day we will abide by the
Court’s definition of absolute
majority,” Vohor told mem-
bers of Opposition including
former deputy prime minister
Joshua Kalsakau.

sworn in Minister of Lands Ste-
ven Kalsakau did not attend

welcome the UMP President.

toilet models in the villages of
Mele and Mele Maat recently
launched sanitation market-
ing in village Vanuatu. Toilet
making is about to become
a profitable business in the
rural areas.
Paul Lenthwaite of the
environmental NGO Live
and Learn says people will-
ing to take care in the con-
struction of good toilets can
make a business out of it. It
is also the sort of enterprise
which good management can
quickly build up. Toilet con-
struction is profitable.
“People generally choose

bread from someone who

are also prepared to pay for

thing people choose to have.

Mele and Melemaat do not
have enough completed san-
itary toilets and many toilets
are in the wrong place. But
Paul Lenthwaite is convinced
the models created there will
convince families it need not
be expensive to obtain a pro-
fessionally constructed, sani-
tary and odour-free toilet.
Paul Lenthwaite has super-
vised the regional Live and
Learn project in Fiji, the Solo-
mons and PNG. It was due to
finish in all countries in June,
but Vanuatu was a little late
getting into the act and it has
been extended until the end

Urban communities are not
being targeted. The project is
aimed at villages, and logical-
ly has started in the biggest.
Mele has too many bush toi-
lets, far too few properly san-
itary facilities. The project
has worked with two groups
which have decided to work
as one

price, with house owners.
Compost toilets are avail-
able. There are both venti-
lated and improved toilets
which can be constructed.

workshop on the World Trade
Organisation (WTO) to be
held in Parliament Chambers
for all Members of Parliament
yesterday was reportedly
postponed by the Prime Min-
ister on the grounds that he
would like to meet with the
members of the WTO first.
Both politicians, interest-
ed members of the public and
students who turned up at
Parliament House were told
that the workshop was post-
poned to another date to be
announced later. It remains
to be seen if both sides of the
House would be prepared
to sit together for a learn-
ing experience on the World
Trade Organisation.
Meanwhile critics are ada-
mant Vanuatu is not ready to
join the WTO. An independ-
ent administrator who asked
not to be named said, “I have
a lot of respect for the Brus-
sels-based Ambassador Mr
Roy Micky Joy for champion-
ing the positive side of WTO
but it is clear that Vanuatu is
not ready to join the global
trade organization.

WTO whereas in Vanuatu the
percentage of literacy among
the population is about 34%
so Vanuatu has a long way
yet to go to qualify to join the
WTO,” he said.
“If we have to follow the
bottoms up approach, it
means that the grassroots in
the rural areas must first be
educated enough in order to
understand what WTO is all
about before we can decide
whether or not we are ready
to sign up.”
He said at this stage, the
majority of people in the
rural areas do not have any
idea about the WTO.
“What we have is a small
group of public servants and
politicians in Port Vila who
insist that Vanuatu is ready to
join the WTO while the 70%
majority of the rural popula-
tion are still in the dark,” he
said.
Meanwhile the Depart-
ment of Trade and Industries
is organising a further meet-
ing on the WTO beginning at
8.30 this morning and wel-
comes the media to attend.

ebrating anyone’s death but cer-
tainly as President Barak Obama
has said Bin Laden didn’t real-
ly care about slaughtering 3000
people on 9/11 and his friends
have no care for slaughtering
people elsewhere in the world.
“As it relates to the Pacific
region, I think that for the small-
er Pacific Islands you still have
to be vigilant about your immi-
gration control, your port secu-
rity because there are people
out there who do not like coun-
tries to believe in represent-
ative governments, freedom
of speech and the kind of val-
ues that Ni-Vanuatu and the
American people hold near to
their hearts.”
Moreover, Mr Taylor stated
the United States of America
doesn’t condone human rights
violation anywhere in the world
and said the West Papua is an
internal Indonesian Government
matter.
“The West Papuans and the
Indonesian Government need to
work out their dispute as it is an
internal Indonesian matter but
human rights violation cannot
be condoned.”
In regards to millennium
challenge compact, Ambassador
Taylor said Vanuatu does not
meet the criteria of getting the
second millennium challenge.
“We don’t know whether we
will be able to get another mil-
lennium challenge compact or
not. At this time Vanuatu doesn’t
meet the criteria, the govern-
ment is aware of what it is.”
Mr Teddy said the United
States will continue to work
with the Vanuatu Government
to try to get Vanuatu a second
compact.

Young People Spearhead a

Movement for Peace in the Pacific
Young people from
Australia, the Cook Islands,
Kiribati, Fiji, the Federat-
ed States of Micronesia, the
Marshall Islands, New Zea-
land, Niue, Papua New Guin-
ea, Samoa, the Solomon
Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and
Vanuatu will congregate next
month in New Zealand to
build skills to create a more
peaceful region.
The interactive ‘Wansol-
wara Youth Peace-building
Conference’ (W.Y.P.C) will
empower young people with
peace-building and advocacy
skills to take leadership and
action on issues that cause
conflict in their communities.
Wansolwara is a pidgin word
meaning ‘one ocean-one peo-
ple’.
The peace-building initi-
ative has been developed by
young people who represent-
ed the region at the Nkabom
C o m m o n w e a l t h Yo u t h
Leadership Programme
in 2010 in Rwanda, Afri-
ca. The Nkabom Common-
wealth Youth Leadership
Programme is one of the
Royal Commonwealth Soci-
ety’s flagship youth projects.
Nkabom (pronounced ink-a-
bom) means ‘coming togeth-
er’ in parts of Ghana, and
develops a youth-led net-
work of young leaders who
pioneer peace building initi-
atives in their communities,
countries and beyond.
Pacific Nkabom Youth
Steering Committee mem-
ber Ms Katrina Ma’u of
Tonga says “this conference
will provide training for
young people so that they
are equipped with the tools
to formulate action plans
around issues of conflict
most relevant to their coun-
tries.”
“This conference is impor-
tant because young peo-
ple are not given sufficient
opportunities to build peace
and harmony in their societies
both for their own generation
and the wider society due to
a lack of capacity, political
voice, and access to resourc-
es. This conference helps to
address that,” says Ms Ma’u.
Commonwealth Youth Pro-
gramme (CYP) Pacific Centre
Programme Manager Paul
Peteru says “CYP believes in
supporting young people to
develop their potential, skills
and abilities, including taking
leadership in conflict preven-
tion, conflict resolution and
peace-building efforts.”

Pacific region as case studies
•Engage, educate and
embed key themes and the-
ories which will give young
people the confidence to
take action and enable them
to assist their governments
and stakeholders to devise

•Enable cultural exchange
between participants and
engage young people in key
topics affecting their coun-
tries.
• Foster the creative gener-
ation of thematically targeted
projects aimed at increasing
youth involvement and partic-
ipation in the wider commu-
nity, based on the experience
of a broad cross-section of
Pacific young people.
•Train young people in
youth leadership, negotiation
and advocacy skills, within a
Pacific context.

Following the instability in Vanuatu’s political affairs, Godwin Ligo compiled this from independent information
that he received as well phone calls made by members of the public to Daily Post over the past few days.
The public opinion on the
present political situation in
Vanuatu is that Head of State
should dissolve Parliament
and call for early elections.
The most shared public
views and concerns are that
public funds are running out
fast on pay out of politicians
every time there is change in
government. And not only
that but the continued polit-
ical changes and instability
hinders economic and social
developments.
“It is quite obvious that the
52 members of parliament
(MPs) all want to become a
State minister and if this is
their hearts’ desire then let
them use their legislative
power to make rules that
would allow for 52 Ministe-
rial portfolios in the Execu-
tive,” one frustrated member
of the public told Daily Post
yesterday over the phone.
Another caller comment-
ed that: “Surely we cannot
change government every
month or two months for the
sake of ministerial positions.
But if this is the case, then
let the Head of State dissolve
Parliament and call for early
elections,” he said.
“Why can’t the Head of
State do something like dis-
solve the Parliament and let
the people decide rather than
political parties deciding who
to marry and divorce every
now and then,” one frustrat-
ed woman commented to
Daily Post by phone.
A university student who
also asked not to be name
said in a telephone call to
Daily Post: “It seems that all
52 Members of Parliament
want to become a good gov-
ernment rather than accept to
be a good and effective oppo-
sition ,” the university student
told DailyPost.
Opinion voiced public-
ly and relayed to Daily Post
indicated that the public at
large have had enough of the
past and present changes in
government and are calling
on the Head of State to dis-
solve Parliament and call for
an early parliamentary elec-
tion.
On the question of prep-
arations and funding for a
snap general election, Daily
Post could not get comments
from the Electoral Office as
the Principal Electoral Officer
is currently away overseas.
One caller told Daily Post
that the Head of State should
act to dissolve Parliament and
call for the people to decide
once again on the political
fate of the nation.
Generally, members of the
public shared the view that
if parliament is dissolved
and the country goes to poll,
many of the current MPs will
never make it back to parlia-
ment.
“I think the people of
Vanuatu are mature enough
now to choose MPs that can
put the real interest of the
nation first before their own
interest,” one such person
that contacted Daily Post
commented.
One politician who did
not want to be named said:
“I honestly think that the
Head of State should dis-
solve Parliament, because
what happens if the govern-
ment changes again this Fri-
day when Parliament meets
and then changes again?” he
questioned.
“To go to poll again is good
as long as we don’t end up
again with the same politi-
cal parties make up -so many
parties and groupings oth-
erwise it would be back to
square one at great cost for
nothing ,” one former politi-
cian told Daily Post.
“My honest opinion is that
there has to be a change of
political mentality in that pol-
iticians must not think that
because they are elected into
Parliament, they are auto-
matically entitled to become
a state minister whether they
have the necessary qualifica-
tions or not. They should be
content of being an MP and
help their constituents or
electors because there’s so

A school teacher in Port
Vila who did not want to be
named said: “Such chang-
es of governments affects
us and the students because
we tell them who the gov-
ernment ministers were

again that the government
has changed again and these
are the new ministers and

away yet or many students
could fail some of their sub-
jects,” he said.
A ni-Vanuatu businessman
had this to say to Daily Post:
“The private sector is doing its
best. Are MPs serious about
economic and social devel-
opment of the nation? How
can you deal with one min-
ister this week and the next
week you go through the
same thing all over again with
another minister in the same
ministry?” he questioned.
Prime Minister Meltek Sato
Kilman said in his speech last
Friday after he was re-instat-
ed by the Court that he does
not rule out an option of a
dissolution of parliament
but at the same time said the
Head of State is aware of the
overall political situation that
the country is faced with, but
did not elaborate whether the
cabinet will resolve to request
the Head of State to dissolve
parliament if political insta-
bility continues.
“We will prove this Fri-
day when Parliament meets
that the government does
have numbers,” the re-instat-
ed Prime Minister Kilman
told Daily Post last Saturday
evening.

servants get refresher course

The Alliance Francais in
Luganville conducted a four
day French course last week at
the Alliance office.
The “Writing of administra-
tive documents and Grammar”
course came in as a refresh-
er for French-speaking civil
servants in Luganville aimed
at enhancing their skills to be
productive in French so they
can use this language better at
work.
This training is part of the
program “Francohponie and
civil servant,” launched by the
Government of Vanuatu, and
financed by the French Embas-
sy.
Reports from the Alliance
office showed that the course
was well attended within the
four days and there were elev-
en members altogether who
attended the course from
8.00am to 12.00pm each day.
So far participants were satis-
fied with what they gain and
anticipated more in the future.

99.9% of our population know noth-
ing about WTO, why must Trade and
Customs departments decide for
them? This is madness at its best.
The supporters of WTO have had
their say in the media and have not
convinced the citizens.
Let the whole population vote to
remain outside WTO in the upcom-

PNG seeks to expand
tuna processing capacity
Papua New Guinea is
engaged in moves to become
one of the world’s leading fish
processing nations by process-
ing a larger catch and encour-
aging other Pacific nations to
send fish to its canneries.
Sixty percent of the world’s
tuna caught is in the Pacific,
and over the past decade,
fish processing has become a
major employer in PNG.
But the eight tuna-rich
Pacific Island nations, known
as the PNA group, have strug-
gled to bring jobs onshore,
according to Papua New
Guinea’s National Fisheries
Authority managing director
Sylvester Pokajam.
He wants to improve the
situation.
“We are looking at the fish-
ery within the PNA of about
1.2 million metric tonnes
sustainably harvested every
year,” he told Radio Austral-
ia.
“We want to also extend
our call to the Pacific, espe-
cially the PNA countries,
to earn more from their
resources rather than just
relying on the access fees so
we try to develop in that are
to see how we can all work
together as one group to ben-
efit together.”

this is more or less the centre

Mr Pokojam says that job
growth is forecast to contin-
ue, and rejected suggestions
that tuna fishing over the
long term may be unsustain-
able.

that fish will then come to
PNG and someone is going to
suffer. Its going to be the can-
neries in Asia, mainly Bang-
kok and Thailand.”
But he says other canneries
in the Pacific would benefit
from PNG’s plan to build up
its domestic industry.
“We will work together as
a party - we will work with
Solomon Islands,” Mr Poka-
jam said.
“I don’t want to make it
in such a way that my other
co-members think that I am
greedy.”

Israeli soldiers have shot
dead at least 12 people as
Palestinians massed on the
borders of Lebanon, Syria,
the Gaza Strip and the West
Bank to mark the 63rd anni-
versary of the creation of
Israel.
Palestinians call it the
“Nakba”, or catastrophe - the
anniversary of the day Israel
became a state and hundreds

US Senator Kerry in Pakistan for high-
level talks
United States Senator John Kerry has arrived for
top-level talks in Pakistan, the first senior US visitor to
Islamabad since the killing of Osama bin Laden earlier
this month. Mr Kerry’s visit comes two days after
Pakistan’s parliament called for an end to US drone
strikes on its territory. Pakistani MPs also demanded
that operations similar to that which discovered and
killed the al-Qaeda leader never be repeated. John
Kerry, who is the chair of the US Foreign Relations
Committee, will meet Pakistan’s president and the
prime minister. Arriving in Islamabad, he warned that
Pakistan-US relations are at a critical point, and
warned of serious consequences unless Pakistan
backs Washington’s continued war on terror.
“It is fair to say that some of my colleagues in the
House, in Senate, have deep reservations about
whether or not Pakistan is committed to the same
goals or prepared to be a full partner in pursuing those
goals,” he told reporters. “There are calls in some
quarters in Congress for a shift in the aid program
unless there is an improvement in the current situation.”
Separately, six people in the United States and
Pakistan have been charged with providing financial
and material support to the Pakistani Taliban. All six
people are of Pakistani origin. They face a range of
charges and if convicted each offence could carry a
potential 15 year prison sentence. Among the six is
the 76 year-old Imam of the Miami mosque, his son and
a daughter who lives in Pakistan. Last week the

Gays and lesbians clash with
preachers in South Australia
Police have been forced to intervene during a clash
between the gay and lesbian community and a group
of street preachers in the South Australian capital,
Adelaide. The violence broke out during a rally to mark
International Day Against Homophobia and
Transphobia. The protest began peacefully with 150
members of the gay and lesbian community gathering
to stage a mass wedding, calling for equal rights for
gay marriage. But when members of the Christian
Street Church crashed the rally, tension escalated.
The Church’s Damien Gloury says he was mobbed and
hit. We’re just preaching the bible, we’re quoting the
bible and it says that homosexuality is a sin,” he said.
In the heat of the violence, a wheelchair-bound activist
was thrown on the ground. Protestor James Vigos
says the gay and lesbian community won’t be
disheartened by the violence. “A very vocal minority
can’t stop progress,” he said. Police were called in and
several street preachers were forcibly removed, but no
one was arrested.

handcuffs on sex assault charges

fight charges of assaulting
a hotel chambermaid, amid
an explosive sex scandal
that could bury his dreams
of becoming the next French
president.
The veteran French pol-
itician, who was arrested
at the weekend after a New
York chambermaid accused
him of sexual assault, would
defend himself against the
allegations, lawyer Benjamin
Brafman told reporters.
“He intends to vigorous-
ly defend these charges and
denies any wrongdoing,”
Mr Brafman said outside the
courthouse where the IMF
chief will appear on Monday.
Mr Strauss-Kahn left a
police station in Harlem
late on  Sunday (early
Monday afternoon AEST) in
handcuffs.
The bombshell news
of his arrest has left the
International Monetary Fund
reeling, coming ahead of crit-
ical talks on repairing the
painful fallout of the debt cri-
sis sweeping the euro zone.
Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, has
hired a barrage of top law-
yers, as questions also swirled
over whether he had the right
to diplomatic immunity.
Another lawyer William
Taylor told journalists out-
side the Manhattan court
house that “we’ve agreed to
postpone the arraignment
until tomorrow [Monday]
morning.”
Mr Taylor said the delay
was linked to Mr Strauss-
Kahn undergoing further test-
ing by police searching for
evidence.
“Our client willingly con-
sented to a scientific and
forensic examination,” Mr
Taylor said, adding the IMF
chief was “tired but he’s
fine”.
Mr Strauss-Kahn was taken
off an Air France flight on
Saturday just minutes before

her to perform a sexual act
on him,” a police spokesman
told Agence France-Presse.
He described the victim as
“female, black, 32 years old”,
but could not confirm details
given in The New York Times
that the IMF chief pulled her
into the bedroom and on to
the bed and then locked the
door.
She managed to fight him
off, but he dragged her down
the hallway to the bathroom,
where he sexually assaulted

say they are being forcibly
moved out of their houses to
make way for the country’s
redeveloped railway system.
The ABC’s Southeast Asia
correspondent, Zoe Daniel,
says more than 160 families
from a community in the cap-
ital, Phnom Penh, have been
offered a few hundred dollars’
compensation for their houses
by local authorities.
The residents say the com-
pensation they’ve been offered
isn’t enough. Some say they
will lose buildings they live
and work in, while others are
angry that they’ve been told to
move about 20km out of the
city.
Residents who don’t want to
leave say they’ve been threat-
ened by local officials.
One resident says she was
asked to accept the deal by
giving a thumb print.
“If I don’t, they will bulldoze
my house, they will hire [a]
drug user to burn my house,”
she said.
The railway project being
is built with funding from the
Australian aid agency AusAID
and the Asian Development
Bank, and that marked build-
ings within 3.5 metres of the
line are scheduled to be par-
tially or fully demolished.
ADB spokesman Peter Bloch
has rejected reports of intimi-
dation and threats.
“Resettlement is always a

with NGOs, are preparing a

many of those resettled are
understood to have left.
The Asian Development
Bank’s criteria for resettlement
outlines the need for people
to be in the same or better
circumstances after they are
moved.
Mr Pred says BABC believes
the large number of families
that have left Battambang is
an indication that the resettle-
ment process has failed.
“Obviously, if people are
not happy to stay here, where
they’ve been moved, then that
shows that they weren’t reset-
tled adequately,” he said.
AusAID declined to com-
ment but has said that relo-
cating people affected by the
new rail line is the respon-
sibility of the Cambodian
Government.
The new railway is expect-
ed to be operational by the
end of next year, and is to be
run by an Australian firm, Toll
Holdings.

Australia and Pacific Islands
are becoming more and
more popular, and here are
three you can join this year.
Time is fast approaching for
the fifth Annual Brisbane to
Vanuatu Yacht Rally, there’s
the Louisiades Rally in Sep-
tember and the annual Port-
2Port (Port Vila in Vanuatu to
Port Bundaberg in Australia) is
promoting well in advance of
their October departure:
Brisbane to Vanuatu:
Supporting Health and Educa-
tion in Vanuatu, the Brisbane
to Vanuatu Rally is departing
on Saturday May 14th, with
an expected arrival before 28th
May at Luganville , Espiritu
Santo Northern Vanuatu.
Thirteen yachts are cur-
rently registered to depart,
ranging in length from 28 ft to
50 ft. A stopover at beautiful
Huon and Chesterfield Reef en
route to Luganville, Vanuatu is
planned.

Chechnya All Stars help launch stadium
A team of former
international footballers has
played a controversial match
in Grozny, the capital of the
Russian republic of Chech-
nya.
The event was staged for
the opening of the city’s new
30,000-seater stadium.
But campaigners say the
footballers were being used
for propaganda by Chechn-
ya’s President Ramzan Kady-
rov.
The roads leading to the
new stadium were all blocked
with huge, armoured trucks.
Troops manned checkpoints
and those people allowed
through on foot walked
past more soldiers every 50
metres.
All day we watched heavily-
armed convoys driving through
the city.
The entertainment started
with singers and local dance
troupes. A fireworks display
followed, accompanied by the
anthem used by the European
Champions League.
The choice of music was a
sign that the local club Terek
Grozny, currently playing in
Russia’s Premier League, has
European ambitions.
Then came the match.

All Stars team, which included
Luis Figo, Fabien Barthez and

shown to the crowd which filled
the stadium. Human rights
groups who are critical of the
president say the footballers
were being used by him.
But Robbie Fowler told the
BBC that they were there for
one reason only, that of the
glorious game.
He said: “Politics aside, we
are not here for that. We are
here to play football, solely
football.”

Such violence is very rare
now in Chechnya, and the city
- once infamous for being
little more than rubble and
shell-holes - has been almost
entirely rebuilt.
It is an extraordinary
achievement, though it is
unclear where all the money
came from for such an
impressively quick recovery,
or for the new stadium, or for
the unknown fees paid to the
team of fading football super-
stars who opened it.

The Louisiades Archipelago
is 100 nautical miles east of
‘mainland’ Papua New Guin-
ea, 520 nautical miles north-
east of Cairns. They are truly
paradise found, 100 beautiful
islands with a friendly people
living a very simple life who

sand cays, lagoon reefs, lime-
stone outcrops (up lifted coral
reefs) and continental islands
with many safe anchorages.

to win Rome Masters

continued his remarkable
unbeaten run with victory
over Rafael Nadal in the final
of the Rome Masters.
The Serb, who was pushed
all the way by Andy Mur-
ray in Saturday’s semi-final,
played some superb ten-
nis to triumph 6-4 6-4 and
make it 37 wins this year -
39 in total.
He looked comfortable
and never allowed Nadal,
a five-time title winner in
Rome, to take the initiative.
Nadal was forced into
doing most of the chasing
and looked second-best.
The Serb is now closing in
on Guillermo Vilas’s record
of 46 consecutive wins, set
in 1977.
Djokovic, who won the
Australian Open in Janu-
ary, can add Rome to a list
of titles won in 2011 that

ers from many nations, many
of them circumnavigators
who use the rally as a fun
way to finish their Pacific
crossing, with many children
taking part as part of a family
adventure.

O-League altered,
Nations Cup revived
Oceania Football
Confederation (OFC) has
rubber-stamped changes to
the O-League which will see
the two New Zealand clubs
placed in separate qualify-
ing groups, starting from the
2011-12 season.
The OFC also announced
an operating surplus of almost
$1 million for 2010 and reaf-
firmed its support for the re-
election of Fifa president Sepp
Blatter at its executive meeting
in Auckland.
For the first time the top two
New Zealand clubs - Waitakere
Tahiti have made their
intentions at the OFC Fut-
sal Championship clear with
an impressive 6-0 win over
Tuvalu in the opening match
of the tournament.

OFC renews support for President
Blatter
As the 61st FIFA Congress draws closer, OFC has
confirmed its support for the re-election of FIFA President
Joseph Blatter citing a range of initiatives that have positively
impacted the region under his leadership.
The OFC Executive Committee met in Auckland today to
discuss key issues including the upcoming FIFA election
that will be held in Zurich on the 1st of June.
OFC President David Chung says all members agreed that
the current FIFA administration has had a significant impact
on the development and popularity of football across the
Pacific.
While all Member Associations have an independent right
to decide on which candidate to vote for, President Chung
says today’s decision highlights the unity and transparency
within the Confederation.

‘Bullet’ package found at Celtic
Strathclyde Police are investigating a suspicious package
which has been found at Celtic Park. BBC Scotland
understands the parcel, discovered at the club’s stadium
on Thursday morning, contained a bullet. It was addressed
to Celtic manager Neil Lennon but was not opened and
police were informed. The incident is not being linked to
the arrest of two men by police probing parcel bombs sent
to Lennon, two high-profile fans and a republican group. The
Celtic manager was also the target of an alleged assault
during his side’s 3-0 win over Hearts and Tynecastle on
Wednesday.

in Rome Masters
Roger Federer has crashed out of the Rome Masters
in round three, losing 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 6-7 (4-7) to Richard
Gasquet. The world number three, 29, made several
uncharacteristic errors against his French opponent, who he
had beaten in their previous eight meetings. “I should never
have lost,” said Federer. “He knows how close he came to
losing. I had multiple chances.” Novak Djokovic recorded
his 36th successive victory while world number one Rafael
Nadal also progressed. Serbian Djokovic made light work

French League suspends Taye Taiwo
The French league suspended Marseille defender Taye
Taiwo on Thursday for one match after he joined Marseille
fans in singing an expletive-laced song about rival Paris
Saint-Germain following last month’s League Cup final win.
After Marseille beat Montpellier 1-0 to retain the League Cup
trophy at Stade de France, Taiwo grabbed a microphone
and sang with Marseille fans in a mocking and insulting
song about PSG -- Marseille’s archrival. The French league
gave Taiwo another two games in a suspended sentence
-- it would be invoked for a repeat offense.

UEFA charges Sergio Busquets for slur
UEFA has charged Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets
with racially insulting Real Madrid defender Marcelo during
the Champions League semifinals. UEFA says its disciplinary
panel will hear the case on Sunday. Busquets is alleged
to have violated UEFA’s discrimination rules “by directing
racist abuse towards” Marcelo, who is black. Marcelo says
that Busquets called him a “monkey” during a rough first-leg
match April 27 in Madrid. UEFA said it took statements from
Marcelo and Madrid and used video evidence of a moment
when the two players clashed.
Barcelona won that game 2-0 and then tied 1-1 to advance
to the final against Manchester United.
