Identifying Mystery Babylon....
an introduction
I believe the literal city of Babylon will be
rebuilt. (Dubai may be it, already under
construction.) The prophecies regarding its
instantaneous and eternal destruction were
never actually fulfilled. (Jeremiah 51:26,42,63-
64; Isaiah 13:19-21; 1 Peter 5:13; Rev.
18:8,10,21). So, just as the Roman Empire will be
revived (Daniel 7:7-20;2:40-44;Rev.17:10-12), so
will Babylon. I believe we'll see it being rebuilt
within the next 10-15 years. At the same time, I
believe that a world-wide revival of
spiritualism /humanism (the earthly
manifestation of Mys-tery Babylon) will occur
and it will be headquart-ered in Babylon, Iraq
with the future antichrist as its chief
spokesman. (This is seen in his quick rise to
power, descriptions of him in Daniel and
Revelations and that he is being ridden by
Mystery Babylon, so he serves her interests
until he is empowered by the devil and he along
with 10 kings of that final kingdom, throw off
this burdensome rival. ) His charismatic
presence and amazing talents militarily,
politically and economically will have people
eating up his so called religion.
However, "Mystery" Babylon doesn't just exist
in the Tribulation. It already existed in John's
day; it was her future development into a
physical, religious community and the judgment
of that abomination that John was being shown.
The earthly future Babylonian false religion will
be judged, burned and desolated, by then ten
kings as an act of God. Regarding the fact that
"mystery" Babylon exists even now, before that
future idolatrous, physical institution is
established, we find this statement:
"Come hither; I will shew unto thee the
judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon
many waters: With whom the kings of the earth
have committed fornication, and the inhabitants
of the earth have been made drunk with the
wine of her fornication." (Rev. 17:1-2)
Clearly, the angel says the woman "sitteth" upon
many waters (over nations and people (v.15)
"Sitteth" is present tense and the angel says
that these nations--the inhabitants of the
earth, i.e. sinners, have been made drunk by the
harlot. That indicates to us why sinners are
spiritually asleep and drunk, but we are told to
be alert and sober. This shows us that
"Mystery" Babylon--the spiritual agency--
already existed and was oppressing the world at
the time of John's writing. Therefore this could
not refer to the Roman Catholic Church, Jewish
moneylenders, Jerusalem, New York city or
Saudi Arabia which are just a few of the
possibilities that commentaries have proposed,
not to say that they haven't been influenced by
that spirit though of course.
My Theory on Mystery Babylon
John is shown the vision of the woman riding the
Beast, indicating that her judgment will occur
when this "harlot" has built a quasi- religious
organization and is dominating the last world
empire, Revived Roman. That is yet future and
reflects a future controlling of political rulers
by the future, organized harlot religion. The ten
kings with antichrist will destroy that
manifestation of the Harlot.
But, John said that this harlot "hath committed
fornication with the kings of the earth" and it
resulted in the spiritual drunken stupor of all
sinners on earth in John's day and in ours. I'm
not entirely sure how the system operates, but
as I read it the "kings" of the earth (Spirit
rulers --Satan's angelic generals, represented
by the seven heads of the beast, since they rule
over human governments) committed
"fornication" with the Harlot which, I believe,
represents the organized world of demons who
once lived and ruled the earth under Satan's
oversight. By means of this relationship, the evil
angels are given the avenue and means to rule
over nations. This is how Satan and his angels
gain influence over all sinners and especially
over wicked rulers, so as to keep the nations
deceived and to oppose God's kingdom on earth.
In scripture, demons are sometimes called
"principalities" and "powers" indicating various

positions of authority. (Romans 8:38; 1 Peter
3:22; Acts 23:8) They are also called "thrones"
(Col.1:16; Rev.2:13), which to me suggests they
occupy thrones, which would be in rooms, in
buildings, in a city or cities possibly built in the
days of Babylon, that hover over the earth in
the "heavenlies" where Paul said there are ruling
wicked spirits (Eph. 6:12) This "city" and the
daughter harlot cities that came from it are a
Satanic counterfeit of the true City of God, the
New Jerusalem (Rev.21:2,9-10) which is the
future residence of the redeemed who will rule
over the earth; it will one day descend and
occupy the spiritual plane ("the heavenlies") as
well as in the physical plane on the New Earth.
Today, the heavenlies are ruled by rebel angels
and demonic usurpers.
At first my idea may sound far fetched -- but if
you and I believe that a massive city 1500 miles
high, tall and wide is going to descend from
outer space (Rev.21) (mountains and rivers
included) then I would contend its not far-
fetched at all! The angel specifically tells John
what Mystery Babylon is in the last verse:
"And the woman which thou sawest is that
great city, which reigneth (lit: hath a kingdom)
over the kings of the earth." Rev. 17:18
Just because we haven't seen it, doesn't mean
it isn't there! It is a spiritual city. Now, if we
aren't meant to take it literally, we still have
the concept that when the Bible refers to a
city, it actually is referring to the inhabitants
of a city, all of whom are in allegiance to the
king over that city. This is true of the Bride of
Christ (Rev. 21:9-10) as well as the demonic
hordes that are in obedience to their king,
Satan. The residents of this spirit city, and
cities born from Mystery Babylon, occupy the
heavenly realm over the cities of men, and these
are the demonic chiefs through whom Satan
must operate to control nations and men. (This
is my theory.) In biblical times, the symbolism
of a "city" was that the inhabitants of a city
were all seen as being one, just like the body of
Christ though many members is one Body. All of
these residents as a Unit, are personified as
"the daughter", "the lady", "the queen", the
"mother", "harlot", or "daughter"-- various
females, personifying the city as a whole. All
these inhabitants are as one and are submitted
to the king or idol-god ruling that city. The
individual inhabitants are considered the
children of that city(their mother) and its
god/king (their father). Paul said that we are
the Jerusalem above is our mother; its those
who have gone before us who have "begotten us
in the gospel" and "travailed in birth until Christ
be formed in us". But, as a collective organized
whole, we are the city itself.
In all likelihood, demons are the disembodied
spirits of the inhabitants of earth prior to
Adam. I believe that the earth and the universe
are probably billions of years old like astronomy
teaches, but that around 10,000 years ago it
was restored in 6 days and God instituted the
plan of redemption to bring about a perfect
society again on earth, undoing what Satan had
accomplished. My thinking is that somehow the
demons have first dibs on things down below,
since it was actually their home, angels being
servants of God's throne. So, Satan and his
angels have to operate upon humanity,
expressing themselves in the earthly realm
through these "earthy" spirits. Now why is the
relationship between "the kings of the earth"
and "the harlot" called fornication
(prostitution)? Again, remember I think these
kings represent Satan's angels and the Harlot
represents the demonic hosts. When God
created the pre-adamite beings, they were to
serve God and worship Him. By bowing
themselves to Satan in his rebellion, they were
serving another god, another master. God counts
that as adultery, which is a type of fornication
in the language of the Bible. God often referred
to Israel as His Wife and called 'her' an
adulteress and a harlot for choosing to serve
idols or to look to other nations for help rather
than Jehovah.
Thus, this first creation of beings on earth
abandoned their covenant with God and became

an unfaithful wife to him, who then began selling
herself to Satan and his angels. Obviously, I am
speculating, but I'm trying to keep it within a
logical context. What favors did this "harlot"
have to offer these new earthly kings, Satan's
evil princes and what could they pay "her" in
return? As to what favors "she" sold them, we
read that the whole world was made drunk as a
result of the interaction between the fallen
angels (kings) and the demons (the harlot)
overseeing individual souls, so we see that their
evil morality, their abominations and
fornications, says the text spread into all
nations of the earth. This gave Satan some
control over events on earth so as to bring
about his false kingdom and false messiah among
other goals. What was the payment given by the
angels to the demons? The text says that she's
drunk with the blood of the saints. I see this as
the results of her actions, just like the nations
being drunk on sin and idolatry were the results
of the angel/demon interaction. So, it seems
that demons besides craving expression in
human affairs, possessing human bodies, and
occupying certain lands and territories (Mark 5;
Luke 11:24), they hate mankind. This explains
the frequency with which we read of deaf,
dumb, blind, foul, tormenting spirits afflicting
people. They also crave to deceive people and do
so by creating "doctrines of demons" and posing
as real gods, which the unsaved believe the idols
represent, but Paul said they're not gods,
they're demons.
I taught in class that this hierarchy of demons
organized under Satan and ruling over the
unsaved is what we commonly know as "the
World", part of the evil triumvirate: "the world,
the flesh and the devil", our enemies. I
illustrated this with a triangle, Satan holding
the top position, under him being his fallen
angels, under them being demons and under
them the "sinful nature" that rules in the lives
of the unsaved. As evidence of this hierarchy, I
quoted Ephesians 2:2 which says that Satan is:
"the prince (ruler) of the powers (authorities)
of the air, of the spirit that works in the sons
of disobedience" (WEB) (Notice Satan is the
ruler over the authorities of the spiritual realm
that dominates sinners.) Here's another
translation: Satan is the "... ruler of the
atmospheric domain, the spirit now working in
the disobedient." (HCSB) (shows the tie
between the atmospheric domain and the
"spirit", SIN, that works in sinners' lives.) One
more translation: Satan is "the Prince of the
powers of the air, the spirits that are now at
work in the hearts of the sons of disobedience"
(Weymouth)
To summarize this passage, then: Satan, a
fallen archangel, is the ruler over the
authorities that occupy the lower atmosphere
(spiritually, not physically) above the earth. This
lower "atmosphere" is so much a part of the
lives of fallen man that it is also called "the
spirit (spiritual force) that now works" in them...
what we call "the flesh" or the "fallen nature".
When Christ enters our lives, God's spirit
overthrows the old ruler from our spirit, but
that fallen nature still resides in our body until
the resurrection.
Satan's fellow angelic rulers, like the prince of
Persia and the prince of Grecia, therefore have
to rule over men through these lower spirits. If
you read Rev. 16:13-14 you'll find that in order
for Satan to control the kings of the earth he
must do it by means of demons.
The alternative to my theory that its actual
earthly kings who somehow pay the Great Harlot
for her favors is a more challenging theory to
prove. Despite all the conspiracy theories about
the Illuminati and such, I don't think we can
prove that all earthly kings give themselves over
to Satan or False religion and idolatry in order
to have positions of power themselves and
paying the harlot by giving her access to and
control over their citizenry. I don't think that
makes much sense.

Other factors in the mix: The Babylon
connection goes back to the tower of Babel, a
time of much interaction between the demonic
world and the natural world.. the "sons of God"

(probably demons) committing fornication with
the daughters of men. A place of humanism,
spiritism, rebellion, false religion, idolatry, cult
prostitution, sorcery, drugs and drunkenness ...
which God judged by confusing the languages.
I'm thinking that it was at that time that not
only were the inhabitants of the earth building
the first empires and cities, but that the
demonic overlords were doing the same, and it
was being imitated by men.
It seems that the demonic world is trying to
rebuild that which they began back at Babel, a
city that they can inhabit through the lives of
those who dwell therein. Likely, most people
living in future city Babylon will be under
extreme demonic influence, until all the demons
of earth are attracted to this city... and God
uses it as a prison house for the demons! Rev.
18:2 (ISV) when He brings judgment upon the
rebellious of this world. When Christ returns,
the city is destroyed in "one hour", it is set
ablaze, ruined and sinks into the ground
(Rev.18:21 due to the greatest earthquake ever
to strike the earth(Rev.16:18,19). The Bible says
that the the devil and his angels will be cast into
the Lake of Fire but the demons will evidently
be held in Babylon forever: (Jer.50:39,40;
Rev.18:2)
positions of authority and God's kingdom takes
over the heavenlies (Rev.11:15;12:10); that
portion of Babylon in the heavenlies, is cast
down. That overthrow is immediately followed
by the 10 earthly kings who rise up to destroy
the new earthly Babylon cult which was
headquartered in the new city of Babylon. (This
overthrow of the Babylon in the heavenlies along
with the Babylon cult religion is what the angels
announced had happened at the midpoint of the
Tribulation in Rev. 14:8). At that point all the
demons that have ever existed take up lodging
and hide out in the City of Babylon, possessing
as many inhabitants there as they can. (A legion,
6,000 can inhabit one person.) Finally, when
Christ destroys Antichrist at His return, He
also destroys Babylon the city (Rev.16:19;18:21)
which sinks below the earth and becomes the
eternal prison of all demons.(Rev. 18:2) That is
the third and final phase of the destruction of
Babylon, the enemy of God and His people.

I know its kind of complicated and foreign to

our minds because we don't see in the spirit
world, but that's my theory as to what best
explains all the various factors that describe
Mystery Babylon.

religious forces on earth in a direction and
manner opposed to God and His kingdom.
