Hurricane Mitch.

Location

• The hurricane began in the Caribbean sea


• It went over central American countries like Honduras, El Salvador and
Guatemala, and finally collapsing over Mexico.

Hurricane Mitch was the most powerful hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season,
with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph (285 km/h). The storm was the thirteenth tropical
storm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the season. At the time, Hurricane Mitch
was the strongest Atlantic hurricane observed in the month of October.

Causes

• The surface water of the Caribbean reached 27 degrees during the summer of
1998,and the air above the sea was very humid.
• Air rise due to its heat creating a low pressure.
• The system moved to the west, passing over warmer water and the air rose even faster
and the pressure became even lower.
• The winds reached 120 kph becoming a hurricane and it was named hurricane Mitch.
• Air then came in much faster and the winds reached a climax of 290kph in October
26.
• The hurricane reached land, and when it passed over central America, its winds began
to slow right down.

Effects
On The landscape

• The winds flattens crops and fields.


• The winds destroy houses big time
• The winds destroy power lines and cables
• The intense rainfall cause rapid mudslides
• The rain causes soil erosion causing rivers to flood
• Floods destroy buildings.

On The People.
• The effect on the fields ,crops, farming and harvest was bad because its the
main occupation in central America, this gave unemployment and depression.
• The destroyed houses left many people homeless
• The landslides buried people causing hundreds of deaths.
• The floods drowned many people
• The impassable roads left people stranded and unable to get help
• Created depression and devastation to the people
• Left people sad,homless and poor.

The aid effort.

Stage 1 : rescuing people

• Rescue from flood or from beneath collapsed buildings.


• Aid was need because the coutries simply didn’t have
helicopters and bulldozers etc.

Stage 2 : provide emergency supplies.

• Try to ensure survivors do survive.


• The countries affected do not have enough emergency
supplies.
• Food,clothing,blankets were needed; also purification kits
and medicines to prevent spread of diseases.
• Aid was provided by charities like the “Red Cross”.

Stage 3: long- term recovery.

• Rebuilding needed to put countries back on their feet.


• Countries were too poor to recover on their own
• Money, equipment and technical expertise were need
• New schools,hospitals,houses and roads were needed
• Aid was provided by countries and charities such as oxfam
