This method statement provides the work procedures for the coring works on
the asphalt concrete pavement as required for the below project.

METHOD STATEMENT – CORING ON ASPHALT PAVEMENT AAS-MS38/2010 Rev. 1/PM

1. SCOPE
Two cores shall be taken adjacent to the 17 trial pit locations to give a total of 34
cores (17 for Al Hoty’s testing and the other 12 & 5 as reserved for the specialist
consultant, RSK STATS, and MED, respectively). The material to be sampled will be
an asphalt concrete pavement including the base/sub-base course.
4. RESPONSIBILITIES
General Manager : Ensures that resources are available and sufficient to meet the
work program. Reviews and monitors the resources, work
schedule and accomplishments on a daily basis.
Supervisor/Sr. Inspector: Direct supervision of the area and ensure proper working
practices. Also acts as safety officer to ensure safe moving of
plants/equipments within the work area/and that PPEs (spell out
what are these) are worn at all times.
Technician : Receives and executes the instruction from the senior inspector
or site engineer for the proper execution of all in-situ testing and
inspection.

5. HEALTH & SAFETY
Access to the work area will be through the designated route as escorted by
airport authority assigned to this project.
6. SEQUENCE OF WORK
6.1 Position the core drill with the core barrel perpendicular to the asphalt
concrete surface at the specified sampling location, approximately
100mm from the edge of the trial pit. The machine shall be fixed on the
pavement with anchor bolts.
6.2 Turn on the core barrel equipment and lower the rotating barrel steadily
with just sufficient pressure to start cutting.
6.3Continue the coring until the core barrel projects through the pavement
layers up to the top of subgrade level (elevation as determined in the
trial pit).
6.4 Stop the barrel rotation and turn off the equipment. Raise the core
barrel and remove the core from the hole using core retrieval
equipment.
6.5 Immediately collect the cores and put into plastic bag. Mark the plastic
bag containing the cored sample with appropriate sample number
identification.
6.6 Place the sample in a container to maintain the temperature for
the cores until delivered to the laboratory for testing.
6.7 Backfill the core holes with cold asphalt mix and compact with hand held
compactor. Core holes shall be dry and clean prior to backfilling.
6.8 The geologist records all details regarding the cored sample.
RECORDS on the cored sample will include but not limited to the following
information;
✔ Project Name / Contract No.
✔ Core sample reference Number
✔ Date of Execution / Completion
✔ Dimensions and sketch of cored sample
✔ Description of strata including its thickness
✔ Details of services encountered, if any
✔ Photographic records

Each day works for the above sequence of work will be contained within the time
window provided by BAC/SPD. To date time window is from 0300H to 0600H.
MINIMUM duration / time frame budget for the above sequence of work are
distributed as follows:
a. Mobilization / setting-up.
b. Coring works = approx. 30 mins. each
(full depth of approx. t=300mm, wearing course down to subgrade level).
c. Retrieval of cored sample & tagging = approx. 5 mins. each
d. Core logging by Geologist = approx. 5 mins. each.
e. Reinstatement works (backfilling, levelling, compacting) – approx. 10 mins.
each.
f. Demobilization from the work area .
