the mountain and the tree, he
should dedicate himself to the service of others. We learn lessons by observing the way material nature, with its
living and non-living components, functions.
2.The Air: ( We feel the sense of touch or ‘’sparsha’, because of the Air )
‘Pranavayu’ sustains our gnana, mind and words and so we must eat only that much required to sustain our
pranavayu. A yogi or a transcendentalist may be surrounded by innumerable material objects possessing good and
bad qualities. But like the wind he should never be entangled by them. When the wind carries different aromas, it
never mixes with them. It is functioning only as a career and it is independent.
3.The Sky :(We hear because of the sky; if there is no sky, we will never hear any sound)
Though the sky extends everywhere and everything rests within it, it does not mix with anything. The soul
and Supersoul have the same quality. The sky is never implicated or affected by the blowing action of the wind. In
the same way the living entity or the Brahman in a Muni, is wide spread, indivisible, is never affected like the sky,
though it may enter a body of material elements. Like the sky is not affected by clouds and wind, the atma or the
soul, is not affected by the body, made of the ‘Panchabhoothas’ or the five elements like Prithuvi, Ap (water), Tejas,
4.The Water: (We feel taste or Rasam, because of water) It is a fact that one cannot live without Air and Water. 75%
of the Earth is covered by water. Living being contains 70% of water. Since we cannot live without water, water is
also known by the name ‘Jeevanm’.
The saintly person is like water , the most powerful detergent or cleaning liquid in the world, because he is
free from all contamination, gentle by nature and when speaking creates a beautiful vibration like the flowing of
water. By seeing, touching or hearing such a saintly person, the living entity is cleansed as if coming in contact
with pure Ganga water
5.The Fire: (It is said that we feel the shape or form of things because of the presence of Fire.)
Even if a saintly person eats contaminated food by chance he is not affected, like the fire that burns up
contaminated substances that are offered to it. Like fire, he is sometimes concealed and sometimes revealed. As the
spiritual master, he burns up the past and future reactions of his disciples. The Supreme Soul is like fire in that He
enters different bodies as fire manifests differently in various pieces of wood. Like the flickering fire, the waves of
time flow constantly and imperceptibly bring with them birth, growth and death. But just as nobody can follow the
changing pattern of a flame, no one can see the changes wrought by time upon them.
The Atma, with the help of maya created by itself, enters into different forms like
devas and animals, and as if fire enters into different types of wood, it appears to simulate their ‘dharmas.’
6. The Moon:
Though the Moon waxes and wanes, it is not affected by this “change.” Similarly the living entity or atma,
is not affected by the invincible changes of the body brought to it from the time of birth to the time of death.
7.The Sun:
A saintly person can accept a material thing with his senses and at the appropriate time he gives that thing to the
proper person. So also the Sun evaporates water and returns it to earth as rain. Sun and saint are never entangled by
this. A yogi accepting the sense objects renounces them at the right time. The sun is reflected in many objects but is
never divided. Also the soul is reflected into various bodies but is always one and the same.
8.The Pigeon:
A certain pigeon once in the forest built its nest in a tree. He dwelt there for some years with a female
companion and their children. As attached partners in their household they were with their hearts full of affection
tied together. One day seeing his wife and children captured, by a hunter and thinking that without them life was
not worth living, out of excessive attachment, the ‘madappura’ chose to be captured by the hunter. This teaches us
that one should never lose oneself in excessive affection or deep and close association with anyone, because one
thus indulging will have to suffer great distress. Man is not aware of the rarest human birth, by which one can
liberate easily.
9.The Python:
He does not make arrangements for food, and he will not go in search of food either, but waits for food to come
to him. It eats the food, without even looking for the quantity, quality or taste. A sadhaka should eat what he gets,
sumptuously like this. He must be ready to starve for many days if such a situation comes, considering it as his
‘prarabdha karma phala’. People say that once the python takes its food, it can remain without food for six months.
This exemplifies peacefulness and patience
11 . The Moth:
A silly man is captivated by a woman’s charm, gold, jewels etc., just like a moth is captivated by a flame
and burns in it. It ends its life in the flame. A saintly person should realize that a woman is a ‘Deva maya’.
17. Pingala:
Once there was a prostitute lady in the Kingdom of Videha. She gave up her plans for earning money the
bad way, out of frustration. Feeling satisfaction from her abandonment of material desires, she could remember
Krishna and became peaceful forever.

Health
Chandra Menon
Our health is in our hands. God designed our body and has armed with arms and shoulders to protect
our body. At the end of the arm palm and fingers are provided to feel the touch and affection. A gentle
touch shows the affection while a hard one is felt as a blow. During the cold season rubbing the palms
together generates heat that makes the whole body warm and protect from the cold. The nails at the end
are protecting the fingers and also can be used as a weapon. The nails (toe nails included) are the
window to our general health. This is what website of webmd says “Our nails often take a back seat to
our physical health, but doctors say bad looking nails may be a sign of real medical problems”.
By softly rubbing with our palm and fingers ailments such as itching, scratching etc. can be coolly
handled without any application of ointment. Make sure to avoid contact with the nails. Taking bath itself
is an exercise to keep the body clean. While taking bath slight massages on the skull energizes and
vibrate the nerves and keep the head cool. A massage to the ankle, feet and toes make our legs lively
and lovely.
Similar to our arms a nation needs “army” for protection of its own subjects and not for attacking
neighboring country or countries. An army can be called to help citizen in abnormal conditions of natural
calamity for which they are best trained. At the same time if the army is strong no outsiders will consider
of attacking since they know the outcome.
During my younger school days, we used to stand in line to perform “drill” a sort of body exercises. Each
one stands away at arms length and stretches our arms so that our fingers are inches away from the
person standing next. The drill master then did not say the exact reason for this exercise. Now having
practiced the same I feel healthy too. While stretching my arms I use slight pressure as if the arms are
pulled away from my body, As I raise my arms to the shoulder level, I slowly breath-in and hold my
breath for 5 seconds and slowly breath-out as I bring down the arms. Alternatively, one can raise the
arms and touch both the palms above the head and slowly breathing out. This can be repeated two or
three times.
Another exercise that I use early morning is to make a “lotus flower” with the palm and the fingers. First
pose as “namastey” with the palms together. Slowly breath-in while making the palm similar to the lotus
bud. Then open up the fingers to make it like a lotus flower while keeping the base of the palm together
and the thumps and little fingers together. I keep breathing-in during this process. Hold breath for 3-4
seconds while stretching the fingers to the maximum and also feeling the pressure on the wrist,
elbow and even on the shoulders. This can be repeated two or three times before getting up from the
bed. Those who perform “soorya namaskar” should also feel the pressure on the shoulder, and elbows
while raising their arms. Thus with our arms and shoulders we can perform exercises to make our body
healthy.
Health also demands proper healthy food in moderation.
Bhagavath Geetha Chapter 6 Sloka 17 “yukthaahara…….bhavathi du:khahaa” clearly says eat proper
food, do proper exercises, enough sleep. Do not over indulge any that will keep diseases away.
yuktAhAra vihArasya yukta ceshTasya karmasu |
yukta svapna avabodhasya yogo bhavati duhkhahA ||
Meaning:
The yoga becomes destroyer of sorrows for him who is moderate in eating and
in relaxation and in all his actions and in sleep and waking (from Sarojaji’s e-book)
The type of food that we eat is responsible for making our body healthy. Avoid junk food and maintain
nutritional and balanced diet. The body is considered as “kshethram” and must be kept clean inside and
outside all the time. Always sit straight (keep the back straight) especially while eating our food. Mind
you, we are not eating food but offering “nivedyam” to the God within. And also do consider what ever
we are offering is HIS prasadam. A happy and friendly atmosphere is absolutely necessary to enjoy the
meal. Avoid unnecessary talk or arguments while eating. Avoid unhealthy Diet Cola (any Cola for that
matter) and drink only warm water.
Our health is in our hands and not in the hands of Doctors’ or our Governments’, and make the best use

tAtparyaH:
Where there are the six attributes of Diligence, Bravery, Courage, Wisdom,
drinking water. These she spread before herself for the various items of the menu. When the
meal was over, she left the place, leaving the precious golden articles to be taken by the
host. She had a new set for each day, she said.
The news spread. The villages where Narayana was holding his delightful discourses also
heard the wonderful happenings of the Yogini's gifts. The Brahmins who were staunch
admirers of the far-famed scholar also rushed to invite the Yogini to their homes for lunch!
The Yogini told them that they ought to drive the Pundit out before she could enter their
settlement. She would not set foot there so long as the person continued to stay there! She
was adamant on that point. Their greed for gold was so strong that they forced the Pundit,
whom they had adored so long and with so much pomp, to go out of their village.
Thereafter, the Yogini entered the Brahmin settlement, gave discourses, partook of feasts
arranged in her honour and presented the golden plates and cups to each of her hosts. Thus,
the Yogini managed to get the Pundit driven out of every place where he sought recognition
and attention. Instead, she secured the worship of people everywhere. Unable to bear the
universal insult, the Pundit cast off the role and Narayana disappeared from the earth. The
Yogini came to know of this. She too gave up the cast she had assumed and, resuming her
real form, She joined Lord Narayana. While talking among themselves, she told the Lord,
"Now, tell me! What did you discover? Who between us is honoured and worshipped more
on earth?" Narayana smiled at her question. He replied, "Yes, What you said is true."
