Reflections 2010
& Directions
In an era of rapid change, the mission of the Library is to 
to provide an inviting, dynamic learning environment 
along with services that  support and enhance teaching,  
literacy and opportunities for learning in new and challenging ways.

Challenges for the Future

 
• Shift from print to digital ‐ we need to explore 
the future of e‐books, e‐texts and e‐readers. 
 
• Access to information wherever, whenever – we 
need to develop a very strong online presence 
available 24/7 and be where they are – 
Facebook, uTunes, YouTube, blogs, Twitter. 
 
• Explosive growth of mobile devices and 
applications will drive new services – QR codes, 
mobile phone apps, iPad apps. 
 
• Collaborative online conversations, different 
learning spaces, cloud computing, a tidal wave 
eBooks & eReaders  Curriculum Mapping of information – all will demand our attention.

Teaching and Learning
At the beginning of Term 2 we conducted four Information Literacy 
sessions for each of the Year 11 and 12 students. While these were 
useful to ensure all students had access to the same information, it 
was also important to follow up these lessons within individual 
classes, and link the learning to actual tasks and assignments.  We 
achieved this in many cases, however this is an area we need to 
focus on much more in 2011. Greg is planning to develop a Library 
Academic Plan by mapping the curriculum for Information Literacy 
and ICT skills, and this will then enable us to develop an Information 
Literacy framework and show us which departments and year levels 
with whom we need to work more closely. 
 
In 2011 we have allocated different teacher librarians to work with 
different departments so they can become very familiar with the 
curriculum for each subject and thus more effectively support those 
departments with professional literature, curriculum resources, 
classroom support and knowledge of online tools to enhance 
teaching and learning. 
 
During the second half of 2009 usage of our Gale databases 
increased as I was promoting them to the teachers. In Term 1 this 
year we had heavy use of these databases as the Science, History 
and Geography departments were all promoting their use. Usage 
has declined over the year, which could be because we weren’t 
continuing to promote their use as much, or because the boys were 
using other databases such as JSTOR, Library Webs and Britannica 
Online.  In 2011 we will endeavour to collect usage statistics on all 
databases to give us a more comprehensive overview. 
 
This year we established a consistent referencing system – APA style 
–across the school, and we then taught many of the boys how to use 
the features in Word which allowed them to easily create a 
bibliography and in‐text citations. 
 
We also spent time creating the Library pages in MyGrammar, and 
the students accessed our databases from there, as well as the APA 
Referencing instructions and our Research Guides ‐ a new initiative 
developed in Term 3 in response to the need for more detailed 
sources of information for senior students.  

Digital Citizenship lessons on the responsible use of the internet and 
mobile phones were presented to Year 10 and 11 boys, and the Year 
9s were given a lesson on copyright: plagiarism of images, video 
clips and music, and where to find free images and music. A Libguide 
was created to complement these lessons, and in 2011 the Digital 
Citizenship program will be further developed for Years 6‐10 as part 
of their PD program.

providing engaging and reflective reading experiences for the students. 
and our READ posters.
Michelle has focused on Year 12 and Year 9 students, while Vicki has 
provided a range of activities for Years 6‐8.  
 
In the Middle School a number of students attended the Somerset 
Celebration of Literature, while others skyped author Carole Wilkinson 
during the Online Literature Festival. Authors Derek Landy, Charlie 
Higson, Roland Harvey and Dave Hackett all visited the school, and the 
boys and their parents were treated to a very enjoyable Book Week 
breakfast with Dave Hackett as guest speaker. 
 
The Year 8s have all been involved in in‐depth conversations about 
books in their Literature Circles program, with each of the teacher 
librarians taking two classes. Three teams of boys also participated in 
the Interschool Readers Cup Competition, and the Year 8 and 9 
competition was held at BGS in the Forum. 
 
In the senior school we have READ posters on display showcasing 
leaders in the school reading – the staff and sporting/ cultural captains. 
The Mothers of Past Students donated $1000 to the Library and each 
year we will use this to purchase a large canvas print of the School 
Captains reading.  The Year 12s have also acted as leaders by 
participating in Two‐Minute Books Reviews and the Apollo Reading Club 
where significant texts were read and discussed with Year 12 girls from 
BGGS. 
 
Michelle worked extensively with the Year 9 boys to develop a Wide 
Reading program and a Historical Fiction reading program. Two Year 9 
classes also participated in the Book Trailer unit during Terms 3 and 4 – 
an Action Research Project Michelle is conducting for the International 
Boys Schools Coalition. The boys were highly engaged in the creation of 
these book trailers, with one commenting, “This has pushed me further 
than what I ever thought I could achieve.” The completed book trailers 
were played in the Learning Commons at the end of the year, and this 
resulted in very high demand from other students for those books. We 
believe this unit has had a positive influence on boys’ reading. 
 
An exciting addition in2011 will be the introduction of our new Reading 
blog, where we plan to showcase reviews by all year levels and staff, as 
well as promoting all things related to books, reading and literature.
