ASSIGNMENT
TEST 2 1
02.11.2006 8.00 – 8.45 PM
1. Design the steady-state and dynamic feedforward controllers for the systems with
the following transfer functions. Assume Gt = Gv = 1.
10 2
a) G p ( s) = G d (s) =
s +1 (s + 1)(5s + 1)
5 1
b) G p ( s) = G d ( s) =
s + 3s + 2
2
(5s + 1)
10 − 0.1s 2
c) G p ( s) = e G d (s) =
2s + 1 (2s + 1)
e −0.5 s e−s
d) G p ( s) = G d (s) =
(s + 1)(3s + 1) (s + 1)
Which of these dynamic feedforward controllers are physically unrealizable?
Determine approximate controllers to make them physically realizable.
2. Consider the control scheme for the solid drying system shown in Figure Q2. The
major disturbance to this process is the moisture content of the incoming solids.
For this disturbance, the control system responds quite slowly. It is desired to
implement a feedforward control system to improve this control.
After some initial work, the following data have been obtained:
3. The pressure of a reactor vessel can be adjusted by changing either the inlet or
outlet gaseous flow rate. The outlet flow is kept fixed as long as the tank pressure
remains between 100 and 120 psi, and pressure changes are treated by
manipulating the inlet flop control valve. However, if the pressure goes higher
than these limits, the exit gas flow is then changed. Finally, if the pressure
exceeds 200 psi, a vent valve on the vessel is opened and transfers the gas to a
storage vessel. Design a control scheme that meets the performance objectives.
Draw a process instrumentation diagram for the resulting control system.
