The art of Polyrealism seeks its inspiration in other realities,
some different from ours in only one tiny detail, others in
two, then more, up to the barely imaginable; bringing them
to us to compare, contemplate and conquer. This body of
work by Poul A. Constinsky is concentrated on one card
deck, played by incomprehensible entities—some call them
gods—across the universes and times, with unimaginable,
but modest stakes in the game. Each card of the deck is a
window into some reality, the reality which contributes the
aspect of its archetype that is necessary to advance the
hand of the player. The process of trying to understand the
rules and the flow of the game is rumored to constitute the
highest meaning of human life.

and artwork that combines modern lines and mountain
lifestyles. Unique and handcrafted, these furnishings create

Ukiyo-e or ‘pictures of the transient world of everyday
life,’ was pop art that existed long before any modern
artistic movement. At the height of its popularity in the 18th
Century, these Japanese woodblock prints portrayed a new
urban lifestyle available to the growing middle class. As an
homage to the spirit of Ukiyo-e, Jonathan Wakuda Fischer’s
work incorporates these same elements of beauty, fashion
and leisure with a fusion of anachronistic content.

Ballard photographer Robert Shackelford loves hiking
the San Juan Islands with his dog, exploring in-between
patterns and randomness. His work captures shells and
ocean pebbles, dark tidewaters and island landscapes. In
this collection, minimal focus and vibrant colors highlight
images of Seattle and the San Juans.

Artist Stella DiToma is a self-declared ephemera addict,
unable to pass up a colorful paper bag, old photo or odd
object. Even your cocktail napkin isn’t safe. Her original
work, sold under the name Sophisticated Funk, also
helps fund a favorite charity. A breast cancer survivor,
DiToma donates 10% of her profits to the Susan G.
Koman Foundation.

Artist Tom Walko has been building birdhouses for 8 years,
incorporating unusual materials and techniques to capture
the look and charm of actual buildings, while still being fully
functional. This more recent work follows many years of
creating models of ships and boats. Walko’s latest series
of rowboats displays the beauty of different woods. Unlike
more delicate models, his pieces are meant to be touched
and enjoyed.

It’s a special evening dedicated to raising funds for Japan!
On the walls is featured work by Bill Zama and Jocelyn
Badali, plus several donated pieces from local artists,
which will be included in a silent auction, along with
Root’s services. Live music by the Hank Hirsch Group and
delectable tapas from local restaurants round out the event.
All proceeds go to Direct Relief International.

Self-taught Ballard artist Shelly Engels exhibits her
architectural photographs on aluminum. Using both film
and digital media to create her beautiful textural pieces,
Engels pushes the elements of traditional photography.
The use of aluminum instead of photo paper provides a
sheen and layers of depth. The metal also enhances the
surface inequalities of the architectural relief. View these
intriguing and beautiful photographs and meet the artist.

Exploring new mediums, Cole Blevins recently began
working with paper cuts after studying how basic shapes
can be combined and (re)arranged to create rich, multi-
dimensional imagery. In the Moment is his first body of
work using paper cuts in an attempt to suspend time and
to preserve and immortalize glimpses of the past. This
show is portraiture of moments, unfinished narratives.
The poetic deconstruction and reconstruction of familial
history is documented and pieced together, nostalgically
illuminating and preserving glimpses of stories now and
stories as of yet untold.

Elizabeth Van Duine creates her unique pieces using
a Japanese paper cutting technique called Kirie. Each
image consists of two layers. An initial black line drawing
is cut from a single sheet of paper and then completed by
pasting cut pieces of art paper on the back. The image on
the top paper cut comes to life when color and light come
into play from behind.

from Santiago, Dominican Republic. Champion, award-
winning artist Manuel de Jesus Jimenez creates large and
small masks in the Pepinera, Joyera and Fantasia styles.

Sarah Everett is a painter of portraits and calligraphic lines
currently inspired by feathers, bones, branches, Arabic
script and Art Deco. Re-purposed wood is often featured,
making the discarded beautiful. Following time-honored
traditions of simple woodworking, the glow of the wood
grain itself becomes an essential part her paintings, which
are manipulated with stains, carvings and texture.

Narboo is a local artist that loves the mountains and the city
and is inspired by both. He loves nature and animals and
this is reflected in his work, which rarely features people.

Featuring Vistas, a new body of large works on
paper by artist Warren Dykeman. From late 2010, these
paintings explore industrial architecture, stylized figures
and typography. The paintings are fusions of objects
pulled from various sources and mediums, including digital
printing, drawings and paintings on translucent mulberry
paper. Worked in succession, as one painting is finished
a new base sheet of paper is tacked up to be influenced
by the those that came before.
