Why is the media here so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achieveme
nts?
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refus
e to acknowledge them. Why?
We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.
Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustai
ning, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media i
s only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.
I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day a
fter a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had
struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentlem
an who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It
was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killin
gs, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NE
GATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign thing
s? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.
Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect
comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 yea
r old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She
replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to bu
ild this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nat
ion; it is a highly developed nation.
Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.
Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours..
YOU say that our government is inefficient.
YOU say that our laws are too old.
YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.
YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the
worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.
YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.
YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?
Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - 'YOURS'. Give him a fac
e - 'YOURS'. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best.
In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores.
YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs
. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road
) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking
ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective o
f your status identity. In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn'
t dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out w
ithout your head covered in Jeddah.
YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10
pounds (Rs.650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to s
omeone else. 'YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington
and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?
). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck a
n empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Aus
tralia and New Zealand ..
Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo ? Why don't YOU use examination
jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston ??? We are still talking of the same
YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but
cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the mom
ent you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen
in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India ?
In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same
in Japan ..
Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right. We go to the polls to choose
a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.
We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything fo
r us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to cl
ean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are
we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We
expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn th
e proper use of bathrooms.
We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries
but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies e
ven to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.
When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl
child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do th
e reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how w
ill it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to c
hange the system?
What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neigh
bours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But
definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contr
ibution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe coco
on and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to c
ome along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave t
he country and run away.
Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory
and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When
England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When
the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian
government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of fee
ding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.
Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of
introspection and pricks one's conscience too.. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's wo
rds to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians...
'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMER
ICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'
Lets do what India needs from us.
Forward this mail to each Indian for a change instead of sending Jokes or junk m
ails.
Thank you,
Dr.. Abdul Kalam
My comments
When Dr. Abdul Kalam was the President, did he do his duty? Did he take a decis
ion on the mercy petition of Afzal Guru? Why could he not take the decision? H
e did not do his duty but he expects me as an Indian to do my duty. Take the ca
se of Manmohan Singh who is supposed to be an honest Prime Minister. He knew th
at there were criminals in his Cabinet but he did not throw them out of the Cabi
net. He did not do his duty. Look at Italian born Sonia Gandhi. Going by Abdu
l Kalam, she like all Italian born should have done her duty but she allowed cri
minals to become ministers in UPA Cabinet when she was UPA chairperson. It is e
asy for Dr. Kalam to lecture but no Indian is going to listen to him unless like
Mahatma Gandhi, he wears the dress which is worn by an average poor Indian and
eats only what an average poor Indian can afford to eat. And may I state that a
n average Indian is guided by the leadership. Compare the leaders in America
and England and Singapore with our leaders and sad to say that our leaders stand
nowhere. So, how can they expect us, common persons, to stand on the same foot
ing with America and England. If a Minister is strict, not a single person in h
is Ministry can be corrupt but the sad thing is that Ministers themselves are co
rrupt to the core. Reformation would not start at the bottom but from the top.
Yatha Raja Tatha Praja. We must have heads of Government like Raja Ram who bec
ame a Maryada Purshotam and set an example for his subjects. But where Dr. Abdu
l Kalam stands? He has not performed his duty of taking a decision on the Mercy
petition of Afzal Guru. How can he expect other Indians to do their duty.
My friend's comments
As per the rules, the President forwards the Supreme Court judgement in cases of
execution for the crimes committed, to the Prime Minister, who has to place it
before the Cabinet and return the same to the President for final approval. Dr.K
alam could not take any further step before the file comes back to him and it di
dn't until his term was over.
There is no time limit set for such files to be returned by PM and the Congress
was playing vo-bank politics not ot execute Afzal. If Pakistn was not in present
turmoil, you would have seen another aircraft highjack and the exchange of Afza
l accompanied by Chidambaram.
The stage of mercy petotion arisenly after the file is returned by the GOI
In case of the non-elected PM of the Country, the less said the better. He does
everything on the sly, lies outright on important issues and signs agreements wi
thout reading the drafts as in Sham E Sharif and declared "Love of all Indians o
f President Bush" sparing no love for the successor demanded China to intervene
in Pak-India dispute!!
My reply
I do not agree with you. If the file has not come back from PM, Abdul Kalam sho
uld have reminded him and if reminders failed to work, he should have called the
PM. If even after that, the PM did not submit the file, the President should h
ave sought the opinion of the Supreme Court as to whether he had to consult the
PM in the case of Mercy Petitions also He should have aired his views in the me
dia. Media is not negative. It is media which is exposing the corruption. Comi
ng back to Mr. Abdul Kalam, if PM had objected to his going to the media, then h
e should have tendered his resignation. There were many ways in which he could
have hastened the case of the Mercy Petition. In my view, the Mercy Petition is
submitted to the President for his consideration and the President should take
decision on that without consulting anybody. This point needs to be clarified b
y the Supreme Court. Even now the present President has not taken a decision in
the matter.
You see, we Indians follow rules when we are abroad because there the Govts. are
very tough because of their tough leaders. If an Indian eats during Ramzan in
Arab countries, he would be flogged. So, nobody wants to be flogged and hence f
ollows the rule. The same is the case with other countries. In India, people do
not follow rules because the leadership is weak and corrupt. Yatha Raja Tatha
Praja. I am repeating it but it is like that only. We are entitled to blame th
e Govt because it is the Govt. which is responsible for governance and not ordin
ary citizens. If the head of the Govt. cannot perform his functions, then he sh
ould quit. Neither Abdul Kalam quit nor Manmohan Singh wants to quit. They are
all power hungry. And I must point out that 64% of Indians go to bed hungry, a
ccording to a report. How can Abdul Kalam expect these half hungry people to per
form their duties. They would defecate in the open because toilets are not prov
ided by the authorities. So, what secret they can maintain who defecate in the
open. I see no point in Abdul Kalam's letter.
