ACADEMIC AND STUDENT SERVICES INTERN PROGRAM
The primary responsibility of the Academic and Student Services (AS2) Intern is to serve as an academic
mentor. AS2 Interns are responsible for the development, administration, and evaluation of the
academic support programs provided to their assigned student‐athletes. The program emphasizes early
identification of academic concerns, fosters academic accountability, and monitors student‐athletes’
academic and personal transition to a competitive university environment. Additionally, AS2 Interns will
be responsible for working jointly with relevant constituent groups and individuals in the coordination of
skills development and services for student‐athletes.
The internship program is a professional practice experience that provides interns with an opportunity
to develop first‐hand knowledge of academic support services for student‐athletes, gain significant
hands‐on experience in program development, mentoring, and athletics administration. Interns receive
valuable feedback on their development and demonstration of essential professional skills. Interns will
be assigned to work directly with AS2 staff members and will be expected to:
a. Serve as an academic mentor by facilitating tutorial scheduling and monitoring academic
progress for assigned student‐athletes
b. Provide weekly updates on student‐athlete progress and quarterly written assessments of
student‐athletes’ educational strengths and weaknesses
c. With the help of the Academic Counselor, Academic Coordinator and Learning Specialist,
develop and implement an individualized academic support plan with assigned student‐
athletes. This is usually conducted during one‐on‐one sessions and may involve:
i. Providing structure, organization, time management, and planning assistance
ii. Teaching skills needed to be academically and personally successful including
critical thinking, writing, reading, note taking, and academic networking strategies
d. Work collaboratively with other professionals and staff involved in the development of
student‐athletes – i.e. coaches, compliance, and tutors
e. Participate in trainings including weekly Professional Development Sessions led by AS2 staff
f. Review student‐athlete academic progress, areas of growth and need, and strategies for
assisting student‐athletes during program planning
g. Understand learning concerns that impact student‐athletes’ academic performance and
work with students to seek appropriate resources and develop successful learning
approaches
h. Maintain confidentiality of student‐athlete records and adhere to department
confidentiality policies
i. Perform general administrative tasks as needed and serve on varied committees
