RMCMI 2010 Colorado-Utah Regional Meeting Recap

On the evening of Thursday, May 20, the twenty-first annual Colorado-Utah Banquet was held
with 89 registered and 75 attending the Banquet. Russell Hardy, CONSOL, Board Member and
the RMCMI Regional Director for Colorado/Utah, hosted the evening. After a relaxing cocktail
hour and wonderful dinner, Russell introduced Gary Stubblefield, Norwest, Former President of
the Institute and Life Member along with Board member Bruce Lindsay, Arch Western
Bituminous. Utah Mining Association was represented by President Todd Bingham.

Eight new members were asked to introduce themselves.

Russell then spoke about the first ever Short


Course to be held at a regional meeting.
Nineteen attended the class held Thursday
afternoon on “Underground Conveyance
System Design vs. Reliability.” Mark
Alspaugh, President Overland Conveyor Co. present-
ed the class.

Mark Alspaugh The evenings Keynote speaker “New Developments


in Headed Rebar Ground Support” was given by Roland Walker, Engineering
Director/Business Development Manager, Central America from DSI Mining and Tunneling Americas.

Sponsorship was outstanding with the following companies all


contributing $500 each to help RMCMI continue the excellent
state meetings and pursue Public Education endeavors: Agapito Roland Walker
Associates, BUCYRUS, Canyon Fuel-Sufco Mine, CONSOL
Energy, Fairmont Supply, Industrial Electric Motor Services, John T. Boyd, Joy
Mining Machinery, LeTourneau Technologies America, Mac’s Mining Repair
Svs., Norwest, Robinson Transport, and Savage Services.

Carbon Country Club did an outstanding job with the Thursday Banquet and the breakfast and lunch on Friday.

Friday morning found 62 attending the morning breakfast and technical session.

Breakfast was followed by three excellent speakers.


J. Shawn Peterson, Research Engineer for NIOSH
PRL spoke on “Noise Controls for Roof Bolting
Machines.”

Following Shawn, Jeff Weber, VP of Geosciences with Luca Technologies gave a talk on “In
Situ Bioconversion - the Penultimate Clean Coal Solution.”

Closing this year’s technical meeting was Todd Ruff, Deputy Branch Chief
- Electrical/Mechanical Systems Safety from NIOSH, Office of Mine Safety
and Health Research. Todd spoke on “Recent Developments in Mine
Communications and Tracking Technology.”

A sincere thanks to the speakers for making this a very successful meeting.
It was a perfect day and everyone was anxious to play golf. A sincere thanks to all the companies who donated golf prizes.

A good time was had by all. The RMCMI office thanks Russell Hardy for planning an outstanding meet-
ing. Russell did this CO/UT meeting while living in Pittsburgh.

Everyone was a winner but a few garnered some great prize money.
