Great Scientists and Their Inventions

Scientific discoveries influence every aspect of our lives.


Without Alexander Graham Bell, who created the telephone,
we wouldn’t have close communication through cell phones.
Henry Ford’s assembly line cars have led to one of the
biggest industries in the world. Steven Job built the first
Apple computers in his garage with Bill Gates. Copernicus
opened up the heavens so that we could study the stars and planets of distant
solar systems. Your assignment is to research a great scientist, complete the
graphic organizer, and write a biographical essay.

• Open the HMS web site and at the 6th Grade Technology Lessons page
open the Excel template named “Great Scientists Template.”
• Click View/Header and Footer. Enter your full name and hit the tab key.
Enter your teacher’s name-period number and hit the tab key. Click on
the date shortcut key and hit close.
• Save this file to your student network folder as “Great Scientists.”
• Open the file from your student network folder and minimize.
• Use the Internet resources below to fill out the “Great
Scientists” graphic organizer. Remember that the
more information you have on your scientist the
easier it will be to write your biographical essay
later.

How to Create Your Biographical Essay


• Open Microsoft Word
• Save the document as “greatscientist” in your student network folder.
• Select View/Header and Footer. Enter your full name and hit the tab key.
Enter your teacher’s name-period number and hit the tab key. Click on
the date shortcut key and hit close.
• Change the font to Arial and the font size to 12.
• Click Format/Paragraph and change the Line Spacing from Single to
Double.
• Click on the center icon to place your title (which should be your scientist’s
name at the very least) in the middle of the document page.
• Click on the Bold icon to make your title stand out on the page. Deselect
the Bold icon and press Enter.
• Click on the Left Align icon and hit the tab key to begin typing your
biographical essay.
• Remember to save often!
• You biographical essay should include:

Introductory Paragraph with at least 3 sentences. Introduce your


scientist by giving information about the time period in which
he/she lived and the work he/she was best known for.
3 Body Paragraphs with at least 4 sentences each providing
specific details about the scientist’s life and contributions to
science.
Closing Paragraph with at least 3 sentences that explain the
scientist’s effects on modern science.

• www.unitedstreaming.com Use United Streaming to find an image to add


to your biographical essay. Click on the down arrow at Learning Tools
and select “Image Library.” Type in your scientist’s name in the Keyword
search. Copy and paste the image to your Word document and be sure to
include the citation provided by United Streaming.

• Print only after your teacher has given you permission.
