Objective
To seek an R&D job position in any area as described in the following Research S
ketch section.
Research Sketch
My primary area of interest lies in membrane-based separations, specifically by
zeolite membranes with particular emphasis on the relevant liquid/gas mixtures s
eparations (by pervaporation, vapor permeation, gas separation, nanofiltration a
nd reverse osmosis) and catalytic/inert membrane reactors. I also have the exper
tise in preparing zeolites and other porous active materials as catalysts.
Research Ability
As co-PI, idea provider and project research leader, I compiled the majority (in
cluding the whole technical section) of a concept paper and a full proposal subm
itted to DOE-Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). As the only lead
research organization without any partner organization, we have finally won the
DOE grant of $1,955,078 on April 29, 2010. The title of this proposal is: A Sol
vent/Membrane Hybrid Post-combustion CO2 Capture Process for Existing Coal-Fired
Power Plants (ARPA-E Control Number 0208-1576). In June, we got an additional i
ncrease of $56,500 because we need to buy an extruder worth $250,000. Thus, the
total grant awarded is $2,011,578.

Specialized Field
* Reproducible preparation and characterization of a range of inorganic membrane

* Design of catalytic/inert membrane reactors for the dehydration of esterificat
ion or etherification reaction systems, and especially for the study of water-ga
s shift reaction.
* Screening and synthesis of CO2-philic membranes (e.g., zeolite membranes and o
rganic-inorganic hybrid membranes) for CO2-related separation processes at eleva
ted temperatures.
* Scale-up of some representative zeolite membranes. During my pursuit of my Ph.
D. and postdoc. studies in Japan, my supervisors---Profs. Ken-ichi Okamoto and H
idetoshi Kita are very famous experts in sulfonated polyimide membranes and zeol
ite membranes, respectively. The first commercially available LTA zeolite membra
ne was developed by our group members in collaboration with Mitsui Engineering &
Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan. A plus benefit from Multi-Year R & D on separa
tion and catalysis (ca. 13-year R & D experience) renders me a competitive job-s
eeker in the field of selective membranes.
