BRAZIL FILM FESTIVAL BRINGS
TO AUSTRALIA THE IMAGES,
SOUNDS, SCENTS AND FLAVOURS
OF BRAZIL THROUGH CINEMA.
Brazil Film Festival presents the best of the
most recent Brazilian cinema productions,
while enthralling the audience in a vibrant
cross-cultural atmosphere. Along with its
award winning feature and short films,
the Festival brings to the Australian public
a variety of genuinely Brazilian cultural
manifestations and energy.
Festival Goals.
• To showcase and promote Brazilian
cinema across Australia.
• To create opportunities for future
partnerships in the film industry between
Brazil and Australia.
• To promote cultural exchange and
understanding through cinema.
• To dazzle and touch the Australian public
with the rhythms, colours and melody
of Brazilian cinema.
• To present the best and most awarded
of the recent feature and short film
productions from Brazil.
Background.
Brazil Film Festival is part of Brazil Visual,
an international circuit of Brazilian film
festivals sweeping Europe, North America
and Asia. The Festival inaugurated in
Australia in 2009, showcasing in Sydney the
most awarded of the latest
Brazilian cinema productions.
For four nights, the Festival
touched and dazzled the public
with some of the best short and
feature Brazilian films of 2008
and 2009. In 2010, the success of
the previous year took the Festival
to Melbourne and Brisbane, where it
immediately conquered a captive audience,
and over 1,500 people attended the Festival
in all three cities. In 2011, Brazil Film
Festival is again doubling in size, with more
films, more sessions, and now also flying
across the country to Perth and Adelaide.
Festival Program.
• The film program is curated directly from
Rio by the Festival’s Creative Director,
Alex Heller.
• Prior to each night, the Festival offers
Brazil Lounge, a genuinely Brazilian
atmosphere, featuring Brazilian music,
arts and drinks.
• Brazilian short films open the scene for
each session’s main feature.
• The Festival is officially launched in
Sydney by the Consul-General of Brazil,
and in every other city by a notable
authority regarding Brazil. In 2010, Dr.
Ralph Newmark, Director of the Institute
for Latin American Studies (ILAS) at La
Trobe University, launched the Festival in
Melbourne.
• Screen short films each evening prior to
the main feature in every session.
• Opening and Closing night parties in each
city enthrall the public with live Brazilian
bands, food and drinks.

PUBLIC.
The Festival is targeted at people of all nationalities
and age groups interested in cinema in general, and
in Brazilian culture in particular. A high quality cultural
event such as this attracts anyone interested in film and
cinematography. This includes the media, artists, directors,
critics and other professionals, as well as fans.

The members and leaders of the Brazilian communities in

Australia are loyal patrons of the Festival, bringing with them
the authenticity of a genuinely vibrant Brazilian environment.

rights movement and changed the language

and her effort to support it. It’s
about how her character faces
the abyss, and what she gets
from it is her strength to exist. It
tries to represent the subject of
abandonment in its complexity. It
seeks a character without history,
therefore what happens to her,
doesn’t really matter. Capturing
Camila in her movement is what
really matters: living in her time,
taking responsibility for her
choices, suffering her distress,
her contradictions, giving herself.
With Camila, we want to look at
a brave and complex woman,
capable of throwing herself from
a cliff and developing from this
journey the support she needs
to exist. We want to subtract any
epic meaning from her existence,
and remove any traces of it
from the film’s narrative. Thus
creating a time in which the moral
content doesn’t matter. Moral is
impregnated in the being [not in
the narrative]. Moral blossoms
from the scars originated in
her process of giving herself
absolutely, and vertiginously.
Camila is radical and consciously
alone. She has no past and
doesn’t want to know her future.
The only thing that matters is her
path. The act of writing is her
identity. It is a film about Camila’s
quest for redemption, obsessively
building and destroying herself.
Lonely. Her unconditional quest
is for affection, for intimacy. This
existential experience incarnates
her body.

Social matters.
Brazil is a country of enormous wealth but
equally enormous inequality. Brazil FIlm
Festival is a socially conscious event, as
it is an initiative of the Brazil Foundation
of Australia. Brazil Foundation of Australia
is a not-for-profit, non-governmental
organization for international cooperation,
headquartered in Australia.
The Foundation raises funds and develops
campaigns to inform and mobilise investors
interested in contributing to transforming
social realities in Brazil. The Festival makes
an annual contribution to social projects in
Brazil from its proceeds, and features films
portraying the social challenges the country
endures.
Environmental matters.
Brazil exudes the most biodiverse flora in
the world, which is under heavy duress
from deforestation for logging, pasture and
monoculture. Brazil Film Festival is sensitive
to Brazil’s environmental problems, and
is determined in raising awareness of the
public to these issues. The Festival is also
a carbon neutral event and uses recycled
materials in all its printing.
