The Genius
of Steel
Along with the Egyptian
Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower in Paris
is one of the most fascinating
building constructions in history.
Built for the Centennial Exposition
of 1889 to commemorate the
French Revolution, the actual erection of the Tower which, at 300
metres, was then the highest in the
world initially caused a storm of
protest.
Nowadays, nobody would
dream of not admiring this stunning monument built as the result
of Gustave Eiffels genius.
If, however, Eiffel had not
recognised the advantages of steel
as a building material and if he
had not exploited those advantages this eighth wonder of the
world would never have succeeded. Nor would it have made such
a permanent impression. The Eiffel
Tower was to become the symbol
of the Industrial Age.
It is in the spirit of Gustave
Eiffels ideas that we should approach open lattice metal gratings. A
grating is nothing less than a number of holes connected by metal
strips to form an extremely stable
surface.
So why did we bring up the
Eiffel Tower when on the topic of
gratings, you may be asking?
The answer: you will find Meiser gratings in the Eiffel Tower. Not that you
would exactly stumble across them!

The Functional
Advantage
The functional advantages
of grating are much more versatile
than you may think. Starting with a
very firm surface. Compared to the
amount of material that goes into
them, gratings have an incredibly
high statical quality.
A further advantage is that
grating

constructions

can

be

assembled easily and quickly

and dismantled, too if, for whatever
reason, you wished to re-open the
area used.
Another advantage the
transparency perhaps takes
getting used to.
If you combine grating
floors with other kinds of covering,
further advantages become clear.
In the Plenary Hall of the (new)
German Parliament in the (old)
Reichstag building in Berlin, for
example, Meiser gratings were
used as the underfloor structure
for a top quality covering. The entire area is air-conditioned from
below. This also made it easy to
wire up the German deputies
desks with various telecom cables.
Not only that: as parliamentary
majorities change, so too can
groups of seats be re-arranged
without a hitch thanks to the
Meiser grating solution.

Meiser grating. As flexible

in its applications as inflexible bearing a load.

the outlay or expenditure

See cost efficient and

Take, for example, the building shown on

the left: a multilevel carpark at Zurich

would have meant four times the cost of the
grating construction.

The Cost
Advantage
Lets talk about costs or,
as the economists would say, the
required cash input. Costs are usually discussed in relation to their
benefit. How much money must I
invest and what will I get out of it?
Is there a comparable alternative
at more favourable conditions?
One purely functional benefit is that of a very firm floor surface. To achieve the same statical
values with other materials or other
designs, you would have to invest
considerably more in the first
place.
Creative architects and civil
engineers often arrive at surprisingly affordable solutions simply by
using the otherwise unusual
material of grating. And we at
Meiser in consultation with you,
of course always enjoy devising
these solutions and translating
them into reality.
Since we see ourselves as
a service oriented problem solving
company, we think and act in the
best business management and
cost oriented interest of our customers. Unfortunately or, perhaps,
fortunately we are not always the
cheapest supplier on the market.
Meiser Grating is a top-quality
name-brand product. From planning to delivery, we set the highest
possible standards on our products. Yes, you may get grating a
few Euros cheaper elsewhere but
one thing is sure: you wont find
better.

The Aesthetic
Advantage
In their time, Gustave Eiffel
or Walter Gropius provided ample
proof that steel can be deployed in
architecture to achieve interesting
and unconventional solutions. Yet
over the last few years, modern
architecture

seems

to

have

developed new creative impulses

of its own. If the 1960s and 1970s
were moulded by a rather staid
pseudo-modernism, the constructions of today with their interplay
of material and form exude greater stylistic confidence. Thus the
Pompidou Centre in Paris is no
longer dismissed as the weird and
wonderful creation of an artist with
an overheated imagination. On the
contrary, visible steel constructions have become the style elements of a new era. In all modesty,
the role of grating in this development has been a significant one.
As humble as its origins are, it harmonises astonishingly well with
wood, glass and stone no matter
whether it comes in the zinc plated
or colour accentuated look, no
matter whether it is made of aluminium or stainless steel.
All the different possibilities
offered by different mesh spacings
create truly interesting surface
structures which, depending on
the angle of observation or the
particular light conditions, convey
ever-changing effects.
We are proud to be able to
help creative architects and civil
engineers come to grips with
sophisticated questions of design.
Why dont you use our experience?

Press Locked
Gratings
Meiser press locked gratings are usually made of steel,
stainless

steel

or

aluminium.

However, other materials can be

used if the customer so wishes.
On our computer controlled
production lines, the bearing bars
are notched and, at the same time,
locked with the cross bar at very
high pressure.
This particular production
method guarantees a uniform precision mesh size.
The edge of the press
locked gratings is banded either
with T-shaped special section or
flat bar. This process i.e. where
the banding is welded at right
angles to and flush with the grating
surface is done by an automatic
resistance welding, border machine.

Although production method does not set
any limits here, in practice the length will
be predetermined by statical requirements
and unit weights.

The values shown have been calculated for
maximum admissible load rating (deflection
1/200) on the basis of a load carrying area of
200 x 200 mm and a bearing bar spacing of
33.3 mm. To avoid trip up points the maximum deflection should not exceed 4 mm.
Please note the
coloured nominal line.

* Support width =

Ultra-grating

The ultra-grating is a welded and press locked grating. First

the cross bars are pressed into the
bearing bars, then welded together
as well.
This technology provides
extra stability even without edge
banding.
Meiser produces ultra-grating in standard panels for machine
shops and fitters shops for further
processing.
Usual mesh spacing
34.3 x 33.3

Heavy Duty
Gratings

26

Heavy duty gratings are

press locked gratings. The bearing
bars and the cross bars are interlocked with one another and
then processed at a pressure of
12,000 kN.
Due to their high stability
and safety, heavy duty gratings are
used where large support widths
and high wheel loads are required.
Heavy duty gratings can be
also produced in stainless-steel.

bearing bar length max. 2500 mm

The values shown have been calculated for

maximum permissible load rating on the
basis of the relevant load carrying area and
bearing bar spacing of 50 mm.

If the gratings you order are for vehicular

use, you must give us details in advance - wheel load, load carrying area, clear span
and direction of travel so that we can calculate the grating flooring.

Louvre Gratings

Louvre gratings will always

find a use wherever people dont
want other people to look through
on bridges, gangways, elevated
walkways, ventilation grilles, balconies with sun shield function and
building exteriors.
Meiser

produces

louvre

gratings from steel, stainless steel

and aluminium. Here the cross
bars are inserted into the bearing
bars at an angle of 30 or 45 before being pressed.
We can also customise our
louvres gratings to meet your specific needs, just give us a call!
Louvre grating can be produced to a height of 100 mm.

Full press locked

louvre grating
The newly developed full
press locked louvre grating combines excellent technical qualities
with an elegant design and thus
offers a variety of new solutions
within the current louvre gratings
field.
With this grating, civil engineers and architects are given the
possibility of realising sun shield
constructions, as well as facade
constructions or gangways without
destroying the architectural concept of the building. Builders and
constructors profit from the variable insertion angle of the cross
bars, which results in better statical performance and a wider variety in use. Like the press locked
grating, the bearing bar is notched
only up to 10 mm, which guarantees consistently high load values.
This type of louvre grating
represents a highly attractive alternative.

Full Gratings

30

Full gratings are press

locked gratings with bearing bars
and cross bars of equal height and
which have been notched up to
half of their height. The bearing bar
is the one with the notches on the
top.
Full gratings are used for
escape and window balconies but
they can also be used as a sun
shield, as a building exterior, as a
honeycomb ceiling, as a ventilation
grille and as parapet railings.

* Support width =
clearance between the supports.

Cross bar

Due to the construction of

the bearing bars, press welded
gratings have a natural anti-skid
property. See page 37.
We offer press welded gratings in stainless steel with round
steel rods of 4 mm diameter.

Press Welded
Gratings
Meiser press welded gratings are produced from steel. The
bearing bars and the twisted
square cross bars are cut to grating size before the cross bars are
locked into the bearing bars at a
pressure of 1000 kN and simultaneously electrically welded with
2500 KVA. into one unit.
In combination with welded
cross bars, bearing bars make for
high torsion rigidity.
Press welded gratings are
banded with flat bars which, as a
rule, will be the same dimension as
the bearing bar.
In addition to our standard
press-welded gratings, we offer
offshore grating (O-SP-SS) and
gratings with perforated sheet,
details of which you will find on
p42.

The values shown have been calculated for
maximum admissible load rating (deflection
1/200) on the basis of a load carrying area of
200 x 200 mm and a bearing bar spacing of
33.3 mm. To avoid trip up points the maximum deflection should not exceed 4 mm.
Please note the
coloured nominal line.

Mesh Width Clearance

Clear mesh width is calculated on the basis of the

given mesh spacing and the
thickness of the material used.
Example
Spacing of 34.3 x 38.1 / bearing bar 3 mm /
cross bar 6 x 6 mm = a clearance of 31.3 x 32.3.
In the trade, this is known as a 30 x 30.

Note:
We recommend that gratings used for
vehicular access are constructed from
4/5 mm bearing bar thicknesses.

Anti-skid Gratings

Normally all gratings have

good non slip properties. However,
they can be made even safer particularly in areas where there is a
risk of oil and grease spillages or
when conditions are icy. Anti-skid
gratings. So much safer, step by
step.

Stairtreads

39

Stairtreads are produced

the same way as press locked gratings and press welded gratings.
They are banded on each
side with flat bar which has been
drilled for fixing to the stair stringers.
As a rule, the demands
made on stairtreads in terms of
anti-slip capabiltiy are higher than
on gratings. Which is why Meiser
treads

are

produced

with

perforated safety nosing. This is

not only safer for the people using
the stairs; it also contributes generally to a ore stable structure.
Needless to say, Meiser
stairtreads comply with DIN 24531
and can be supplied in either steel,
stainless steel or aluminium.

Shelf Gratings

40

Used in the construction of

high rack systems, grating based
shelves have key advantages compared to other shelve systems.
Apart from the high statical
values of grating one great benefit
is that you can see what is on the
shelves from underneath.
Another significant benefit
is that in the event of a fire starting
the sprinkler system will be able to
get water through to the seat of the
fire.
When it comes to producing the shelves, we suggest that
angle collars or special notchings
be specified: as they are useful as
extra-high banding and stop things
falling off the shelf.

Comb grating
Comb gratings are enclosed pressure locked gratings, with
cross bars which protrude above
the surface of the grating. The
cross bars are pressed into the
notched bearing bars on center-tocenter spacings of 11.1 mm, 16.65
mm and 22.2 mm. The standard
spacing between the bearing bars
is 100 mm, but can be varied to
suit the end users loading requirements. The gratings are designed
for pedestrian access.
Meiser comb gratings are
suitable for various applications:
Facades, such as sun screens,
drainage channels and air grills; As
ventilation grilles used in air conditioning and heating engineering,
on inlet and outlet elements of air
conditioning and heating units; As
covers for overflow channels, in
swimming pools.
Comb gratings of the type
linear are available in steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Other
types are available in aluminium.

Offshore gratings
(O-SP-SS)
As its name suggests, offshore grating was originally develo-

ting wich has been strengthened

by round bars welded beneath the
twisted cross bars and in the same
direction as the bearing bars (see
photo to the right).
O-SP-SS has a mesh spacing of 38.28 mm x 101.6 mm. The
additional 7 mm bar welded to
the underside of the twist bars, is
designed to prevent a 15 mm
test ball from falling through.
The O-SP-SS range can be
manufactured from 20 x 2 mm up
to 60 x 5 mm bearing bars.

Press welded grating

with perforated sheet
We offer a special form of
press-welded gratings in 6000 x
1000 mm mats, with a perforated
sheet welded between the bearing
bars.
The 1.2 mm thick perforated sheet has 8 x 8 mm square
openings spaced at 4 mm intervals
and is manufactured with a profiled
edge for resistance welding.
Cross bar possible in SP
anti- skid design.
Mesh division of 34.3 x 38.1
mm is possible.

Barefoot gratings
The thing is, though, there
are shoeless areas where grating
can come in quite handy at
swimming pools, for instance.
Reason enough for Meiser to
develop a grating which is even
kind to the bare foot!
Bearing bar measurement
30 x 2 mm up to 60 x 2 mm
30 x 3 mm up to 60 x 3 mm
The cross bar is a flat-pressed U-shaped banding. The clearance between these treads is
around 14 mm or 6 mm.
They can be manufactured
in steel, galvanised or powder coated.

Tree gratings
Meiser tree gratings are
basically press locked gratings.
Tree gratings can be seamlessly built into pavements and
thus increase the area available to
pedestrians. These gratings enable
trees to be given a superior
maintenance, ventilation and watering service. They even protect the
tree roots.
Meiser can

Finned gratings
Finned gratings are both
decorative and practical. Which is
why they are suitable for many different of purposes.
As a rule, they are used as
ventilation covers for underfloor
convection heating system and as
overflow channels at swimming
pools.
In our finned gratings we
have replaced the cross bar with a
pipe.
The standard form comes
without edging, however if required it can be supplied with edging.
In both cases the ends of the pipes
are left open to ensure a maximum
corrosion resistance.
Finned gratings can be
supplied in a variety of material,
profile and colour. The bearing
bars can be produced also with SP
anti-skid material.

Fence gratings

Fences
Robust and with a whole
range of interesting design possibilities, ultra-gratings are an excellent alternative for use as fencing
in the garden, on the building site
or as a crowd barrier in football
stadiums.
Whether you choose the
zinc plated option or any of the
usual RAL colours, Meiser gratings
are both durable and aesthetically
pleasing. The bearing bars are
configured vertically parallel to the
fence posts. Different mesh spacing options permit different fence
designs.
Fence planks are Ultra-gratings, in which the filler bars are

pressed and welded to the cross

bars at the crossover points. These

A further quality feature
with Meiser gratings is their long
service life which is partly the
result of meticulous surface treatment during production.
The various possibilities
from the purely expedient to the
high-grade underpin the unique
aesthetic appearance of grating
applications.

Engineering
and service
When you consider the
exact definition of Engineering
and Service, it soon becomes
clear why we at Meiser link the two
words. Service means more to us
than just a friendly relationship
with the customer. To us, service
means offering our customers the
highest quality in addition to the
most cost effective product with a
delivery timescale to match our
customers expectations.
All this begins with Meiser
offering you a truly extensive planning service. The idea is actually
quite simple. As grating specialists, we like to think we can plan a
grating application quicker and
better than a planner who only
deals occasionally with grating or,
possibly, not at all.
We are always doubly inspired when asked to solve unusual
problems. In other words, we dont
just adapt your ideas to our facilities; we use our capabilities to find
new solutions.
We see new problems not
just as an interesting engineering
challenge but also as a chance to
improve ourselves as a company
and to evolve further.
Provide us with a challenge.
Make our day!

The manufacture of steel

staircases requires a high degree
of flexibility and craftsmanship.
And so we integrate these factors
with cost efficient production to
offer you the customer solutions
which are at once attractive and
affordable.
We consider a solution successful only if it meets current
regulations and if it contributes
significantly to the overall aesthetic
effect.

Staircase users are probably more interested in the quality of
the steps than say, the engineering
skills that went into the manufactu-

Outdoors, it is advisable to
use materials which can withstand
variable weather conditions and
provide the required anti-slip protection whether wet, icy or snowy.
Indoors, the designer or the

means the only designs available.
