There are nine simple questions to be answered by those who will be sitting for the TSE.

As the
Educational Testing Service and the TSE explicitly state, the accuracy of your response is not
considered in the score. What that means is that what you say doesn't matter, as long as you are
speaking directly to the question at hand. The object of making the questions so elementary is to
allow test-takers to show her/her verbal communicative skills in North American English without other
factors getting in the way. According to TSE low scores have occurred with those taking the test
allowing those other factors (attempting to give "clever" answers) mask their English-speaking
abilities. Concentration should be on clear communication, not on answer construction.

Question one: You will be asked to tell what a 6-picture cartoon means to you. The simplicity of the
picture story is sometimes deceiving for some. They want to make it a lot more complicated than it is.
Does the story make sense to you or not? Say what you are feeling. If the story really doesn't make
sense to you just say so and then state why it doesn't make sense. If it does make sense then just tell
the simple story. This is the perfect time for an adult to play "pretend" and not be embarrassed. After
all, it is just a simple cartoon made up of six pictures.

Question two: A follow-up question about something in the picture story. This could be any topic or
subject regarding any item in any picture panel. Do you have an opinion about the subject or not?
Have you ever contemplated this subject or not? State your experience on the subject, and if you
don't have any, go ahead and say it.

Question three: This will be a question that is asking your opinion about a simple topic. Many of the
topics used in this question parallel the topics given in the TOEFL. Go ahead and use them to
practicing developing quick, simple, opinions. Do you like the topic given or do you not like it? You can
give both sides (positive or negative) or just choose the side you are familiar with. Give simple
reasons or arguments. No sense getting too intense or specific with your arguments - you are going to
win anyhow.

Question four: You will be asked to give your opinion about your preferences (what you would like to
do). This is a perfect time to tell the rater about your personal dreams and aspirations. Have fun with
this one!

Question five: The graph question. Again, what do you see? Does it make sense? Is is something you
are familiar with or not? (Be careful though, do not speculate on any reasons why the graph shows
what it does. Your opinion on that subject will be asked in the next question. However, don't get
flustered, if you do happen to enter that area during this response. Just re-state it for the next
question and be confident. If this should happen to you try saying something like: "Oh, I guess I
started to answer this question during the last response. As I stated before . . .). If a line graph, when
viewed from the right direction, appears to be a an outline of your Aunt Ethel's face, then maybe you
want to say that - if given in clear, perfectly understandable English it will probably make for a
"perfect" answer.

Question six: What do you think are some of the reasons for the changes shown in the graph. Again,
this is a question you can have fun with. Make up any story you want. No one is evaluating you on the
soundness of your opinion.

Question seven: You are asked to give a social greeting. Just remember that if it is in reference to a
funeral do not say "congratulations". Other than that, whatever you might say will be appropriate. It
is you speaking about an event to a friend. Imagine what you would want said to you if these
circumstances entered your life. Again, there is no prohibition against having fun if it is a celebratory
type of greeting. If you have ever met another human being in your life you are probably expert in
social greetings and just don't know it. Most higher forms of life have continual social greetings. Even
birds sing to each other.
Question eight: This is the customer complaint. Everyone complains, even you, right? Why not
imagine how you would want to be treated if this had happened to you. What would you like as a
resolution? Go ahead and say it. Just remember that you are responding to a telephone message by
making a return telephone call. What do you say during a phone conversation?: "Hello" and
"Goodbye", right?

Question nine: The best is reserved for the last. You are being asked to give a report to your boss
about a conversation you are listening in on (you are an eavesdropper). The response has to be made
as a voice-mail message, to your boss, about that doggone conversation you listened in on. What do
you do when leaving a voice-mail message?: a.) "Hello", then state who you are, b.) The time, c.) The
date, d.) Who the message is for, e.) The reason for the message, f.) the message, and, g.)
"Goodbye". Use the visual given to you in the printed material as a guideline. Don't waste time and
energy trying to interpret or understand it - no one cares anyhow and it won't improve your score. In
your report you should give the past, present, and future situations. If you make a mistake as to
those, who cares? It is your opinion on those situations and that cannot be wrong.

Just make sure that you speak in clear, understandable, well-pronounced, grammatically-correct
North American English during each response. That is the most, if not only, important factor.

Good luck to all. I will be saying prayers for your success, and I hope others do the same. Make sure
to practice your English-speaking skills.

I've just found this document. In this document, it has many information about campus lives but I
don't know whether it's correct or not? If anyone know please correct it.

Hint 1. Be familiar with the test.

The Listening Comprehension section will be the first section you will be required to take. It has a total
of 50 questions, and all the questions are oral and played to you from a tape recorder. The multiple-
choice answers are all written on the test. You must choose the best answer to each spoken question.
The test administrator will give you 35 minutes to complete the section, so you will have to learn to
work quickly. Follow these study tips in addition to taking the practice exams so that you will become
more familiar with the Listening Comprehension section. The more familiar you become with this
section, the less time it will take you to choose the correct answer.
There are three parts to the Listening Comprehension test. These are:

A. Dialogues (25 questions): You will hear an informal conversation between a man and a woman.
Usually each person speaks only once. A third voice (man or woman) then asks a question about their
conversation. You must select the written statement which ANSWERS THE QUESTION.
B. Extended Conversations (15 questions): You will hear two people having a conversation. A third
voice then asks four or five questions about the mini-talk. You must select the written statement
which ANSWERS THE QUESTION.
C. Short Talks (10 questions): You will hear one person talking. A second voice will then ask four or
five questions about the talk. You must select the written statement which ANSWERS THE QUESTION.

Hint 2 Recognize the correct answers.

The correct answer usually uses a vocabulary word or a structure which is close in meaning to the
original statement, but which LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT. Often the correct answer will use a different
noun, verb, or sentence structure.
Example: Structural Difference
You will hear: She has so many students she can hardly grade all the papers in time.
Correct choice: There are many students in her class.
Example: Opposite
You will hear: I am as quiet as I can be.
Correct choice: I never make any noise.
Example: Vocabulary Difference
You will hear: Jane wanted to go to the beach on Saturday but she has homework due on Monday.
Correct choice: Jane is unable to go to the beach.

Hint 3 Recognize the wrong answers.

The test may use words which have the same pronunciation but different meanings or spellings.
Example: "sun" vs. "son"
You will hear: The sun is out today.
Wrong answer: Her son went out to play.

The test may use words that have a similar pronunciation but do NOT MEAN the same thing. Be
careful of teens vs. tens (13 vs. 30, 15 vs. 50).
Example: "thirteen" vs. "thirty"
You will hear: The teacher has thirteen students in the class.
Wrong answer: Thirty students are in the class.
Example: "work" vs. "walk"
You will hear: If you work fast, you can make it in time.
Wrong answer: You must walk quickly to get there on time.

The test may use statements that are the opposite of what was said.
Example:
You will hear: I used to live in Chicago.
Wrong answer: I live in Chicago now.

The test may use statements that might be true in life but were not mentioned on the tape by the
speaker.
Example:
You will hear: Ben promised Carol a letter.
Wrong answer: Ben made promises easily.

Hint 4: Be prepared to infer meaning.

Some statements or answers go beyond their direct meaning. They require a cultural inference. You
will need to know the culture and some terms to select the correct answer. In the example below, you
must infer that if coffee cups are presented, people are going to drink coffee, not tea, lemonade or
water.
Example:
You will hear: Please put the coffee cups on the breakfast table.
Correct answer: Coffee will be served with breakfast.

Hint 5: Be prepared to choose answers with partial information.

Some answers include ONLY PART of the information which the speaker mentions on the tape. Some
of the information given in the statement is NOT present in the answer.
Example:
You will hear: Linda sold her uncle's house after his death.
Correct answer: Linda's uncle died.
Hint 6 Be prepared to make mathematical calculations.
The speaker will give you the information, but the correct answer requires some simple calculations.
Example:
You will hear: The cookies are two dollars per pound. I bought three pounds.
Correct answer: I paid $6.00.

Hint 7 Be familiar with forms of measurement in the United States.

It is good to remember some general facts. Remember that when the speakers refer to temperature,
they are using Fahrenheit even though they won't directly say Fahrenheit. Here are some helpful
things to remember:
I meter - a little more than a yard
80 degrees - hot weather
90 degrees - very hot weather
32 degrees - cold weather (water freezes)
98.6 degrees - normal body temperature
Example:
You will hear: His temperature was 103 degrees.
Correct answer: He needed to see a doctor because he was very sick
Remember that some forms of measurement can be expressed in many different
ways. The speaker on the tape may use one word, but the answer may appear written
in a different form. For example:
a dollar - a bill - a buck
a couple of dollars-$2.00-two dollars
a dozen - 12
a pound -lb.-16 ounces
4 quarts - 4 qts. - 1 gallon
Example:
You will hear: The eggs were three dollars a dozen. I bought thirty-six.
Correct answer: I paid $9.00.

Hint8 Remember that negatives are expressed in many ways in English.

Negatives can be expressed in English by using sentence structure or a conjunction or a vocabulary
word or prefix. For example:
Sentence structure: "She can't sing."
Conjunction: "She can do anything, but sing."
Vocabulary word: "She sings in monotone."
Prefix: "She is unable to sing."
Example: "but" - "not" - "un-"
You will hear: The computer will be available any time but one o'clock.
Correct answer: The computer will not be available at one o'clock.
Correct answer: The computer is unavailable at one o'clock.

Hint 9: Know the geography of the United States.

You need to know which states are found in what is referred to as "the North,"
"the East," "New England," "the West," and "the South." It's also important to
remember that the climate in the West and South is usually hot or moderate all
year, while the climate in the North and East is warm during the summer but very
cold during the winter.
Example:
You will hear: She's living in New York right now, but she wants to move to Texas.
Correct answer: She wants to live in the South.

Hint 10 Know the seasons of the year and the months that go with them.

Summer-June 21 through September 20 (warm/hot climate)

Fall - September 21 through December 20 (warm/cool climate)
Winter - December 21 through March 20 (cold climate)
Spring - March 21 through June 20 (rainy/moderate climate)

Hint 11 Know the typical university schedules in the United States.

Each university or college decides its own schedules. However, there are some traditional schedules.
Here is one:
Fall semester - (14 weeks) September through part of December
Semester break - (4 weeks) the free period at the end of December and beginning of January when
no classes are held
Spring semester - ( 14 weeks) part of January through part of May
Spring break - ( 1 week) vacation time in the middle of spring semester which may or may not occur
during the Christian holiday of Easter
Summer session - courses offered during June, July, or August for 4, 6, or 8 weeks each

Hint 12 Know the major holidays in the United States.

Classes do not meet on some of these holidays. You will need to know what these holidays celebrate
in order to answer some questions on the TOEFL exam. Here are some major holidays:
Labor Day - the first Monday in September - a national holiday in celebration of working people.
Schools and colleges usually begin their fall semester the day after Labor Day.
Halloween - October 31-a fun holiday for all. Children dress up as ghosts, or witches, or other
characters and go to houses to receive candy. Adults have parties.
Thanksgiving - the fourth Thursday in November - a national celebration of thanks for surviving
difficult weather and other conditions in the settling of the United States. This holiday often includes
the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday which follow it.
Christmas - December 25 - a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ which is celebrated
nationally. Most businesses and schools are closed this day. Campuses are usually closed also.
New Year's - January I - a big celebration of the beginning of the year. Many businesses are closed
and many parties last until January 2.
Valentine's Day - February 14-a celebration of love for boyfriends, girlfriends, married couples, and
close relatives. Schools do not close for this holiday.
Mother's Day - the second Sunday in May - tribute to mothers.
Memorial Day - the last Monday in May - a national holiday in celebration of all those who have died in
military service to the United States.
Father's Day - the third Sunday in June - tribute to fathers.
Independence Day - July 4 - celebration of the independence of the United States. Many parades,
flags, and evening fireworks displays appear on this day.

Hint 13 Remember the sequence of events referred to in mini-talks.

Mini-talks often mention inventions or discoveries. Remember the sequence of events in these
discoveries because questions sometimes ask for this sequence. For example:
"What was the first discovery that Salk made?"

Hint 14 Guess the meaning of metaphoric idioms.

Sometimes idioms are really metaphors. They are words which have extended their concrete meaning.
If you don't know an idiomatic expression, make a guess based on what you already know about the
words. For example:
"Just stick to your subject." - "stick" means don't leave your subject "Sam bugged me." - "bugged"
means bothered or annoyed
Example:
You will hear: John tried to get at the root of the problem.
Correct answer: John wanted to understand the cause of the problem.

Hint 15 Know something about daily life in the United States.

Sometimes terms will be used which carry cultural information. You will need to know the meaning of
the term in order to select the correct answer. Many culturally based terms are used during the
listening comprehension test.
Example; (A football game is divided into four quarters.)
You will hear: The football game started at two o'clock, and they arrived just in time for the third
quarter.
Correct answer: They were very late.
Example: (A "round-trip ticket" - going to a place and returning to the place of origin)
You will hear: "I'd like a round-trip ticket from Chicago to Atlanta." Correct answer: "I want a ticket to
Atlanta and back to Chicago.
Some terms are important to know:
COMMUNICATIONS:
telephone operator - the person who handles calls personally
answering machine - the machine which plays a recorded message when the person does not answer
the phone and on which you leave your message for that person
a collect call - the person receiving the call agrees to pay for it
person-to-person - the operator makes the call and the caller pays for the call only if the exact person
requested answers
call waiting - a common system in which a telephone conversation is interrupted by another call
without cutting off the first call
to be on hold - to wait for someone to return to your call without hanging up or being cut off
to fax - to send an exact copy of a picture or typed message by telephone

Hint 17 Know phrasal verbs and their meanings.
Phrasal verbs ("come in," "turn on," and so forth) are very common on all three parts of the listening
comprehension test. Remember that these two or three little words make ONE meaning. They often
do NOT appear together. Nouns or even clauses can separate them. Try to memorize the most
common phrasal verbs so that you will be prepared. (See list.)
Example:

Question Set 1

Question 1: [This story has six pictures in which a man buys gift for his grandmother, drops it while
getting into his car and later finds the gift intact when opened]

[The main points in the story making are - start with ‘One day’--- past tense everywhere (you can
make present tense everywhere but that won’t sound good when you talk over the phone to describe
a story)--- one interesting and one unwarranted situations --- relief]

One day a man went to a gift shop looking for a gift. He saw a vase in the gift shop and decided to buy it.
He paid for the gift with his credit card. He had the vase gift-wrapped and rushed towards his car. As he
was trying to get into his car, he accidentally dropped the gift package to the floor. He was worried about it;
however, he did not check whether the gift was intact or broken. He gave the gift to his grandmother. When
his grandmother opened it, she was delighted to see a beautiful vase. The man sighed with relief to see that
the vase was in good condition.

Question 2: If you were to give a gift to a friend or a relative which would you prefer, money or gift
certificate or a gift personally chosen by you? Explain why.

[I have tried to give at least one reason why I would like to choose between the two gift-giving
methods. I include a transitional sentence with disadvantage of first method to go into the second
method.]

For me, the choice of gift to my friend or relative depends on the person who is receiving the gift. For
someone who is very intimate or close to me, I prefer to give a gift especially chosen by myself. I also
choose this method when I give gift to someone whom I respect. Personally chosen gift gives a feel of
intimacy and invokes the remembrance of the person who gave the gift. However, if the person happened to
have no use of the gift or dislikes it, then it would be useless. On the other hand, gift certificate gives the
recipients their freedom of choice. They can use the gift certificate in buying things they need most and
value most at that time. I give gift certificates to my young relatives who live quite near to my place.

Question 3: Give the advantages of working in a challenging environment and working in a predictable,
routine environment. [This question does not ask about disadvantages?]

In this question only advantages of working in two conditions are given. The question does not ask
about disadvantages. I have explained one reason why people want to work in those working
environments. If you justify one reason for each condition very well you don’t need to give many
points. Always remember you can’t read a whole bible in 60 seconds. Don’t try to feed too much to
the rater. First point is career development opportunity in challenging environment and second point
is balance between family and work. Rest of the sentences are just explanations.

Some people like to work in a very challenging environment while others prefer to work in a predictable
and routine environment. Each has its own advantage. Working in challenging environment is
advantageous for hardworking, active and innovative people. Each day they face a new challenge and they
are encouraged to think for better ideas and working methods. It helps them succeed in their career.
However, working in a more predictable and routine environment is not bad either. It is best when you have
to balance your time between your work and your home. You will have less stress at work and you can give
more time to your family.
Question 4: What changes would you expect in your life if you became famous?

The logic in your answer is not relevant in this question. You can give any points. I have given two
positive gains from popularity, money and fan base, and a negative point that is a loss of personal
freedom or privacy.

Well, being famous is good, but popularity does not come without any costs. It will be an honor to me that
many people in this world know me. I will have more friends and followers. I will earn huge money from
my work and will be able to afford the facilities that I can only think of right now. For example, I might buy
luxurious cars, build a mansion and afford best education for my children or give more money to the
charities. However, being famous will put me among the list of public figures. I will lose my privacy that I
now enjoy.

Question 5: The real question asks to interpret the results from two pie charts which show the use of free
time of people in one state in 1999 and 2000. The following graph is an example with my own data

People Spending Their Free Time In Alabama 1990-2000

1990 2000

20% 15%
25% Reading Reading
35%
W atching Television W atching Television

Computer & Video Computer & Video

10% Games Games
35%
Sports
30% Sports

30%

Look at the highlighted words. You have to be specific about the trend. Choose right words to
describe the trend.

These pie charts show how people use their free time in the state of Alabama in 1990 and 2000. The first
chart shows the use of free time in 1990. In this chart, we can see that people spent 35% of their free time in
reading books followed by 30% in watching television and 25% in sports. Only 10% was in computer and
video games. However, how people spend their free time in 2000 changed from that of 1990. In 2000,
people spending their free time playing computer and video games increased dramatically to 30%. In the

to 35% and sports decreased by 5% from 25% to 20%.

Question 6: Do you think that playing video games for children will be beneficial for them? Explain why
or why not?
I have explained both positive and negative points.

Video games for children can have both good and bad results. If they are used wisely, they can be
beneficial for their growth and development. Playing carefully selected educational video games on the
computer or television sharpens their critical thinking. It helps them to solve mathematics and puzzles as
well as increase their word power. However, there are also some drawbacks of video games. This can be
very addictive to young children. They will be less active and spend less time in outdoor activities. It could
be harmful for their normal growth and development. In addition, action filled video games might
encourage the young children to be aggressive.

friend should visit there, for example “I know you are interested in …..”

Hello, Sarita! It's nice to see you all after a long vacation. My vacation last week was wonderful. It was so
refreshing and full of fun. I went to visit San Diego with my husband and daughters. We spend most of
our time in visiting historical old town. We visited the museums of very first school, old pottery collection,
an equestrian house, a public theatre, and famous house of a community leader of 18th century. While we
were there, a group of very young scouts unfurled the national flag in the pole. It was so amazing. This
visit was so educational for my daughters too. I know that you are interested in studying cultural
history of different communities. I am sure it can be a perfect place for your next vacation with your
family.

There are more advantages than disadvantages of increasing tourist in the city. If more tourists visit a city

hotels will earn more money and will employ more people. Tourists buy souvenirs when they return. This
will promote our handicrafts and local products. It will help in the national economy. However, there are

affect the people in that area?

Six months is too long for reconstructing a small segment of road. It would affect the people's life here. It

being of the people. The business would be down for a long time as many customers would like to avoid
this place.

6. How would you like to know the weather reports and why? (Which media would you prefer,
why?)
I prefer to get my weather report from the internet. It is very efficient, specific and up-to-date. We have
access to internet from home or office, even mobile and internet are available these days. I can log onto the
internet any time and read the weather report. I don’t have to rely on the program schedule to get weather
news on the internet. In opposite, we have to rely on pre-scheduled programs to listen to the report on radio
and television. While newspaper reports are updated only once the internet reports are updated as

of their students? Give reason whether do you agree with this view?
I do not agree with dealing teaching as a business where only way to assess and pay for teachers and
administrators is from the success of their students. A students learning experience is influenced by
many factors at school and at home. Students who have good environments in both of these places learn
more and succeed. However, I support giving extra incentive and awards to the teachers and
administrators who lead a successful group of students. It will encourage them to work harder and show
others an example.

Condominium Construction Schedule

1. Location is chosen
2. Land is purchased
3. Budget is approved
4. Architect’s plans are approved
5. Advertising begins
6. Construction begins
7. Construction is completed

You have 15 seconds to study above steps in process and you can continue to look at them (if you choose
to) while listening to the dialogue which you can only hear.

Mark: Has the new condominium project been started yet?

Jane: Well, a great location has been found overlooking the lake. Obviously, the units on that side of the
building will be significantly more expensive than those on the other side.

Mark: Has the land been purchased or did they decide that it was too expensive? The real estate in that
area is the most costly in the city.

Jane: Yes. They bought it right away. They considered themselves lucky to find something available that
had a large enough area, so the money was not an obstacle. They knew that their investment would
eventually pay off.

Mark: Well, I guess with their experience, they can come up with a realistic budget that they can stick to.

Jane: For sure. The budget has already been created and it was approved last week. They got one of the
best architects in the country for this job and I hear that he works very fast. We’re waiting for him to submit
his plans and I’m sure they’ll be approved within a month.

Mark: And as soon as the plans are approved they can start the advertising and sales campaign. It’s quite
common for people to buy, just from seeing illustrations of the property.

Jane: You’re right. I’ll bet we sell 5 units before construction begins in about two months. And I wouldn’t be
surprised if 90% of the units are sold by the time construction is completed in June of next year.

You must make a report to your supervisor, Mr. Green, stating what has been done, what the situation is
now, and what remains to be done. Past actions with specific time and/or date should use simple past
tense, past actions without specific time can be expressed with past perfect tense, current situation can be
stated with present continuous tense and future actions with simple future. Future can also be expressed
with "we hope to..., expect to...., plan to......". The passive voice is often a convenient method of describing
a process.

Answer: Good morning, Mr. Green. This is Ken Jones and I’d like to update you on the new condominium
construction schedule. The location, near the lake, has been selected and the land has been purchased.
We were very lucky to find such a large lot that was available. The budget, which we believe is very
realistic, has been approved but the architect’s plans have not. Right now we are waiting for these plans
which we expect will be approved by the end of the month. At that point the advertising will begin even
though construction will not start for another two months. The project is scheduled to be completed in June
of next year. I hope this report was satisfactory. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Second, it takes few seconds for the photographer to take your pictures so it saves your time and it is
not expensive as compared to the picture painted by photographer.

But on the other end, however, pictures are too exact so sometimes you don’t like it because you have
scar or pimple on your face. Not only that sometimes quality of your picture depend on the skill of
photographers as well as intensity of light.

Second, the quality of the picture doesn’t long last because its fades when time goes because it loose
color and brightness of your picture

So there are many advantages as well as disadvantages for both types of concepts.

9. Some people prefer to go out with friends or family for entertainment, such as shows or
movie. Other people prefer to entertain at home. What are the advantage and disadvantage
of both?
Ans: There are many advantages as well as many disadvantages for both types of entertainment.

First look at the concept of going out for the entertainment.

First of all, it’s a kind a social outing, there is lot more energy and excitement in the audience
surrounds you. Peoples are laughing and jumping and clapping. So all these cause you to remember
lot more than you watch in home.

Second, when you go outside you dress well, you go to different environment and that makes you
fresh. Not only that you might make new friend who also come to watch shows or movie.

But on the other end, however, it is expensive because you have to pay for tickets and parking. Not
only that quite often you have to stand in long line-up get your tickets so sometime it is inconvenient.
Second, sometimes its too crowded, too noisy and quite often you disturbed by other peoples. And you
have to stick to your sit or place so sometimes you become tired.

Adv & Disadv……

Now look at the concept of entertaining at home.

First of all, you have a common theatre and you are in comfort of your home. You are not restricted to
do only thing. You can do some other things while you are entertaining at home. If you don’t like it just
turned off, it’s not a waste of money.

Second, if you want to watch at another time, you can record the show and watch it over and over.

But on the other end, however, when you entertain at your home, quite often your home becomes very
dirty and messy because you cannot control kids. They spill the water and food on the carpet.

Second it makes you tired because when you call your friends at home, you clean your house and you
make the food for them. And once they leave, you have to clean the kitchen wares.

So there are many advantages as well as disadvantages for both types of concepts.

10. Some people buy a lot of used items especially furniture and house hold items other buy
new items. What are the advantage and disadvantage for both?
Ans: There are many advantages as well as disadvantages for buying both types of items.

First look at the concept of buying old items.

First of all, used items are almost at half price than new items and you can still bargain the price. Not
only that you don’t pay taxes for old items. So old items are much cheaper in prices.

Second, quite often old items are unique and more durable.

But on the other end, however, if you buy old items there is no guarantee, no user’s guide, and no
manual so it’s a risk. You don’t know how long it is going to last.

Second, if you break something, then you most probably won’t find the replacement parts.

Now look at concept of buying new items.

First of all, new items are with latest design and with latest version. Not only that it will be in excellent
working condition and most often you get warranty on that.

Adv & Disadv…

Second, its shiny, clean and no any dents and if you find any dents, then you can exchange or get
refunds.

But on the other end, however, you have to pay taxes for new items so they are very expensive. Not
only that many peoples may have same design of the items so it is not indifferent.
Second, some times new things come in a package that you really don’t want. For example dining
table. More often it comes with six chair but you want for four chairs only because it doesn’t fit on your
designated space.

So there are many advantage and disadvantage for both the types of items.

11. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having people from many different cultures
working together in work place?
Ans: There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of having people from many different
cultures working together in work place.

First of all, we have opportunities to learn about different culture, religion, and festivals. We can also
learn about different life styles, different skills that belong to different culture.

Not only that we learn to accept the differences. So what if some body is black or white? Christian or
Hindu.

But on the other end, however, First of all, I am not saying always but more often there is racial and
cultural discrimination.

Second, there are interaction gaps, conflict in ideas and thinking because of different habits and
different style in appearance, eating style and that kind of things.

So there are many advantages as well as many disadvantage of having peoples of different cultures
working together.

12. Some peoples prefer to drive to work alone in their own private cars while other people
prefer to carpool and with colleagues. What are the advantage and disadvantage for both?

Ans: There are many advantages as well as disadvantages for both types of concepts.

Look at first concept of going alone to work in own private car.

Adv & Disadv..

First of all, you are more flexible with your time schedule therefore; you are free to decide what time
you want to leave. Not only that, you are not restricted to the habits of somebody else.

Second, if you drive alone, you have more space in your car. So you can buy things on ways and you
can easily accommodate in the car.

But on the other end, however, you have to handle the expenses of fuel, car maintenance and that
kind of things.

And second, sometimes it’s lonely and boring on a long drive.

Now look at second concept of going to carpool and with colleagues.

First of all, you share the company and you share the conversation so you can easily pass your time.
And second you are doing something good for the environment, because it reduces the traffic so forth
you help to reduce air pollution.

But on the other end, however, you are restricted to other people’s schedule; other people’s habits so
you can’t do something that somebody don’t like it. For example, smoking.

Second, sometimes it’s too distracting while you are driving and you loose concentration on driving
because your concentration goes on more exciting or interesting subject easily while friends are
discussing.

So there are many advantages as well as many disadvantages for both types of concepts.

continued to cross the street. The man wearing a cap followed him, and it started to rain. Fortunately, the
man wearing a cap was able to catch the owner of the umbrella because the owner stopped by a
newsstand to buy a newspaper.
The man wearing a cap talked to the owner of the umbrella, told him what happened, and gave him back
the umbrella, and finally since then it was raining hard, the owner opened his umbrella and shared it with

In 1990, 20% of the comedy tickets were sold and 30% of the drama tickets were sold. Ten years later, the
comedy tickets sold increased by 10% while the drama tickets sold reduced by 10%. We can see that from
the graphs, people tend to prefer comedy to drama..

6. Many people think humorous comedy and TV shows are more enjoyable than other programs, agree or
not
7. Imagine one of the employee in you company has just been back after he has spent several years in

1. Pictures: A man (I mention him as myself in the test) was walking on the street. I was snowing. And he
saw a travel agency which displays the ad saying "SUNNY HOTEL TRAVEL". And I went into it. The
receptionist in the agency welcomed me and showed the details. I just decided to enjoy the sun shine in it.
After I reached the place, it was raining heavily and I saw the hotel very old. Its name is SUNNY HOTEL...
somewhat like that. And since it was raining heavily, I could only stay indoor and could not enjoy the sun
shine.
2. The question asked which is the place if you want to have a trip. Tell the place and explain why this

2) Some people give more importance to work than relaxation, while others give equal importance to both.
What do u think about this? What could you do for relaxation? (I doubt whether this last sentence was
there..I don’t remember.)

Note: it’s always good to give examples if there is any possibility.

3) If everything that u planned for the future was achieved successfully, how do u find urself in the future.

Note: It’s about ur overall position in the future: professional, domestic, satisfaction etc.

4) These days, science, technology, and medicine are developing at a very fast rate. How can one keep
pace with the rapid developments in technology?
What is the best way to learn new technology? (I m again very doubtful, whether the last sentence was
present, as it could give rise to an entirely different kind of answer)

Note: possible ways are: 1) learning and higher education 2) newspapers 3) TV 4) Internet 5) Discussing
with friends

Answer sample--Centurion

i will try to recollect my answers as accurately as possible. (there may be a few changes also)
1) Picture story: Last evening Bob was working at his office. He was so engrossed in his work that
although he pinned a reminder at his notice board, he forgot that he had to meet his wife outside the
theatre at 8:00 pm. Suddenly at 5 mins to 8, he looked up at his clock and realized his mistake. He rushed
out of his office with the tickets. At the theatre entrance he found his wife very angry. The show had
started, so the usherer had to find them their seats. As Bob was very tired, he fell asleep as soon as he
took his seat and started snoring. The people around him were getting angry and his wife was
embarrassed

2) Some people prefer to work all the time while others prefer to strike a balance between work and
relaxation. In my opinion, one should give equal importance to work and relaxation. There are many
advantages to this approach. We need to work since we have to earn and support ourselves as well as our
family members. At the same time, relaxation is very important both for our physical and mental well-being.
If we relax, we can perform better at work. I always believe in working for half the time and relaxing for the
other half of my time. For relaxation, i participate in sports. I also practice yoga which is an Indian form of
exercise and meditation.

3) Technology today is developing at a very rapid rate. In order to understand various developments in
Medicine, Science etc, we have to keep ourselves up-to-date. For this reason, we have to take a number
of measures. The best way to keep ourselves abreast with latest developments is by reading newspapers.
Newspapers allow us to know a lot of things in a very less time.
Another medium of information is the Television. TV lets us know various happenings across the globe.
The internet is also a major source of information. Another good way to know more is by exchanging ideas
and discussing with friends.

4) If everything that i planned for happened in the next 10 years (or is it 5?), i would be a successful
software professional. On my career front, i would have completed my masters and worked for a few years
as a s/w developer. As i am interested in management areas, i would have pursued a MBA degree and
would be the manager of a top IT firm. On my personal front, i would own a big mansion and a car. I would
be married to a beautiful Indian girl and would have two kids. In conclusion, if all that i plan for the next 10
yrs happens, i would be a very successful and satisfied person both on the career and personal fronts.

5) GRAPH Q: i described the graph as advised in papajohn. I couldn’t finish on time but i had explained
one increase and one decrease.
1) write ur graph doubts My answer in the TSE went something like this:

(this is also a part of a template)

The graph given to us shows a comparison b/w ...... (title of graph). On the horizontal axis we
see...The vertical axis shows....... For any given year we can find the comparison/difference in the
no. of cycles and motorcycles.... For e.g. in 1970 (some given yr in the graph) the no. of cycles sold
were .... and the no. of motorcycles sold were....

We can observe that the more/less cycles were sold as compared to ........(also the comparison part
with two example years). ...."

As i was describing the last year my time was up.

6) Advantages of bicycles over motorbikes:

Some people prefer using bicycles while others prefer motorbikes. The use of bicycles has certain adv.
over motorbikes.......................
The main points i discussed are 1) cost aspect in terms of maintenance
2) no need of fuel 3) good exercise.
and finally summed up saying that if we don’t have any time constraints the bicycle is the best mode of
transport.

7) talk with colleague about a few days of leave. I imagined myself in the shoes of a person shifting house
and described the details of shifting. (In fact i recently shifted my house for better facilities...so it was very
easy)
Reasons for shifting: 1) 24 hrs water supply
2) good maintenance facilities
3) close to workplace
4) and a few others...nearby malls, children’s park etc.

8) A man forgets his keys inside and the car is locked. The main points I dealt with were:
1) express sympathies for the man.
2) send the best locksmith available ASAP.
3) the name and identification of the locksmith
4) contacts for further assistance.

The pattern is same as given in papajohn

2) The locksmith question:

Hello Mr. Bob, I am John Smith, senior technician at -------- (Name of the company). I am very sorry to
know that u locked up ur car with the keys inside. I am going to send my most experienced worker Mr.
Wills immediately to open ur car. Our workers have a blue uniform and have a badge on their chest (i
couldn’t find a better word in the TSE!!!!). Mr. Wills will meet u at the entrance of the parking lot in about 15
minutes from now. I am sure ur problem will be solved as Mr. Wills is the best locksmith in the city. If u
have any further questions or need any assistance please call our customer centre at 111-111-1111.
Thank you.
(I said a point or two more but am not able to recollect it now!)

Hope this helps.

9) Flowchart:
i explained each of the arrangements made and an associated detail for the arrangement. Could not finish
on time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
TIPS:

1) papajohn is enough for the Q types that i cover.

2) We can prepare templates for answering opinion questions. e.g. first line-intro. Second line-there are
both adv & disadv....Next 3 lines-adv (2 points). Next 3 lines-Disadv(2 points), finally sum up.

3) For speaking to colleagues or phone conversations also we can prepare templates:

Hello Mr. John ...this is....
We are sorry/happy.....
[reasons/explanations]
[solution]
[concession/free offer/discounts]
[further assistance/contact]
[regret again]
thank u...bye

4) for graph. the answers in papajohn give a good idea.

3. Is it better to stay working for one employer or university for promotion or frequently change
your employer, which do you prefer?
Some people prefer to stay working for one employer and others change their employer frequently. I prefer
to work for one employer or university bcoz when u work longer, more people will know you, they will
recognize your achievements and help. You will get promotion also as the management knows u for a long
time. The people in the workplace are known and stayed in that city for long time so feels settled.
However, if you change employer frequently, you will see new people and it takes time initially to adjust in
new workplace—also moving expenses—no reputation—no promotion

TSE dec 10th questions 2004

hi friends

here are some of the questions from dec 10th TSE......

1) picture story:
a man parks a car in front of a building at 9 am. There is a clock (which is shown in first 5 pics). he walks in
to his office and goes on with his routine work. at 3 pm he hands over some papers to his assistant (a
lady). At around 5 am he comes out of the building and goes towards his car. while he is still walking a van
loses control and bangs into his car disfiguring it completely. To make matter worse a policeman gives him
a ticket for parking in front of the building. (time shown here is 5.30 pm). Then last picture shows that the
man goes to a used car sale and purchases another car.

2) second question was regarding advantages and disadvantages of having your own car? In other words
what if everyone has his/ her own car? give the advantages and disadvantages.

3) graph: the graph was a comparison between number of hours of sleep on x- axis and different age
groups like 1-2 yrs, 4-6 yrs, 12-14 yrs, an adult.
it was a bar graph (divided one) showing minimum and maximum number of hrs required for each grp.
i had to explain the graph in 60 sec.

4) it was an opinion-based question which is as follows: what is your opinion about working long hours and
getting little sleep. tell me whether you agree with this concept or not? give reasons.

5) imagine that your colleague (Mr. x) is leaving the job and going back to his native country. you happen
to overhear this from someone and you talk to another colleague at work and remind him about the
contributions of Mr. towards the company. also convince him that something special should be done for
Mr. before sending him off.

6) a customer calls your customer service dept. (company name - buy tech). she is really upset about the
new computer she bought. it has some problem and she called several times the technical support for
help. every time she called they asked for her contract # so that they can help her. she doesn't have it with
her and is really upset about the fact that nobody called back from customer care.

you have to leave her a voice message....

1) empathize with her.
2) give her some solution
3) apologize to her.

7) flowchart

topic: NEP conference...........national educational product conference.

your company is going to participate in it and here is the flowchart ....
funding approval ----> presenter selection ----> presentation ----> hotel accommodations

you overhear a conversation between 2 employees: (I’ll just give the summary)
A man named Don, who is supposed to arrange for the conference, is talking to one of his colleague. he
tells his colleague that funding has been finalised. he had sent in an e-mail stating the requirement for
presenters. A lot of employees responded and he is yet to finalize the presenters. the presentation was
ready and the hotel accommodations were ready. all the rooms were good. he hoped that in a week he'll
finalize the presenters and will be all set for the conference.

i was supposed to leave a vice mail for my supervisor Mr. David young giving him a brief report about:

what was the situation?

what remained to be done?
what all was achieved?

-advantage/disadvantage of self employed vs. working for someone

The remaining question was whether we thought that the books and newspapers would eventually
disappear and there would be only Internet left.

16. Bar Graph

Ans: This graph compares the population in the city to the population in the country from 1990 to 2000.

The population of the country has increased dramatically from 20 million to 35 million. The population in
the city was 10 million in 1990 but remained constant from 1995 to 2000, just under 5 million
In conclusion we can learn that in the future, more and more people will prefer to live in countryside.

17. Simple Bar Graph

Ans: In this graph we are given statistics on the percentage of people employed from 1990 to 2000. This
graph tells us that in 1990, 80% of people were employed. Then after five years 60% of people were
employed and after 10 years of 1990 only 40% of people were employed. So last 10 years almost 50 %
of people lost their job as compared to year 1990.

So we can learn form graph that more & more people will be unemployed in future due to negative
impact of advanced technology in most of field, because most of them are full automatic.

18. Population with computer.

Ans: This graph tells us how many millions of people have computers in five different years starting at
1900 to projected year 2005. Between the 1900 to 1940, only 40 million of people had computers but in
1960, 80 million and in 1980 of about 110 million had computer and it is expected that of about 130
million people will have computers in the year 2005. So there is sharp increase in the no. of people
having computer from 1940 to 2005.

So we can learn from this graph as technology is improved and the internet becomes even more useful,
and computers become less expensive. More people use computers now a day.

This is the second set of questions and answers. You should be prepared to change anything in the
answer during the test.

Question 1:
One day a couple went to a flea (or outdoor) market. They bought some old stuff at one stall. When
they reached home, they found that a lamp was not good. They returned to the stall and asked for a
refund. The merchant said he had a no refund policy. However, after some arguments the couple got
their money back.

Question 2: Make your opinion about people are too interested in buying clothes, computers etc.
It’s amazing that some people are too interested in shopping. For example, some of my friends like to
buy clothes every time they go to the mall. They will buy anything when it is on sale for half the
marked price. It will add variety on their closet however I doubt they ever use all of the clothes they
buy. Instead, I prefer to buy minimum set of fine clothes that I can use regularly than hanging them
in the closet with the price tag still on.

Question 3: The following graphs show the percentage of students in 1998 and 2000.
(This is the sample answer)
This set of two pie charts shows the distribution of students whether they chose higher education or
not in 1998 and 2000. In 1998, 20% of the students did not complete high school. 40% students went
to university after completing high school whereas the same percentage of students stopped their
education after high school. The pattern changed in 2000. 90% of the students completed their high
school. The percentage of students that went to university increased to 50%.

Question 4: Complaint about delay of house moving services. Call them back because you are customer
service representative.
I can’t answer with this much information. Just delay of house moving services does not make sense to me.
It could be any situation.

Question 5: Your friend told you that he wants to do some advanced courses after work. Give your
suggestion. Mention how this will help him with current job and how this will help him with his future
career.
Hi Jack. I like your idea of doing advance courses in computing and programming after work. I
always wanted to do similar courses but couldn’t get time before. I guess your advance course in
computing will help your database management job. Programming knowledge is a hot cake these
days. I am sure you will get better job offers in the near future. Good luck man. See you around.

Question 6: Progress report about employees to go to participate in a conference.

Hello, Bob! This is Tanya. I am giving you a brief report on the progress of arrangement for
conference participation. I have already arranged the trip to ______. Hotel has been booked for all
participants. However, the conference schedule has not been made yet. It will be made soon. We will
have some pre-meeting seminar included in the program.

Question 7: Some students think that their parents sould participate in making curriculum for the school
where their children study. The other students think that this must be done by the professionals only.
Should parents help or not?
I think parents should be involved in making curriculum for the school where their children study.
Parents know their children’s problems and potential better than any other people. It helps the
school officials to make specific plans to incorporate different social, cultural and educational issues
the children have to live with at home and at school. Professionals can get direct feedback from the
parents and incorporate them into the school’s lesson plans. Therefore, I suggest an interaction of
parents and professional in developing school curriculum.

Question 8: Compare the advantages of working all day at the permanent place and working moving to
different places every day.
Many people like to work in permanent place of work while many others prefer a change of working
place every day. Working in a permanent place is more routine and easy. It helps to plan your time
for other activities in your daily life. On the other hand, working in different places everyday is more
challenging. You face some difficulty of transportation and time planning because of transient nature
of job, however, such type of jobs pay very well and you can earn more money in a short period of
time.

Question 9: What do you think would have been different in you now if you had grown up in a different
country?
Certainly it would be different if I had grown up in a country other than my home country. The
major difference would be the level of education. We have less access to schools and colleges than it is
here in the USA. I would be doing my masters or Ph.D. degree rather than terminating my studies
with a bachelor’s degree.

Question 1: This question is about six pictures

One day a man looked at his notebook about the appointments for the day. He had a luncheon
meeting with his colleague at the Diamond hotel. He went to the hotel and found that it was closed for
repair. In the mean time his colleague arrived at the hotel. Both of them looked at the closed for
repair sign and went to a different coffee shop. In the coffee shop the man lost his balance and
bumped with another person. The man was so much ashamed.

Question 2: What is your opinion about doing several things at a time?

I have argued that my idea is different from others. I have given at least one bad point of doing
several things at a time and the remedy by doing one task at a time.

Some people believe that doing several things at a time is efficiency. However, I don’t believe in this.
Doing several things at a time is less efficient way to work. You will loose focus on all works. You can be
“jack of all trades but master of none.” Therefore, I want to focus on one subject at a time and finish the
task very well. That way I can proceed to the second task after successfully completing the first task.

Question 3: What is your favorite time of the year? [This question is not in TSE format]
Here, you will have to justify why that particular time of the year is favorite to you.

My favorite time of the year is autumn. We have several festivals, including the two major national
festivals during that time. The weather is nice – not so cold and not so hot. We will have just got rid of
the mud of the rainy season and winter is not coming yet. The green grasses and yellow crops make the
landscape very beautiful.

Question 4: How will you spend your vacation? [This question is not quite to the TSE format]

I like to spend my every other vacation in a new place. Whenever, I take a vacation, I go to a new place
with my family. While on vacation I prefer to go the historic places and natural preserves. My daughters are
at school. They will learn many things from such a visit to a museum or a zoo. Being a part of nature and
history is quite refreshing to me.

Question 5: Bar graph with percentage of people living in park city and surrounding areas
This question does not make any sense. Just look at the possible two bar graphs. There must be some
distinct increase and decrease on the figures. Just point out the major changes – such as dramatic
increase, sharp decline etc.

Question 6: Where do you prefer to live, in big city or in surrounding areas?

Give your own opinion (for example you like surrounding areas). Tell one or two things you don’t
like in big cities and then one or two things you like in surrounding areas.
I like to live in the periphery of a city than living in the big city itself. These days, cities are being so
much crowded. There is traffic congestion and air pollution in every big city. On top of that living costs
are high in big cities. While suburban areas have almost every facility we can find in a big city, they are
cleaner, less congested, and safe. Living cost is lower in these areas. Therefore, I always want to live a
little far from the crowded big cities.

Question 7: Tell your colleague about the company’s plan for one of the colleague’s retirement party. You
should include what the plan is, how you feel, and how the company will fill the position.

Hi, Maria! We have a party in honor of Mr. Tony this afternoon. Mr. Tony has decided to retire from his
post of program manager after twenty years service to this company. I feel very sad that he is living. We
started to work together for this company back in 1985. He was instrumental in bringing several good
changes to this company over time. The management has decided that there will be review of in-house
candidates for this vacant position and the best among us will be given the new responsibility.

Question 8: You are the customer representative. A man called and said that his order did not arrive. He
ordered a camera from the company website one month ago. His credit card has already been charged.

Hello Mr. Bob! My name is Maria. I am customer service representative from “Camera Graphic” company.
I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you because of some technical problem about your order. I
looked at the system and found that your order was received on April 16th. I have processed your order and
I am shipping it via overnight express in your given address. I am including an extra set of films and a 10%
off coupon towards your next purchase that will be valid for next six months. Once again I apologize for the
inconvenience. Please give me a call if you have any further questions. Thank you and have a good day.

Question 9: Moving books from one place to another place

This answer has to match with the question. Listen to the question carefully and then decide what to
do

Hello, Ron! This is Bob. I am giving you a brief report on the progress about moving our bookstore. We
finished taking inventory of the books. Now we are packing the books into boxes. We will finish packing
before the supervisor arrives.

2003 November 15 questions:

1. Story telling about a man who was reading a cowboy book, fell asleep while reading the book,
telephone rang which woke him up.

2. If you move from a different place with a different climate, how would it change your life.
Well, initially it will affect significantly my life because I need to get accustomed to the new climate. I
need to buy new clothes to suit new environment. We will meet new people of different culture and
tradition and it will take some time to adjust in that new environment.

3. If you were to take a different job, what would it be and why?

As I am a pharmacist, I am interested in learning about new drugs, diseases, diagnosis, and
treatment, so I were to take a different job, I will go in the field of medical transcription. This field is
related to doing medical records in which we come across new drugs, how the disease was diagnosed
by doctor, which drugs patient is currently taking and how the progress is made. In addition to
medical terms, I can also learn about computer software used to protect the privacy of the patient,

TSE (Test of March 5, 2004)

Usual warm-up questions.

1. Picture story.

A girl looked out the window.

Her parents were playing catch ball outside, in the yard. It was a nice, sunny day.
After the girl’s parents came back into the house, they grabbed a mop and a bucket and were about
to clean the inside of the house, but she asked her parents if she could play ball with them.
So they all went out again to play catch.
Suddenly, it started raining and there was no way the could continue to play.
They came back into the house but their shoes were very dirty and when they stepped into the
kitchen, they dirtied the kitchen floor.
So, she and her Dad had to mop up the kitchen floor to have it clean again.

2. Some people believe that in future households, electric machine will do all the cleaning. Would
having electrically powered machines to do all the housework be an advantage or disadvantage? Most
people now would think it would be an advantage. How do you respond to this idea?

3. Some people shop in department stores and some people shop in specialty shops. Which do you
prefer, and why?

4. Some people are willing to stay after work and put in extra work hours for their job. Other workers
leave on time. What is your preference?

5. Graph
Exercise program in centre village
People who started to do exercise in 2000 and continue in 2002.

6. Some companies offer their employees an exercise program at lunchtime (During the lunchtime
hour). What is the advantage or disadvantage of this program. (Is there a benefit?) Give specific
reasons why you are for or against having a lunch hour exercise program.

7. One of your colleagues hopes to attend some advanced lectures after work. Would you encourage
him/her to do so? Give some reasons to support the advice you would give to your colleague.

8. Role play. You are the manager of Daly Candy company, a company which delivers chocolates and
candies to its customers. When you arrived at your office earlier, you realized you had received a
voice-mail message.

The message is: A man who is a regular customer ordered a gift of chocolates from Daly Candy to
send to his relatives. However, when he visited their house he learned that they had not yet received
the chocolates, and he was very upset. He therefore called the company and left a voice message. He
asked what the company can do for him.
What is the situation
Respond to the customer and tell him how you will solve this problem.

9. A flow chart informs you of the preparation for a job fair to be held by a company searching for new
employees. The Flow Char provided lists the responsibilities of the manager who is responsible for the
job fair, with the help of her staff.

The responsibilities of manager and staff are;

l To researve a date and place for the job fair.
l Contact companies who will provide set-up and take-down of furnishings.
l To place advertisements (Publish advertisements in local papers) so interested public (job seekers)
can respond
l Request students to submit their resumes
l Hold the job fair

(some of these duties have been accomplished; there are remaining duties to fulfil)

Mrs. Lee is Daniel’s manager. She was away from the office so she telephoned him to ask how the
project was proceeding. Daniel explained what he had done-decorating and preparation for the job
fair. He had already booked the student centre for the following week. Mrs. Lee thought the project
was behind schedule. In terms of contact company, Daniel reported that a lot of companies did
contact them. As for advertisement, he placed less advertisement than what his manager had
expected; therefore, he should place more. Other things have been done well.

Explain What is the situation?

What has been done?
What remains to be done?

I had mine today (May 15th, Shoreline, WA) and would like to share the questions I got:
I try to repeat them as close as possible:

1) Picture cartoon:
Man sleeps, alarm rings 7 am, turns alarm off (pic 1)
Phone rings, man wakes up, it is 8 am (pic 2)
Gets dressed, runs out of the house (pic 3)
Tries to catch the bus (pic 4)
At work, boss is angry, it is 10 am (pic 5)
Next morning, he wakes up aurrounded by 5 alarm clocks (pic 6)

the collegues "relationship" (they formulated it different..) ?

- ask him for help

8) You are responsible to organize business meetings in a hotel. A customers booked a room for a
meeting. He now claims, after inspecting the room, that their are only chairs in the room. When he
booked the room, he made it very clear, that he needs tables to write on and so on and so on....It is
7.30 am, the meeting starts at 8.30 am, please reply to the customer asap and leave him a voicemail
in his room.
9) You have to organize a picnic:
There is a list what has to be done:
Choose a location
expected costs
choose food
plan activities
organize transportation

2 colleagues talk about the upcoming picnic.

So far, the location is chosen, the budget got proved, the transportation is organized.
What still needs to be done: Figure out what kind of food you wanna order and which activities you
are planning.

Call your boss and tell him the situation.

him and continued to cross the street. The man wearing a cap followed him, and it started to rain.
Fortunately, The man wearing a cap was able to catch the owner of the umbrella because the owner
stopped by a newsstand to buy a newspaper.
The man wearing a cap talked to the owner of the umbrella, told him what happened and gave him
back the umbrella. and finally since the it was raining hard, the owner opened his umbrella and shared
it with the man wearing a cap... etc..

(this was my interpretation of the story, but then, I was not able to complete the story. I think I was

Q.1 On Saturday night, Mary and her son, Bill, went to see a live performance together. They gave
two tickets to the usher. Then, the usher took them to find seats somewhere in the middle. After that,
they enjoyed the shows together when the shows started. After a while, another man came and took
the seat in front of Bill. Bill complained to his mother that he could not see the shows because that
man blocked his view. So, his mom folded her coat and put it as a cushion on his seat so he could see
the shows. Then, they enjoyed watching the show again.

Q.2 What are the advantages of seeing a live performance?

vegetables in two different years. The horizontal axis shows the years. The vertical axis shows the
percentages of population in Sullivan who purchased food. The black areas represent the canned food.
The grey areas represent fresh food and the other represents the frozen food. In years 1990, 38% of
populations bought canned fruit and vegetables, 18% bought fresh food, and 26% purchased frozen

TSE : GRAPH EXPLANATIONS

1. Resolution graph :

Ans: This single line graph represent the amount of time most people stay committed to their new year
resolutions. Now lets look at the significant information in the graph.. Its survey for 100 peoples. And
out of 100 peoples, after 10 day almost all people, After 1 month, only 1/3 of the people and after 2
month only 1/5 of people stay committed to their new year resolution..

So from this graph we can see that upto 1 month, there is very sharp decrease and And after 1 month
there is steady decrease in the no. of people who stay committed to their new years resolution.
In conclusion of this graph, we can learn that people break their new years resolutions very quickly and
its very difficult to maintain for a long period of time.

2. What do you think this happens ? ( people don’t stick to their new years resolution ).

Ans: There are various reason to break new years resolution very quickly.

First of all, Quite often new years resolution involve the breaking a life time of phycological
habbits.Sometimes this habbits are so fixed, that people are addicted and dependent. And habbits and
dependency are very hard to break without support.

Second, lot of peoples lack power and motivation.

Finally, these time of the year is a period of huge depression because after the period of x’mas, lot of
bills are coming that people have to pay. Not only that, after xmas there is a winter, so quite often
peoples are affected by seasonal affective disorders.

So I believe because of these reasons, people break their new year resolution quickly and hard to
maintain for a long period of time.

2. Graph: Employment by industry, 1995-2005

Ans : This bar graph compared employment in five different fields starting from 1995 to projected year
2005.

Now look at the significant information in the graph.

In 1990, The employment of registered nurses were the highest followed by teachers, farmers, lawyers
and computer programmers were the lowest.

By projected year 2005, it is expected that employment in all field will still increase except farming.
There will be decrease in employment in field of farming and there will be large no. of people will be
employed in the field of computer programming as compared to 1990.

So in conclusion, we can learn that by projected years 2005 there will be an increase in the employment
in all fields expect farmers as compared to year 1990.

3. What do you think might be some the reasons for the changes represented in the graph
above?

Ans: There are some reasons for the increase in the employment in all field and decrease in employment
in the field of farming.

First of all, Over many years we will have large no. of population in our country due to new
immigration system. So we will need more nurses, teachers, lawyer and computer programmers for
certain activities to fulfill their demand.
Secondly, due to contuning development. most of our industries will run through advance technology
and it will be based on computer system..So we will need large no. number of people in computer
programming.

Finally, due to lot of environemental changes like air and water pollution, due to serious outbreak of
diseases like mad cow diseases. Farmers afraid to invest in cows and grow in poisonous envornment. So
they are moving to other field.

So because of these reasons, There will be increase in employment in all field except in the field of
farming.

4. Graph: Natural gas usage

Ans: This graph shows the natural gas used by the families in cubic feet from 1996 to 1998 for the first
six month of the year.

First of all in 1996, there was steady decrese in the usage of natural gas over the fist six month of the
period.

And in 1998, there was also steady decrease in the uasage of natural gas for the same period except in
the month of march, usage was slightly increased.

Natural gas usage was always lower in 1998 as compared to 1996 except for the month of march and
april where uasage was slightly increased.

So in conclusion, we can say that over the period of time, peoples are becoming more smart to save the
energy.
5. What do you think the family can do to reduce their gas usage ?

Ans: family can reduce their gas usage by many different ways.

First of all, we are in cold countries and we use the gas mainly for heating our homes. we lose 35% of
heat through cracks and holes. So we can reduce gas usage sealing the cracks, holes and keeping our
homes well insulated.

Second, if we keep gas device well maintained like clean the filter regularly, keep the temperature of
device even base and set it for auto off when there is enough heat. We can reduce the gas usage.

And finally,

6. Graph: Source of information used by travellars

Ans: This graph shows that how the two age group , younger group between the age of 20-40 and the
older group between the age of 40-60 get the information to travel.
So first of all, look at the younger group, about half of them ask the friends and family members. About
5th of them use travel books, another 5th of them check computer to get information but only 10th of them
see travel agent to get travel information.

When we look at the older group, almost half of them use travel agent followed by 1/3 of them use
travel books, then 1/5 of them ask friends and family memers and only about 1/10 of the peoples check
computers to get their information.

In conclusion, we can say that the source of information used by each group quite often rely on their
age.

7. Where do you prefer to go for your travel information and why ?

Ans: I always ask my friends and family member if I need any travel information. There are several
reasons.

First of all, its reliable and trust worthy because they have been there. They know what I like, they
know what I can afford. And they are telling something from experience.

Second I don’t like get anything on computer because I always worry about my credit card information.

Finally i don’t worry travel agent because who book something I don’t want and its expensive because
they are on commission.

So I always prefer to ask family and friends for travel information.

8. Graph: Shopping habbits by sales percentage, 1998 and 2002

Ans: This graph shows shopping habbits of people by sales percentage in two different year 1998 and
2002

First look at 1998, majory of total sales occurred through in-store shopping which represented of about
more than half. The proportion of internet shopping was about 1/5 of total followed by mail-order then
other forms of shoppings. But the biggest sales occurred through in-store shopping.

By year 2002, in store shopping still represented the highest form of shopping but the proportion is
decreased. The proportion of internet sales has gone double. And the proportion of sale through mail
order and other form has slightly decreased.

So we see than the shopping habbits has changed and more more sales occurring through internet.

9. what kind of effect will internet shopping have on your country ?

Ans: when you open up your country to internet, you will have the all the sudden national security,
financial security, and banking informations are in risk because of hackers. Not only that through
internet you open up your country to sex and violence. Because lot of pornography is on the internet.
But when you open internet shopping, you will be in a position to advertise and sale your country’s
product to different countries. Not only that streets will be less crowded and you save money building
huge shopping mall.\

So there are both positive as well as negative impact through internet shopping.

10. what kind of effect will internet shopping have on your company ?

Ans: positive effect: Less employee, less stores, less advertising and marketing expenses

Negative : security of your company,

11. Graph: Time spent at various activities for employees in us company.

Ans: This graph breaks down the time that peoples in the u.s company spend for different activities at
work

In u.s company, almost half of time spent by the people is for business, followed by 1/3 of the time
using phones and internet and and only 1/5 of the time for meetings

Now when we look at phone and internet time, almost half of the that time of about 15% of total phone
and internet time is used for person use. And more than half of total, of about 20% of total phone and
internet time is used for business.

In conclusion, we can say that peoples are diverted to misuse of the companys phone and internet.

12. Do you think companies should allow worker to spend their work time and use work
computers to do personal communication and internet serching ?

Ans: in my opinion, companies shouldn’t allow employees to spend their time and shouldn’t allow the
use of computers for personal communication and internet serching. There are several reasons.

First of all, if the people spend 15% of total time in personal use, then it will be loss of time and loss of
productivity and definitely it would cause a loss of company.

Second, even you spend small proportion of time for personal use and check you email or message in
the morning. It might draw your attention more to your personal thing even rather than your for the rest
of the day. So you can’t concentrate on your precisely.

And finally, it’s the risk of your company’s privacy and security because of hacking activities.

13. Graph: Cell phones and Drunk driving hazards

Ans: This graph comapares the % of people injured in crash that was either caused by while using cell
phones or while drunk driving from 1996 to 1999.

first of all, in 1996 the % of peoples injured due to cell phones and drunk driving was almost equal,
amost half of total. But the % people injured due to cell phones was slighty droped from about 50% to
40% from 1996 to 1997 and then after 1997 it was very slow gradual increase in % of injured people
returned to normal till 1999. so in 1999 there was almost same % of peoples were injured as in 1996
due to cell phones.

But due to cell phones, from 1996 to 1998 there was very steady, gradual increase in % of injured
people and then after 1998 there was a sharp increase in % of injured people so by 1999 almost 70% of
peoples were injured while using cell phones and we had only 50% of people injured while they were
drunk and driving.

So, in conclusion we can say that cell phones are much more dangerous than drunk driving.

14. what do you think the reason why drunk driving is less hazardous than cell phones ?

Ans: drunk driving is less hazardous than cell phones because of several reasons.

First of all, cell phone is legal, so you can use and drive but drunk driving is not legal. Peoles afraid
driving while they drunk because of police, laws, rules and regulation so not everybody is drunk while
they are driving.

Second, when people use cell phones their concentration get diverted from traffic, from road because it
goes to the phone, go to conversation.

Third, sometimes in rushhours traffics, its very difficult to handle stearing and drive the car using only
one hand because your other hand is busy with the cell phone.

So there are many many reasons that drunk driving is less hazardous than cell phones.

15. Do you agree or disagree that the cell phones should be banned while driving ?

Ans : in my opinion, I definitely believe that the cell phones should be banned while driving.

First of all, When you use cell phones, you loose your attention from road and traffics surrounds you.
Physically, you become distracted because your eye in on the phone and your finger is on key pad for
dialing the numbers.. So its very difficult to concentrate on road while you are using cell phones.

Second, sometimes you receives call that is very disturbing, and you become frustrated so it will
phsycologically and mentally disturb your driving.

So because of these reasons I believe that cell phones should be banned during driving.

16. Graph: Expenses for student A and student B

Ans : These two graphs represents the expenses for student A and student B for various things like
housing, food , tution/books, entertainment and some other expenses.

Now look the expenses for student A, majority of expense for student a is in tution or books, which
represent amost 1/3 of the total proportion, followed by ¼ in housing, 1/5 in food, 1/10 in travel, less
than 1/10th in entertainment and only a 1/30 of in some other things.
Now, the expense for students b is slightly lower than student a for tution/books , housing and food. But
expense of student b is higher than student a in entertainment, travel and some otherthing. We see the
major difference in expense for enteratainment and some other activities that the student b spend double
money than student a and amost three times more money in some other things.

17. how student can decrease those expenses ?

Most of the expenses for the student is in housing, food and tution/books. So they should use this things
wisely so they can decrease their expenses.

First of all, student can decrease their expenses if they share housing. Staying two or three friends
together in same house. So student decrease the expense by one half or one third.

Second, if you student use library to read books rather than buying the books, they can save a lot of
money because now a days books especially for the university is highly expensive.

Third, student can save money if they cook and eat home rather than going outside to the restaurants.
Not only that buy a food stuff from various diff places where you find promotions, offers and
reasonable prices.

So student can decrease their expenses using various different ways.

18. Graph: Age of Centerville Residents.

Ans: This graph represent the comparision in no of peoples of Centerville in five different age group
population in two different years in 1975 and 1995.

First of all, in 1995, the majory of peoples in centreville were between the age of 41-60 followed by
age group of 61-80, then age group of 21-40, then age group of 81-100 and very little peoples were
between the age group of 1-20.

Now look, in 1995, no. of peoples in age group were higher in small proportion as compared to 1975
except the age group of 1-20. there were little lower than in 1975.

So in conclusion, we can say that in Centerville, there are more rapid aging population.

19. what do you think will be the the impact of this information in the next 20 years ?

Ans: in my opinion, I think the first impact will be on the workforces. Because if we have a rapid aging
population, over a years , those people will retired and we will lose only the professional but lot of skills
because we have only few younger peoples who replace the older poples.

Second impact will be on the economy of our country. Because people who retires will be dependent on
pension, government’s healthcare and old age security but only small proportion of people will be
paying the taxes so in our country we will have less people who pays and more peoples who are
dependent on the governments. It will directly affect the economy of our country.

but on the other end, those industries will dispose their waste material and So forth there will more
pollutions in our city.

Secondly, People will have lot of facilities such as Sub-ways, buses to reach their destinations very
easily. We will have lot of facility of fast food stores and restaurants to eat readymade food. But you

Tse: Que & Ans… SHREE: 3

First of all, when we watch violence in the TV or Media. Quite often we become excited and we cheer
up. In another word we give the positive attendance toward violence and our children always learn what
they see.

And secondly, when TV and media show the violence, quite often they don’t show the consequences

dangerous things.
Because of these reasons, I strongly believe that violence on TV and in the media increase the violence
in our society.

and watch such a long movie or sport. Not only that, in most of movies now a days what you find? Sex,
violence and that kind of things? And that is too disturbing for me.

Secondly, I like news because it takes only 30 minutes and I can know what is going on around the

several exams and it takes on average couple years so I was highly frustrated because at the first point I
have to work in any field for the survival of my family and at the same time, I have to study hard to get
into my professional field.

Secondly, when I was trying to get a job, most of employers were asking for my work experience in

the child. What do you think? Should parents become involved and why?

reasons.
Que & Ans SHREE: 4

Fist of all, in any case or any place, if you support your child, your child will know that dad cares and
your child become inspired and motivated.

Secondly, your child understand you better than any body else, So if you put efforts, you child will
easily learn lot of other valuable skill like organization of time and punctuality in time, communication,
discipline, rules and regulations. And I believe these kinds of skill will have positive impact on your
child’s education.
Third most important things, you know your child since born so you know almost everything about
his/her behavior, thinking, ideas and that kind of things so if you share those things with his/her teacher,

they will have some physical activity. Not only that rural areas have least pollution so all these kinds of

Secondly, now a day to raise a family in comfortable environment, both men and women has to work
and chances of getting good jobs are higher if they are highly educated.

they have to do general studies?
Ans: In my opinion, students have to do general studies in the first year of the university due to some
important reasons.
First of all, when students enter university, they are not certain exactly what they want to do? So general
studies give opportunity to the students to explore and to choose different options.

Secondly, the most general studies are applicable to any other field so before students learn any special
subject they should have the knowledge of basic concept of general subjects.

Because of all these reasons, I strongly believe that the students have to do general studies in the first
year of the university.

the speciality subject?

many reasons.

First of all, we are oriented in one subject in terms of thinking. So we can focus more deeply in that
subject.

Secondly, we will have closer relationship with our colleagues and professors because we will be in the
same field.

Finally, we find new and new research everyday in any subject, so we will have enough time to focus
on newly researched topic.

Because of these reasons, I always believe to take only specialty subjects while we attend the university.

Que & Ans…… SHREE: 6

Ans: In my opinion, it is a very good idea to work when the students are in a high school due to certain
reasons.

First of all, when they work, they will learn responsibilities, value of work and value of earning their
own money. Not only that work teaches to organize time, discipline, respects, rules and regulations.

Second, when they work, they will come in contact with different level of peoples and it will helps to
develop communicative skills and that is more important when they become expert.

afford high fees of university education.

a lot of advanced technology.
Ans: In my opinion, having a great leader is much more of a benefit to country than having a lot of
advanced technology due to certain reasons.
First of all, advance technology is useless if it is not being organized, encouraged or implemented
properly but if we have a great leader, he provides us a vision to organize and implement it in a very
effective way.

Finally, Now a day, advanced technology are fully automatic so it will the job requirement and so forth
there is lot of un-employment but great leader have the knowledge and thinking to balance and support

workforce and industries in the next ten years in your country?
Ans: In my opinion, the speed of advancing technology will have positive impacts on the industries but
negative impacts on the workforce in next ten years in our country.

First of all, almost all advancing technology are fully automatic, with very high speed and with latest
version, so it will save our time, consumption of utility and man power. So we will have products at
very low prices with very good quality.

Que & Ans… SHREE: 7

But on the other end, however, because advancing technology are fully automatic, it will cut down the
job requirements and so forth there will be a lot of un-employment in our country.

So I expect some changes in both workforce and industries in next ten years due to speed of advancing
technology.

from their natural surroundings. What do you think about this issue?

Ans: In my opinion, We should have zoo due to certain reasons.

First of all we have zoo for the entertainment, education and science purposes. To teach our people and
children, how they feed? How they grow? And how they survive? So our children learn to appreciate
and to respect the animals. So they don’t destroy them and they know that the animals also have the
rights to live in our world.

Second, now a day people are going to natural surroundings and building the factories and destructing
the natural environment. And because of that it becomes very difficult for the animals to survive and so
many animals now a days becoming extinct. So our zoos do the research and help to preserve animals.

and running of the company. So you save a lot of money and lot of time in training and orientation.

Second, you know that person’s interest, skill, and attitude so that person comes with higher
recommendation.

Finally, when you hire any person internally then everybody in the company will know. So they get
motivated to work hard and sincerely, so they also get hired.

So I strongly believe that the companies should hire peoples internally.

First of all, when I will reach to the retirement age, I probably would have worked 30 years of my life
and that’s long enough. It means it is the time to relax and rest.

Secondly, it will open up an opportunity for young and energetic person to get hired in my place. And I
will be happy for that.

And finally, when I will reach to retirement age. Probably I will have lot of health problems and I may

that I never want.

Because of all these reasons, I would prefer to retire when I will reach to the retirement age.

retirement age?
Ans: In my opinion, there should be mandatory retirement once we reach to the retirement age due to
some important reasons.

First of all, we have many young, physically fit and skilled people in our country and they are
struggling to get a job. So if there is mandatory retirement, they will get job opportunities in our
country.

age.

the professionals but we will also loose lot of skills.

Second, if more and more peoples retired, they will be dependent on government pension and free
healthcare system and consequently it will affect our country’s economy.
Que & Ans.. SHREE: 9

Finally, now a day because of advanced healthcare and people’s awareness about their health and
exercise, our peoples at the age of 65 is still as young like at the age of 40, still energetic and they are

First of all, I will buy a new house because I don’t have the stable and secure place for my kid to grow
up and at this time we are moving from place to place paying higher rent.

Secondly, if still I have enough money after buying a home, I would invest the money in something that
I always wanted. For example I would invest some money for my children’s futures education. I would
invest some money in government’s pension plan. So I don’t need to worry about money when I
become old.

And finally, if I still left with some money I would love to offer some money in charities because we
have lot of poor people in our country.

So I would do several things if I receive a large amount of money.

would it have taken to become successful in that career?
Ans: I am a pharmacist and once I had considered choosing a carrier in master of business
administration and I believe that it would have helped me in several ways.

First of all, I won’t become a successful pharmacist if I don’t have good communication skills. Because
I have to communicate to different level of peoples quite often every day in my fields so I have to have
good communication skills.

Secondly, the administration skill. As a pharmacist I have to organize the time and casual of my juniors,
I have to structure the rules and regulations for my pharmacy. So I need good management and
administration skills.

Third important thing, I need to be assertive, I need to be frank as a boss. I need to have a lot of contacts
and I need to be updated for latest information.

So because of these reason, if I would have considered becoming a master in business administration
and it would have helped me a lot to learn all these skill. So I could become a successful pharmacist.
Que & Ans….. SHREE: 12

people believe citizens should pay for their individual healthcare, privately. What do you
think about this issue?
Ans: In my opinion, I think government should pay for their citizen’s healthcare because of several
reasons.

First of all, peoples are paying lot of taxes and I think government should use this money for essential
services. Lot of People have no food, no home and no health care and all these essential services keep
people alive. if not, I think healthcare will become a profit based business and rich people will be given
a first preference for the healthcare and I believe that the healthcare is not a luxury but it is a right of
every person to have an equal access.

Second, if government won’t pay for the healthcare, many peoples can afford to see the doctors. So we
will have rapid out break of various different diseases like Sars, and Avian flue

So because of these reasons I strongly believe that the government should pay for the healthcare of their
citizen.

24. Many people believe that when young people, who are minors, commit crimes, the parents
should be held responsible and penalized for these crimes because their children are
underage. What do you think about this issue?
Ans: In my opinion, I think the parents should be held responsible and penalized for the crimes when
their younger children commit crimes. There are several reasons.

First of all, when children are small, it is the responsibility of the parents to provide physical needs and
moral support. Not only that its time when parents should teach children discipline, respect and what is
good and what is bad? But what the many parents do? They are ways busy with their work, so they
never give attention but its real time when your children often craving for parent’s attention. So children
become distracted and they learn from friend’s, movies and from other sources and quite often they
commit some dangerous things.

Second, many parents watch violence things, sexual material in TV. in presence of their kids and not
only that even they become excited seeing those things and glorify that kind of things. In another word
parents give a positive attendance to this kind of things and our children become sensitized and they
copy what they see.

So I strongly believe that when younger people, who are minor, commit crimes, the parents should be
held responsible and penalized.

Ans: I would love to visit “Taj mahal” of India due to some important reasons.

First of all, it was built more than thousands years ago and it is still standing like before as one of the
most historic building in the world.

his lover. And something I proud because it belongs to my country.

26. What do you think can be done to reduce the air pollution in your city?
Ans: I think there are the several things we can do to reduce air pollution.

First of all, we should encourage people to use sub-ways and buses instead of using their own car. Not
only that government should impose toll on certain route especially busy route, so people will stop
using car. And it will reduce air pollution.

Second, Government should ban cigarette smoking in certain places. Not only that government should
encourage, peoples to quite smoking and government should implement certain health programmes that
teach our people about intensity of harm due to cigarette smoking. And I believe smoke of the cigarette
is one of the major causes of air pollution.

Third, I believe is the international awareness about harmful effect of gas emission. Or uses of gas. So
we should encourage people to find and use another resource if we can use it instead of gas like solar
power, like nuclear power or any other energy. which is pure and harmless to our environment.

So there are several things we can do to reduce air pollutions.

Que & Ans…… SHREE: 14

27. Many peoples believe that our society places too much importance on appearance. What do
you think about this issue?
Ans: In my opinion, our society places too much importance on appearance because of several reasons.

First of all, marketing and advertisements make our people to feel that their looks are not good enough.
So millions of dollar of our society are spent for changing looks. For ex. for lipo suction, breast
reduction and that kind of things. And because we are tempted to give certain importance to certain
looks, people try to achieve certain look and they never satisfy. Not only that people spend lot of money
after that then anything else and I think all these because of marketing.

Second, I think is because of mental and physiological impact. You see now a days in a movie that actor
or actress with a total different looks. And our people believe that they are star because they have
different looks. So these things psychologically affect peoples thinking and peoples try to copy it.

So I definitely think that we place too much importance on appearance.

28. Do you agree or disagree that we place too much importance on material things?
Ans: In my opinion, I definitely believe that we place too much importance on material things.

First of all, because people judge the value of other peoples if people have lot of material things. People
think you are great and valuable person if you have good house, good television, good furniture and that
kind of things. So people tempted to own these material things even though they go on debt. If they
have no money they use credit cards but get a material things and they spend quite lot of money on
material thing than on anything else.

Second, when people involve in car accidents, quite often people come out of car and first try to look
for the damage of the car but they hardly try to look at the injury they have. So sometimes they worry
more about the car than the life.

So I definitely think we place too much importance on material thing than anything else.

Que & Ans… SHREE: 15

number of cars on the road?
Ans: There are several ways to reduce the no. of cars on the road and to get people to use the buses and
subways.

First of all, government should impose the tolls on many certain busy roads. So people will stop using
car more often.

Second, public awareness about air pollution that is caused by car emission. And government should
start campaign and teach our people how the air pollution affect environment and so forth our health.

Third important things, government should subsidize the buses and sub-ways, so they don’t have to
increase the fares.

So there are several ways to make people using buses and subways and reduce no. of cars on the road.
30. Many people believe that children live much better today than they did 50 year ago. What do
you think about this issue?
Ans: In my opinion, I definitely believe that children live much better today than we did 50 year ago
due to several reasons.

First of all, Education is better and our children are able to learn lot more things very quickly because
they learn through new technology and they learn computers and that kind of things that we didn’t have
in older time.

Second, our children have more opportunities for education because they don’t have to work for the
family at age of 14 that we did 50 years ago. Not only they, Healthcare even is better because there are
lot of vaccination so they don’t die because of outbreak of diseases.

Finally I can say that our children have lot of opportunity to keep them fit. Because there are various
physical activities in schools now a day and various clubs to exercise.

So I think our children’s life is much better than we had it before 50 years ago.

Que & Ans…. SHREE: 16

31. Do you agree or disagree that television can have a very negative impact on our lives?
Ans: In my opinion, I strongly believe that the television negatively impact on our lives.

First of you, you see the crimes 24 a day when you turned on your TV. Whether it is a movie, sport or
news. That somebody is being killed, somebody is being murdered and somebody body is being
punched. Over and over and over and again so our children become sensitized and they try to copy what
they see. Not only that when TV shows violence or crime, more often they don’t show consequence and
our children don’t realized that there is a serious consequence after any violence and crime. So some
times they make serious crimes.

Secondly, many times our children become addicted for certain T V programmes and in consequence of
that they don’t do their home work in time, don’t sleep in time and don’t concentrate in studying. So
forth it affects their education.

So there are various negative impacts on our lives due to television.

32. What do you think is the reason why the purchases of cd’s by teen and adult is declined?
What we can do to try to solve this problem.
Ans: There are some reasons for declined in purchase of Cds by teen and adult.

First of all, because of CD-Burner. Original cd’s are still at higher price, almost 20$ per cd .So what the
people do? They buy one original Cd and make several copies on blank Cd and it cost only 20cent per
Cd.
Secondly, because of the internet, now a day you find lot of websites. Where you can hear and
download music of your choices and that’s totally free.

So these are the main reasons I believe that purchase of cds has been declined.

To prevent this problem, we can do several things.

First of all, we can make cd’s more attractive in look. Not only that we can put some block device or
technology on cd’s so people can’t copy it.

Second, we should make the music websites in such a way so that they can’t download and if they want
to download. They should become a member and pay the fees.

So we can do these things to prevent this problem.

Que & Ans…. SHREE: 17

33. There will be a new store opening near Helen’s furniture and will be selling similar items.
What do you think Helen furniture should do to keep her sales up?
Ans: Helen’s furniture can do several things to keep its sales up.

First of all, they should keep wide range of items with very good quality as well as they should offer
competitive prices for the items so everybody can afford it.

Second, they should accept all types of payment including cheques and credit card so it becomes
convenient for the customers.

Finally, they should to guarantee an excellent customer satisfaction. For that, they should offer services
and supports after sales. Not only that they should offer free delivery and free assembly for the items.

So there are several ways for Helen’s furniture to keep its sales up.

34. Some people think that furniture items made at home or by hand are of better quality. Other
thinks that items made by machine are better. Compare the qualities of those furniture items
made at home with those made by machine.
Ans: There are advantages and disadvantages of both types of furniture. First look at hand made
furniture.

Hand made furniture is made with personal touch and personal skill, so it’s more unique, more durable
and with better quality.

Not only that, it is made up of real wood and you can custom design, shape and color.

But on the other end, hand made furniture is very difficult to duplicate. And if it happens to lose any
parts then it’s very difficult to get it. Not only that it is costly because it is made by hand and that takes
time.

Now look at machine made furniture.

First of all, it is much more cheater because it’s made up on automatic machine that saves a lot of time
and a lot of work. Second, it’s very easier to find any replacement part and easy to reassemble.

But on the other end, it is common design and everybody. There is no indifference. Not only that it is
made up of ordinary wood so it’s not durable like hand made furniture.

35. Why plastic waste materials are being increased from 1950 to 2000?
Ans: Because of some important reasons, Plastic material waste has been increased from 1950 to 2000.
For example.

First of all, plastic is easy to make and easy to recycle. Over many years, science and research proved
that plastic material is more compatible with almost everything and it doesn’t contaminate any
ingredients. So quite often we use plastic to pack foods, drugs and for almost every thing.

Second, because of latest technology, we use email and we use e link and that kind of things. So we
don’t use that much paper that we used past. So we recycle almost all paper and against that we use it
very less. Not only that in many fields, plastic replaced paper because it’s more durable and long lasted.
For example, the printing of business card, visiting card and that type of things.

So there are several reasons that the waste material of plastic has been increased from 1950 to 2000.

Books, no doubt, are the great source of knowledge as it gives us a idea about particular subject in detail

the fact is that driving book can only teach the traffic rules and regulations and provide some solutions
to handle certain situations. The situation faced by the driver could be totally different what I learned
from the book and I think this the reason why all education institution run practical classes after theory

Hello everybody,

I took the test in Vancouver, B.C. last Friday. The testcenter was below a church inside a day care
center. The supervisor was in the room the whole time and tried to stay busy by moving things
around, sometimes she just sat there and looked at me and listend to my answers, that really irritated

me. I don't think I did so well, but sure hope I don't have to take this test ever again. It was my
first time, so cross your fingers for me.

- stops at a parking lot, gets out the car with the keys in his hand

reason why I subscribe the newspaper is because I want to read it before I go to work. I am at work

don't know if anyone had already discussed this.

I would like to tell everyone about the type of graph I encountered when I took the February 2005
TSE test. It was not the usual graph, pie, line, and bar graphs, we all know. It was a comparison
between two different types or brands of car. Compared in three different areas and, as far as I can
remember, it was the speed, fuel efficiency, and comfort. It was rated by the following:

Poor Good Excellent

(presented by oblong shaped which are shaded, half shaded and unshaded respectively)

I was very frustrated during that time because I studied only the three common types of graphs. I
had no idea that they would came out with this kind of graph.
Is there anyone who had encountered the same type in the graph section or had another type that
everyone is not familiar with.

Somebody asked me to clarify the meaning of "better" answer format in my earlier post. Many people
might think that we don't need to have any formats to answer because this is ”Test Spoken English."
we just need to speak whatever and make it clear, loud and understandable. It works for some people
who has better control of themselves (not nervous), good grammar, good pronunciation and clear
voice. It is easy for English speaking people to say that as well.

However, it is very hard for some people like many foreign who are nervous in test rooms. They have
many things to worry such as accent, grammar, answers etc. If they have a format for their answers,
they can focus on their other problems. It also helps them to deliver their answers effectively and do
not repeat themselves.

I have my answer format from many people who posted on this website such as Knok, Elsie, Kennyp
ect.

For example:

Opinion Question

I prefer giving money or gift certificate to my friends for their special day. (GET TO THE POINT) there
are many reasons (CONNECT TO LISTING)

First of all,... . ..... (Just 2-3 sentences ..That is..No more than that. U can give example but you have
to move on to next answer very quickly)
Secondly, ... . ....

Finally, ... ..
For all of these reasons, I prefer giving money or gift certificate to my friends. (Summary if u have
time) **** SPEAK SLOWLY ****

Or
There are many reasons.
Reason 1
It is ALSO ... reason 2
IN ADDITION, It is reason 3
For all these reason, ....

There are many formats that you can use. If you are not confident that you can come up with answers
quickly, at least you have format to start a sentence. I trained myself to answer questions in TWE
essay many times. I try to use the same format and plug in the answer. You should time yourself
when you practice.

Graph question, or complain question can have format too. For example, you should know what you
want to say right away when you see pie graph or bar graph. When i compare two pie graphs I know
that I will pick one increase category and one decrease category.

In real life, you can speak freely and try to find ways to demonstrate your point with your family,
friends and coworkers. In TSE test room, you have limited time to demonstrate your ability to speak.
The better answer format should alleviate your stress.

This is my personal view point. It might or might not work with other people.

Before you can find solution, you have to know your problems.
Hope this help some of you.
