 New Expectation of Attractive Ulagalla Resort 

Ulagalla  Resort  is  one  of  most  attractive,  favorite 

tourist destination which was nestled in our ancient 
city  of  Anuradhapura  and  every  thing  that  they 
have  created  is  in  eco‐friendly  system.  HELP‐O 
could  construct  a  biogas  unit  with  the  capacity  of 
15m3 and it added another eco‐friendly task for the 
resort.  Through  this  program  resort  can  have  great 
benefits  for  their  economical  side  as  well  as 
environmental  side.  Resort  should  be  awaked  how 
to  maintain  the  biogas  unit  because  this  is  very 
newly step taken by Ulagalla resort so that on 14th of 
March  HELP‐O  chairman  and  some  staff  members 
went for holding awareness program of biogas.  
 

At  the  presentation  our  resource  person  Mr. 

Chathura  Welivitiya  explained  well  on  the  topic  of 
maintain  and  management  of  biogas  unit.  In  his 
speech  he  mentioned  lots  of  things  by  getting 
example  from  our  environment.  He  presented  real 
situation  of  waste  in  the  country  and  actual 
condition  of  some  government  and  privet  sectors 
before they link with biogas program because every 
one  was  suffering  from  this  waste  problem.  Biogas 
program  is  the  sustainable  proper  solution  against 
this  waste  problem;  he  proved  this  by  using  his 
illustrating presentation. 
 

He  showed  how  people  pollute  the  environment, 

what  are  the  action  should  be  taken  to  protect  the  environment  by  having  other 
benefits. There, he mentioned what are the things that can be dumped in to biogas unit 
and  can’t  be  dumped,  through  that  point  he  expressed  how  valuable  of  waste 
separating. Because only organic waste can be dumped and he expressed water mixing 
ratios,  how  to  measure  gas  level,  how  to  maintain  the  unit,  national  and  international 
biogas usage of different field by illustrating .Through this program they could realize 
how valuable thing is biogas and how to manage and maintain this process.

An Inimitable Act of Hareesha –Yakkalamulla to Adding Nature Lovers 
with Having Benefits through Biogas Program 

Hareesha  Hotel  is  one  of  very  attractive  and  best 

hotels  which  nestled  in  the  Galle  district  and 
surrounding with a forest adds more attraction to 
the  hotel.  People,  who  are  engaging  various  life 
styles,  come  to  this  hotel  for  spending  their 
leisure,  vacation,  holding  parties  and  etc.  Among 
them  not  only  local  people  but  also  tourists  are. 
They  welcome  their  guests  and  guests  are  being 
treated  well  by  their  great  hospitality.  They 
supply  foods  and  for  cooking  meals  they  have  to 
spend  in  huge  scale  of  money  on  their  energy 
needs,  as  the  energy  power  they  use  LP  Gas. 
While  having  good  solution  for  waste  problem 
they expect to have an alternative energy for their 
energy  problem.  Actually  waste  was  a  huge 
problem  to  them  previous  time  so  that  they  tried 
to get rid of the waste problem and they searched 
a proper way to solve this huge problem.  
 

Up to now construction part has already done and 
within a few days we expect to dump cow dung to 
generate biogas process. The best thing is we have 
introduced the Slurry Management Process of the 
biogas.  The  slurry  filters  as  purify  the  water  and 
never release the slurry without purifying. This is 
the  newest  technology  we  introduced  to  biogas 
units.  
 

Through  this  program  they  can  save  about  Rs 

35000/=  ‐  40000/=  on  their  biogas  usage  and  they  are  able  to  have  other  benefits  too. 
Organic  cultivation  can  be  started  by  using  organic  fertilizer  which  comes  out  as  side 
productivity  of  this  process.  Through  this  program  troublesome  waste  becomes 
profitable  source  to  them  and  their  attitudes  have  changed  in  positively.  They  can 
conserve to the environment by reducing methane emission to the air. This is good and 
innovative action of the private sector to conserve the environment.

Enhancing Effort of Knowledge of Biogas Benefits to Muththuthambi 
Vidyalaya  

MUTHTHUTHAMBI  VIDYALAYA  located  in 

Jaffna is one of leading school of Jaffna district 
and  also  children  are  being  educated  not  only 
to build up their education side but also school 
try  to  build  up  good  citizens  to  this 
motherland.  While  educating  children  they 
think  of  children’s  nutrition  too,  so  that 
children are being treated by providing meals. 
For  providing  meals  they  are  used  to  cooking 
meals  at  school  by  using  fire  wood  and  waste 
was a huge problem to them, energy crisis also 
acts among their problems because they spend 
on fire wood highly not only that it is directly 
affect  for  reducing  forest  generation.  With  the 
financial  support  of  UNDP  Jaffna  Office, 
HELP‐O could construct a biogas unit at school 
premises.  
 

At  mid  twenty  of  this  month  HELP‐O  officers 

went  to  Muththuthambi  Vidyalaya  to  hold  an 
awareness  program  to  enhance  their 
knowledge  of  benefits  of  biogas  process.  Our  resource  person  Mr.  Nilaufar  explained 
regarding  every  benefit  of  biogas  by  illustrating  with  presentation  materials. 
Representatives of UNDP Jaffna office, School teachers and students up to O/L classes 
participated in this program. Mr. Nilaufar revealed of following benefits, 
 

™ As an alternative energy beside biogas 
™ An alternative for electricity power to lightning 
™ Organic fertilizer for fertilizer needs 
 

The program aim to aware the participants about the effective and benefits of the biogas 
and also we aware them about why we need biogas and how this affect globally for us 
and what is the necessity to protect the environment. Step by step we aware what are 
facilities we can get from the biogas. The school has cultivation in the school premises 
and  we  aware  them  to  use  the  bio  fertilizer  as  manure  to  their  cultivation  also  aware 
them can apply this manure, hormone and pest controller.

Facilitating Community Biogas Unit – Walauwatta Village 
 
Walauwaththa,  is  located  near  the  Galle  town. 
Under  USAID  SARI  program  HELP‐O  had 
provided the domestic biogas unit to this village. 
With our previous experiences of domestic level 
HELP‐O  involved  to  implement  a  biogas  unit, 
that  unit  is  fiberglass  biogas  unit  with  the 
capacity  of  6m3  and  50kgs  of  waste  with  water. 
The  biogas  unit  provided  under  loan  basis  and 
they  are  getting  benefits  from  the  biogas  unit 
now they put the waste to biogas unit and waste 
is  not  a  problem  to  them.  The  beneficiary  is 
happy  about  this  unit  because  she  doesn’t  need 
much  space  to  install  the  biogas  unit  and  she 
expects  to  start  the  cultivation  from  the  organic 
fertilizer  of  biogas.  Not  even  that  she  already 
started  to  repay  the  loan  installment  and 
according  to  her  statement  now  she  can  save 
much  money  that  she  expended  to  LP  Gas  and 
fire  wood.  The  step  we  have  taken  is  little 
different  because  this  biogas  unit  is  totally  loan 
basis  after  install  this  biogas  unit  we  could able 
to  got  many  requests  like  this  biogas  unit.  The 
organization  expects  to  use  that  fund  as  a 
revolving fund to expand the program in future.  
 

This  village  has  very  little  space  and  it  is  very 
populated so this kind of biogas unit is perfectly 
matched to the community need. The other thing 
is  people  can  recover  the  cost  within  very  short 
period  and  after  that  they  can  have  the  profits. 
Under the  SARI  Energy program we could able 
to  implement  very  success  program  in  many 
places  of  the  district.  And  the  program  was 
much  effective  to  reduce  the  waste  from  the 
generating  place.  The  all  programs  are 
community  based  and  implemented  the  though 
the community network of the HELP‐O.

Success Community Biogas Unit – Negombo  
 
Negombo  is  one  of  well  populated  city 
of  the  country  and  it  a  commercial  area 
too.  With  the  support  of  the  CITYNET 
we  constructed  the  two  biogas  units  in 
Don  bosco  village.  The  waste  collection 
was  very  high  in  the  village  and 
authority  of  waste  management  belongs 
to  Negambo  Municipal  council  but  it 
was  difficult  to  manage  the  total  waste 
properly so that they were searching for 
a  better  solution  for  this  huge  problem 
and  Municipal  Council  is  one  of 
members  of  CITY  NET  Japan,  with  the 
financial support of CITY NET and with 
the  technical  support  of  HELP‐O  as  an 
active  partner  involved  to  implement 
two  biogas  units  at  Don  Bosco  with  the 
capacity  of  22m3,  500kgs  of  waste  with 
water can be dumped in to this unit 
 
One biogas unit constructed inside of the 
village  and  second  biogas  unit 
constructed  in  Don  Bosco  Technical 
School  with  the  request  of  the  Municipal  Council.  It  has  few  major  reasons  for  it. 
Collection waste is huge amount and other thing is the school had many pigs and there 
is no place to put the pig dung properly. So there is a huge environment problem and 
few of people complained about this situation. So we consider about this situation and 
constructed the biogas unit in Don Bosco Technical School.  
 
At the moment we could able to dump the warm cow dung to the second biogas and 
we  are  waiting  to  produce  the  Methane  gas  from  the  warm  cow  dung.  The  school 
expects  to  use  the  biogas  as  a  renewable  energy  source.  Actually  biogas  is  the  best 
answer  for  current  huge  waste  problem  for  every  country  when  considering  their 
nature  because  it  is  cost  effective,  profitable  and  environment  friendly  process.  Also 
they have a plan to start cultivation in the school because they have enough space for it 
to start the organic cultivation.

Experience  Exchange  Program  between  Sri  Lanka  –  Cambodian 
Government  
 
There  was  a  Technical  Cooperation  for  Developing 
Countries  from  20th  ‐24th  of  March,  2011  in  Phnom 
Penh  Cambodia  and  two  officers  of  Negambo  MC 
and Mr. Chathura Welivitiya, the Chairman of HELP‐
O,  Mr.  Darshana  Maduranga,  project  Manager  of 
HELP‐O  got  this  great  opportunity  to  participate  in 
this  great  opportunity  to  exchange  their  experience 
with biogas sector.  
 

It  was  funded  by  CITY  NET,  UNITAR  and  French 

Government and their 1st day of Cambodia they have 
met  Mr.  Ang,  department  of  Environment  of  Phnom 
Penh  in  their  discussion  he  has  declared  about 
problems and challenges that they have to face. After 
that  our  chairman  has  given  his  instruction  to  them 
for their problems. Then they have gone to visit some 
biogas  sites  and  their  first  visit  in  domestic  level,  it 
was functioning well and they have seen some places 
should be changed. 
 

On  the  same  day  they  have  gone  to  community 

domestic  biogas  unit,  the  unit  has  worked  properly 
and  there  was  nothing  to  apply.  Site  visit  to  Youth 
Rehabilitation  Center,  site  visit  to  Dumping  Yard 
biogas  unit  are  another  visiting  of  the  same  day.  On 
their visiting they have seen some some places should 
be changed and they have given good instructions to 
fix those problems.  
 

On the second day there was an experience exchange 
program  and  Mr.Ang  had  declared  that  some 
problems,  they  are  facing  deeply  on  their  waste 
management  task  what  are  the  problems  they  are 
facing.  Then  our  chairman,  Mr.Chathura  Welivitiya 
explained  what  the  answers  for  these  problems  are. 
Step by step they could aware Phnom Penh officers of Department Authority. After that 
Municipal  Council‐  Negambo  conducted  their  presentation  and  they  explained  about 
NMC and its services to the grass root level community also they explained of

 their projects that they have implemented in various areas 
of the MCarea including biogas program. 
 

On the 3rd day they have visited NORADAM School to see 
the waste management in school level with the support of 
CITY  NET  waste  management  program  has  been 
implemented in school. On that day DOEPP has given bio 
slurry  for  starting  organic  agriculture  inside  of  the  school. 
Last day they have taught officers of DOEPP how to make 
active  Carbon  in  dumping  yard  with  the  support  of 
German analyzer there, they have found CH4, Co2 and O2 
of  the  biogas  and  content  of  gases  were  good  and  their 
decision  was,  with  CH2  level  generator  can  be  run  and 
finally  they  have  visited  Rice  Mill  which  was  run  by  biogas.  Through  this  tour  all 
parties had great opportunity to exchange their ideas of this biogas concept and it was 
very valuable for all to learn more.

 Program about Best Practices, Lesson and Learnt of Biogas Technology 

The  program  started  on  15th  March  2011  the 

program topic is best practices lesson and learnt 
of  biogas  technology.  Through  this  program  we 
expected  to  share  our  experience  and  what  we 
have improved the biogas technology during the 
past time. This program is one of the activities of 
the  USAID  SARI  Energy  Program.  With  the 
financial  support  of  them  we  could  able  to 
conduct this program.  
 

We  have  invited  many  stakeholders  for  the 

program  and  they  are  root  level  Community, 
Health department officers, Municipal Councils, 
Prisons,  Schools,  Engineers,  Chamber  of 
Commerce,  Hoteliers,  and  NGO  participated  to 
this  program  and  many  our  beneficiaries  also 
participated. 
 

From  beginning  time  we  explained  how  we 

changed the biogas unit construction model for a 
better and suitable way. We have developed the 
biogas  unit  structure  and  new  model  is  very 
success  and  effective.  We  implemented  old 
Chinese  model  biogas  unit  but  we  found  some 
faults of the biogas and we mix the Indian model 
and china model so we have developed it. 
 
We connect the Indian outlet to china dome and 
also we have improved some technologies which 
are  related  to  this.    The  other  thing  is  we 
construct  the  biogas  unit  we  followed  many 
technical strategies one is construct the bottom of dome not like a fat surface and it is 
like a “U” shape and that is one technical improvement we have done.

Oasis Hotel nestled at Hambanthota is one of 
bigger,  tourism  board  approved;  attractive 
hotels  in  Sri  Lanka  and  a  large  number  of 
foreign  guests  are  being  treated  by  their 
utmost hospitality. So that day today guests’ 
arrivals  are  very  high  to  this  favorite  tourist 
destination.  They  provided  different  kind  of 
foods cooking by using LP Gas. Hotel Waste 
was  a  huge  problem  to  them  and  also  they 
had  to  spend  to  get  rid  of  waste  problem  so 
that they were searching for the best solution 
as an eco‐friendly hotel. HELP‐O involved to 
solving  this  problem  by  implementing  a 
biogas unit at the hotel premises. 
 

HELP‐O  could  give  a  sustainable  waste 

management  solution  for  this  massive 
problem. We constructed biogas unit with the 
capacity  of  15m3  and  they  save  about  Rs.10, 
000/=  per  a  month.  Now  they  don’t  want  to 
face  waste  problem  at  all,  they  are  very 
happy of biogas concept so that they love this 
biogas unit and protect it because of cost effective and profitable. Previous time waste 
was a huge problem to them and now they know how valuable thing is waste with this 
program.  They  keep  their  step  for  future  with  this  concept  because  they  have  seen 
effectiveness  and  taken  benefits.  LP  Gas  prices  are  increasing  day  by  day  so  that,  this 
concept is very important one to them now. This was our new experiment of Hotel field 
and very successful program. 
 

Through  this  program  we  could  expand  our  programs  to  other  hotels  too,  seeing  the 
benefits we are requested from other hotels to construct a biogas unit at their premises. 
It  is  timely  solution  for  this  energy  crisis  to  face  without  inconvenience  and  reducing 
Global  Warming  and  climatic  changes  are  other  benefits.  Now  waste  became  a 
marketable item and it has a value now even they are earning from the throwing waste 
and that is good model to study.

 A Wise Act Taken by Gampaha Municipal Council  
 
Gampaha  Municipal  Council  is  one  of  leading 
government  institution  in  the  Gampaha  District 
and  it  is  their  duty  to  keep  the  city  clean  and 
beautiful.  Two  years  ago  they  faced  a  huge 
waste  problem  and  then  they  tried  for  different 
kind  of  solution  and  at last  they  came to biogas 
concept  through  this  program  they  expected  a 
proper  sustainable  solution  for  their  waste 
problem.  They  took  necessary  every  action  to 

fulfill  their  duty  and  also  they  provide  their 

utmost  support to community of the area to  get 
rid  of  bad  issues  of  huge  waste  as  a  very 
populated  city  waste  collection  is  very  high  of 
the city.  
 

Two  years  ago  under  Pilisaru  Project,  HELP‐O 

involved  to  implementing  a  biogas  unit  at  MC 
and  HELP‐O  constructed  two  biogas  units  with 
the  capacity  of  22m3  and  500kgs  of  waste  and 
water  could  be  dumped  in  to  this  unit.  They 
used  fisher  market  waste,  vegetable  market 
waste  and  litter  of  the  city  to  generate  these 
units. Through these programs six houses could 
take  biogas  for  their  energy  needs  for  cooking 
food  as  well  as  canteen  of  MC  use  biogas  for 
their  cooking.  Both  party  could  save  money 
spend on LP Gas and they declare that usage of 
biogas  is  very  effective  than  using  LP  Gas 
because  of  its  powerful  heat  and  they  can  cook 
meals  faster  than  that  method.They  cultivate  vegetables,  fruits  and  flowery  plants  by 
organic fertilizer  at  their MC premises. One of officer of  MC, Mr.Remand declare  that 
through this program city has become clean and tidy because it is preventing bad smell 
of  fishery  waste  and  other  waste  and  they  love  this  program.  Actually  this  inimitable 
act can save not only money but also save our nature. It is our duty to protect this for 
our future it leads clean and healthy path to our lives. Not even that they sell the biogas 
to near houses and that is very good example to other Municipal Councils earning from 
waste.

 The Best Solution for Increasing Prices of LP Gas 
 
With  the  globalization  people  have  various  facilities  to  link 
with the world as a result of this, people are always finding 
easy  and  comfortable  life  style  by  neglecting  traditional 
methods  with  their  busy  lifestyle,  before  ten  years  or  more 
people are used to cooking food by using fire wood. At that 
time it was a symbol of wealthy life is using gas for cooking. 
Modern  is  world  loosing  the  natural  gas  and  fuel  day  by 
day. 
 
At  the  present  majority  of  people  use  LP  Gas  for  their 
cooking  purpose  and  they  have  to  spend  much  on  LP  Gas 
monthly. They have to face lots of trouble with LP Gas usage 
because the prices of Gas are always increasing, as a person 
who  takes  monthly  payment  that  is  very  badly  effect 
because  they  plan  what  to  do  after  having  their  salary. 
People  are  suffering  from  this  problem  highly.  People  have 
to  face  for  rapidly  changing  economics  conditions  as  an 
example gas price of Sri Lanka has increased about Rs.238/= 
and according to report of Department of Census & statistic, 
average monthly  per capita income Rs.9104 and considering these facts we can realize 
that what is the situation of them like essential goods as gas. This is situation is same in 
all over the world day by day natural gas and fuel are decreasing. People should find 
renewable energy source and environment friendly is very important.  
 

That  is  why  we  are  launching  biogas  projects  by  expanding  to  other  parts  of  the 
country.  Actually  this  is  the  best  and  proper  solution  for  suffer  of  them.  Think  a 
moment we remove tears from their eyes by applying smile on their face as the national 
career  of  biogas  sector  in  Sri  Lanka.  With  Biogas  we  can  create  environment  friendly, 
cost effective energy power. We expect to introduce this concept house to house for the 
betterment of the nation, country and world. Early time biogas applied only for animal 
waste  but  HELP‐O  could  able  to  convert  this  technology  to  municipal  waste  and  that 
was a revolution of the country. This is one of good and sustainable solution for energy 
program,  waste  problem  and  not  even  that  this  is  directly  link  with  the  health  of 
community.

 HELP‐O People’s Movement  
 
 
People’s Movement of HELP‐O is completely a community based & village level leaders 
are taking opportunity to leans the movement with the strong net work with each other.  
 

In  present  this  people’s  movement  has  spread  among  Galle  &  Matara  districts  of  the 
country  &  the  small  group  which  has  formed  in  village  level  is  the  ground  level 
community  base  of  this  net  work.  The  branch  with  contain  with  small  groups  are  the 
village level platform for the community to express their ideas & provide assistance for 
the  people.  They  are  functioning  in  village  level  by  taking  the  leadership  those  who 
were  limited  in  kitchen  earlier  &  through  this  net  work  in  present  all  of  them  are 
empower to raise their voice for their needs also.  People get financial & non financial 
assistances  through  their  small  groups  which  are  indirectly  help  the  process  of 
development. 
 

In  here  we  are  going  to  give  some  idea  about  the  activities  which  took  place  with  in 
these people’s movement in the month of March 2011. 
 
Home garden among our people’s movement 
Due to food crisis in the world all have to suffer with 
lack of food as well as high price of food. To face this 
crisis  as  per  their  capacity,  the  members  of  our 
people’s movement stated to do  home gardening  by 
taking the advantage of their community net work in 
their village level. They are getting in to groups & do 
gardening in urban areas also using some techniques 
for problems such as lack of space & chemical fertile 
etc.  
In  present  they  are  getting  harvest  even  for  their 
domestic  needs  &  this  is  much  helpful  for  them  to 
sustain  in  village  level.  Our  every  branch  are  now 
stated  to  implement  these  home  gardening  concept 
among their members & in future they are expecting 
to keep a competition to select the best home garden 
with  the  main  aim  to  encourage  the  members  about 
the habit of gardening.

 Skills Development Effort for Our People’s Movement Members 
 
To  encourage  our  small  enterprises  to  continue  their 
business as well as to provide them guidance to do their 
business  in  profit  oriented  way  HELP‐O  has  designed  a 
one  day  work  shop  on  last  27th  March  2011  at  Kalupe 
Vishaka College. 
    
Kalupe & Malawanna people’s movement branches were 
selected  for  the  first  program  those  who  going  to  obtain 
financial  assistance  from  NDTF  funds  &  the  all 
beneficiaries of 38 were participated for the program. Mr. 
Chathura  Welivitiya  the  chairmen  of  HELP‐O,The 
chairmen  &  wise  chairmen  of  HELP‐O  people’s 
movement,  MF  staff  of  HELP‐O  &  some  other  branch 
leaders of HELP‐O People’s Movement were participated  One community Leader lighting 
for the program. The program was started at 9.00 A.M by  the traditional oil lamp 
lighting the traditional oil lamp.

How the program was designed 
 

In the beginning of the program we design an activity for the participants to remind & 
take attention of them towards the aim of to participate in that training each other. We 
provided  pens,  papers  &  some  other  materials  for  participants  to  express  an  idea 
regarding participating to the program. 
The next activity we have design a group work for them to write down the strategies & 
methods of to be a good small enterprises & the challenges they are facing to promote 
the business in profitable way. Through this two group activities we were able

of  group  spirit  which  help  to  develop  their

• To encourage & share ideas with each other 
regarding new methods with good qualities 
of  small  enterprises  to  come  forwards  with 
their traditional business 
 

• To  encourage  the  beneficiaries  to  do  their 

small business by taking the challenges they 
face in easy way  
 

According  to  the  main  ideas  of  the  beneficiaries 

we  have  categorized  the  huge  threaten  in  that 
Hikkaduwa  area  which  is  face  by  the  coir 
producers  in  promoting  their  coir  products.  In 
present  these  community  is  suffering  of  that  no 
proper  pits  for  them  to  make  coir  because  they 
want  for  retting  the  coconut  husks.  But  due  to 
the  development  and  construction  many  houses 
in  the  area  they  can’t  find  a  suitable  place  for 
retting. That is one of main challenge they had to 
face.  
 

After  identified  their  situations  &  difficulties 

through  the  group  exercise  we  suggest  some 
solutions & provided some guidance for them in 
the  evening  time.  Especially  we  identify  that 
most  of  them  were  not  much  aware  &  think 
about expansion of their business & we provided 
guidance to develop them selves step by step. 
 

Community  appreciated  the  program  much  &  was  much  intention  among  them  to 
participate  with  all  activities  also.  Finally  all  of  them  explain  that  program  was  much 
effective for them & it was helpful to leans their thinking styles in modern concepts to 
develop  their  business.  Great  achievement  of  the  program  was  that  we  could  able  to 
empower the grass root level community specially the women to take opportunities in 
development process with out limitation in to the homes.

 People’s Movement Marketing Program Lead the community for 
Business World 
 
In present People’s Movement of HELP‐O is leading 
the  community  toward  the  success  step  by  step  & 
now  on  time  their  marketing  program  also 
functioning  well  alone  with  their  financial  &  non 
financial program. With in the month of March they 
have  established  their  third  Marketing  stall  in 
Thotagamuwa People’s Movement branch. As many 
of  the  Thotagamuwa  community  leans  their  life 
with  fishing,  coir  production,  hand  loom  &  other 
Buying goods from the shop  handicrafts this is good opportunity for them to sell 
their products in a place of their own. 
 

On  last  30th  March  2011  stall  was  open  by 

Mr.Chatura  Welivitiya  Chairmen  of  HELP‐O.  The 
Chairmen  &  Wise  Chairmen  of  the  People’s 
Movement,  the  community  leaders  of  other 
branches  as  well  as  staff  of  HELP‐O  also 
participated  for  the  opening.  The  goods  such  as 
Dried  Fish,  Bakery  Products,  Spices,  Coir  Products, 
rice  flour  &  some  other  consumer  products  of 
community  are  selling  in  this  stall  for  lower  prices 
than out side shops. 
 

The  community  leader  of  Thotagamuwa  as  well  as 

one  of  the  director  board  member  of  HELP‐O 
people’s  Movement  expressed  the  idea  that”  this  is 
a  very  good  initiative  taken  by  People’s  Movement 
to  give  value  for  the  products  of  our  members  in 
their own village” 
   
The  branch  leader  gets  the  leadership  to  manage  the  program  &  they  are  providing 
these products to other peoples movement branches also. Through this our beneficiaries 
get a market for their products in village level & it will affect to increase the production 
in village level. Now members are happy as they get products in good quality in lower 
prices as well as it help to protect other self employer also who are trying to stand on 
their own strength.

 Great Opportunity to Participate in”Creative Women’s Forum” 
Exhibition 
 
“Creative Women’s Forum” Exhibition was held in 
Galle  Municipal  on  25th  to  30th  March  2011.  It  was 
organized  by  Galle  Small  &  Medium  Enterprises 
Society & Creative Women’s Forum with the main 
aim to encourage the village level small enterprises 
& to promote their business for the foreign & local 
Market. 
 

HELP‐O  People’s  Movement  is  proud  to  have  a 

one stall in this Exhibition & our village level small 
business community got the opportunity to exhibit 
their  products  in  this  program.  It  was  a  great 
chance for them to get an idea about the demand of 
their  products  as  well  as  to  have  a  good  will  for 
their products in the local & foreign market.  
     
Through  this  program  our  community  member 
could able to recognize the other small enterprises 
&  it  was  much  useful  for  them  to  make  linkages 
with  out  side  also.  The  products  such  as  home 
made  sweets,  rice  flours,  spices,  dried  fish,  hand 
looms,  coir  products  &  some  other  consumer 
products were kept for the Exhibition & they were 
able  to  sell  these  all  in  favorable  price  for  local  & 
foreign people. 
 

Through  this  exhibition  our  small  &  medium 

enterprises  were  encourage  much  to  do  their 
products  more  with  high  Quality  standard.  Not 
only  that  this  was  a  good  opportunity  to  expand 
their  productions  and  business  to  many  places. 
Before those women could not able to do this type 
of  the  works  because  they  are  not  well  organized 
and  empowered  but with  the  support  of  the  people’s  movement.  The  members  of  the 
people’s movement expect to participate to this kind of program in future.

 Access for Safe drinking Water for Grass root level community  
 

Thotagamuwa is a village located in Hikkaduwa 
DS  division  &  it  was  fully  affected  by  tsunami 
disaster  also.  People’s  Movement  branch  has 
established  in  this  village  base  after  that  natural 
disaster  &  people  were  much  more  empower  as 
they  got  an  opportunity  to  raise  their  voice 
through this. 
 

In  present  there  are  16  groups  in  our 

Thotagamuwa  peopele’s  Movement  & 
community who were victims of tsunami are still 
give  leadership  for  the  branch  also.  Kitusewana 
flats  have  build  for  the  homeless  community  of 
this village after that tsunami but they didn’t get 
water  for  this.  The  people  live  in  this  flats  were 
our  branch  members  &  through  the  financial 
assistance  of  CLAPNET  Thotagamuwa  branch 
was  able  to  provide    assistance  to  get  water 
supply  for  these  members.  It  was  a  great 
achievement of these members as they suffer a lot 
without  having  water  for  their  homes.  With  in 
the  month  of  January  2011  six  members  of  this 
flat  able  to  get  this  financial  assistance  &  other 
four  members  requirements  also  forward  in 
present. 
 

The  disbursed  amounts  Rs.116,  610.00  in  the 

range  of  Rs.16,  000.00  to  Rs.30,  000.00  each 
person.  In  present they have taken  the  water  for 
their homes & all of their faces are full of smile as 
they could satisfied their major basic needs now. 
Finally  all  of  them  express  their  idea  that”  They 
love & protect this People’s Movement for ever as 
they  gave  assistance  for  the  some  of  the  villages 
to get basic needs of the lives that access for safe 
drinking  water”.  Now  their  living  condition  has 
been  increased  and  they  can  drink  good  and 
quality water.

 Eradicate Poverty through People’s Net work 
 

An  economic  condition  of  Lacking  of  money  &  other 

basic  necessities  which  need  to  live  such  as  food,  water, 
shelters, education etc.., is one definition of poverty. But 
eradicate poverty & hunger form the world before 2015 is 
one  major  expectation  among  the  Millennium 
Development  goals.Sri  Lanka  also  trying  to  comfort  this 
goal  by  taking  incentives  collaboration  with  private  & 
other  stake  holders.  Identifying  the  reason  of  poverty  is 
bit difficult as it is various from country or from nation. 
But  Natural  disasters,  Overpopulation,  Lack  of  skills, 
Lack  of  education,  Cultural  causes,  War  etc  are  some 
factors cause of poverty in any sectors.  
 

Our  people’s  net  work  also  trying  to  take  initiatives  in 
this  regards  &  they  believe  the  net  work  among  the 
community  especially  among  marginalized  poor  will 
make  this  goal  a  reachable  one.  In  present  we  able  to  make  a  platform  for  the 
community by forming the groups in village level which provide access for them to talk 
& discussed their matters in village level. The needs as well as their disabilities to find 
any solution in their level will forward through this small groups to branch level. The 
village people take leadership in this program & their financial & other social problems 
discussed  in  village  level  through  the  participation  of  community.  The  People’s 
Movement  of  HELP‐O  is  the  combination  of  these  village  leaders  &  the  village  level 
matters are taken in to discussion in this table among the leaders.  
 

In  present  these  community  net  work  are  much  powerful  to  find  a  solution  for  their 
problems through their own assets even. As they mobilize savings in village level they 
are  enrich  to  provide  credits  for the  people.  This  is  one  advantage  of  this  net  work  in 
case of poverty elimination. It will occur to promote economic growth is indirect way as 
these credits are supplied for the self employment needs specially. As well as supply a 
credit will be a help to finding employment also. Sharamadana campaign & other kind 
of  gathering  organized  in  village  level  through  the  people’s  movement  leans  the 
community towards the one common aim that is development. 
 

Now  they  have  ability  to  provide  financial  facility  &  other  social  assistance  not  only 
their  villages  but  also  for  other  villages  of  our  people’s  movement.  In  this  way  our 
HELP‐O people’s movement provide guidance for the community to go forward alone 
in village level with the main aim of eradicate the poverty &  in present they are trying 
to reach sustainable in village level through these process.
