Norton Healthcare, Louisville, KY, Louisville, KY, July 2006 to May 2010
Norton Healthcare is the Louisville area's leading hospital and health care syst
em (44 percent market share) and third largest private employer. The not-for-pro
fit system includes five large hospitals in Louisville, 11 Norton Immediate Care
Centers, 10,900 employees, nearly 380 employed medical providers at more than 5
0 locations, and some 2,300 total physicians on its medical staff.
Director, Human Resources
Strategic HR Business Partner to internal business partners within Norton Health
care. Responsibilities also included developing a strategic direction and design
of system HR operations and practices including HR policies and procedures, Rew
ard and Recognition Programming, Relocation, FMLA Administration and Performance
Management.
Key Accomplishments:
- Project Lead for on-line performance management system, meeting key deadlines
for online module implementation roll out in March 2010. Project savings for the
company for developing module and on-line training in-house was 300K.
- Strategically facilitated organizational changes for numerous system departmen
ts and facilities. Accomplishments include: Leadership and organizational struct
ure of the Norton Cancer Institute (NCI), development of NCI's Cancer Prevention
and Early Detection Program; Redesign of Louisville Oncology Research Operation
s within the Norton Cancer Institute; Leadership Re-design of the Norton Healthc
are Research Administration Program (NHORA); Clinical Pathology Associates leade
rship re-structure and department re-organization; Marketing Department re-desig
n and leadership structure; and Audubon Hospital nurse leadership re-structure.
All have led to more operational efficiency, growth and/ or increased profitabi
lity.
- Developed, designed and implemented Norton Healthcare's Reward & Recognition P
rogram which included the redesign of programs for employee service and 1 year e
mployee service to target retention with first year employees. Program also incl
uded training for all leadership within Norton Healthcare as well as the develop
ment of a total rewards program for performance based on the organizations' miss
ion, vision and values.
- Developed and implemented a Turnover Action Plan document to assist managers w
ith strategically approaching turnover within their department and/or facility.
As a result, achieved 10% reduction in voluntary turnover both at System Service
s and at Audubon Hospital.
- Part of the development team of the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program at Audubon Hospital
, which created a structured opportunity to recognize and reward clinical suppor
t staffs who provide direct patient care, increasing retention efforts within th
is high risk group. Since its inception, program efforts have led to over a 50%
reduction in turnover in the clinical support staff areas.
- Successfully headed off a union campaign organization attempt at Audubon Hospi
tal resulting in maintaining a non-union work environment free from third party
intervention.
- Successfully developed Remote Work structure and policy for the system bringin
g more creative and flexible solutions to the workforce.
- Created and developed a business case that implemented system-wide intranet ac
cessibility of HR policies and procedures and employee handbook to all employees
of NHC, resulting in accessibility and transparency and reduced production cost
s resulting in a savings of 50 to 75K.
- Led RFP initiatives: outsourced Relocation Services for NHC, bringing more of
a streamlined approach to the process and outsourced the company branded logo st
ore (N-Store) resulting in a 200k reduction in inventory to zero inventory on th
e books for NHC.
Sara Lee, Food and Beverage, Louisville, Kentucky, 2005-2006
Based in Downers Grove, Ill., Sara Lee Corporation is a global manufacturer and
marketer of high-quality, brand-name products for consumers throughout the world
. The organization based out of Louisville is part of Sara Lee's US Fresh Bakery
Division.
Manager, Human Resources, Kentucky/Indiana Sales Zone (DSD)
HR Business Partner to the Zone Vice President of the KY/IN Sales Zone and 18 Di
strict Sales Managers. Responsible for management of three (3) direct reports an
d all employee relations and labor relations within the Kentucky/Indiana Sales Z
one which the territory consisted in 5 states: Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Miss
ouri and Ohio. Responsibilities included: oversight for 15 collective bargaining
agreements, along with non-union employee relations initiatives in Non-union te
rritories, Talent Acquisition, Retention, Talent Management, Talent Review Proce
ss (TRP), Performance Management, Strategic Planning, Affirmative Action Plan (A
AP), Diversity initiatives, Training and Development, Safety, Worker's Compensat
ion and Benefits Administration. Also assisted with New Market ventures with Sar
a Lee Food Beverage, assessing talent and staffing start-up facilities in the Ea
st Region.

Key Accomplishments:
- Developed and implemented Labor Strategy for the KY/IN Sales Zone, putting for
th cost reduction initiatives that were brought forward to the President of the
US Fresh division of Sara Lee Food and Beverage. Successfully negotiated Collect
ive Bargaining Agreements and arbitrated cases bringing more flexibility to the
operations within the sales zone.
- Successfully staffed and opened new market facilities in Orlando, Florida and
Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio overseeing human resource responsibility for those o
perations.

and Beverage HR Summit, March 2006

- Assisted in implementing an initiative to outsource security at Jeffboat LLC,
ACL's manufacturing facility, resulting in a cost savings of 100K annually.
Traffic Manager: Distribution Services and Liquid Services, American Commercial
Barge Line Responsibilities included: Planning, projecting and coordinating comp
any assets (barges) in various river segments throughout the country weighing in
cost benefit analysis with each move. Managed accounts for a customer base rang
ing from Sunoco, Bayer, Lyondell, PPG and Cendian to Cargill, US Steel, Bunge, A
K Steel and IKEC Coal. Maintained vendor and customer relations, serving as the
first line of contact for any logistical or customer service issues to maintain
customer satisfaction with the companies current client base. Sales person for b
rokered barges to outside clientele to fill tow slots and add margin to the bott
om line. Managed dispatchers, serving as a team lead to issues within or outside
of the business operations. Served as weekend system planner for the entire bar
ging system overseeing all operational issues with the system on all river segme
nts, which could include developing tow, to dealing with coast guard issues or c
oncerns.
Key Accomplishments:
- Led and implemented six sigma projects on turn around time of liquid barges, r
esulting in process improvement initiatives within the company's fleet facility
interchanges cutting down cycle time between liquid tows at our fleet facilities
.
- Developed and implemented six sigma project with E.I DuPont to identify invent
ory control issues which resulted in cost savings for both E.I. DuPont and ACL o
n asset management. ($365 - $550 a day savings per barge at ACL).
- Facilitated and led operational initiative in securing chemical business with
Bayer which resulted in three (3) million dollars in additional revenue to the c
ompany.
- Selected and participated in the Academy for emerging leaders at ACL.
Employee Relations Representative, Jeffboat LLC
Responsibilities included: staffing, recruitment, retention and employee and lab
or relations for Jeffboat's 900+ employee manufacturing shipyard.
Key Accomplishments:
- Developed and implemented New Hire and Re-Hire Hiring Process.
- Created and increased market and territorial base recruitment efforts througho
ut an eleven (11) county area utilizing media, print, community agencies and gra
ss roots level organizations to spread the Jeffboat brand.
- Led initiative to review appropriate background testing for positions at Jeffb
oat LLC. This initiative resulted in cost savings of 10-15K annually as unrelate
d screenings were identified and stopped.
- Successfully developed and implemented employee profiles on key positions with
in the yard to assist in the selection process and with retention efforts.
- Designed, developed and implemented Jeffboat's first employee publication call
ed the "Newsletter" to assist in bridging the gap between salaried and hourly un
ion employees by providing information on current business trends and company ev
ents.
