An Interview with: Baroness Greenfield
E ver wondered about the difference be-
tween the mind & the brain? Ever bothered your
mind to ask why each one behaves in a certain
way. Is it a matter of the genes embedded in our
DNA? Or it’s our experiences in life that control
our attitude!!!
Ever thought of having a creative mind?
Then, is it sort of a mere coincidence like a per-
sonal talent? Or a habit of a trained mind?
Suzan Greenfield, a specialist in Neurosci-
ence can explain how one’s experiences affect
his brain physiology. Greenfield -a British scien-
tist & member of the House of Lords- is a profes-
sor at Oxford University who has researched on
the etiology of neuronal diseases like Alzheim-
er’s & Parkinson’s disease.
For this sake, she created 3 research & bio-
technology companies; Synaptica , Brainboost &
Neurodiagnostics. Besides, Greenfield also pub-
lished several science books about the brain;
In 1995,” Journey to the centers of the mind” &
in 2002, “ The private life of the brain”.
Now we’re anxious to know how she ac-
complished her success & learn more about our
brains.
Fortunately, we were able to contact her on an
Online chat via the internet….
And we started by asking her :
What is the difference between the Mind &
the Brain?
I believe the mind to be the personalization of
the brain, as referred to in my book: ‘Tomorrow’s
People’ or ‘Private Life of the Brain’. In other
words, The configuration of the synaptic con-
nections in someone’s brain are shaped by his
individual experiences, which gradually person-
alize his brain, showing his mind.
How is Neuroscience related to the cognitive
abilities of a person?
Neuroscience underpins all cognitive abilities:
if we are defining neuroscience as the mecha-
nisms of neuronal communication at the synap-
tic level, and cognitive abilities as the final end
product, - then they are directly linked to one
another.
“Genes record everything about a person’s
intelligence & his behavior”.
To what extent are these words correct?
Although genes are necessary for mental func-
tion, they are not sufficient, - and people often
confuse these two issues. How could you have
intelligence for example trapped inside the
DNA? We know that although there is an intel

ligence component it is relatively small, given
that it is hard to disentangle the effects of the
environment: even in twins reared apart, there
is the issue of having shared the same womb.
Moreover, it’s been calculated by someone
called Gosling that, even if there were a gene for
intelligence, even if it were a very major gene, it
could only make a difference of 1 or 2% in one’s
IQ. Therefore I am not saying that genes aren’t
important, - when they go wrong, then there is a
problem, - but that doesn’t mean they encapsu-
late a whole mental trait.
What evidence do you have on the effect of
experiences on developing the neurons of
the brain?

How can the style of teaching be
correlated to Creativity & Imagination?
I think teachers have to create an
environment where people feel self-confident
and are able to take risks, because they are
prerequisites for creativity and imagination.
We also need time and an appropriate
environment. For you can't be teaching
creativity, but you can help nurture it by a
positive attitude.
How can you harness the new
technologies to maximize the potential of
the individual?
I think the way that we can harness the new
technologies is to think of ways in which we
can help people be creative, and individually

A Passion With Kinetic Energy

“ reativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity.” Said
Edwin Land.
Creativity is when someone is thinking of a certain idea
than no other can see, but him. Just him can figure its
dimensions & how this idea can take shape & materialize
to be a living certainty. He’d have to go through a series of
stages till he reaches the final destination.
First, it starts with hearing the echo of this idea in his
head. It keeps telling him, “I’m the passion for something
new, but still wandering with no clue. I got tired of being
hidden. I can’t take it no more. I’ve been pressed in, told
to disappear. They all wanted me down & only me wished
for the UP!!! I need to take my shape. I need to get mate-
rialized. They’ve erased my features & my thoughts are
randomized.
I am the passion that wants to fulfill my wish. I am my
dreams & my desires.
I wanted to be a main course when they wanted me a
side-dish. But, I won’t give in. No matter what.
Curtains withdrawn up. Sunglasses put off. It’s time you
unleash my buried thoughts. Hey!! Don’t scream & don’t
yell. I’m not wasting your time. My mind is in a mess…I’m
wondering if I can make it, but truly can’t guess.
These thoughts always echoed in his mind. He knew it
that it wasn’t easy for his thoughts to find their way.
He had his reasons. He always said, “All my life I’ve seen
them in fours. They’ve conspired on my existence &
wanted to dim my light. Now, I can see them clearly. Their
shadows have materialized severely. They are the obsta-
cles that kept me in for so long. They’ve tied my tongue &
stole my song. They are the Forces of the Ever. They have
fooled me enough. Oh! They are so clever.”
These Forces of the Ever are Mr. Never, Miss Forever, Mr.
Wherever & Mr. Whoever. Each of them is an obstacle we
meet along our journey to succeed. Sometimes they are
disguised, so we don’t recognize them.
We start with Mr. Never: representing the ‘Impossibil-
ity of reaching one’s goal.’ We can see him in every voice
that tells us: Never will you go for your goal. Never will you
reach that far. So disappointing are these words for they
can bury your dreams so deep under your skin, telling you
to forget them, you’d never win.
We get to believe this Mr. Never & leave our inner call.
He distracts our minds from reaching our goal.
Then, here comes Miss Forever representing: ‘The false
pursuit of the non-lasting temptations’. Miss Forever may
get you busy working on other things that are not essen-
tial to your plan & waste your time. This may distract you
from focusing on your end-point. She will make you think
these things would last Forever, though they are not last-
ing & you’d only get confused.
To my astonishment, Mr. Never met Miss Forever &
decided they’d be friends. They’ve changed their minds
& together they’ve agreed that one should, “Never say
Forever coz’ forever isn’t real. Forever is what you think
and forever is what you feel. So, if you say forever, please
promise that you’ll try. But, Never say Forever coz’ forever
makes me cry”.
Now, let me introduce you to Mr. Wherever: ‘Represent-
ing the fear of defeats’. He’s once told me that, “Wher-

ever I’m gonna fall, that’s where I will always stay.” He
depressed my every wish to succeed. He deceived me
& I surrendered under the excuse of not wanting to hurt
myself. I was afraid to think so high then fall & cry
I was so stupid to have thought this way. But an alterna-
tive never appeared in my way.
But now I know it : “I hear it true whenever I fall. And I feel
it when I sorrow more.
That it’s better to have tried & lost, than never to have tried
at all.”
Mr. Whoever. My last deceiving friend; Representing: ‘the
fear of realizing my dream.’ Beware of this Mr.Whoever
coz’ he is the smartest of all. There could be a time when
we’re just one step from reaching what we want when such
a feeling dominates us. For, whoever sees you succeed-
ing will feel you don’t deserve what you have in hand &
will fill your conscience with a sense of guilt. Just don’t
forget all the hard times you’ve been through & all the
sufferings you had to endure. Relieve your mind. You are
worth it. They just don’t know how hard you were getting
on yourself.
Seeing these obstacles revealed right in front of our
eyes gives us confidence that we can beat them. They
were the reason we were holding back. But just with a lit-
tle modification of how we perceive them, we can be get-
ting over this stage. Our holding back for so long made
us forget that we can ever move again. Once you start
working on materializing your passions, you’d maintain
the tempo, where the first step is the hardest & the rest
just flows.
The term Inertia -in Physics- is the tendency of a
body to maintain either its state of rest or motion.
And here, The Inertia is your willingliness to fill your mind
with these Forces of the Ever, that buried your feelings for
so long. Knowing that a feeling that is denied only grows
stronger.
From one side you’re dimming your sense of creativ-
ity & breaking it apart, whereas on the other side, it had
that conviction about it that someday it’d get unleashed &
move on.
“Mirages are desires, that because of their intensity
materialized over the sand of the desert.”-from The Alche-
mist.
This desire of your own , having accumulated so heavily
will intensify & materialize to take a shape in the real life.
But only those who want it that much, will be the only ones
who will see it. Just Beware that a Mirage is just an illu-
sion, while your dream is so attainable.
Negative Thinking. Negative Actions……. Positive Thinking.

It’s all within your mind. It’s your belief if it’s gonna
work out or not. Such a technique is known- in Psychol-
ogy-
as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT ), it shows us how
modifying one’s thinking affects his attitude & conse-
quently his actions. With just a closer look, the Kinetic
Energy would be the best to explain it.
Your Kinetic Energy is your move to take actions to ma-
terialize your satisfactions.
K.E. = ½ m v2. Scientifically-talking, m: is the mass &
v: is the velocity. Intelligently-talking, we can understand
from this equation how to get our passion for a new con-
cept into acion.
-We can think of the (m): as the Motor. This Motor is the
stimulant that hastens the urge to take an action; it alerts
you to the opportunities that you shouldn’t be missing. The
motor is the motive that energizes you to materialize your
thoughts into actions. It’s the driving force that stimulates
your thinking deep enough to impart a change on yourself,
which would consequently be reflected on your outside.
The (V) is the Vehicle; A vehicle is the medium that
transports objects or people from one point to another.
This vehicle is a carrier that transports you from the static
state to the dynamic state in action
For a new idea to be transformed from your mind to the
real practical life, this requires its passing by 2 stages;
An internal stage, & an external one. So, it’s not just a
vehicle, it’s a vehicle squared (V2). First, the internal one
which transforms your way of thinking to a more posi-
tive attitude, then, the external stage that transforms your
behavior from a recipient awaiting the opportunities to a
sender who sends the right impulses at the right timing.
It’s also worth mentioning that half (1/2) of this is due to
complete cleverness of your own & the other half is a gift
from God that would put you on the right track & facilitate
everything for you.
Your passion is your desire & willingliness to get what
you want. It’s only a thought- a static body at rest- help-
less & unnoticed …Till something mediates its transforma-
tion from the sleepy static state to an active dynamic one.
The Kinetic Energy is the action taken to unleash your
passion for a certain desire.
A Passion is just a word, till the Kinetic Energy comes
along and gives it meaning. Their gathering together is far
beyond just a coincidence. For it’s the promising desire
inside each of them that insisted on going its own way.
And each one’s own way is the other’s destined road in
life. Oh! It’s a Passion with Kinetic Energy.
Each alone won’t do. However, their gathering together
things seem perfectly right.
Together they represent the ultimate force to initiate
your first steps towards Creativity & Achievement.
In order to create, there must be a dynamic force. And what
force is more potent than loving what you are doing.
