3.4 Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics 3.4.4 D. Describe the composition and structure of the universe and the earths place in Recognize earths place in the solar system. Explain and illustrate the causes of seasonal changes. Identify planets in our solar system and their general characteristics. Describe the solar system motions and use them to explain time (e.g., days, seasons), major lunar phases and eclipses.

Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms)

The student will be able to take information learned about the solar system and create a 3-5 minute presentation of the information to their peers. The students will create a presentation using PowerPoint or Prezi presentations as a visual aide to present their topics.
Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)

The teacher will determine if the lessons objectives have been met by using a teacher made rubric. The students will complete peer evaluation forms on each others presentation. The teacher will have the peer evaluation forms created prior to this activity. The evaluation form will include the following questions: o Was the information easy to understand? o Did the speaker speak clearly and use an appropriate voice level? o What is one thing that you would like to learn more about? o What is one thing you learned from this presentation? o The students will also say one thing that they liked about the persons presentation.
Materials:

Teacher made rubric Peer evaluation forms Computers for students to create their presentations

PowerPoint / Prezi software on computers Sites for students to research Tutorials for how to use PowerPoint / Prezi
Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:

Allow for some students to have a shorter presentation (1-2 minutes) Touch screen computers Allow time for students to practice their presentations in front of their peers.
Enrichment Techniques:

Allow students to add special effects and different features to their slides. Allow students to assist with other students who are having difficulties with this assignment.
Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):

Provide examples of complete presentations for the students to see Provide tutorials for how to use Prezi/PowerPoint Model how to correctly create a presentation (show appropriate voice level, and pace) There will be the assistance of the classroom teacher, the computer teacher, and the special education teacher Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:

To begin the lesson the teacher and the students will discuss the students experiences with PowerPoint. The students will be able to share different types of projects they have had the chance to create using PowerPoint. The teacher will then ask the students if they have ever used Prezi. If any students have used Prezi the students will have the chance to share their experiences. The students will then be asked to write 4 facts about the solar system and 1 opinion about the solar system. The teacher will have the students share facts (real information) about the solar system and opinions (their thoughts and feelings) about the solar system. The teacher will then tell the students that today they are going to be creating Prezi/PowerPoint presentations based on facts they find about the solar system.
Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities

This lesson is going to take at least 3 days to complete with the students The first day the teacher will review the project with the students and provide examples of proficient presentations. The teacher will provide the students with a rubric and review the rubric so students can understand all criteria they are going to be graded on. The teacher will provide time for students to ask questions about the assignment. The teacher should then model how to present a proficient project. Allow students to begin creating their presentations. Review the rubric and allow students time to create flashcards and practice what they are going to say with a peer. The students will be given 5 minutes to present their information to their peers. Peers should complete a peer feedback form for each student. The teacher will complete a rubric for the grading process
Closure:

To end the class the students will complete an exit slip assessing their experience with Prezi/PowerPoint. The questions the students will answer include How did you like this activity? How do you feel your presentation turned out? How do you feel about using Prezi?
