My friends, thank you! See you soon?

Every day I realise just how lucky I am to have such a fantastic job. Interviewing, editing, lay-
out work, etc, is a great way to exercise the grey matter and be creative at the same time.
I also enjoy the actual content of my work, from the appeal of the mechanical goings-on inside
valves to the complexities of fieldbuses for actuators. But there’s one aspect which really makes
my job unique – the people I get to meet and work with.
My colleagues for a start – a truly unique blend of ages, nationalities, skills and outlooks, work-
ing together to produce an exciting range of magazines, shows and websites. Then there’s all
the external contacts who, even though we often never meet face-to-face, kindly contribute to
Valve World shows: a great venue to meet old
Valve World in one way or another. For example, they may send in press releases, submit tech-
friends! (David is in the middle of this photo.)
nical papers, e-mail ideas for future reports or just give me a call to put forward suggestions for
improvements. I must definitely mention the people who have kindly received me at their offices and factories over the years. I’ve always
been amazed at how willing they were to find time to explain how valves are made or work, what their plants do, how they have solved flow
control problems, etc. To all these people, the friends I have made during the years in this business, I would just like to say a heartfelt thank
you for your continued support. I look forward to working with you all for a long time to come.
The best thing about friendships is being able to meet up every now and then, discuss old times and muse about the future. With that in
mind, I’d like to close by mentioning the flagship event in the Valve World calendar, our Conference & Expo. You’ve probably seen plenty
of advance information on this show but, just in case, it’s scheduled for week 46, in Maastricht, the Netherlands. You’ll find full details in
this magazine, starting on page 69. It promises to be a real meeting point again for the flow control sector so I hope you will be able to

Refinery contract Gas from Ghana

Austria’s OMV AG has awarded a USD 15 mil-
lion contract to Fluor Corp. for engineering, pro-
curement, and construction management servic-
es on the upgrade of OMV’s clean diesel and
gasoline units at its 208,600 b/d refinery at
Schwechat, near Vienna, Austria. Fluor will mod-
ify two large columns and compressors, optimise
a naphtha treater and build a new reactor and
dehexaniser for OMV. “The contact calls for the
revamping of OMV’s units to produce clean
diesel with lower sulphur content and clean
gasoline with lower aromatics content for use in
automobiles to comply with new clean fuels reg-
ulations,” Fluor said. The project, which is slated
to be completed in March 2004, will be carried
out through Fluor’s Haarlem, the Netherlands,
office. This project marks the first time that Fluor
has performed construction management servic-
es in Austria, the company said.
Project Preview
Campos Basin
Francisco Gros, the president of Petrobras, said that
the total investments in the Campos Basin by the
year 2005 will be USD 17.6 billion. Out of that total,
USD 8.3 billion will be used for 10 new drilling plat-
forms for deep-water operations. According to
Agencia Brasil, Campos Basin (located off the coast
of the state of Espirito Santo, just north of Rio de
Janeiro state) has been in operation for 25 years.
The Government of Ghana has signed a pe-
troleum production agreement with Tano En-
ergy Ltd, for gas production at the Tano oil-
fields offshore in the Western Region. It is es-
timated that the gas produced will assist in
the production of as much as 250MW of elec-
tricity. The Ghana National Petroleum Corpo-
ration (GNPC) is tasked with the full imple-
mentation of the terms of the agreement. It is
expected that USD 100 million will be invest-
ed in the exploitation process.
The supply of gas is expected to start early in
2003. The Tano fields were discovered by
Philips Petroleum between 1978 to 1981. Ad-
ditional studies notably by ARCO, Petro
Canada and Braspetro have established and
confirmed the proven reserves and production
potential of the Tano fields.

Ethanol plants
Thailand’s Ministry of Industry has granted li-
censes to eight local companies to build crop-
based ethanol plants. The eight companies will
use mainly tapioca and molasses, a sugar-cane
by-product, to extract ethanol. “About 60-70%
of ethanol would be derived from tapioca,” said
Dr Nattapon Nattasomsomboon, Director of
National Ethanol Committee, a division of the
ministry. Total output from the eight companies
is expected to be around 1.5 million litres a day
(9434 b/d). By 2004, Thailand’s ethanol produc-
tion is expected to reach 495 million litres a
year.

Singapore
Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore (Private)
Limited (PCS) (Jurong Island, Singapore) is cur-
rently working on the design for a new propy-
lene unit addition at their existing site on Jurong
Island in Singapore and a decision should be
reached by the end of this year
Imperial plant at
Ontario refinery
Imperial Oil Ltd (Canada), is planning to build a
CAD 120 million power plant to provide elec-
tricity for its oil refinery and petrochemical
complex in Sarnia, Ontario. Imperial, majority
owned by US oil supermajor Exxon Mobil
Corp., said detailed engineering was under way
for the 90MW gas-fired co-generation plant,
which will send electricity and steam to the re-
fining and plastics operation. Construction was
scheduled to begin late this year with a planned
start-up of April 2004, Imperial said. It has filed
a study of environmental, economic and social
impacts with Ontario’s environment ministry.
With a capacity of more than 120,000 barrels a
day, Sarnia is the second biggest of Imperial’s
four refineries. The petrochemical operations
produce 250,000 tonnes of ethylene and
390,000 tonnes of polyethylene a year. The co-
generation plant will use natural-gas-fired tur-
bines to simultaneously produce electricity and
steam, using approximately 50% less energy
than conventional methods.

Monomer plant in
China?
South Korea’s LG Chem is studying whether to
build a vinyl chloride monomer plant in China
to complement its proposed ethylene dichloride
plant in Australia, a company source has said.
The VCM plant in China would be a primary
outlet for the EDC produced in Australia. LG
and Australia’s Cheetham Salt Ltd are to build a
300,000 mt/yr EDC joint venture plant at Glad-
stone in Queensland, to be on line by late
2005. The plant would also produce caustic
soda as a by-product. The EDC plant is to
source all its feedstock locally. LG and
Cheetham decided to locate the plant at Glad-
stone due to the availability of cheap electricity
and proximity to two large caustic soda con-
sumers, namely Queensland Alumina and Co-
malco Alumina. LG is to have a 55% share in
the USD 200 million EDC and caustic soda joint
venture plant at Gladstone, and Cheetham Salt
Ltd a 35% stake. The firms are seeking a third
party to take up the remaining 15% share in
the project.
Compression deal
BG Tunisia, a unit of BG Group PLC, has award-
ed a USD 70 million contract to Bechtel Group
Inc. for the installation of a compression pack-
age on its Miskar natural gas field in the
Mediterranean Gulf of Gabes, 125km off
Tunisia. Bechtel will modify the Miskar platform
and instal a single, 20-MW, gas turbine-driven
compressor, which is to be operational in 2004.
The upgrade, BG said, will allow peak produc-
tion from the field to be maintained for an ad-
ditional 5 years.
The revamp will also increase the total recovery
of gas from the field, BG said. BG, under a
long-term contract with Tunisia’s state gas and
electricity company Societe Tunisienne de
l’Electricite et du Gaz, supplies more than 205
MMscfd of gas. Siemens Demag Delaval Turbo-
machinery Ltd has been contracted to build the
compressor package, which will be housed in a
1600-tonne module. The package will be in-
stalled in a single lift onto the top deck of the
platform. Construction is planned to start in
March 2003. Rolls Royce Energy Systems, a
unit of Rolls Royce PLC, will provide the gas
turbine.

UK LNG terminal
Utility Lattice Group Plc is planning to build
what would be Britain’s only operating termi-
nal to process imported liquefied natural gas
(LNG), in an effort to meet the country’s
growing energy needs. The terminal would be
built on an already existing LNG storage site
on the River Medway in SE England and could
come into operation by the end of 2004 with
an estimated capacity of 12-18 million cubic
metres per day, Lattice spokesman Jim Willison
said. Willison declined to disclose the estimat-
ed cost for the project but said it would be
below the average USD 250 million it general-
ly costs to build a new LNG terminal from
scratch. The LNG scheme was subject to local
council approval as well as regulatory and
planning requirements and commercial agree-
ments.
BP’s LNG export
plan for Iran
UK oil multinational BP is behind plans to build a
massive liquefied natural gas terminal linked to
offshore developments in southern Iran to ship 8
million tonnes per year of offshore gas to India
and the rest of the world. BP has completed a
GBP 10 million study with Indian energy giant
Reliance and Iran’s National Iranian Oil Company
to build the two-train facility and develop off-
shore production in the huge South Pars gas
field. The consortium, with BP and Reliance
holding a 25% stake and National Iranian 50%,
plans to pipe gas from the South Pars offshore
field to a new facility at the Persian Gulf port of
Assaluyeh in the Pars Special Energy Economic
Zone. BP and its partners hope to strike an
agreement early next year to ship the gas to
India, with other Asian destinations and Europe
also under consideration.

Saudi Aramco plans
Foster Wheeler Ltd has announced that its sub-
sidiary, Foster Wheeler Energy Limited has been
awarded a project management services contract
for two distillate hydrotreaters and power co-
generation plants by Aramco Overseas Compa-
ny. Foster Wheeler’s scope of work associated
with the hydrotreaters is to provide engineering
and project management services for facilities at
Saudi Aramco’s Riyadh and Yanbu refineries. This
work follows Saudi Arabia’s plans to improve the
ambient air quality for the most populated cities,
Riyadh, Jeddah and Makkah, by switching to
lower-sulphur diesel fuel in 2006.Foster Wheeler
has been contracted to upgrade the mid-distil-
lates to low-sulphur diesel at both refineries. The
facilities will enable the refineries initially to pro-
duce 500 ppm and eventually 50 ppm sulphur
content diesel.In addition, Foster Wheeler is to
provide engineering and project management
services for the power co-generation plants, the
first of which will be at Berri.
Pennsylvania
power
Foster Wheeler Ltd has announced that its sub-
sidiary, Foster Wheeler Power Group Inc., has
been awarded a contract valued at approximately
USD 200 million by LMB Funding Limited Part-
nership, to engineer, procure and construct a
nominal 600 MW capacity combined-cycle natu-
ral gas-fired power plant. Construction is under-
way at the Lower Mount Bethel project located in
Bangor, Pennsylvania. The project will include two
gas-turbine generators and one steam-turbine
generator designed for high efficiency operation
with very low levels of emissions from the com-
bustion process. The power island turbine genera-
tor and steam generator equipment have been
pre-purchased by the plant owner and delivery of
components has already begun. Operation of the
plant is scheduled to begin at the end of 2003.
Trinidad refinery
The Trinidad and Tobago government has grant-
ed conditional approval for the construction and
operation of a 224,000 bpd full-conversion ex-
port oil refinery and ancillary infrastructure.It is
expected to cost USD 2 billion, with the targeted

completion date yearend 2005. If constructed,
the refinery would be one of the largest in the
world, with a 17.4 million billion terminal and
port facilities. Already state-owned National Gas
Co. of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd. (NGC) has agreed
to provide the refinery with 50 MMscfd of natu-
ral gas, while a site close to the Atlantic LNG ex-
port plant has been identified for the refinery.
This would be the country’s third oil refinery. The
government is already negotiating for a fourth
train.
Technip busy in ME
Technip-Coflexip will bring online a number of
projects covering a range of energy and chemical
plant technologies in the Middle East by 2005.
One project awarded to the company by the
Abu Dhabi Refining Company is a USD 480 mil-
lion lump sum turn-key contract to expand and
modernise existing facilities at the Ruwais refin-
ery and to add new units for the production of
unleaded gasoline and low-sulphur gas oil. The
project is scheduled for completion in 2005. In a
50/50 joint venture with Snamprogetti, Technip-
Coflexip is also designing and constructing a
USD 770 million fertiliser complex in Oman on a
lump sum turn-key contract from Oman-India
Fertiliser Company for completion in mid-2005.
The complex, located at Sur, will be the world’s
largest grassroot fertiliser plant.Another turn-key
contract, for completion by Technip-Coflexip in
late 2005, was awarded by Saudi Aramco for the
expansion of the Berri gas plant to handle addi-
tional output of sour gas from the Qatif field
now under development. A low-pressure gas
sweetening unit, two new sulphur recovery
units, a new feed gas compressor, the revamp
and capacity increase of the existing propane re-
frigeration unit, and the upgrade and expansion
of utility systems will be supplied.
Power plants in
Australia
AlintaGas Ltd (Perth, Australia) plans to con-
struct up to 1200 MW of new power plants at a
cost of USD 850 million by 2005. AlintaGas re-
cently announced a Memorandum of Under-
standing (MOU) with Alcoa World Alumina Aus-
tralia to develop three 120 MW natural gas fired
co-generation power plants at Alcoa’s three alu-
mina refineries in Western Australia Province.

DSM investment
Royal DSM (The Netherlands) will invest an ini-
tial USD 30 million into DSM Nanjing Chemi-
cal, a caprolactam joint venture in which DSM
Fibre Intermediates will take a 60% stake and
China Petroleum & Chemical’s Sinopec Nanjing
Chemical Industries the remaining 40% inter-
est. DSM and Sinopec signed the founding
agreement to start the joint venture, which
“will give DSM a manufacturing presence for
caprolactam in the fast growing Chinese and
Asian markets,” said Dick Venderbos, president
of DSM Fibre Intermediates. The DSM Nanjing
Chemical Co (DNCC) plant has a current ca-
pacity of 60,000 metric tons caprolactam and
started production in 1993. DNCC will expand
production to 140,000 TPA in the years to
come, DSM said.
Russia invests in
Kuwait
Russian firms will participate in developing
Kuwait’s oilfields, the nation’s energy minister has
said. Energy Minister Igor Yusufov, heading the
Russian side in the talks, said firms including Sib-
neft and Lukoil were preparing to work on four oil-
fields in northern Kuwait. The investment would
amount to USD 7 billion. The announcement came
a day after Russia said it was preparing to sign
USD 40 billion worth of contracts with Iraq.
Clean fuels plans
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is providing engi-
neering and design, procurement, and construc-
tion assistance services for a Valero Energy Cor-
poration project in Paulsboro, NJ. Officials target
completion of the engineering and design phase
by the second quarter 2003. The project, which
supports Valero’s ongoing clean fuels initiative,
consists of the conversion of the existing Semi-
Regeneration Platinum Reforming Unit at
Valero’s Paulsboro Refinery into an FCC Gasoline
Desulphurisation Unit (FGDU). Additionally, Ja-
cobs will provide detailed engineering and de-
sign, procurement, and construction assistance
for the utilities and infrastructure to support the
FGDU and a Continuous Catalyst Reformer, also
a part of Valero’s clean fuels initiative.

Texas refinery
Cyntech Fuels of Chambers County LLC, a whol-
ly owned subsidiary of Cyntech Technology Inc.,
has awarded an engineering services and project
management contract to Eagle-Pro Engineering
Inc. of Beaumont, Texas, USA, for the renovation
and construction activities related to the hydro-
carbon processing facility located in Mt. Belvieu,
Texas. The facility, an inactive refinery and tank
storage farm, was recently purchased by a Geor-
gia investment group for the benefit of Cyntech
Fuels. The refinery renovation project is estimat-
ed to cost approximately USD 25 million.
Anadarko plans to
invest in Algeria
Anadarko Petroleum Corp. is to invest USD 160
million in Algeria this year, according to the
OPEC news agency. The investment would be
divided between hydrocarbon exploration, ap-
praisal and development in Algeria. It is under-
stood that work would mainly be concentrated

said that the USD 8.65 million contract was
awarded to Colombia’s Esguem and Russia’s En-
ergomash. Spain’s Ingehidro Ltda also partici-
pated in the bidding, officials said. EEPPM Gen-
eral Manager Ivan Correa Calderon said the
consortium would provide generation and con-
trol equipment to La Herradura and La Vuelta
hydroelectric plants in mid-2003. The plants

equipment will be manufactured in Mexico,
Russia and Ukraine, according to EEPPM, which
provides electric, water and telecommunications
services in Medellin.

Uzbekistan. The Russian business daily Vremya
reported that Itera and Lukoil will each own
45% of the joint venture. Uzbekistan’s state-
owned oil and gas company, Uzbekneftegaz,
will own 10% and it will hold a license to de-
velop the gas regions Bukhara and Gissar.
Lukoil and Itera are expected to invest up to
USD 720 million in Uzbek gas production over
25 years, the paper said. The companies plan to
produce 4.5 billion cubic metres of gas in the
first few years and raise the output to between
8 bcm and 10 bcm in the years to come, the
paper said. The gas will be exported to Russia
and Europe via existing pipelines.

Control valves for
Saudi Aramco
Saudi Aramco is the latest end user to take delivery
of high technology Severn Glocon MLT control
valves to fulfil especially demanding applications.
Severn Glocon is supplying two 16” by 24” Class
300 control valves for hydrocarbon sour gas to
flare duties at the Saudi Aramco Uthmaniyah in-
stallation in the country’s eastern province. The
valve duty involves sour gas flowing at up to 14.8
cubic feet per hour at a pressure of 238 psia. Each
valve is designed to reduce the pressure to just
under 60psia, a ratio of 4:1 that would require the
equivalent of six conventional concentric cages in a
traditional globe valve design. By adopting the
Severn Glocon MLT alternative solution, concentric
cages are replaced by a far more compact multi-
labyrinth trim, consisting of a stack of computer
designed discs that offer multiple stages of pres-
sure let down. For this specific application, the MLT
stack, manufactured from 316 grade stainless steel
and Stellite coated, has been designed with 12
stages of pressure reduction and fitted within a
completely new valve pattern. Both valves will be
equipped with double-acting pneumatic actuators,
smart positioners and side-mounted handwheels.
The order for Aramco was received from the Saudi
contractor ZATE by Severn Glocon’s established
agent in the country, YBA Kanoo, who will provide
local support for the installation.
Automation ups Eka production rates
Eka Chemicals NL, an Akzo Nobel division located
at Maastricht, The Netherlands, has successfully in-
creased process uptime and production capacity
with the help of PlantWeb digital plant architecture
with Foundation fieldbus technology from Emerson
Process Management. The chemicals company was
looking to fully automate its processing operations
to achieve uninterrupted production, 24 hours a
day. Emerson began the automation with
PlantWeb architecture at Eka Chemicals with instal-
lation of its first DeltaV(TM) digital automation sys-
tem in September 2000. Extensions were also
made in May and October 2001. The cost benefits
were primarily found in the reduction of operational
staffing, through the automation of manually oper-
ated valves and dosing systems on resin reactors,
and the replacement of two manual batch plants
with automated continuous production units. Also,

Auma’s good deed
A successful hill-walking charity climb for Auma
UK’s managing director and recently appointed
contract engineer is set to raise just under GBP
1000 for neurofibromatosis. In appalling weather
conditions, UK MD Ian Sully and his colleague
Terry Banks covered just under 5000 metres of
mountain terrain. The demanding route included
Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis and was
the biggest walking challenge faced by the duo
from the actuator manufacturing firm.
Ian Sully commented: “I realised that it was im-
portant to do more than merely train at my local
gym: I wanted to really push myself to go be-
yond my normal capabilities and I wanted to do
it for a worthy charity. Now, back at my seden-
tary, desk-based job, I can hardly walk, but it has
been worth it thinking of raising the profile of
the charity and raising sponsorship money!”

batch consistency has improved and production
levels are slightly increased. Emerson was able to
supply more than 250 of its EL-O-Matic open/
closed valve actuators, with switches, in addition to
20 three-position EL-O-Matic actuators. AS-i bus
was identified as the optimum solution for on/off
valve actuation and was simple to implement with
the existing DeltaV system. In addition to the
DeltaV system and ELQ actuators, Emerson also
provided a wide spectrum of products including
Micro Motion(R) Coriolis flow meters, Rose-
mount(R) Model 3051 pressure transmitters and
Model 3244 temperature transmitters with match-
ing sensors and Saab Rosemount radar level trans-
mitters, and Fisher® control valves with Fieldvue®
digital valve controllers. The advanced technology
helps reduce costs associated with wiring, installa-
tion, commissioning and maintenance.

Rotork wins UK water work a plenty
Rotork has recently won four contracts from the
UK water industry. Firstly, Rotork will supply a
complete package of valve actuation services to
Yorkshire Water, encompassing actuators and

The Masoneilan 78200/18200 Series Lincolnlog

high resistance multi-step axial flow configura-

vice Valve Technology Seminar) program, aimed

went off and found a company that were pre-
pared to do it , and they retired as millionaires
and bought a pub, and we ? , well I’m writing

The valves that came into being were Double
Block and Bleed Valves .
Well that was 20 years ago and it’s about time
things moved on.
The principle of Double Block and Bleed is well
known , the process (or Mechanical ) 1st isolate
valve combined with the second isolate (or in-
strument ) valve with a venting facility all in one
block. Fewer leak paths, lighter weight construc-
tion than the conventional gate/ globe /ball con-
figuration, better accuracy of instrumentation ,

10 million cycles
When Worcester Controls’ valves and Norbro ac-
tuators were installed at a fine chemicals manufac-
turing plant in Middlesbrough in 1997 they had a
target to achieve one million uninterrupted cycles.
Five years and ten million cycles later, they are still
operating under highly demanding conditions,
with only one reported gland leak, which was
taken up by a minor adjustment. In the application
an acidic liquor containing dissolved salts including
sulphates and chlorides with a pH of 3.5 is carried
at temperatures of up to 50C. Operation cycles are
extremely high - the actuated valves used to con-
trol the liquor’s flow are operated every 20s. Given
the nature of the liquor, any valve leakages would
be highly unpleasant and adversely affect the
workplace, so the valves chosen had to be envi-
ronmentally safe. In seeking an improved solution
that would extend the intervals between valve
changes, the firm initially evaluated diaphragm
valves, before selecting Worcester Controls’ E51
EnviroSafe flanged ball valves. The seven valves,
manufactured from stainless steel, feature a unique
dynamic dual sealing stem arrangement and are
controlled by double-acting Norbro pneumatic ac-
tuators, which given their strenuous workload
have also remarkably lasted the course.
Fast nickel valves
A resource is now available for end-users who re-
quire quick delivery of corrosion-resistant nickel-
based valves. Piping systems designed for chlorides,
carbonates, sulphates, nitrates, acetates etc are, by
nature, subject to long deliveries for high-pressure
class gate valves. The problem is particularly acute in
an emergency situation where a single special valve
could jeopardise a construction schedule or result in
costly loss of production. Quattro Alloy Valve can
solve the problem of acquiring small-bore, high-alloy
ANSI / API gate valves as it focuses on producing
single or small quantities of valves. All valve bodies
are machined from solid forged bar stock, ensuring

Mogas’ award
MOGAS Industries, Inc., the leading producer of
severe service ball valves, has received the Export
Achievement Certificate from the U.S. Depart-
ment of Commerce.
David A. Sampson, the Assistant Secretary of the
U.S. Department of Commerce from Washing-
ton D.C. presented the award to Louis Mogas,
founder of MOGAS Industries, Inc.. The award
ceremony was held at MOGAS’s corporate
headquarters in Houston, Texas. U.S. Congress-
man Gene Green attended the event and ad-
dressed the group. He congratulated Mr. Mogas
and the employees on this momentous event in
MOGAS’s company history.
“This year our export business is 60% and it is a
vital part of our success. We are proud to have
received this distinguished award” said Louis
Mogas. The award recognizes U.S. businesses
that have made their first or a new-to-market
export sale. “Most jobs in America are created
by small companies. Small and midsize compa-
nies like MOGAS Industries, Inc. comprise almost
97 percent of U.S. exporters,” said Assistant Sec-
retary of Commerce for Economic Development,
David A. Sampson.
Valves for Syngas plant
ARCA-Regler GmbH (Tönisvorst, Germany), has
delivered about one hundred valves via its sub-
sidiary von Rohr ARCA BV (Eerbeek, The Nether-
lands) to the Netherlands. The valves, ECOTROL
valves with ARCAPRO positioners, will be used in
a Syngas plant. Because of demanding pressures
of ANSI 600 to 1500 with media like process and
sour gas and oxygen, Hastelloy® and Monel®
were among the materials used in the valves. De-
pending on the use special standards as oxygen-
quality, NACE and fireproof criteria had to be ful-
filled. In addition energy valves for steam and

Colorado river
In one its most prestigious water management
actuator applications, Auma plays a key role in
new hoist technology for flood gates at the Tom
Miller Dam based on the Colorado River in Texas.
The dam is designed to provide flood control, hy-
droelectric power, a predictable source of fresh
water supply and recreation.
It is the third attempt at building a dam at the site
as the two previous constructions were washed
away by floods. The Tom Miller Dam, which is over
30 m high and 450 m long, has two water turbines
capable of producing 15,000 kw of electric power.
In addition to hydropower capability and spillway,
the dam has nine ‘tainter gate’ style flood gates.
Original gate hoists have been replaced by a
dedicated design fabricated by Auma customer
Steel-Fab of Fitchburg MA. The new hoists con-
sist of two drums for collecting chains with links
some 127 mm long: each drum is driven by an
Auma model GS worm gearbox. In turn, the
worm gearboxes are driven by model GK bevel
gearboxes. An Auma SA multi turn actuator
with DD output drive provides the torque to
the bevel gearboxes. The gates are driven by
Auma SA25.1 actuators and GK/GS gearboxes.

Syngas plant in the Netherlands.
Hand actuators
Netherlocks Safety Systems has supplied pneu-
matic hand actuators to SBM to help the oper-
ators on the Falcon FPSO, which will be locat-
ed along the West African coast. SBM recog-
nised that the pig launchers and receivers on
the Falcon FPSO were equipped with gearbox
operated gate valves in the main and kicker
line. And as these valves require a large num-
ber of turns, this is an ideal application for an
actuator. Netherlocks proposed its unique KMS
pneumatic hand actuator, which can be
mounted to any type of hand-wheel operated
valve without changing the original valve
and/or hand wheel. Netherlocks simply adds
an adapter plate to the non-modified hand
wheel. This adapter plate is permanently fitted,
and the actuator can be connected whenever
required. A key benefit is that the hand wheel
remains as it is, so the valve can also be manu-
ally operated in emergency situations. KMS
portable pneumatic hand actuators are espe-
cially designed for use in narrow or hazardous
areas where high torque or a large number of
hand wheel turns make valves difficult or dan-
gerous to operate.
