Illustrawberry *
* *
*
My first op-
portunity to work with the pen
* *
tool in the Adobe Illustrator program
*
was the creation of this strawberry. This as-
signment was preparation for a more highly *
involved assignment to follow. I chose the straw- *
berry because I wanted to draw many shapes
inorder to gain control over the pen tool.
*
* *
Once I un-
derstood how the handles *
assist in manipulating the line
drawn and learned some keyboard *
short cuts which speed up drawing
time, I fell in love! I find it fun to ren-
*
der images in the Illustrator program,
and I feel the pen tool is a huge as-
*
set to the creation of my designs.

The Ducky
was my next illustrator chal-
* *
lenge. From the original pixel based
image I have created this vector image *
of a rubber ducky. We were also instruct-
ed to design a background of our choice. I *
decided a sink with bubbles best suited my
ducky. I used repitition of circles and the
*
same five colors to create the bubbles. I also
experimented with gradients on the sink.

Illumetrologo *

*
For the
Metro logo the challenge was
* *
to design a logo for a business that
incorporated a graphic image as well *
as typography that was suited to the
business. I chose a type face that was not *
*
etRo
only stylish but crisp enough to be read-
able as well as recognizable in a company
logo. I also tied the typography to the im-
age by creating the ‘M’ with the hair.

Feel i n g
like I could use an even big-
* *
ger challenge, I decided to recreate
one of my favorite sketches in Illustra- *
tor. While the process was time consum- *
ing, I had a lot of fun and the finished
product is quite rewarding! I did use a
*
little gradient effect, but mostly it is just *
solid shapes that create this image.

My typog- * *
raphy self portrait was an in-
teresting exploration into letterforms
*
and how they are shaped and how those
shapes can work together to create imagery.
*
After completeing this self portrait I have a *
new appreciation for letterforms and their
many uses in art and graphic design.

The chal-
lenge with the woman with
* *
the orchid was to return this image
to normal tones, as well as clean up *
the numerous imperfections through-
out the original file. Using adjustment *
layers and healing tools in Photoshop,
I turned the image below into the image *
at right. It was quite a labor intensive,
but the finished product is a marked im-
provement from the original file.

The melonhead was an exer-
cise to teach the various selection
*
tools in Photoshop. We experimented
with the marquee tool, lasso and mag-
*
netic lasso tools to remove all the fruit *
and vegetable shapes below and arrange
them to create the melon head.

This collage was an in class ex-

ercise designed to teach us about pho-
toshop blend modes. We took six separate *
images and blended them together to create *
one image. This ability was essential for our
next project, which was to create our own pho-
*
to collage with an art or graphic design theme. *

If you can’t alreadly tell, I love
* *
retro! So, for my photo collage I de-
cided to go old school, with a polaroid *
camera. This particular image contains *
thirteen layers, four blend modes and a
couple effects. Overall I was trying to create
*
a bright vivid image with some depth to it. *

The GRC
magazine ad is where the
sideview illustration comes into
*
place. The problem here was to cre-
ate a magazine ad for the GRC depart- *
ment at TMCC, as well as design a logo.
I wanted my ad to show the progression
of hand rendered illustration to a com-
*
puter rendered illustration. I achieved the
final look with a combination of Illustra- *
tor and Photoshop, with the final out-
put of the magazine ad in InDesign. g r c * *

The prob-

overwhelming phonebook adver-

eliminating or adding any information *
we deemed necessary. I chose to create *
my text in the shape of a stamp. I feel the
negative space of this ad would draw the
readers eye towards it in a phonebook. The
*
stamp handle was created in Illustrator and
brought into InDesign to finish the piece.
