Summary
V. V. Emelianov. Akkadian Loanwords in Sumerian (the Old Babylonian
period).
The article deals with the problem of Akkadian loanwords in Sumerian.
The list of 110 borrowings from the times of the Isin dynasty to Hammurabi
(XX-XVIII) is given according to main groups of the texts of the post-
Sumerian time. All words are quoted in chronological order with references
to main databases (ETCSL, ePSD, CDLI).
Among the loanwords there is a large number of plant names
(particularly conifers), fauna, minerals, weapons and everyday objects.
Relatively small number of social or professional terms, or words from
religious or cultural life has been found. However, it is quite remarkable
that Late Sumerian borrowed from Akkadian language some abstract nouns
depicting psychological conditions associated with fatigue, exhaustion,
weakness, suffering and depression. Such terms are not available in the
Sumerian language. The second interesting feature of the Late Sumerian is
borrowing of a large number of verbs (much larger than in previous
periods).
The analysis and conclusions on the problem of Akkadian loanwords
published by the Russian Sumerologists are also discussed.
In the final part the author summarizes the preliminary results of the
whole study.
