My work in graduate school was towards a Masters in microbiology, with an emphas

is in medical laboratory science. Completing the research for a Masters in micr

obiology at the same time as performing the necessary work for Clinical Laborato
ry Science program at Idaho State University was a demanding, yet rewarding expe
rience (Graduation date: August). I performed the necessary work to allow me to
complete a Masters in two years, as well as be successful in the Clinical Labor
atory Science (CLS) program. The Masters and the CLS program required me to mul
titask, and utilize my time wisely.
My Masters project was characterizing a novel virus that infects a single celled
organism Halobacterium salinarum spp. NRC-1. Throughout my project I gained th
e knowledge to perform PCR (polymerase chain reaction), bacterial cloning, Weste
rn blots, DNA extractions, gel electrophoresis, genetic material digestions, SDS
gels, designing primers, designing plasmid expression vectors, and overlays (am
ong other fundamental, microbiology, molecular biology, and virology techniques)
. I truly enjoy microbiology research, and I have a great deal of respect for a
ll of the sciences. As an undergrad I performed research in a lab that worked w
ith the infectious fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. I presented a research post
er at the Idaho Academy of Science (Boise Idaho), and the Undergraduate research
symposium (Idaho State University). The research that I performed on Blastomyc
es dermatitidis was published in the Idaho Academy of Science (peer reviewed).
My time spent at Idaho State University (both as an undergraduate and graduate s
tudent) has provided me with the necessary knowledge, and skill set to perform e
xperiments both in a research laboratory and clinical laboratory. I have always
enjoyed taking on new challenges and setting new goals for myself, as well as p
ushing myself when given the opportunity.
