Make Disciples of All Nations (Matt 28:16-20 )
The feast of the Ascension
of the Lord is celebrated in
many countries today.
O en referred to as the
Great Commission, today’s
Gospel passage from
Ma hew shows the Risen
Christ giving his final man-
date to the disciples before
ascending to heaven. This
mandate is now ours and
we as Chris ans are also
called to “make disciples of
all na ons,” passing on the
message of Christ’s teach-
ings which can be summed
up in the commandment of
7th Sunday of Easter or Ascension Sunday
love.
While we rejoice in the
evangeliza on efforts of
past missionaries in con-
ver ng “pagans” to the faith
- and many of us today
know Christ through their
efforts - we must also
acknowledge that numbers
alone are not adequate suc-
cess indicators. Rather, the
fruit of any evangeliza on
should be the transfor-
ma on of minds, hearts and
socie es.
Paul VI’s encyclical, Evan-
gelii Nun adi, defines evan-
geliza on as “bringing the
Good News into all the stra-
ta of humanity, and through
its influence transforming
humanity from within and
making it new….” How do
we bring the Good News to
those around us? To what
extent are we Good News?
Although it may sound sim-
ple, the basic characteris c

of a disciple of Christ is love
– a love that is selfless, un-
condi onal and beau fully
elaborated by Paul in his
Hymn of Love in 1 Cor 13. As
the saying goes, “faith is
taught not caught.” The suc-
cess of carrying out Christ’s
mandate lies not so much in
our ability to convert others
to the faith but more in
transforming lives (and soci-
ety) through our witness of
love, so much so that others
too are inspired to love as
Christ loved. May we be joy-
ful and faithful witnesses of
Christ’s love to one another.

World Communications Day
The theme for this year is: Truth,
Proclamation and Authenticity of Life
in the Digital Age.
Mass will be celebrated at Church of
the Divine Mercy at 5:30 pm. Arch-
bishop Nicholas is the main cele-
