Introduction
This gives details of all known factories in the region using information from a variety of sources. The
basic structure uses information from the Global Tire Report published annually by Crain
Communications (Tire Business, Rubber and Plastic News, European Rubber Journal) but this has
been added to by information from trade magazines, press releases and websites of the individual
companies.

Organisation

The information is arranged by the countries in the region in alphabetical order. For each country the
companies are treated alphabetically under four separate headings:

! Major World Companies

! This comprises the three largest tire manufacturers - Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. The
plants are usually wholly owned but in the case of a joint venture(s) details of the other partner are
given.

! Other World Companies

! Eight important world manufacturers are included in this group:
! ! Continental
! ! Cooper
! ! Hankook
! ! Kumho
! ! Pirelli
! ! Sumitomo
! ! Toyo
! ! Yokohama

! Other Foreign Companies

! This group comprises smaller or more specialist companies which have invested in the
country, either as sole investors or as part of a joint venture.

! Local Companies
! This group consists of indigenous companies based in the region. In the case of India there
are some relatively large companies so those appearing in the Top 75 in the Global Tire Report have
their relative ranking shown in brackets and the largest five companies are shown separately.

Maps
! Some general maps for reference.

Plant details
! The company is shown in blue.
! The factory name or location is highlighted in purple.
! If a company has more than one factory they are shown in alphabetical order.
! New or planned plants are highlighted in a light green wash.
! Plants which have closed in the last five years or which are scheduled for closure have a pale
! red wash.

! The information given for each factory is mostly self explanatory

Ownership structure! The official name of the company. In the case of a joint venture (JV) both
! ! ! ! parties are shown and, if possible, their proportion of ownership.

Year plant opened! ! This can vary a lot. Usually the company has taken the question literally
! ! ! ! and given the date of the plant opening, but sometimes it gives the date of
! ! ! ! the most recent major investment.! ! !
! !
Employees! ! ! As given by the company but subject to frequent change.

Location! ! ! Where details are given this is usually the province or state in which the
! ! ! ! plant is located. This can be found on the map.
! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Tire types manufactured! Self explanatory.

Plant capacity ! ! The capacity is shown in the same format as the response given to the
! ! ! ! Global Tire Report questionnaire. However, in order to make comparison
! ! ! ! easier, this has been converted where necessary into either units or
! ! ! ! tonnes per year. These editorial calculations are shown in brackets. Where
! ! ! ! a daily capacity is given we have assumed 350 working days in a year for
! ! ! ! the purposes of our calculation.

The Kheda plant opened in 1998.

26.5 hectares
! A $56.3m investment plan
in 2007 projected to increase daily
capacity from 10,500 units per day to
15,000 units by mid-2010.
! In early 2010 Bridgestone announced that it was investing $36.7m to add capacity for radial
truck and bus tires. The new production should come on stream in the first half of 2011, gearing up to
full capacity of 400 units a day by the second half of 2012. The project will create about 190 jobs on
top of the 970-current employees. It will require expanding the size of the plant, which stands at 7.1
million square feet.

! In addition, the company has decided to build a new plant at Chakan, near Pune, Maharashtra,
at a cost of $540m. PSR (passenger car radial) production is scheduled to begin in January 2013 and
TBR production (truck and bus radial) is scheduled to begin the following August. By the end of 2020,
production capacity is expected to reach approximately 10,000 units per day for PSR and 3,000 units
per day for TBR. Bridgestone has secured a 190 acre plot in Pune, about 170 kms south east of
Mumbai.

Additional notes
Originally established in 1993, this was a 50:50 JV between Goodyear and Ceat Tyre, a subsidiary of
RPG. In 1998, Goodyear bought out its partner and then decided to offer 26% of the company to
Indian investors. In February 2010, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. initiated a voluntary delisting of the
equity shares of Goodyear India from the Bombay Stock Exchange, in effect, taking the company
back into 100% ownership.

Additional notes
Goodyear India is aiming to boost the combined annual capacity of both plants by 15 per cent to 4
million tires a year, according to various online news sources. The news follows the launch of the
Goodyear DuraPlus in the country, a tire aimed at small family hatchbacks that account for the largest
segment in the Indian car market. Goodyear India reportedly wants to target the replacement market
with the new tire.

Additional notes
! Michelin has been interested in manufacturing in India for several years but only formally
announced its plans in November 2009, after it had arranged to sell its minority 10% holding in Apollo
Tyres. Only outline details have been released, probably because plans are still flexible. However,
rumours and speculation had been published in the Indian press for two years before that.
Development will be in several phases with the first phase entering production in 2012 and reaching
completion in 2016. Investment will be about $1 billion over 10 years and a total 1127 acres has been
secured for the plant although only 290 acres will be built on initially.

The company also owns 103 acres of land at Rajangaon, near Pune, Maharashtra. There has been
speculation in the local press that this land could be used for a second facility in India to make car
tires. Michelin has refused to confirm this but, in any case, it is unlikely to commission a second
factory before the first has opened.

! ! ! ! ! tonnes/year and 157,500 tonnes /year.
Additional notes
! This plant was commenced in 2008 on a 135 acre site at a budget cost of 22 billion rupees.
Initially it was planned to produce 8,000 car tires and 3,000 truck tires each day and to design the
factory in a flexible manner to allow production to be tripled in future. In the event, radialisation in the
Indian truck tire market has happened much quicker than forecast so Apollo merged some expansion
phases to double the initial capacity for truck tires.
! It is now, after its opening in March 2010, potentially Apolloʼs largest plant. It is intended to be
the main hub for the companyʼs R&D activity.

have capacity for 1.5 million tires per year, but this figure includes
tubes and flaps. Approximately, 30 percent of its production, worth
$80 million, is exported to 50 countries. In mid 2009 the company
announced plans to invest 80 million euros over the next two years

Laksar - New Plant

A new state-of-the-art factory at Laksar-Haridwar, Uttaranchal has been built in a record time of 10
months. This modern Rs.2300 billion ($214 million) factory has a combined production capacity of
over 4.4 million truck tires per year.!
Ceat !
! Ceat is the flagship company of RPG Enterprises. It has ambitions to expand capacity and
become Indiaʼs second or third biggest tire manufacturer. To this end it plans to grow at a rate of 20%
per year, outpacing the tire market growth in India of around 8%.

Additional notes
! Initial building for this plant started in early 2009 and it is planned to open in late 2010.
Investment in the 125 acre site is in two phases. The first phase will cost Rps 5 billion ($107 million)
and a second phase from 2011 - 2012 will cost Rps 2 billion ($47 million) to raise the capacity above
the initial plan of 4 million per year. The plant is well-placed as Gujarat is emerging as a major
automotive manufacturing area and the company expects to export between 25 and 40% of
production.

Additional notes
! J.K.Tyre
! http://www.jktyre.com/
! JK Tyre has the capacity to produce 9.2 million tires annually from its five Indian plants but it
intends to raise this to 9.8 million over the next three or four years with an investment of Rps8 billion
($171 mill.) It sees particular opportunities for its OTR and speciality tires. In addition it is hoping to
establish a greenfield plant in South India, probably in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu.
Investment for this would be about Rps4 billion ($85mill) and initial production capacity would be
about 2.5 million passenger tires per year and 400,000 truck tires. If a suitable site is confirmed it
would come on stream in early 2012.

In late 2009 JK Tyre & Industries

inaugurated what is reputed to be Indiaʼs first
radial truck and bus tire manufacturing plant.
The project doubles the radial tyre capacity
at this site from 400,000 to 800,000 a year,
at a cost of 45 million euros. A further
expansion of OTR capacity in Mysore,
involving an investment of 17.2 million euros
is scheduled for completion in early 2010.
! MRF
! http://www.mrftyres.com/
! MRF, the largest Indian tire manufacturer, also has the largest number of plants, all located in
South India. In early 2010 the company announced an expansion ambition which would cost 30
billion rupees, to be spent over an undefined period. Of this, about one third would be spent on
expanding radial tire capacity at the existing factories and the remaining two thirds would be spent on
building two new greenfield factories; one in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu and the other at an existing plant at
Medak, Andhra Pradesh. Civil works have commenced at Tiruchi but neither plant is listed below as
full details have not yet been released.

After a somewhat chequered history Dunlop India was bought by the Ruia Group in 2005. There were
numerous financial, legal and labour relations problems to overcome and production was intermittent
for several years but by late 2009 the chairman was confident that most of the problems had been
resolved and the factories were moving back to normal production. Ruia Group bought Falcon Tyres
in 2005 at the same time as Dunlop and in 2007 it bought Monotona Tyres. Whereas Dunlop
produces tires for 4-wheeled vehicles, bioth Falcon and Monotona make only 2 and 3 wheeler tires.

! ! Modi Rubber, part of the V K Modi Group, http://www.modigroup.net/, closed its plants
in Uttar Pradesh in 2001 following a strike by workers when management proposed to link wages
with productivity, but there had been a long history of labour disputes and litigation. The plants were
only re-opened in 2009 after an investment of Rps 3 billion and the re-establishment of a technical
agreement with Continental. Initially the company will produce around 1 million Continental-branded cross-ply
truck tyres for the Indian market. The Continental bias tyres will be distributed via a revived Modi sales network. The
collaboration between Continental and Modi dates back to 1974 when an extensive technical
cooperation was agreed on for the set-up of a new Modi tyre plant in Modipuram. However,
Continental also has agreements with JK Tyre and Metro Tyres.
