The Basket Block

This block requires templates and exact measurement for the pieces.
Pay close attention to your ruler before making a cut.

****Always add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each pattern piece be-
fore cutting.****

This is the Basket block. It is

the #8 block in the Sampler
Quilt.

12” total block size finished,

12 1/2” unfinished

This block is constricted different than all the other Sampler Quilt blocks; it is
built from the middle out towards the edges.
There is also an appliqué handle that is “slipped” into a seam.
Go slowly and read each instruction carefully.

 Basket Block

CUT SIZES:
3 7/8” square, cross cut (A)
3 7/8” square, cross cut (B)
3 1/2” square (B)
9 7/8” square, cross cut (C )
6 7/8” square, cross cut (C )
3 1/2” by 6 1/2” rectangles (C )
Trapezoid pattern piece (A)

Steps:
1. Select the background fabric (C ). Cut one square measuring 9 7/8”. Cross cut
this into two half square triangles. Use one for the block; the second is a
scrap fabric.
2. Continuing to use fabric (C ), cut one square measuring 6 7/8”. Cross cut this
into two half square triangles. Use one for the block, the second is a scrap
fabric.
3. Continuing to use fabric (C ), cut two rectangles measuring 3 1/2” by 6 1/2”.
4. Select the basket center fabric (B). Cut one square measuring 3 1/2”.
5. Continuing to use fabric (B), cut one square measuring 3 7/8”. Cross cut this
into two half square triangles. Use one for the block, the second is a scrap
fabric.
6. Select the basket outside fabric (A). Cut one square measuring 3 7/8”. Cross
cut this into two half square triangles.
7. Continuing to use fabric (A), cut one left facing and one right facing trapezoid
using the trapezoid pattern as your guide.
8. Continuing to use fabric (A), cut one basket handle. Use the pattern piece and
trace the shape onto freezer paper (reverse the pattern before tracing). This
will be your guide to cut the handle.. (Remember to add seam allowance)
9. Lay out all of the cut pieces on your table to assemble the block design.

10. Take the handle and fold the seam allowance over the paper and press. This
will create a smooth fabric fold line that can be appliquéd to the background
block.
11. Take the background half triangle (C ) that was from the 9 7/8” block. Place
the basket handle on top and stitch it down.
12. Use tiny stitches to applique the handle by hand, hiding
each in the “edge” of the fold.

13. (Alternate) Machine stitch the handle in place.

14.Lay the left facing trapezoid on the cutting mat. Place the half square triangle
(B) next to the short side as shown in the photo. Attach using a 1/4” seam
allowance.

15. Lay the right facing trapezoid on the cutting mat. Place the square (B) next
to the straight end as shown in the photo. Attach using a 1/4” seam allowance.

16.Lay the trapezoid units on the cutting mat to form the bottom of the basket
design. Stitch these two unit together using a 1/4” seam allowance.

17. Lay the trapezoid unit and the handle unit on the cutting mat. Pin these units
together, and stitch using a 1/4” seam allowance. This forms the center of the
block.

18. Sew the half square triangles (A) to the rectangles (C ) as shown the photo.
(Note that the triangles are sewn on opposite sides of the rectangles.)

19. Lay the center basket unit and the rectangle units on the cutting mat to
match the design of the block. Sew the rectangle units to the basket center,
using a 1/4” seam allowance.

20. After both rectangle sides have

been attached to the basket, stitch
the half square triangle (C ) to the
bottom right corner of the block.

21. Press lightly. The block should

measure 12 1/5”.

freezer paper. Cut the paper
pattern exactly this size, without
any seam allowance.
