1.

Write a paragraph that identifies your persuasive stance, in other words, what position
will you take on your issue? In bold type, write your persuasive thesis statement.
(Obviously you may revise this statement as you move forward through the drafting
process.)

a. America’s Army, the US Army’s main source of recruitment nowadays, hit stores
and websites online for free; the sole purpose to getting people hooked, and
hopefully getting new recruits out of the process. While some anti-war activists
may believe that the US Army is invading on people’s privacy by using video
games, they don’t take note of the fact that the army is using a game that they
created solely for that purpose. The US Army should be able to recruit people
by using video games.

2. Make a list of five arguments that you will use to develop and support your thesis.
(Bullets are fine here. Paragraphs are not necessary.)

a. The US Army is not invading on people’s privacy by using video games

b. The Army is not being secretive by hiding behind a video gameAnti-war activists
argue that the army is instilling a false sense of what the army is about.

c. The US Army is not instilling a false sense of what the army is about

d. The Army is not trying to blur the line between the video game and real life

e. The US Army is not using video games in a way they were not intended to be
used.

3. Research one of your arguments, and cite the source you have found using MLA
structure.

a. “Bernberg said he worries the military's increased use of video games and music
videos for recruiting is misrepresenting war.”

i. Náñez, Dianna M. "Army Using Video Game as Recruiting Tool." Arizona

4. Frame an appeal (ethical, emotional or logical) and using the found research (#3),
write the paragraph that supports the argument you researched in #3. Your paragraph
structure should include an appeal (topic sentence), support and explanation offered
and substantiated by your research (use a direct quote), and then a conclusion that
draws the reader back to your thesis statement. (return statement) This should be a
fully developed, complete paragraph that could easily fit into your essay draft.

a. While the Army’s use of video games is seen by military personnel as a great way
to get new recruits, “Bernberg said he worries the military's increased use of video
games and music videos for recruiting is misrepresenting war (Náñez).” Although
the games do base themselves off of video games already released to the nation,
the US Military uses their own game, America’s Army, which was released with
the sole purpose of recruitment. Unlike most first person shooter games,
America’s Army focuses more on the training and simulation portion of the game,
not the “run and gun” style of Call of Duty, therefore limiting the differences
between the game and real life situations that a soldier might encounter. With the
fact that America’s Army was created for recruiting purposes, they should be
allowed to use it for such.

5. In one sentence, identify your audience for this essay. Remember that you must
choose a specific audience who disagrees with the stance that you will support. (#1)

a. My audience would be anyone that is anti-war or against the use of entertainment

as a way to recruit for something
