Poriazis Fruits is a newly formed company

based in Chimoio, Mozambique it is the

objective of this company to repair and
profit from the chaos currently reigning
within the Manica Provinces fruit industry.
Subjected to years of civil war
Mozambiquens have not benefited from
their once thriving fruit industry, even now
as the economy continues to grow, farmers
and sellers continue to develop a 3rd grade
fruit industry.

Frans and Dimitri Poriazis who have

been in the retail trade for most of their
lives, with Frans being born in the abovementioned city and having full
knowledge of the Portuguese language. Since 2001 it has been the
objective of the Poriazis family to import fruit from Mozambique into South
Africa, but due to poorly devised customs control and agreements were not
able too until now.
Other members of the team will include horticulturists, labourers, a
collection team as well as cleaners & packers.
Poriazis Fruits will be situated on a 350 hectare citrus farm which has been
secured by the Poriazis family. Over the years companies have established
themselves to grow citrus but due to poor quality control & low standards
most farms have abandoned this to grow tobacco instead citing that as
more profitable.

Mozambique, once the

shining star of Africa used to
export world class fruit & nuts worldwide. It’s tropical climate & fertile soils
had allowed it to produce the best tasting fruits in Africa, if not the world.
Farmers would export the produce to places such as The Middle East,
Europe and Africa.

It is the
intention of
this company
to concentrate
on the citrus
division within
the next 2
years. Full
scale
production of
the banana
division of
Poriazis Fruits,
should start
within the next
few weeks.
Over this
course of time
Poriazis Fruits
will begin to establish itself in a non competitive market when it will launch
the “Chimoio Banana”. Currently bananas are sold from
farmer (peasant) to street vendors, the poor state & quality of
the product is accepted by the customers.
Poriazis Fruits will acquire additional land from the Mozambique
government to plant bananas & additional citrus trees. Poriazis Fruits will
source greater export destination such Europe & the Middle East, hoping to
establish a constant stream of business with fruit wholesalers looking for
bananas & citrus (orange, lemon & grapefruit).

Poriazis Fruits will be the only

banana based company in the
northern part of Mozambique, that
will establish a pack house, where
all bananas bought from local farmers will be cleaned, weighed and boxed
for local sale. Areas supplied will include Chimoio, weekly delivery to
Mozambique’s second largest city Beira as well as to Tete. (Population of
these towns & city are about 800 000 people combined) Currently this does
not happen the sales of bananas is restricted to street vendors & are of a
very low quality. It is hoped that within 6 months to a year Poriazis Fruits
will have the monopoly on the banana trade within the Manica province,
therefore allowing us to determine the selling price based on our demand &
sales.

The 350 hectare farm

secured by the Poriazis
family will be the base
for the sorting, cleaning,
and packing of bananas. Current stock of bananas will be sourced from the
local farmers,
which have
aligned
themselves with
Poriazis Fruits,
therefore
accepting our
terms &
conditions
allowing them to
do business with
us. While at the
same time
Poriazis Fruits
will begin to
plant 40 hectare
of banana trees
in
the Mucati region of Chimoio, & continue until the company is
80% dependent on its own crop. All bananas will be brought to the pack
house where they will be cleaned, sorted, boxed & ripened for local sale or
stored for export.

Within first year of trade Poriazis

Fruits would have established itself
as the only company trading in
bananas throughout the northern
part of Mozambique, with a weekly average of 90 tonnes being distributed
throughout those regions. Over 200 hectors of bananas would have been
planted & harvested therefore allowing Poriazis Fruits to depend on local
farmers for local sales & the companies own bananas for the export
markets. Orange, lemon & grapefruit trees will be planted in year 1.

By year 2 Poriazis Fruits hopes to

have secured more land along the
Beira corridor which would include
mangos, pineapples and coconuts
that will then be included into the fruit stable, therefore increasing
turnover. Bananas sales should now be dependent on 60% local sales &
40% export sales (Europe).
