The Faytrouni TCP/IP Subnetting Table

By Robert Holtzman, MCSE / Reproduced by Loretta Steele, MCSE
The Faytrouni TCP/IP Subnetting Table is used for deriving subnet masks and IP addresses in networks. The table was
developed by Omar Faytrouni, MCSE, MCT, A+, CNA, and first published on October 10, 1997. With practice, the table can be
constructed and used to compute subnet masks and addresses within a matter of minutes. In the table, the 0's and 1's are used
to represent the eight bits of an octet within an IP address. The top row expresses the bit value as an exponent of (a "power of ")
two. The second row expresses the power of two as a decimal number. The leftmost column represents the number to be used
in the required octet position of the subnet mask. Its octet position depends on the Class of the IP Address.
The sub-table represents the increments by which subnet addresses would increase, depending upon the total number of
subnets available. Of course, there should be a column under each of the remaining columns of the table, but as you can
imagine, this would take up quite a bit more paper to print out.
