Committee seeks quilts for show
Third Quilters Glory Quilt Show is set
for June 11 and 12
BIG RAPIDS — Alice Bandstra has been
making quilts for more than 30 years. A
resurgence in quilting during the 1976 U.S.
bicentennial celebration piqued her interest
in the hobby. Since then she has crafted
countless quilts, that have been given to
friends and family and displayed others
around her Big Rapids home.
“I had tried some other kids of sewing
and crafts,” Bandstra said. “But quilting
interested me because of the workmanship
that goes along with it.”
To get others interested in quilting,
Bandstra chairs the committee that
organizes an event for quilters from
Mecosta County and beyond to display
their works and share ideas and
techniques with other enthusiasts.
The Quilters Glory Quilt Show — which
is held every two years — will be from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 and
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June
12. Quilts will be displayed at Big Rapids
Middle School and the Old Jail. Admission
is $5, which is good for both days at both
locations. Numerous vendors also will be
displaying quilts, patterns and supplies
available for purchase.
Quilters can register through May 1 to
display their creations at the show. Entry
forms are available at Artworks and online
at www.artworksinbigrapids.com.
“Quilting is a very popular craft that has
developed into more of an art form,”
Bandstra said. “We thought it would be fun
to start a quilt show in Big Rapids.”
Organizer Phyllis Jacobs expects this
year’s show to be the largest to date. More
than 150 quilted items were displayed
at the first show in 2007, with about
250 people in attendance. Two years
later, more than 210 quilted items were
displayed and attendance was doubled.
“The object of the event is for quilters to
display what they’ve been working on,”
Jacobs said.
Awards will be presented for the top quilts
of different sizes, including king/queen, full/
twin, wall-hanging or crib sized, and other
quilted items. A “Best of Show” award also
will be presented, with the winner receiving
a stay at the Inn at the Rustic Gate.
Vendor and author, Debra Henniger, of
the Chicago area, will display quilts she’s
made and lecture on her book, “Hobo
Quilts.” The book shows historic photos
and letters dating back to the 1930s.
The quilting show also will feature the
Ladies of the Library Group, of Midland,
who will discuss and demonstrate an
appliqué technique that has become the
group’s specialty.

Jet’s Pizza is flying into town -
Restaurant will occupy former Papa
John’s
BIG RAPIDS — A Jet’s Pizza franchise will
be landing in Big Rapids this summer.

restaurant franchise in the former
Papa John’s location at 215 Maple St.
Construction on the project is expected
to begin in June, with completion set for
August.
“We’re going to be opening up before
the kids come back to Ferris (State
University),” Schafer said. “You’ll start
seeing activity over there in the next three
weeks.”
Although Schafer is still discussing the
terms of a lease with the building’s owner,

“guarantees” it will open by fall. Both
parties are confident a long-term lease will
be signed in the coming weeks.
“It will be for at least for five years,”
Schafer said. “Everything is going to be
new in there from front to back. ... Once
the plans are approved (by Jet’s corporate
offices), it takes about 45 days to complete
the project.”
Jet’s has a pre-approved contract facilitator
that opens up many of its franchises,
Schafer said. Once that crew is completed
opening a Jet’s in Cedar Springs, it will
start work at the Big Rapids location.
The Maple Street location is larger than
typical Jet’s restaurants, which are about
1,600-square-feet. The proposed site is
2,500-square-feet. Schafer said that extra
space will be used to have a hallway from
the rear entrance to the front counter,
and for limited restaurant seating. He
also plans to have about 10 stools at the
counter for dine-in customers.
Papa John’s opened at the location in
2001. A fire started about 12:30 a.m. on
Sept. 15, 2010, after employees had left
for the night. No one was injured in the
blaze. Papa John’s decided not to reopen
the store after the fire and not renew its
lease, which ends in June.

Stay on Track to Your Destination With
Regular Tire Maintenance

that 62 percent of drivers don’t know
where to find the correct inflation pressure
for their vehicle. The specific inflation
pressure number can be found on the
vehicle placard located on the driver’s
side doorpost, glove box door or fuel door
or in the owner’s manual. For accurate
pressure, check tires when cool, and don’t
forget the spare. A properly inflated tire will
save you nine cents per gallon at the gas
pump and improve vehicle fuel efficiency
by 3.3 percent.
2. Don’t Overload Vehicle. Overloading
decreases fuel economy due to increased
wind drag and cargo weight. Handling,
control and braking are also negatively
impacted.
3. Rotate Before You Go. Regular rotation
helps achieve uniform tire wear and
improve road performance. Tires rotated
every 6,000 -- 8,000 miles prolong the
life of the tire and help maximize your tire
investment. It makes sense to get a tire
inspection when you rotate.
4. Straighten Up. Proper tire alignment
provides safe, predictable vehicle
control as well as a ride that is smooth,
comfortable and free of pulling or vibration.
Proper alignment helps tires wear evenly
and last longer.
5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful. The RMA survey
also found that 52 percent of drivers do not
know how to tell if their tires are bald. Lack
of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip wet
roads. Make sure tires don’t have uneven
wear, high or low areas or unusually
smooth areas that can increase the risk of
road accidents.

raise and lower their heels and toes and
tighten and release their leg muscles,” said
Dr. Stone. “This helps to promote blood
flow to the legs. Also, drink plenty of water,
and wear loose-fitting clothes.”
Vascular surgeons suggest a regular
exercise routine, a healthy body weight
and not smoking as preventive measures
against DVT. Ultrasound tests can detect
DVT.
Since half of DVT patients never
experience warning signs, early detection
is important.
