How to effectively treat the skin?

When treating the skin, there should be a set order in which the Primary skin types are treated, this is to ensure the skin responds well to treatment and homecare products. The order is as follows SENSITIVE/HYPERSENSITIVE/TRAUMATISED SKIN
If this skin type is left untreated you are limited to product usage. Pre-mature ageing, dehydration and rosacea can progress if sensitivity is not treated.

DRY/DEHYDRATED SKIN
A dry/dehydrated skin does not absorb product easily, therefore increasing the skins absorbency rate, will allow better product penetration. A dry skin also ages the quickest, therefore needs anti-ageing ingredients too.

OILY SKIN
An oily skin ages the slowest, however, the oil produced within the skin can dilute the actives within products, by balancing and controlling this, we can ensure maximum actives being delivered.

NORMAL/COMBINATION SKIN
The ideal skin type, however this needs to be maintained due to the constant daily attack our skin. Our products for this skin type will balance oilier areas and hydrate drier/dehydrated areas. In addition to Primary skin types, Secondary skin concerns can also be treated, examples of secondary skin concerns include: Environmental Damage Dull Skin Uneven Texture/Tone Congested Skin/Breakouts Fine Lines/Expression Lines Irritated/Stressed Skins Dehydration Lines Taughtness Natural/Genetic/Photo-ageing Secondary skin concerns can be treated in order of client preference; it is just the Primary skin types that we recommend you treat in order.

Monu has been formulated to work in synergy together, so products can be used across the line to tailor a skin care routine specifically for your clients. For example, if a client suffers with a sensitive skin, with oily tendencies, you can recommend products from both the sensitive and oily range to deal with this and deliver the results your clients have been longing for.

NATURAL SCIENCE FOR YOUR SKIN

Consultations
Before any face or body treatment is performed, it is vital that a thorough consultation is carried out to enable you to assess your clients skin type and current concerns, therefore ensuring you deliver POSITIVE RESULTS. Following the Monu consultation card, will be an effective aid to ensuring all the relevant questions are covered.
Objectives
To get a full picture of your clients Medical history Current skin routine Lifestyle Skin allergies Medication Skin complaints Client Concerns If you do not correctly identify your clients concerns, then how can you effectively treat his or her skin? To get the best from your client, asking open ended questions is key as this ensures they answer you with more detail, so for example Tell me about your skin or What do you currently use on your skin? Product Knowledge Know your products and treatments! You are the fountain of knowledge, your clients come to you with skin problems and concerns and are looking to you, to educate and recommend. During the consultation, certain things may crop up such as allergies; as the professional you need to know which products can be safely used on the skin or how you can adapt a treatment for it to be safe.

The Importance of Homecare

Home care should ALWAYS be recommended for your clients to take with them, this enables to treatment to continue at home. Home care will achieve 75% of your clients overall results! It is of course very important that the skin is regularly monitored by having professional treatments. Home care can be recommended during the consultation stage of the treatment and/or at the end of the treatment.

In addition to the above, using the product decision tree, you can get an idea of which products would be best suited to individual clients.

NATURAL SCIENCE FOR YOUR SKIN

Recommend Treatment Courses

As a general rule you would like to see your client at least once a month to maintain and monitor the skin and results. However, for specific concerns, or for special occasions, a course of treatments would always be highly recommended and should be set out in the following way
One treatment a week for 6 consecutive weeks, followed by One treatment in 3 weeks time, followed by One treatment in 4 weeks time, then assess overall result To maintain results, your client should continue to see you once a month.

It is worth knowing that courses can be carried out as many times throughout the year as you feel necessary. If you are working with pigmentation, for example, then this can be something that can take perhaps 2 full courses of treatment, before the desired results are achieved. For the best results, clients need to commit to a combination of homecare and professional treatments, if they do this, then they will see quicker results within the skin. Why?....Because you have re-educated the skin! Its always a great idea to take a photo of your clients skin before and after a course of treatments, so as you can show them the changes and improvements within the skin. Do not forget to mention the following information to your clients

75% of your overall results that you are looking to achieve comes from the homecare you use, the remaining 25% of your results comes from regular professional facials.

Treatment Protocol
Certain medications or treatments your clients are currently undergoing may mean that you have to alter a treatment. Certain medications may even prevent you from carrying out treatments. Below is a guide of common complaints that your client may have and what you can do to amend the treatment or what you can advise
My client is taking Accutane Accutane is a medication that isnt frequently given out; however, it is given to treat grade 4 acne. Accutane can dramatically thin the skin and cause a dry, irritated, itchy sensation. Because of this, you would need to wait at least 6 months after the client stops taking the Accutane, before you can treat. It is highly recommended to treat the skin with products for sensitive skin to begin with, until its strength and tolerance is regained. High/Low blood pressure or heart conditions, doesn't mean you cant treat, as long as the condition is controlled then you should be able to treat. It is advised that they are not led flat, so raising the knees and head slightly will also help. If they are having a body treatment, do not have the heated couch on too high, placing a cool compress on the forehead can also help. A treatment can be carried out after the first trimester, essential oils, acids and detox treatments should all be avoided. If client is suffering with preeclampsia then we would recommend not to treat. If the varicose vein is protruding then this needs to be avoided during any body treatments. During a wrap, ensure you do not wrap too tightly. During facials, check they are comfortable with the type of mask you have recommended, steam or hot towel compresses may have to be adapted or removed to ensure client comfort. Ideally medical consent should be obtained. Chemotherapy patients may be more prone to bruising and bleeding. Manual lymphatic drainage should be avoided.

My client suffers with High/ Low blood pressure or has a Heart Condition.

My client is Pregnant

My client has Varicose Veins

My client is Claustrophobic

My client has cancer

NATURAL SCIENCE FOR YOUR SKIN

My client has had recent surgery

Depending on where the surgery was, will determine whether you can treat or not. If a general anaesthetic was given then the skin can be more sensitive, dry or prone to irritation so always treat with caution and use the sensitive line. You can get different levels of microdermabrasion, as a general rule allow 3 weeks before starting professional Monu treatments. Clients should wait 3-5 days before having any Monu professional treatments on the area. It is recommended that you wait a week before carrying out any professional Monu treatments on the client. If the laser/IPL is being carried out to reduce pigmentation, then you may need to wait longer until the skin has healed. Some of these procedures can be very invasive so always wait until the skin has completely healed this could take 6-8 weeks in some cases. It would be advised to build the tolerance in the skin after such treatment; therefore the sensitive line would come highly recommended. It is fine to treat; you just need to know how the skin has changed since the use of these products. If they are prescription based products, then it would be advised to wait until the course has finished before using Monu skincare on the skin. A diabetic client can sometimes lose skin sensation, therefore any treatment including heat and electrical equipment should be avoided. Most commonly, skin sensation is lost in the feet; therefore cuticle nipping should be avoided.

My client recently had Microdermabrasion

My client has had waxing/electrolysis My client has had laser/IPL treatments

My client has had medical resurfacing procedures

My client current uses products containing retinol or AHAs

My client is diabetic

For best results, the treatment should be given once a week for six weeks and then once a month for maintenance. Procedure:
First cut two small triangles from the corners of the mask. Then place the folded mask lengthways against the face and mark the positions of the nostrils (and mouth, if required). Take the mask away from the face and cut small slits where you have marked. Remove eye make-up and lipstick. Wipe away any residue with Eye Lotion and blot. Cleanse the face, neck and decollete with Cleanser. Tone with Toner and blot. Exfoliate with Peeling Cream. Apply Facial Wash and gently massage in. Rinse off. Tone with Toner and blot. Skin Activator Moisture Rich Collagen Cream

Remove comedones, if indicated. Apply entire contents of one Ampoule for dry skin to face, neck and upper chest and gently tap into the skin until absorbed. Place the two small triangles cut from the corners of the mask under the eyes and dampen with the warm compress water, using a press and release action as taught on Facial Day Level 2. Apply the Active Collagen Mask to the face using a press and release action, with warm compress water and using a plastic spatula, try to work out any air bubbles. The active substances in the biomatrix are now released and mobilised. Apply eye pads to help adhesion to the eyelids.

Allow a relaxation period of 2030 minutes to allow the active substances in the mask to take effect. Remoisten the mask with Rosewood Reviving Mistt, if necessary. Whilst mask is on, a shoulder or scalp massage may be offered. Carefully peel off the mask in one piece by rolling it up from the neck. IMPORTANT do not rinse the skin or use toner.

Complete the treatment by massaging one pump of Skin Activator in to the face and neck until absorbed. Apply suitable eye product, lip balm and Moisture Rich Collagen
Cream to finish.

MONU Spa Welcome Ritual

To deliver that extra special spa like experience, we have developed a client welcome ritual that should be performed at the beginning of every body treatment. There are two different welcome rituals dependant on whether your client is face up or face down when the treatment starts. Both Welcome Rituals only take 2-3 minutes to perform; however, it will induce client relaxation, help them to feel at ease before the treatment begins and allows your client to get familiar with your touch. Procedure: (If client if facing up) Start at the soles of the feet, using warm mitts (with lavender or lime*) wipe over the feet. Rock at the feet x3, remove the mitts and cover the feet to retain heat. Continue the rocking motion all the way up the legs. When you reach the hips, move onto pressures up either side of the arms until you reach the shoulders. Keeping contact with your client, slide your hands so you are positioned to perform 3 neck stretches, gently sliding around the shoulders and up the neck each time. From here, work back down the body as you did when you initially worked up, finishing at the feet, applying pressures across the feet and down the feet (in a grid like way) ensuring you cover all of the pressure points of the body. From here, you can proceed with your treatment. Procedure: (If client if facing down) Start at the soles of the feet, using warm mitts (with lavender or lime*) wipe over the feet. Rock at the feet x3 then remove the mitts. Cover the feet and continue the side to side rocking up the legs, continue to rock up to the hips. When you reach the lower back, place one hand on top of the other and then asking your client to take 3 deep breaths in and out, apply a nice deep pressure to the lower lumbar as they exhale. Keeping one hand at the base of the spine, slide the other up to the top of the spine and gently rock to release tension. Using the flats of the hands draw them into the centre of the clients back and stretch them diagonally over the back so the flats of the hands are at the scapular and the opposite hip, giving your clients back a nice stretch, repeat this the other way. Repeat this sequence once again. Using gentle sweeping motions, sweep down the clients body, finishing at the feet, applying pressures across the feet and down the feet (in a grid like way) ensuring you cover all of the pressure points of the body. From here, you can proceed with your treatment.

Duration: 2-3 mins.

* if the client is looking for pure relaxation, then opt to apply 2-3 drops of the lavender essential oil on the mitts, if however the client is looking for a more uplifting treatment then the lime essential oil would be a better option to go for.

Couch Set Up:

This Deep Cleansing Back Treatment can be performed once a week for those suffering with breakouts and congestion on the back area (ideally a course of 6 would be recommended one a week for 6 weeks). However it is a treatment to suit everyone so can also be recommended for those who simply want to treat the back area and this can be maintained by having a treatment once a month.

As your client will be led face down, the head hole needs to be removed from the couch to enable your client to be led comfortably. It is recommended that a bolster is placed under the ankles of your client to take pressure of the lower back and then the client will be covered with towels to keep warm. Ideally the couch the client is led on will be heated to induce relaxation further. continued overleaf

MONU Spa Deep Cleansing Back Blitz

Procedure: Begin with the Monu Spa Welcome Ritual. Body brush the back of the clients back working towards the lymph nodes under the arms (Axillary lymph nodes). Using the Clarifying Cleanser, use 2-3 pumps and massage over the back to remove any dirt or debris from the back area and remove with hot mitts. Follow with the Clarifying Toner to remover any product residue and to prime the skin for the next step. Using the Body Buffer apply to the entire back and gently massage, you may find by adding a small amount of warm water this will make the product easier to massage over the back. Ensure you work the backs of the arms at this point too this also helps to deal with the small bumps often noticed on the backs of the arms (Keratosis Pilaris) once this has been massaged into the entire back and upper arms this can then be removed with hot mitts, dry the back with a towel and buff the skins surface to ensure all exfoliation pieces have been removed from the skin surface. Hot Oil Compress is then applied to the back (Tea Tree oil scents the water); this will then allow an extractions to take place to the back area prior to the deep cleansing mask being applied. Using a brush or your hands, apply the Cleansing Mask to the back, cover with a plastic sheet, then place the remaining two heated compresses directly onto the plastic to open pores further and enable deeper absorption of product, lay another plastic sheet over the hot compresses and then, place a large towel over the top. The mask will stay in place for 15 minutes, during this time, 10 minutes can be spent on a foot and leg massage (5 minutes on each) using the Foot and Leg Balsam, once finished, apply a small amount of the Energy Rub to the soles of the feet, then cover with a towel. Proceed onto the scalp where the remaining 5 minutes will be spent on massaging the scalp (follow the procedure for scalp massage when client is led face down) Remove the layers from the back and remove the mask using hot mitts. Tone over the back using the Clarifying Toner. Using the choice of one of four massage mediums dependant on your clients needs choose from Warming Ginger Massage and Body Oil For tension and knotted backs, this warming oil will relax tired, tense muscles. Calming Vanilla Massage and Body Oil For a more sensitive skins or skins that are suffering with congestion and breakouts. Stimulating Kyoto Massage and Body Oil For stimulating a sluggish circulation to invigorate and uplift the mind. Relaxing Bali Massage and Body Oil To ultimately relax the muscles as well as the mind, body and soul. Remove the massage oils form the skins surface by using hot mitts to remove surface residue, then spritz Rosewood Reviving Mist over the back to refresh. Finish the treatment by applying Energy Rub onto tension areas and Blemish Treatment to any breakouts (ideally use a cotton bud when applying the Blemish Treatment this should be applied directly to the effected area only).

hole should be replaced and the bolster should be positioned under the clients knees, once again for comfort and to reduce pressure on the lower back. Your client may appreciate the head of the couch to be lifted slightly so as they are not led completely flat. As the professional therapist, you can select one of two different blends dependant on clients concerns, choose from Warming Ginger Massage Oil with Papaya Salts Unwinding, relaxing and delivers a warming comforting treatment ideal for those who want pure relaxation or who struggle with very tight muscles or suffer with areas of tension. Calming Vanilla Massage Oil with Coffee Arabica Salts Uplifting, increases sluggish circulation, good for those concerned with cellulite and water retention and who are looking to detox. Which ever blend is selected; warm the oil either in a hot towel cabbie or using a bottle warmer before the treatment begins. Arrange the selected salts onto a flat plate which will enable easy application during the treatment.

This treatment can be performed once a week however can be recommended as a course of treatment for very dry, scaly skin. A treatment once a month to maintain the result of the treatment should be recommended.
Couch set up:

Place towels on couch in your usual way, then place one large bath sheet over the top to protect the towels underneath from the salt crystals during the treatment. One large towel to cover client and one small bust towel for when client is led face up. When your client is led face down, the head hole should be removed for comfort and a bolster should be placed under the clients ankles to take pressure from the lower back. MONU Spa Hot Oil and Salt Scrub Polish

Procedure Start with client led on the couch face down. Begin with the Monu Spa Welcome Ritual then Body Brush the back of the clients body (Hawaiian Wave). Turn client over and Body Brush the front of the body (again using the Hawaiian Wave method). Apply warmed oil onto one leg, getting the client to bend the knee; this will enable easier application to the entire leg. Once the leg has a thin coating of warm oil, ensure you have oil on your hands, and press your palms into the salts, once you have picked up the salts using an effleurage action, massage up and down the legs with the salts, if more is needed then repeat the process of picking up the salts and massage into the skin. After ensuring that the entire limb has been exfoliated, using a hot towel or hot mitts, remove the residue from the skins surface and buff lightly over the limb to ensure that most of the salt has been removed. While the clients leg is bent roll the towel that the client is led on, from under the leg into the centre of the couch so that when the client rests the leg back on the couch, its on a clean fresh towel with no salt residue. Repeat this process on the other leg. Apply warm oil to the stomach and work the salts in the same way ensuring you are working in the direction of the digestion tract. (Always check your clients are happy for you to work on the stomach area during the consultation stage before the treatment begins.) Remove with hot mitts then cover to keep warm. Apply warm oil to the arm and in the same way, pick up the salts and massage them into the arm (you may find it easier to rest your clients hand on your shoulder, leaving both of your hands free to work). Remove once again with hot mitts. Repeat on the other arm. Apply the warm oil to the dcollet area (optional - bust area can be treated too, client dependant, find out during the consultation stage. If they are happy to have the bust area treated, avoid working over the nipple area) you may need less salt on this more delicate area. Remove with hot mitts. Help the client to sit up on the couch, apply warm oil to the back, then pick up salts to massage into the back, work the area for a little while ensuring you cover the backs of the arms with the salt too, then remove with hot mitts. Buff the back with a dry towel to remove any salt crystals and before laying your client back down, roll the towel towards the buttocks. Once the client is led back down, simply ask them to lift their bottom to easily remove the towel from under them. Using a spare pair of mitts, go back over the body and remove any last few crystals that you may have missed. Finish the treatment with the application of moisturiser. For those who chose the Ginger and Papaya scrub, the choice of the Enriched Body Cream can be massaged into the skin in the same order of application as the salts and oil were applied. For a dryer skin the Enriched Body Cream is a better option as it has a thicker consistency. For those who opted for the Vanilla and Coffee scrub the application of the Super Sculpt would be the best option to continue to work with the cellulite, water retention and sluggish circulation.

NATURAL SCIENCE FOR YOUR SKIN

Warm Waxing
There are two warm waxes in the MONU range suitable for clients who require silky smooth hair removal. These waxes are Cairfree, Essential Cream Wax
Precautions: Clients should be warned to avoid heat treatments such as saunas, hot baths or sunbeds for 24 hours after waxing. Very long underarm and bikini line hairs should be trimmed first. In-growing hairs should be lifted out with tweezers. Due to poor circulation and lower body temperatures in very cold weather, wax only small areas at a time. If wax does stick on cold areas of the client, apply another thin coat of warm wax and use a clean cloth to remove. When waxing leave a small amount of cloth free to hold on to. Contra-indications: Do not apply warm wax to moles, spots, warts, sunburn, cold sores, rashes, broken skin, eyelids, inside of nose and ears, aureole or skin infections. Clients who suffer from varicose veins, excessive fluid retention or phlebitis should not be treated. Clients who have diabetes should have their doctors permission in writing.

Procedure: Prepare Cairfree by warming in the thermostatically controlled wax heater. Test on inside of your wrist before application. Apply Cairfree in a thin coat in the direction of the hair growth. Spread using the edge of a spatula. Apply approximately 2/3 of a cloth strip, leaving some cloth to grip, pressing downwards firmly, following the direction of the hair growth. Remove by stripping off against hair growth as quickly as possible. Keep the hand fairly close to the skin when doing this. Always stretch the skin taut with free hand before pulling off the strip. Immediately press treated area with free hand to reduce any mild discomfort.

Repeat the process using the same strip until it will not pick up any more of the product. Use another new strip if required. On sensitive areas, particularly the upper lip, apply tension to the skin. This makes the treatment less uncomfortable. Treat knees bent to provide an easier working area. To treat the bikini line, position the clients leg in a figure 4 position. Treat each side of the groin muscle first then relax the leg and treat the muscle. Finish by applying After Cairfree Oil to give a soft, smooth feel to the skin. Wipe away excess oil with a tissue.
