ecological process

Jeffrey Tunkey
Barcelona 2008
abstract
This study is the result of 14 weeks of
research, observation and documenta-
tion on three recently constructed parks
in Barcelona, Spain. This study examines
the ways in which the parks reveal and in-
terpret ecological phenomena, processes,
and relationships and how people use the
space. This study seeks to understand the
new paradigm of a conscious commitment
to sustainability in urban design. Each of
the three parks being studied has its own
unique contribution to the subject, and the
synthesis of all furthers knowledge in a way
where one could not. The performance ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Parc de Diagonal Mar

PATTERNS OF USE
Immediately upon my discovery of
Parc Central del Poblenou I began visit-
ing the site each day at different times to
determine when the most use occurred.
The patterns I discovered were predict-
able according to the organization of the
Spanish work week. After visiting Parc
Central del Poblenou in the early morning
(8:00-10:00) midday (12:00-1:00), mid
afternoon (2:00-4:00), and evening (3:30-
6:00). I concluded that the evening was
be far the most popular time to be at the
park. The morning usually brings in a few
people going for a walk or walking their
dogs. Occasionally a mother pushing a
stroller and a few children. Midday there
are a few people walking through, a few
people on lunch break, and sometimes on
a nice day there are people napping under
the willows. The afternoon brings much of
the same until around 3:30 people start fil-
tering in and spending more time commit-
ted to recreation. The largest user demo-
graphic by far is families. Even though the
amount of play equipment is limited, fami-
lies dominate the main areas of the park.
The park has a thick vegetated pe-
rimeter condition with the main circula-
tion regulated to the fringes and along the
recreated tram tracks. Attention is focused
inward on the main thematic elements like
the Placa Sardana and the Island Under the
Dome. The trees in the park are planted in
rows and spaced evenly, but the user ex-
periences them in a much less formal way.
Since they are planted in rows radiating
out from the Placa Sardana, one is rarely
in a position where the trees all line up
and appear organized. The unevenness of
the trees size and canopy also lend to the who are faced with the weeping branches like a garden where the upper classes might are meant to represent my work in un-

DISCUSSION
