From portrayals of life transitions to bugs sitting on a video lens, the faculty art exhibit has something for everyone. Senior Lecturer in Art and Studio Head of Photography Robert Miller and Assistant Professor of Art and Studio Head of Painting Cara Tomlinson star in this years faculty art exhibit with a wide array of complex and inspirational works. The crowd at the opening reception was shoulder to shoulder Thursday, Jan. 20th, as Miller and Tomlinson unleashed their talent upon the Lewis & Clark population. Lets call it Hipster Nation. No, lets call it Weirdmerica. Wait, no, Portlandia! The apathetic weirdo lifestyle here in Portland is now being depicted in Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownsteins (Sleater-Kin-
ney) brainchild, Portlandia. The sketch comedy premiered on the Independent Film Channel last Friday night and is scheduled to run for an initial six episodes. The show is the spawn of Armisen and Brownsteins experience running around Portland, and exploiting its fun quirks and joyous eccentricities during the summer
of 2009. After a set of webisodes entitled Thunderant went viral, the project was picked up by producer Lorne Michaels and developed into a full show. The first episode is full of Portland references, including a walk down SE Lincoln, pretension and tension in a feminist bookshop with a cameo by Steve Bus-

competes against them for the title of Most Glorious Facial Hair (true story), there must be more than enough material to turn a towns lifestyle into a full-length TV show. Portlandia gives us a moment to
reflect, to laugh at ourselves and most importantly, to cherish and appreciate how weird this place can really be. While the backlash may eventually be negative, imagine snickers like, Oh, you live in Portland? You mean Portlandia, the show has been well received so far in the selfcentered City of Roses. The shows premier at the Hollywood Theater, which featured a Q & A session with Armisen and Brownstein, was sold out. McMenamins Mission Theater located on NW Glisan will be showing the next episode for free today at 10:30 (21+) A string of Portlandia themed parties have also sprung up in celebration of our citys uniqueness. Shady downtown watering hole Captain Ankenys has been sponsoring Portlandia parties with a bohemian dress code theme. Said party-goer Canaan Schlesinger (13), People from the spirit of the 90s promotional music video were there including the midget and the clown on the double bikes. It just goes to show how close-knit our weird, lovable town can be. Until next Friday, keep Portland weird, and viva Portlandia!
