LEMON TREE
40
Fool’s Garden

I'm sitting here in a boring room

It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I'm wasting my time, I got nothing to do
I'm hanging around, I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder

I'm driving around in my car

I'm driving too fast, I'm driving too far
I'd like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely, I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder

I wonder how, I wonder why

Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning, turning, turning, turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just another lemon tree

I'm sitting here, I miss the power

I'd like to go out, taking a shower
But there's a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired, put myself into bed
Where nothing ever happens and I wonder

Isolation is not good for me

Isolation, I don't want to sit on a lemon tree

I'm stepping around in a desert of joy

Baby anyhow I'll get another toy
And everything will happen and you'll wonder

I wonder how, I wonder why

Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
I'm turning my head up and down
Turning, turning, turning, turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree

And I wonder, I wonder,

I wonder how, I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see
And all that I can see
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DOLLAR

James Cash is a very rich man – in fact, he's a multi-

millionaire. He is thirty-five years old and lives in a
mansion in the country. He is the chairman of a big
company.
Every day he has breakfast in bed. He usually has
boiled eggs and champagne! He makes phone calls and
reads the newspapers at breakfast time. Then he gets
dressed. His servants help him. He always wears a smart
suit to the office.
At seven o'clock his chauffeur drives him to his
office. He has business meetings every morning. Every

afternoon he looks at the sales reports. Sales go up every

year because business is good.
In the evenings he likes to entertain important
business clients. They often go to his favourite night club,
Madame JoJo's. They have dinner, drink champagne and
watch a cabaret.
At two o'clock in the morning his chauffeur drives
him home. He goes to bed half an hour later, and dreams
about sales figures. James is always exhausted. The next
day is exactly the same. Would you want a job like his?

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD!

Our Universe is a fantastic place indeed! In

ancient times, people thought the Earth was the
center of the Universe. Now everyone knows that
the Earth goes around the Sun.
The Sun is the source of life on our planet. It
gives us almost everything we need. It gives light
and heat. However the Sun doesn’t only bring life,

it makes people’s life more enjoyable. We enjoy

watching the Sun when it rises in the east and sets
in the west. It is really a breathtaking view!
Although our planet is a very small part of
the Universe it is full of wonders. It has 6
continents surrounded by big oceans. The oceans
exist because hundreds of rivers flow into them.
The longest river in the world is the Nile River,
which flows for more than 4,000 miles in Africa.
The largest river in the world is the Amazon River
in South America. It carries more water than any
other river and flows into the Atlantic Ocean!
So the world we live in is really amazing.
And it never stays the same because it keeps
changing all the time!

DINNER DISASTER

Mr. and Mrs. Smith both loved cooking. Mr. Smith also
wanted a better job in his company. They decided it was time
for a dinner party. Mr. Smith phoned his new boss Mr.
Plummer and invited him and his wife to dinner on Friday
night.
On Friday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent a long
time cooking a delicious dinner. They prepared fresh salmon,
filled with prawns and chilli. They laid the table with silver
candles and bottles of wine.
Then, they got ready. Mrs. Smith put on a black evening
dress and Mr. Smith wore his best suit. Everything was perfect.
The Plummers arrived on time at eight o'clock. "Let's
have a drink!" said Mr. Smith. They all went into the dining
room. Then they saw the table and they were horrified. The
main plate was empty. The salmon had gone!
Mrs. Smith burst into tears. "Don't worry, love! We can
still have fish!" and Mr. Smith rushed out of the house.
He ran to the Fish and Chip shop down the road and
bought four portions of fish and chips. The great British
takeaway! And they all had a lovely evening. So did their pet
cat ...

A SPANISH RESTAURANT

Diane: Hi, Joe. Where were you last

month?
Joe: Oh, hi, Diane. I was on vacation in
California.
Diane: California? What was it like?
Joe: Fantastic! The weather was beautiful
and the ocean was very warm.
Diane: What was the hotel like?
Joe: Excellent! There was a swimming
pool and a private beach.
Diane: Was your wife Monica with you?
Joe: Yes. She loves the sun.
Diane: What about your children? Were they with you?
Joe: No, they weren’t. They were with their grandparents in Chicago.
Diane: Did you and Monica go out for dinner every night?
Joe: Yes, we especially liked Casa Pedro – a small Spanish restaurant across the
street. It was very popular with tourists and
it was always crowded.
Diane: Was it trendy and expensive?
Joe: No, it wasn’t. The interior was simple
and light. The tables weren’t too close
together and the chairs were comfortable
and we liked the atmosphere – so friendly
147
and relaxed. The music wasn’t too loud. And it was fairly cheap, only about $20 per
person with wine. It was my favorite place for a meal
with my wife.
Diane: Oh, really? Was the food good there?
Joe: Oh, yes. The food was very tasty. We
absolutely loved it! The choice of dishes and drinks
was fantastic.
Diane: Did you try the Spanish cuisine?
Joe: Casa Pedro is a tapas restaurant, so we chose a lot of different small dishes and
shared them. Every time we went there we tried something new. And we often
ordered the spicy Spanish sausage called chorizo. The food was always fresh and the
salads were delicious.
Diane: Did you enjoy desserts too?
Joe: I didn’t usually have dessert but Monica
said the cakes were excellent with an espresso.
Diane: Was the service good?
Joe: Yes, the chef was very friendly and the
waiters were really helpful. They were always
happy to explain the different dishes and
recommend the wine as well.

A VISIT TO AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT

I discovered this restaurant on my previous trip to

Cuba. The restaurant was voted as one of the top 10 eateries
to be visited. I tried pizza topped with eggplant, fresh
tomato, garlic, basil and cheese and was pleasantly surprised.
The pizza was the way I like it, nice and crispy. The
tomatoes were tasty and the basil was a nice touch.

On this trip I had a friend come with me from Toronto

and wanted to show him my find. We went for a late lunch
with the intent of having pizza. As we were looking at the
menu, Walter, the owner, stepped out with a huge live lobster
displaying it to the customers. We changed our minds and
decided to have the lobster and a whole red snapper as our
main course. We started with a salad of lettuce, cucumbers,
tomatoes, carrots and onions. It was really delicious.

The lobster was just simply boiled while the red

snapper was done on the grill. All the fish needed was olive
oil and salt and both were on the table. Then we ordered
baked potatoes stuffed with cheese and ham. We ate cakes for
dessert and drank tea.

My friend was in heaven as was I. What a perfect

lunch! I would strongly recommend calling for reservations.

A L I CE A S H T O N ’ S T R AVE L WE B LO G

During my 35 years as a travel writer, I have visited more countries than I can
count. I have backpacked through Asia, I have cycled through Europe, I have driven
across Africa, but I have never explored my own home, Australia. So the time has
come to put this right. Over the next ten days I am planning to explore Australia with
my two grandchildren. They, unlike me, want to get to know their own country before
they start exploring the rest of the world. Here is a diary of our travels and
adventures.

DAY 1. We have done a walking tour of Adelaide, the capital city of South
Australia and a big seaport. We have seen a lot of historical buildings and have
admired their colonial architecture.
DAY 2. We have taken a boat trip around Discovery Bay.
DAY 3. We have explored numerous caves and grottos near Cape York.
DAY 4. We have rafted on the Broken River. It has been very exciting.

169
DAY 5. We have visited a thermal reserve and have seen a few spectacular
geysers.
DAY 6. We have hiked through a canyon and have seen a number of waterfalls.
DAY 7. We've been guests at the campfire of an Aboriginal community. We
have learned a lot of interesting things about their lifestyle and culture.
DAY 8. We have seen a mob of kangaroos. They are incredibly cute.
DAY 9. In the last 8 days, we've seen and done some amazing things. But
nothing compares to the famous Uluru – the largest rock monolith in the world. For
many years, I've heard people talk about the wonderful changes in the color of the
Rock during sunset, but until you see it yourself, it's impossible to imagine.
DAY 10. We have just crossed the desert to the modern town of Alice Springs.
We are going to miss all the incredible friends we’ve made and all the breathtaking
places we’ve visited.

THAILAND - LAND OF SMILES

“Addictive!” This is how most visitors describe

Thailand. After your first visit, you just have to go back
again. Today we are speaking with Margaret who came
here with her boyfriend Eric on holiday and never went
home.
Margaret, a writer: I come from the UK but I am
living in Thailand at the moment. My boyfriend and I
only came here for a holiday but we liked it so much that
we stayed. We rented a house in the south of Thailand. I
think Thailand is a perfect place to live – it’s cheap, hot,

and inspiring.
We’ve been here for a year and I’ve written two
novels so far. Eric is happy here too. He’s had lots of
free time since we moved. He’s already done a scuba
diving course and a cookery course! We both love Thai
food so I think it’s a good idea. He has recently started
his own business – a small restaurant on the beach. But
he isn’t working there right now because he has gone
trekking in the jungle with his friends.
People often ask me what I like most about living
in Thailand. Well, apart from the weather, the food and
the relaxed lifestyle, I like the fact that it is close to

194
other interesting places. We’ve been to Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia, Bali and Malaysia. We have seen the Marble
Mountains and the caves of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.
We have walked along white sandy beaches and we
have done snorkeling around Bamboo Island in
Cambodia. We have seen a lot of exotic fish. We have also visited a great number of
Buddist temples. They have made a great impression on us. I can’t imagine my life
without Thailand.
