relates to Muslim, there are
many people that do wonder
where he really stands on that.
Now, he has told me that he
is a Christian. But the debate
comes, what is a Christian?”
“For him (Obama),
going to church means he’s
a Christian. For me, the
definition of a Christian
is whether we have given
our life to Christ and are
following him in faith, and
we have trusted him as our
Lord and Savior,” Graham
continued. “That’s the
definition of a Christian; it’s
not as to what church you’re
a member of. A membership
doesn’t make you a
Christian.”

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley
signed the state’s version of the
DREAM Act into law, which would
provide in-state tuition status to
Maryland high school graduates
even if their parents are illegal
immigrants despite loud opposition
from Maryland conservatives.
“The state of Maryland is
obligated to provide a primary
education to any Maryland student,
regardless of the immigration
status of their parents,” said Shaun
Adamec, press secretary for
O’Malley. “The Governor believes
that as long as the parents can prove
they’ve paid Maryland taxes, are on
a path to citizenship, and the student
is a graduate of Maryland schools,
that college affordability ought to
be a priority of ours as well.”
Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown agreed
with Adamec saying the state
should provide equal opportunities
to those who contribute to the well
being of Maryland. “Maryland’s
economy and future leadership
have much to gain by removing
financial barriers to help children
who have attended and graduated
from Maryland high schools access
an affordable college education so
they can better contribute to their
communities,” Brown said.
However, not everybody is
in support of this bill. Del. Pat
McDonough, R.-Dist. 7, named

because according to him, it makes
no sense. He says that the law
violates federal statutes against

state shouldn’t be helping people
who violate that law.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley
signed a bill into law last week
creating a program to monitor
prescription drug use in the state of
Maryland. “Public safety is among
our most solemn obligations as public
servants, and preventing the abuse
of prescription
drugs – the
fastest growing
drug problem in
Maryland – is
a big part of
our strategy to
protect Maryland
families,” said
Gov. O’Malley
in a statement.
The program, administered by
the Maryland Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), will
target addictive prescription drugs
and electronically link them through
the medical and pharmaceutical
communities according to the DHMH. admission related to the abuse of

Christmas Comes Early for 83 Prince George’s Homeowners

Md. — A beautiful but cool
sunny spring morning was
the scene April 30 at the
home of Alice Callaham
in Upper Marlboro where
repairs and renovations
were well underway as
part of the 23rd Annual
Christmas in April – a Prince
George’s County program.
This was one of 83 homes
receiving services this year
from approximately 3,500
volunteers.
Elected officials,
businesses, military,
community organizations,
churches, and concerned
caring citizens and youth
are donating their time,
resources, and hard work
extending a helping hand
to elderly, low-income,
and disabled homeowners
throughout the county.
County Executive
Rushern L. Baker III, along
with his wife Christa, came
early and immediately began
helping to treat the newly
completed ramp on the front
of the home that will provide
mobility to the home for
a 19-year-old paraplegic
injured in a tragic Jan. 24
auto accident that claimed the
life of his older brother.
Commenting on the
program, Baker stated, “The

reduce our deficit and will result in a dwindling tax base.  I
also believe his proposal – in the end – will ultimately kill
Medicare and Medicaid, two of the most important programs
in our nation’s history. A credible plan must put all spending –
including defense, discretionary and mandatory – on the table,
along with genuine tax reform that raises additional revenues
by closing loopholes and simplifying the tax code.  
As we evaluate the Ryan budget plan, we must remember
that Medicare, along with Social Security, helped create the
middle class of the 20th century. Congress created Medicare
in 1965 because most seniors were unable to purchase health

Dirty Tactics of a Growing Dial-a-Porn Empire

recently uncovered a greedy Dial-a-Porn network that
gobbles up 1-800 numbers the moment they are relinquished
and redirects them to phone-sex services without changing
their names. (David B. Caruso, “Porn company is amassing
1-800 numbers,” 4/19/11.) Phone numbers previously held
by Cadillac and Whirlpool are examples of other toll-free
lines that PrimeTel Communications of Philadelphia has
transformed into phone-sex lines through its business partner,
National A-1 Advertising. Apparently snaring the unsuspecting
makes for good business.
The “dirty trick” aspect of PrimeTel’s approach is
noteworthy, but so is the sheer number of toll-free lines it has
amassed. PrimeTel controls 1.7 million 800 numbers – more
than any company, including Verizon and AT&T. And most of
these toll-free numbers redirect callers to phone sex, according
to an industry source.
How many women (and men) must be waiting to provide
this degrading “service” to customers on 1.7 million lines?
And how many millions of lonely souls are willing to pay so
much per minute to have phone sex with strangers?
The Dial-a-Porn industry was born in the 1980s. As early
as 1983 the FCC reported that phone-sex lines received up to
half a million calls a day. Employers even went to Congress
over the astronomical bills they had to pay for calls employees
made on company time.
But what made the problem especially horrific, says
Morality in Media Inc. (MIM), was that any child old enough
to use a telephone could reach thousands of Dial-a-Porn lines
without proof of age or pre-payment; calls were automatically
billed to phone numbers.
MIM has chronicled scores of news reports on the problem,
including the case of the $10 million lawsuit filed against
Pacific Bell and a phone-sex company by the parents of a
12-year-old boy and the 4-year-old girl he was accused of
sexually molesting after listening to phone sex for hours.
Psychologist Victor Kline, an expert on how pornography
affects the brain, asserted in sworn testimony that the boy’s
exposure to dial-a-porn was a direct and causal contribution to
the assault of the toddler.
Fortunately the law now requires commercial phone sex
providers to take modest steps to increase the likelihood that
children are not among their customers (such as requiring
purchase by credit card). Unfortunately, what was a somewhat
contained problem in the 1980s (due to the static nature of
phones) has potentially exploded today in the age of the cell
phone.
The AP story got one part spectacularly wrong. “There is
nothing illegal about using toll-free phone services to promote
adult entertainment,” says the AP. Nothing illegal if the
content of your material is legal, that is.
No one has a First Amendment right to express content that
is “obscene.” The Supreme Court has upheld this distinction
between legal and illegal speech and in the 1973 case of Miller
v. California set guidelines for defining what is “obscene,”
including “patently offensive representations or descriptions
of ultimate sexual acts, normal or perverted.” Juries have
the last word on offensiveness and on whether material can
be redeemed for having serious literary, artistic, political or
scientific value. “Obscenity” is the legal term; a commonplace
reference might be “hardcore porn.” Deep Throat, not
Michelangelo’s David.
The federal criminal code specifically outlaws the use
of the telephone to make obscene communications for
commercial purposes in 47 U.S.C. 223(b), added by Congress
in 1988 and upheld by the Supreme Court a year later in Sable
Communications of California, Inc. v. FCC. Dial-a-Porn
providers that peddle hardcore pornography, therefore, can and
should be prosecuted under 47 U.S.C. 223(b). Prosecutions
have been brought in the past and juries have found content to
be obscene.
If most of PrimeTel’s 1.7 million numbers are phone sex
lines, is the content provided on every one of them staying this
side of the line of legality?
Ultimately it’s up to the American people, as jurors, to
decide what pornography is obscene, and in this way to have
a voice in shaping the culture. But if obscenity prosecutions
are never brought, then trials never commence, juries never
sit, and pornography, however extreme, is never curtailed.
Enforcing our nation’s obscenity laws is the job of Attorney
General Eric Holder. Failing to enforce them robs Americans
of their voice on the matter.
Someone will shape the culture. Leaving it to the

hydroxycarbamide for
children and adolescents
with sickle-cell anaemia,

short-term and long-term
safety profile, suggest that

become the standard treatment

major effect on guidelines for
the management of children

Entertainer, Seeks to Inspire
Others With Differences

Growing up, Ezemdi always knew he was different from other kids his
age. While most children were playing outside, he was forced to stay
indoors because his skin was sensitive to the sun. He, unlike his peers, had
albinism, i.e., he was an albino.
“I...was looked at differently by not even just kids, but adults [also],”
Ezemedi told the AFRO in a recent interview. “So, I kind of always
knew that I was different and I was uncomfortable in my own skin.
When it came to [hanging out] with my [peers], I always wanted to
blend in with them and just be a normal kid.”
But the experience didn’t get him down. In fact, it actually worked
in his favor. Now, the 26-year-old is a talented vocalist, producer and
songwriter.
“I remember a time when I was in elementary school and because I
couldn’t go outside, I started playing on an old raggedy piano that was there
and just started messing around with it,” Ezemdi said. “That’s how it all
started.”

Plus-Size Model Mia Amber Davis Dies Suddenly at 36

Mia Amber Davis, a Black plus-size model widely
recognized for her appearance in the movie Road Trip, died on
May 10. She was 36.
While initial reports said her cause of death unknown, E!
Online later reported that the model and actress died from
a blood clot following knee surgery. Davis’ cousin, UCLA
assistant professor of sociology Dr. Mignon R. Moore, told E!
that the late star’s husband was notified by the coroner of the
preliminary finding
the following day.

told E!. “This was
such an unexpected
loss, and she went
to a very reputable
physician. I took
her myself on the
day of her surgery
and within 24
hours she was
dead.”

According to TMZ, Davis’ husband had spoken to her
following surgery and said she sounded fine. But a few hours
later, he received a call saying that she was experiencing bouts
of dizziness. Then, he received another call shortly thereafter
informing him that his wife had died.
In addition to playing the character Rhonda in the 2000
comedy Road Trip, Davis is also known for her work with plus-
size fashion store Ashley Stewart. She also appeared as the face
of singer Jill Scott’s Butterfly Bra and served as the creative
editor-at-large for Plus Model magazine, according to The
Huffington Post.
The magazine’s editor, Madeline Jones, expressed her
bereavement at the model’s passing in a recent blog post.
“Mia Amber was an angel—a compassionate person who
always thought about others before herself,” Jones wrote. “She
was a super model and a industry leader because it was her love
for the women she represented that kept pushing her when the
industry itself did not embrace her. Anyone else would have
given up, but Mia remained steadfast in her career, knowing
that she was not just doing it for her own benefit, but for
women of all ages.”
Davis’ family is planning to hold funeral services in New
York, but no official date has been set.
Whitney Houston in Rehab – Again
Music icon Whitney Houston has re-entered rehab for drug
and alcohol abuse, her spokeswoman said May 9.
Kristen Foster said the 47-year-old singer, who dominated
pop music charts in the ‘80s and ‘90s and released a comeback
album in 2009, is currently in an outpatient program “to
support her long-standing recovery process.”
Foster didn’t release further details, as doing so would

musicians as he played piano at his church in Harlem. Shortly thereafter, he began
picking up more musical instruments and mastered each of them.
In high school he discovered another talent. After experimenting with
his voice, he and two other friends formed a group that performed at school
basketball games and local talent shows. Ezemdi later attended Berklee College of
Music and formed his own licensing company and then landed his big break when
label owner Mark Geohagan signed him to Crazee House Records.
Now, Ezemdi’s anticipating the upcoming release of his first single “Take Off,”
which will appear on his debut album. He says By Your Side will be released in
June and will be a musical blend of romantic ballads and urban mid-tempo songs
catering to the fairer sex.
“[The album] will have good music with a positive message behind it,”
Ezemdi said. “A lot of the songs on the album are geared towards women,
reminding them that at the end of the day there are still some good men out
in the world—you just have to look for them.”
In addition to crafting his own hits, he’s also in the midst of producing
records for a string of national and international artists.
But while the talented musician is surely on the heels of success, he
says his primary reason for pursuing a major career in the music industry
is so he could serve as an inspiration to people across the globe who are
also different from the norm.
“I’m what you would call the Whitest Black man in the world, but
I’m doing what I love to do and [I want to tell people] you can do that,
too,” Ezemdi said. “Anybody that feels uncomfortable in their own skin
is who I’m trying to reach.”

Bethune-Cookman Defeats Delaware State for the MEAC Softball Title

Bethune-Cookman (BCC) overcame Delaware State, 5-4, in
eight innings to win the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
(MEAC) Softball Championship, May 15 at the Ormond Beach
Sports Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The victory, Bethune-Cookman’s second consecutive
softball title, gives the school an automatic bid to the 2011
NCAA Division I Softball Championship tournament. The
pairings were announced on a selection show May 15 at 10
p.m. on ESPNU. The conference softball championship was
delayed May 14 due to severe lightning.
Bethune-Cookman led the series, 1-0, after a 7-1 blowout
win over Delaware State in game one of the double-elimination
bracket. Game two was tied, 2-2, at the bottom of the second
inning when the lightning began.
Bethune-Cookman’s win wasn’t easy. The squad fell once
to Delaware State during the tournament’s early rounds on
May 13, sending BCC to the loser’s bracket in the double-
elimination tournament. But the Wildcats bounced back by finals and another shot at Delaware State.
