Small Industries Development Organisation (SIDO) an apex body at Central level for
formulating policy for the development of Small Scale Industries in the country, is
headed by the Additional Secretary & Development Commissioner (Small Scale
Industries) under Ministry of Small Scale Industries Govt. of India.
SIDO is playing a very constructive role for strengthening this vital sector which has
proved to be one of the strong pillars of the economy of the country. It functions
through a network of the field offices namely 30 SISIs, 28 Br. SISIs, 4 RTCs, 7 FTSs,
various training and production centers and specialized institutes spread over
different parts of the country. It is rendering the services in the following areas :-
Advising the Govt. in policy matters concerning small scale sector.
Providing techno-economic and managerial consultancy, common facilities and
extension services.
Providing facilities for technology up-gradation, modernization quality
improvement & infrastructure.
Human resources development through training and skill up-gradation.
Providing economic information services.
Maintaining close liaison and vital linkage with the Central Ministries, Planning
Commission, Financial Institutions, State Govts. & similar other developmental
organizations/agencies related to the promotion and development of SSI Sector.
Evolving and coordinating policies for development of ancillaries.

The Small Scale Industries Board (SSI Board) is the apex advisory body constituted to render
advise to the Government on all issues pertaining to the small scale sector. The Board is
reconstituted every two years and is headed by the Minister In charge of Small Scale Industries
in the Government of India. The Board comprises among others State Industry Ministers, some
Members of Parliament, Secretaries of various Departments of Government of India, financial
institutions, public sector undertakings, industry associations and eminent experts in the field.
The Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner(SSI) is the Member Secretary of the
Board. The Board is serviced by the Board and Policy Division in the office of the DC(SSI).

The range of development work in the small scale sector involves several Departments /
Ministeries and several agencies of Central / State Governments. Though a non statutory body,
the SSI Board provides an effective platform for informed debate and facilitates coordination
and inter - institutional linkages.
The Govt. of India introduced District Industries Centre during 1978. With a view to promote district-wise
Industrial development in the Nation. During 1985 a seperate sub-office was formed at Karaikal. The activity of DIC
was to survey the existing traditional and new Industries and als0 the availability of raw materials and human
resources and making arrangements for training facilities in production / management of small units of entrepreneur.
FUNCTIONS / OBJECTIVES
* The PMRY scheme was implemented in this region since 1993 onwards. Selected beneficiaries are given
financial assistance through banks.
