Power Systems and FACTS Simulation using PSCAD –

An Introductory Course

Date: 5th Oct – 8th Oct, 2009
ECTS: 4

Introduction:
PSCAD® is a time domain simulation tool for studying transient behavior of electrical networks.
It is very useful in a simulation study of power system and power electronic design as well as the
study and analysis of power quality. Large variety of power system components are available
and new components if required can be developed using PSCAD script or programming
languages like FORTRAN and C.
The purpose of this course is to a training of PSCAD and its applications in power systems and
power electronic applications in power systems. Simulation of FACTS devices in power systems
will be introduced. Some fundamental concepts of power system and power electronics and their
simulation will be discussed. The level is kept introductory so that beginners can benefit. The
course will comprise of tutorials followed by workshop and assignments.
All participants have to install the software PSCAD V4.20. In absence of a formal license for all
the participants, trial licenses from HVDC research Centre, Manitoba will be used. More
information about PSCAD trial license will be provided later.
