The Attribute qualifies the nouns (pronouns) of the
sentence. It may be expressed by an adjective, a noun, a
participle and stands either in pre- or post-position to the
word it modifies. An attribute to a pronoun always follows it.
What's the most effective method of foreign language
teaching? We met on a Sunday morning. The girl has a quick
mind. I can tell you something new.
The Adverbial Modifier characterises an action, state or
quality of the sentence, denoting the time, place, manner,
degree of the action. It is expressed by adverbs and nouns with
prepositions. With verbs of motion the adverbial modifier of
place comes Immediately after the verb. If there are two or
more adverbial modifiers, the usual order is "place", "manner",
"time".
They lived there happily all their lives.
The place of such adverbial modifiers of indefinite time
as "never, usually, often, seldom, yet, Just" is before the
main verb or after the auxiliary or modal verb.
She always comes in time. Is she often late?

The main meaning of the Possessive Case Is that-- of
the idea of belonging, different kinds of
ceiiilitma. authorship, place, measure. Quality. The syntactical
function of the noun in the Possessive Case Is that of an
attribute;

5) In many words you do not know whether a male, or a
female is meant: person, doctor, friend, guest, cook, student,
teacher.
The Article
The.Definite Article
(e.g. You are the man we are looking for). It may be expressed
by a clause, a prepositional phrase, by the adjectives "all.
whole, very, right, left,wrong, only, one, opposite, main,
last, next (following), same", by ordinal numerals, by the
superlative degree of adjectives.
We got into the wrong train.
He is the only person for the position.
The second performance was a sensational success.
3) If the noun was already mentioned.
Three little kittens lost their mittens... The three
little kittens they found the mittens.
4) With unique objects or notions. They, are the sun. the
moon, the earth, the sea, the world, the universe, the horizon,
the equator, the south, the north, the west, the east, the
globe, the Milky Way, the Cosmos.
The moon moves round the earth.
He sailed round the world.
But if these nouns are preceded by descriptive attributes
the indefinite article пйу be used.
We all hope to see a better world.
"he sun shone in an unclouded sky.
;; was guided by a full moon.
5) With an adverbial modifier of place to identify The
exact place.
Jane is in the garden (at the cinema, on the beach, at the
door, in the lift, in the South, all over the country).
The indefinite article is also possible, as in: He lived
alone in a small house.

1. Names of continents, countries, provinces, cities,
towns and villages are as a rule used without any article, e.g.
Europe, France. California. Rome.
No article Is used either when these nouns have such
attributes as north(ern), south(ern). ancient, old, central.
Soviet, etc.,: Central America, South-East Asia, old England,
etc.
Some of these nouns are traditionally used with the
definite article, for example:
a) countries - the USSR, the USA. the Ukraine, the
Netherlands, the Sudan;
b) provinces - the Crimea, the Caucasus, the Ruhr, the
Transvaal, the Antarctic;
c) cities - the Hague.
2. Names of oceans, seas, channels, canals, falls, rivers
and lakes usually take the definite article, e.g.: Ще Pacific
(ocean), the Adriatic (sea), the English Channel, the Panama
Canal, the Niagara Falls, the Volga, the Baikal, the Ontario.
But when names of lakes are preceded by the noun lake
(which is often the case), no article Is used. e.g. Lake
Baikal, Lake Ontario.
3. Nanes of mountain chains and groups of islands are used
witff the definite article, e.g.: the Alps, the Urals, the
Philippines, the Bermudas, etc.
4. Names of separate mountain peaks and separate islands
are used^without any article, e.g.: Elbrus. Everest. Cuba,
Madagascar.
5. Names of deserts generally take the definite article,
e.g.: the Sahara, the Gobi. .the Kara-Kun.
6. Geographic names that are generally used without any
article may be found:
a) with the definite article when there Is a limiting
attribute:
In "Ivanhoe" Walter Scott describes the England of the
Middle Ages.
b) with the Indefinite article when there Is a descriptive
attribute:

in a whisper
in a loud (low) voice
b) With: with a look (nod. smile, yawn)
c) Like: She swimslike a fish.
She sings like a bird.
He works like a demon.
He sleeps like a log.
It seems like a dream.
He behaves like a child.
d) As: She was as happy as a lark.
She was as pretty as a calendar picture.
He was as busy as a bee.
It was as light as a feather.
A change is as good as a rest.
2. No article is used in these phrases if the noun
uncountable:
In (with) surprise
In (with) anger
It was as black as night.
She was as white as snow.
It was as green as grass.

3. The article is not used In free combinations in which
the same noun Is repeated after the prepositions from... to:
from tree to tree
from street to street
from word to word
from day to day, etc.
The number of nouns thus used is practically unlimited.
4. There is often no article with homogeneous parts of a
sentence going in pairs:
Horse and rider
Husband and wife
Lock and key
Mother and child.

Demonstrative Pronouns

The general demonstrative meaning of these pronouns is
actualized as "near and distant reference" in time and space.
This/ these identifies something near to the speaker, it is
associated with "here".

THE VERB

A modal verb is always accompanied by an infinitive -
together they form a modal predicate.

A link-verb is followed by a predicative; together they
form a nominal predicate.
•He was a fine mechanic.
She became famous.
She seemed quite happy.
I chanced to meet her last week.
Sometimes a verb Is devoid of any lexical meaning and is
then called an auxiliary verb. These verbs are: to do. to be.
to have, shall, will, combined with a notional verb they serve
to build up analytical forms.
We had seen the play before.
"Do you enjoy dancing?"
"Don't worry. I’ ll be home before evening".
Polysemantic verbs may be notional as well as structural
words.
He lias three children, (a notional verb used In the
meaning "to possess").
■ I had so give up smoking, (a structural word.: a modal verb
denoting obligation, part of a modal predicate)
I have come for your advice, (a structural word: an
auxiliary verb which serves to build up an analytical form).
II. The verb presents a system of finite and non-flnlte
lams.
The verb in its finite forms possesses the morphological
categories of person, number, tense, aspect, voice and mood.
Its syntactical function is that of the predicate of the
sentence.
The non-flnlte (or non-predlcatlve) forms are: the
Infinitive, the gerund, participle I and participle II. These
forms are often called the verbals: they can have various
functions.
III. There are four basic verb-forms in English. They are:

Present Tenses
Past Tenses
(The Past Indefinite, the Past Continuous, the Past
Perfect, the Past Perfect Continuous).
I. The Past Indefinite is a synthetic form (e.g. I worked.
He sang. ) But the interrogative and the negative forms are
built up analytically, by means of the auxiliary verb DO in the
Past Indefinite and the infinitive of the notional verb without
the particle "to" (e.g. Did you work? We did not work).
II. The Past Indefinite is used to express:
1) a single, action completed in the past and in no way
connected with the present. The time of the action is mostly
given or may be implied In the situation.
He left yesterday.
They married In 1980.
We met In Germany.
Note I. The Past Indefinite, never the Present Perfect, is
used in questions beginning with when, because ''when'1 implies a
certain moment In th? past. The answer can be either in the
Past Indefinite or in the Present Perfect, depending in the
situation:
When did you see him? - I saw him two days ago. -
I have .lust seen him.
Note II. The Past Indefinite, not the Present Perfect, Is
used in questions beginning with ''where1' because in such
questions the reference to some past moment is implied:
Where did you buy that hat?
2) a succession of actions in narration to describe thes
development of events.
I went u p the stairs. I bathed. I changed. Then I went
downstairs and cooked and served dinner for three. Then I
entertained Mr.Stent. Then I wished him a very good night,. Then
I wished Jack good-bye.
Then I took my sult-case and walked out.
3) an action which occupied a whole period of time now
over. The period of time Is usually Indicated in the sentence
by means of adverbial phrases with the preposition I q t or
during.
He worked hard for ten years until he was lucky.
I walked In the park twenty minutes yesterday.

emotionally coloured.
He was always getting coughs and colds and things.
She was constantly suffering from a cut or a burn.
4) Some verbs which are not usually used in the Continuous
form may change their meaning and be used to characterize the
person's unusual behaviour at the given past moment.
He was being kind to us.
She was only being nice.
He was happy now that his wife was feeling better.
5) The Past Continuous or the Past Indefinite is used in
the subordinate clause of a complex sentence introduced by the
conjunction "while" and the Past Indefinite is normally found
in the principal clause.
She gal still while he was playing the sonata.
While he stood there he heard the telephone ring.
before the subject (e.g. Will she have read the book by that
time? etc). In the negative form the negative particle not Is
placed after the first auxiliary (e.g. She will not have read
the book by that time., etc.).
II. The Future Perfect is used to express an acti
completed before a given future moment which is usually
indicated by an adverbial modifier.
You will have got my telegram before this letter reaches
you.

Lack of Hospitality.
A man knocks at the door of his neighbours' where he Is a
frequent but not welcome visitor. A servant girl opens the door
and says that her Master has gone out. The man says that It

Blackmail.
The great liner stopped some way from the port. The
captain said to the passengers- "You can visit the port if you

A Laconic Answer.
called Spartans and they were famous for their simple habits
and bravery.
Name of their land was Laconia, so they were sometimes
called Lacons. One of strange rules which Spartans had was that
they should apeak briefly and never use more words than were
needed. Short answer is often called laconic that is such
answer as Lacon would give.
There was 'In Northern part of Greece land called
Macedonia. This land was at one time ruled by king named
Philip. Philip of Macedonia wanted to become Master of all
