Purpose
The purpose of this assessment is to emphasize the importance of understanding the
design process to create successful outcomes. Conceptual thinking and analysing design
helps to create innovative effective solutions within the design process.

Description
You are required to design a company logo based on your major study area. The logo must
NOT be text based – there MUST be a graphic within the design.
You must create 20 thumbnails on paper using a black pen and colour pencils only.
NO software programs will be used at this stage – all the thumbnails will be hand drawn on
A4 paper or sketch block. You are also required to create name for your company. (please
do not use your name – be more creative!!) The name of the company must be
incorporated into the logo design!!
a) Animation major – ‘Animation production company’
b) Games Design & Programming major – ‘Games production company’
c) Graphic Design & Interactive Media major – ‘Music production company’
After completing your 20 thumbnail designs, choose your best thumbnail and refine the
design even further – adding more clarity & detail. This refined design must be on a
separate sheet of A4 paper.
The final design should be drawn larger than the previous thumbnails -
approximately 10cm (w) x 10cm (h). Using black pen and colour pencil.
Your logo design should reflect your area of study! Do NOT use any computer software for
this assignment – it is TOTALLY manual based.
Finally you are required to participate in an in-class (tutorial group) critique of your final
design. The remainder (20) thumbnail designs will not be critiqued due to tutorial time

constraints. The critique will be projector based, so you will need to submit a jpeg scan of
your chosen final design.
**PLEASE NOTE - Before you submit - make sure you SCAN all your paper based
logo designs. You will need a scan of your work for Assessment 1B and the
Assessment 1A critique.

Submission Requirements
• Your submission must include:
o 20 thumbnails on A4 sheet/s. (Sketchbook)
o One final design on A4 sheet. (Sketchbook)
o A JPEG scan of your chosen final design for the class critique.

**NOTE - Cut pages out of your sketchbook – place into plastic


sleeve. Please do NOT submit the whole sketchbook!!

• Submissions sent by email will not be accepted.
• It is your responsibility to keep a copy of all your assessments.
• Penalties are calculated at 10% of the assessment for each working day that the
assessment is late.

Assessment: 1B – Final logos

Weight: 20%

Due Date: Week 6, 4.00pm Friday 25th March

Purpose
This assessment item is designed to provide an understanding of the application of design
principles to corporate identity. The previous thumbnail designs will be translated into
computer rendered final art and incorporated feedback from assessment 1A critique.
Description
You are required to create a computer representation of your previous final & thumbnail
designs from Assessment 1. Using illustrators wide range of drawing tools convert the
designs into finished art, which includes typographical design.
Choose the one final design and 3 well-designed thumbnails (4 logos in total). You
should refine your designs further; look for ways of improving the overall design. Think
carefully about typography, colour, shape, line, effects, gradients, balance, emphasis, unity
etc - as discussed in the lecture slides. Your computer designs MAY be different from your
original pen designs in Assessment 1A – this is fine!! Remember YOU are refining your
designs through a process.
**Remember the designs should reflect your major area of study. (An animation logo
should look like an animation logo)
Use the vector program ‘Adobe Illustrator’ only. NO ‘Raster imports’ or ‘Live Trace’
are to be used in this assessment.
• Size: A4
• Use the .AIT template as provided in the assessment folder.
• Please convert all type to Outlines before submitting. Type>Create Outlines.
• Please save the logo designs in .AI, .PDF & .EPS file formats.

Submission Requirements
• Your submission must include:
o An Illustrator .AI file of your logo including layers. Please do not flatten.
o A PDF (portable document format) of your completed logo.
o An EPS (encapsulated postscript file) of your completed logo. (*printing file).
o Submit your previous scan of your chosen final design and 20 thumbnails
(JPEG) from Assessment 1A
• You should put all your files into one folder identified with your name and student
number using the standard QANTM naming:
<courseCode>_Ass<#>_Tute<#>_<SURNAME>_<firstname>_v<#>.doc
eg. DES101_Ass1B_Tute1_MORRIS_Paul_v1.ai/pdf/eps
• Then your entire electronic submission must be saved to the Y-drive, where it must
be placed in the Assessment 1B folder of your tutorial group for DES101.
Assessments not following these standards will have to be resubmitted, and may incur late
penalties. Penalties are calculated at 10% of the assessment for each working day that the
assessment is late.

critique

Weight: 30%

Due Date: Week 10. In class

Purpose
This assessment is created to provide experimentation and practice that requires a specific
design solution. Then work through a review process and make the necessary changes
directed by your lecturer/client.
Description
You are required to design and present an actual packaging product design from your
major. This project will encompass the knowledge from slides and tutorials. Reflect on the
design theories and the various techniques covered previously in this unit. You will
complete:
a) Animation major – Animation DVD cover – (based on an animation film).
b) Games Design & Programming major – Computer games DVD cover.
c) Graphic Design & Interactive Media major – Music DVD cover.
All majors must have a character incorporated in the DVD cover. The character must be
painted in Photoshop however black line (stroke) is optional. (**Your character does not
need to be original – you may trace the character if desired). The style of illustration is
your choice but must be representational of the music, film or game culture. Evidence of
layers is very important – do NOT flatten your artwork.
Background images can either be photographic or digitally paint based. Use stock.xchng
(www.sxc.hu) for photographic references. You may import from illustrator if required.
(**Drawing tools in illustrator are much better than Photoshop.)
Make appropriate typography choices – make sure the typography reflects the content of
your film, game or music production company.
Observe the contents of DVD’s and game packages – make sure you add all the details.
Attention to detail is very important. Do not scan information details from other DVD’s –

quality is significantly reduced. Please place your company production logo from
assessment 1B on your cover design!!
Refer to the Specifications (.pdf) for details & sizes - a) Animation DVD cover b) Computer
games DVD cover & c) Music DVD cover. (This PDF file is located in the assessment criteria
folder).
Finally you are required to participate in an in-class (tutorial group) critique of your DVD
cover design. The critique will be projector based, so you will need to submit a JPEG file of
your DVD cover.

Weight: 20%

Due Date: Week 12, Friday 6th May

Purpose
Demonstrate your understanding of the design process and approval process and actively
improve your design after receiving feedback.

Submission Requirements
• Your submission must include:
o Written notes typed up in MS Word of approximately 500 words detailing the
feedback given during the critique. You must use the ‘word template’ file
located in the ‘Assessment Criteria’ folder.
1. Changes made.
2. Why you made any changes?
3. Your opinion as to the necessity for the changes.
4. How long the changes took you?
5. Changes you did not make and why?
6. Evaluation of your communication process with the
lecturer/client from beginning to final submission.
o The Before the critique and after. – name your work –
(a) before_YourName.psd and (b) after_ YourName.psd (2 .psd files in total)
o The Photoshop (.psd) file containing your design. You must show ALL your
layers. Do NOT submit artwork that is flattened!
• Your entire electronic submission must be saved in electronic format to the Y-drive,
and placed in the Assessment 2B folder of your tutorial group for DES101. If more
than one file exists you should put all the files into one folder identified with your
name using the standard QANTM naming:

The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your engagement with key factors linked
to effective interactive environments. You will do this by actively participating in class work
and discussions and demonstrating effective time management skills.

Description
You are required to:
• Actively participate in class discussions.
• Arrive on time for class and return promptly to class after breaks.
• Work on the required tutorial during class time.

Submission Requirements
