Some questions on this site are from my book, "Bible Thumper To Atheist"
It contains hundreds of the most mind boggling questions one would
ever wish to ask. It is unique in that it is set out in short interesting paragraphs
which are easy to read and understand. Many paragraphs are illustrated with
my own cartoons, depicting various biblical situations, and stories. Some are
funny, some provocative, others quite shocking

Over the years I have put many of the questions you will find here, to ministers of
religion from a wide variety of denominations. None of them could give
satisfactory answers, and those who attempted, varied with each other to a
remarkable degree. Many questions highlight the strange and weird nature of God
and his bible. The sword is mentioned extensively throughout the bible and there are
many references to God's holy men, even angels, killing women and children.
The gun could be considered a modern equivalent to the sword. God's "holy" men
were responsible for writing most of the bible. Would you read the words of a
gunman and treat them as authoritative and pledge to live your life by them?
Some people ask me: Why are you doing this, why did you write a
book, why did you create this website, why do you want to dash people's
hopes?
About me

I am a retired former senior manager in the health service. I am self taught in

theology. I am also a former "born again" Christian street preacher. I was born in
Lurgan, Northern Ireland in 1950, a child of a mixed marriage between a Catholic
and a Protestant. At the age of 18, I became an evangelical "born again" Christian.
For five years I walked the streets, knocking on doors, giving out gospel tracts and
preaching about Jesus Christ. I was a fanatical fundamentalist Christian, to such an
extent that when people saw me coming, they would say, "here comes the bible
thumper." I preached my first sermon from a church pulpit when I was 21, but within
two years I had left the church. I now regard myself as atheist regarding the biblical
God. How I changed from being a fanatical Christian to an atheist can be read in my
book, together with hundreds of powerful and provocative questions, illustrated
with my own cartoons.
As part of my research for this book, I spent several years visiting just about every
church denomination in Belfast I could think of. I spoke to, debated with, and made
friends with many preachers, pastors and ministers of religion. One of the most well
known preachers I have debated the bible with is the Rev Ian Paisley, one time, First
Minister of the Northern Ireland Assembly and leader of the Free Presbyterian
Church. We met on numerous occasions, and I have to say I found him a warm and
welcoming human being, unlike the television image he portrayed throughout the
history of the "troubles." Even though he knew I was an unbeliever, he treated me
with respect, and always endeavoured to answer my questions.
The reason I began writing this book was to compile a list of all the questions one
could think of for which there are no satisfactory answers. It was also to question the
many silly statements I hear from public representatives in respect of moral and
religious matters, especially here in Northern Ireland. Many of our political leaders
are devout Christians. Believe it or not, a substantial number of them, including the
present First Minister, believe that the earth is only 6000 years old, which is in direct
conflict with mainstream science. This mentality sometimes filters down to influence
certain political debates. It is not too many years ago that I can remember when
children's swings were locked up with huge chains on a Sunday, and leisure centres
closed because our religious politicians said it was against God's law. The only
activity not frowned upon was walking! Although children's playgrounds and leisure
centres are now open on a Sunday, there are still difficulties organising other events
on the "Sabbath." There is still an element of 'Taliban' type mentality in this country!
I do not necessarily want to turn everyone into an atheist. I know that many people
get comfort from religion. Those people will probably have no interest in reading my
book or looking at a website such as this anyway. They will remain locked in their
own little cocoon. I have no problem with that. The people I would like to influence
are those individuals who are torturing themselves because of the fear of everlasting
punishment in hell. Many of these people are putting themselves under unnecessary
duress because they feel they have sinned against some imaginary God in the sky. I
personally know such people, and because they can't get satisfactory answers from
their church or prayer, they are falling into bouts of depression and despair. They
think they are unworthy wretched sinners, when in fact, they are normal human
beings. I would like such people to realise that they can live a normal happy life,
without the fear of eternal punishment. These people have been indoctrinated from
they were little children, when they were sent to Sunday school or told they had to
confess their sins to a priest. The sooner they realise that this is the only life we
have, the sooner they can start to enjoy themselves. To punish or deprive oneself of
the things you have always enjoyed in the past, is foolish, especially if it never
harmed friends or family. Many religions throughout the world work on the same
principles as Christianity: Penance now, for the hope of greater reward in the life to
come.
Some religious families try to 'browbeat' other non- religious family members into
believing in God. For example, a good friend of mine, who had lost both her 'born
again' parents within a short period of time, was told, quite bluntly, that if she didn't
become a 'born again' Christian, she would never see her parents again. Such
actions are nothing short of psychological blackmail, even cruel. Unfortunately, in this
instance, it drove my friend to fear and depression, and then an urgency to 'get
saved.' This same individual is now in the process of being 'brainwashed' and
doesn't want to know anything about anything which casts doubt on Christianity. She
has been advised to only associate with like minded Christians. Although we are still
good friends, she has made it clear she will not discuss the bible with me. I have
accepted her wish, though she is still suffering bouts of depression and feels she has
no alternative but to believe or be 'lost' in hell.
In another instance, a father told his daughter, on the Sabbath, that she was not
allowed to turn the radio on when he was out at church, as it would be breaking
God's commandment concerning the 'Sabbath.' He had tried, without success, to get
her to go to church with him. When he came back, he immediately went to the radio
to check if it was warm, which it was, thus indicating that his daughter had indeed
turned it on. Without asking any questions, this so called Christian, grabbed his
daughter by the hair and dragged her around the house, beating her, until
she screamed to God for forgiveness. This is what religion can do to families. This is
punishment, 'God style.' This is an example of the type of behaviour which makes
me angry and is why I feel I need to do my little bit! The other people I would like to
influence are those whose actions cause splits and division among families and
friends because of their strict fundamentalist interpretation of scripture in relation to
religious differences, for example, intermarrying between Protestant and Roman
Catholics. Sometimes when a person becomes a Christian, they are told by their
church leaders, or members, that they should not be, "unequally yoked" with an
unbeliever. They are encouraged to find new friends and partners who are also
believers.
I believe if evangelical Christians can be given reason to doubt that they know, and
possess the absolute truth, they may just become a bit more tolerant towards others,
resulting in less friction in our community.

The following three cartoons are samples from my book.

Proof that Jesus was NOT God !

The above cartoon is taken from my book, under the paragraph entitled, "Can
Christians drink deadly poison without fatal consequences?"......... In the bible, Jesus
said, "and these signs WILL accompany those who believe. They will pick up snakes
with their hands and they will drink deadly poison, it will NOT hurt them. They will
place their hands on sick people and they WILL get well" Jesus spoke these words in
the book of Mark, Chapter 16, verses 17 and 18.

If Jesus really was God, and if the bible really was the word of God, then it should
still be possible to do the above today, but it doesn't happen. Some Christians in
America have died of snake bite trying to prove the above words of Jesus to be true!
The most famous being George Hensley, the founder of the modern snake handling
movement, who died of snake bite in 1955.

You might be lucky to handle snakes on a number of occasions and not get bitten,
but no Christian has, or ever will be able to drink deadly poison and live! Thus
proving that both Jesus and the bible are wrong, and cannot be the word of God.

It is interesting to note, that although there is a Pentecostal snake handling

movement, there is no, 'Pentecostal drinking of the deadly poison movement.' I
wonder why? Could it be they all died attempting to start one?
 Moses and his friends stone a man to death !

Moses was one of God's most holy and righteous men in the bible. Many of us who were brought up
to hear stories from the bible only seemed to hear the nice comforting stories. I am quite sure that
unless you have studied the bible, you will not have heard of the more ruthless side of most of the
biblical characters. Moses is a typical example. He slaughtered many, including women and children,
without mercy. This cartoon depicts just one example where he and his friends stoned a man to death.
What for, I hear you ask? Was it for thieving? No. Was it for murder? No. Was it for adultery? No! It
was for gathering sticks !... on the Sabbath. Yes ! Read it for yourself in the book of Numbers,
chapter 15, verse 32.

The bible tells us about the man. He was found gathering sticks and was brought to Moses. Moses
said that he had spoken to God and that God had told him he must die. Moses and his friends took the
man outside the camp and stoned him to death.

How can a loving God be so cruel and heartless, to have a man murdered in such a brutal, barbaric
manner, then thrown into hell for eternity, especially for such a trivial offence? What about the man's
wife and children who would have been waiting for him back home? Where was God's love,
compassion, tenderness and mercy, which, after all, is what the bible is supposed to be all about?
Don't forget, God and Jesus are supposed to be the same 'person.' Jesus told Philip in the book of
John, "Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father, (God)" and, "I am in the Father and the Father
is in me.

Can you imagine this type of behaviour occurring today? What would you think if a group of locals
from your street got together and stoned someone to death because they said God told them to do it?
 Is God Blind?

Who said you can't hide from God?

The bible tells us that no one can hide in secret places where God cannot see them,
yet when Adam and Eve hid from him in the Garden of Eden, God had to call out, "
Adam, where are you?"

Why did God not know where Adam was? If God knows everything, he should have
known where Adam was. Genesis 3:8 to 9.

In the book of Jeremiah chapter 23 verse 24, God even boasts that no one can hid
from him. He said, " Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" So
God is contradicting himself. Even if God was pretending he could not see Adam,
then that was deceitful.
 Did JesusExist ?
He was born of a virgin in a cowshed on 25th December before three shepherds and
visited by three wise men bringing frankincense and myrrh. He was God made flesh,
the saviour and the Son of God. He was credited with innumerable miracles,
including the calming of the sea. He had 12 disciples. He offered his followers the
chance to be ‘born again’. He miraculously turned water into wine at a marriage
ceremony. He rode triumphantly into town on a donkey while people waved palm
leaves to honour him. He died at Easter time as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.
On the 3rd day he rose from the dead and ascended to heaven in glory. His followers
awaited his return as judge during the last days. His death and resurrection were
celebrated by a ritual meal of bread and wine which symbolised his body and blood.
You would be forgiving for thinking I have just been speaking about Jesus Christ, but
no, the above refers to the Pagan gods of Osiris-Dionysus and Mithras who were
worshipped 300 years BEFORE Jesus.

Amazingly the similarities between these Pagan gods and Jesus Christ are generally
unknown today. In the first few centuries C.E they were obvious to Pagans and
Christians alike. The philosopher Celsus criticised Christians for trying to pass off the
Jesus story as a new revelation when it was actually an inferior imitation of Pagan
myths. The early Christians were painfully aware of such criticism. How could Pagan
myths which predate Christianity by hundreds of years have so much in common
with the life of Jesus?

Desperate to come up with an explanation the early church fathers resorted to one of
the most absurd theories ever advanced. They declared that the Devil had copied
the stories of Jesus’ life in ADVANCE of it happening and created the myths of the
Pagan Gods.

Few Christians today know that a Pagan temple once stood on the site where the
Vatican now stands. Early Christians found the sacred ceremonies practiced there so
disturbing that they tried to erase all evidence of them. One of these ceremonies
celebrated a symbolic meal of bread and wine in memory of their saviour, Mithras,
who like the later Jesus declared, “He who will not eat of my body and drink of my
blood, so that he will be made one with me and I with him, the same shall not know
salvation.” There are many more examples of similarities between the early Pagan
gods and Jesus, including speeches and parables.

Christians believe the main body of evidence for a historical Jesus comes from the
gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but these were written between 40 and
150 years after the supposed events. The difficulty is we do not know for certain who
wrote them, in fact, none of the authors make any claim to have ever met an earthly
Jesus. Add to this the fact that none of the original manuscripts exist, we only have
copies of copies. The only other main source of information about Jesus comes from
the apostle Paul, but he never met Jesus and his letters do not portray Jesus’ in a
historical setting and he makes no mention of Jesus’ life on earth. In fact nowhere do
any of the New Testament epistle writers describe a human Jesus. Neither do they
mention a Jesus from Nazareth and NONE of them quote him!

The Romans were renowned for keeping careful records of all their activities,
including executions by crucifixion but there is no mention of a man called Jesus
being executed or tried by Pontius Pilate. Twenty-seven other Roman writers and
world renowned historians who lived in the 1st century and kept meticulous records,
make no mention of Jesus either. Philo was an eminent Jewish author who lived and
wrote around 50 works that still survive today. They deal with history, philosophy and
religion and tell us much about Pontius Pilate, yet make absolutely no mention of
Jesus.

Philo’s contemporary, Justus of Tiberias was a Jew who lived near Capernaum
where Jesus was often said to have stayed. He wrote history that began with Moses
and extended to his own times but again no mention of Jesus.

The gospels portray Jesus as famous far and wide, a prophet and a healer with great
multitudes of people who knew him, including high priests and Roman authorities,
yet not one person records his existence DURING his lifetime. To illustrate this
extraordinary absence of Jesus Christ literature, just imagine going through 20 th
century literature looking for writings about Winston Churchill but unable to find a
single mention of him on earth until you examine the writings of authors who put pen
to paper 40 years after his death!

A preacher friend once asked me why I believed Julius Caesar existed, yet doubted
the existence of Jesus, I replied, for Julius Caesar there were contemporaneous
writings, coins were minted with his name and image on them, busts still survive
today. For Jesus there is absolutely nothing, outside the bible.

Amazingly, the question of an actual historical Jesus rarely confronts the religious
believer, the vast majority just accept it without question. It is extraordinary however,
that not a single historian or philosopher who lived at the alleged time of Jesus ever
mention him. There is no physical evidence to support a historical Jesus, no
artefacts, no dwelling, no works of carpentry or self written manuscripts. All claims
about Jesus derive from hearsay accounts written many years after his supposed
death.
 Crimes against Humanity
The following do not refer to some cruel and ruthless world leader,
but to the God of the Christian bible. If you find this shocking
check the references for yourself. This is the God we are all asked
to bow down and worship.

All quotes are from the King James Bible, though the following scripture references
are even more illuminating when read in the more modern New International
Bible...Point numbers 8, 9, 20,28 and 39.

1) He is responsible for murdering millions of men women and children

Ezekiel 9:6
“Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women:
but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my
sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the
house”.
Isaiah 13:18
“Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall
have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare
children”.

2) He has been responsible for stirring up war among nations

Isaiah 19:2-3
“And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight
every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour;
city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of Egypt
shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and
they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have
familiar spirits, and to the wizards”.

3) He boasts about the killing of young men

Amos 4:10
“Ihave sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your
young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your
horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your
nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD”.

4) He punished innocent children for the wrong doings of their parents

Exodus 34:7
“Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and
sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the
third and to the fourth generation”.
5) He said gluttons and drunkards should be put to death
Deuteronomy 21:20-21
“And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn
and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a
drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that
he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall
hear, and fear".

6) He cursed his followers if they did not commit bloodshed

Jeremiah 48:10
“Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed
be he that keepeth back his sword from blood”.

7) He demanded his followers to hate their parents, wives and children

Luke 14:26
“If any man come to me,and hate not his father, and mother, and wife,
and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he
cannot be my disciple”.

8) He instructed his followers not to marry foreign women

Nehemiah 13:27
“Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress
against our God in marrying strange wives?”

9) He purposely and deliberately led people astray

Isaiah 30:28
“And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of
the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a
bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err”.

10)He is often jealous

Deut. 5:9
“Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the
LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers

11)He has a bad temper

“And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even
he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and
the adulteress shall surely be put to death”.

30)He ordered the death penalty for working on a Saturday

36)His followers once killed 70 men and put their heads in baskets and left
them on the city streets

 MURDERERS IN HEAVEN

THEIR VICTIMS IN
HELL
According to fundamentalist evangelical Christians, those of us who are not saved
are going to spend eternity in hell when we die. We often hear them shouting at us in
the centre of our towns and cities. They quote verses from the bible to support their
beliefs, such as, ‘Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God,’
etc., John 3:3-5. Such Christians believe that no matter what your sins have been in
the past, they will all be forgiven once you are, ’born again’. You will then go to
heaven to be with Jesus when you die. This means that if a murderer converts and
becomes a born again Christian, he will go to heaven when he dies. On the other
hand, the person he murdered, who may have been a good person and never
harmed anyone, will go to hell, if he has not been converted to this brand of
Christianity. I was taught that
hell was for murderers and thieves etc., but when I grew up and read the bible for
myself, I discovered that this was not always the case. The bible tells us that
salvation is free and offered as a remedy for sin. All you have to do is believe and
accept Jesus as your saviour prior to dying and your sins will be forgiven and you will
go to be with Jesus for eternity. You may be the nicest person in the world, always
turning the other cheek and giving to charity etc., but if you don’t believe in Jesus,
you are going to hell. Acts 4:12 states, ‘Salvation is found in no one only Jesus, for
there is NO OTHER name given to man by which we must be saved.’ It is clear from
this that followers of other religions such as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists etc will also
go to hell!

On the 10th May 1994 one of the worlds most notorious serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer
became a ‘born again’ Christian and was baptised. He had been convicted of
murdering 15 people. After he had horrifically killed them, he chopped them up and
stored their body parts in his freezer. He even ate some of his victims and kept their
heads as trophies. Later, while serving life in prison, he was murdered by two
inmates. According to the bible and the words of Jesus, Jeffrey Dahmer is now in
heaven. Jesus said, ‘he that believes and is baptised, shall be saved. No might be,
but SHALL be. Mark 16 v16. The bible could not make it any clearer. Can you
imagine dying and going to heaven, only to find that Jeffrey Dahmer is living in the
mansion next to you? His victims were from a variety of backgrounds, including
other religions, but because they were not born again Christians, for whatever
reason, they are now in hell, according to fundamentalist Christian teaching. One of
the best places to be in the USA in order to get to heaven, is on Death Row! They
know the exact date and time of their execution. All they have to do is accept Jesus
as their saviour. Some states even employ ministers to help convert these inmates
As if that wasn’t bad enough, there are many other murderers and violent rapists
who became born again Christians shortly before they were executed. They too will
be in heaven! Many of their victims were good decent people of various religions,
some of whom may have believed in Jesus, others who didn’t or never got the
chance. The latter are now in hell according to the bible! Where is the justice in
that? It is even possible that Adolf Hitler could be in heaven! No one knows what
went on in the last few hours of his life, before he died. If he had got down on his
knees and asked Jesus for forgiveness before he died, then according to the bible,
he too would be in heaven. The six million Jews on the other hand, whom he was
responsible for murdering, are most likely in hell, since most of them would not have
believed that Jesus was the Son of God.

It is ironic that the author of this tract, who never murdered , thieved, or harmed
anyone , is often shunned, scoffed at and treated as ‘demonic,’ for daring to publish
a tract such as this, while ex- murderers, and thieves are welcomed with open arms.
How can we believe in a book which allows murderers into heaven and throws their
victims into hell to face eternal punishment?
