DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMAN

A new strategy project in being made for reducing discrimination against

woman. It covers bigger salaries, job promotions and more jobs in
management for woman (includes ranking jobs).

-What do you think about how a woman can get a job nowadays?
My opinion in that woman is disadvantaged on labor market and also
in politics and culture. After a market analysis that makes part of a strategy
project for equal chances between man and woman, woman are weekly
represented in decision making and they have smaller salaries. By making
projects that can turn out these discrepancies costs a lot.

-Why do you think this projects cost a lot?

Because National Agency for Equal Chances is trying to put on some
projects that cost over 533.000 RON. The money can be obtained form
founds allocated from the state budget; external redeemable founds and
grants, donations and sponsorships. To encourage the participation of
woman in decision making (as well as man) are needed founds that reach
140.000RON. From this money 110.000RON will be used for making a
study to identify the main characteristics of man and woman. Also, making
an opinion poll to find out what Romanian people believe about this and if
they are able to manage this situation and to accept it.

-Personally, do you think that a woman can be as good as a man in

management?
Yes, my opinion is that we should consider woman as capable as a
man because nowadays they get the same education as a man, they go to
same schools and same universities and the most important woman can
choose to study any area (as mechanics, chemistry, law, etc), so woman’s
possibilities are not limited as they were sometimes.
More than that, they can be even better than a man is.
-Do you think that our country needs more women in politics?
I guess that even if some women are involved in politics, there are
more men. Our country is not ready for a woman who can lead in politics
because woman is still considered weak and sensitive, and even if we have
examples of woman that lead in politics or business area, they are
considered to be exceptions.
But also there are areas that are dominated by woman, such as
medical institutes (as hospitals, because most of the doctors are women),
teaching, public administration. Even if there are areas that are exclusively
dominated by women, surprisingly the person who manage the institution is
a man, so from this point of view woman are discriminated.
As an example, an opinion poll says that even if 72,6 % of the
teachers are women, the rate percent woman who manage the institution is
smaller with 20%. More than that woman is less paid than a man is.

-This is another big issue: that woman is less paid than a man. What do you
think about that?
I think that woman is less paid that a man because in the process of
sparing them for doing hard jobs in the past (or jobs that are only
considered by some of us being hard or “not for a woman”), we forgot that
this situation is changed. We cannot say that there are the same jobs as they
were long time ago, because technology is developing quickly and is made
to relieve the physical work. Nowadays in less areas we can talk about
physical work, because it is being replaced with technology, but we are
accustomed to act as our grandparents acted, so woman are discriminated.

-And the last question, which do you think are the solutions in these issue?
My opinion is that we can solve the problem against woman
discrimination by making a campaign to inform people, starting with
schools, give examples and encourage formation in all areas for woman,
because personally I think they are more capable than a man to lead in
more areas, due to characteristics as kindness, more attention at details,
stubbornness, ambitious and why not, they can be as smart as a man or even
smarter.
As a conclusion I can say that to change this kind of discrimination,
and more than that, all kinds of discrimination we have to enhance our legal
system and try to make laws that protects people against discrimination,
because at this moment, discrimination in our country is a subject that is not
getting all the attention that it needs.
Romanian people are used to be treated in some ways that can be
considered discriminatory and they don’t act. Why they don’t act? Because
they are afraid, they don’t know for sure when they are discriminated and
what possibilities they have to prevent this or to stop it.
The first step in stopping any kind of discrimination is to explain
everybody which are the types of discrimination, when they are
discriminated, what are their rights, what they can do and can’t do at work,
how can they act and react if they are discriminated, and many other things.
For that enhancing the legal system in these area is a “must have” and
without it discrimination remains something shallow.
