Hunting and Fishing Licenses Older Pennsylvanians may purchase yearly hunting and fishing licenses at reduced rates

of $13.70 for a hunting license and $11.70 for a fishing license. Lifetime licenses are available at $51.70 for hunting and $51.70 for fishing. If you purchased a senior lifetime license before Jan. 1, 1991, you are not required to purchase a trout stamp. If you purchased a senior lifetime license after Jan. 1, 1991, you are required to purchase a trout stamp for $9.70. Dog Licenses In most counties, senior citizens may purchase dog licenses for reduced fees, paying lower fees for spayed or neutered dogs than for productive dogs. Lifetime licenses are available for a one-time fee. To qualify for a lifetime dog license, the dog must be tattooed with a number on the right hind leg, upper part of inner thigh. The tattooists fee is additional. Contact your county courthouse for current local fees. Transportation Services People 65 or older can take advantage of free transit service on local established routes for buses, trollies and rapid transit lines with appropriate identification. Area agencies on aging also provide transportation for older people who have special needs, or live in areas where regular mass transit services are not available. You can use this service for rides to senior centers, medical appointments and social agencies.

Reduced Automobile Registrations Under this program certain retired people can register their vehicles for an annual $10 fee, instead of the usual $36. The prime source for information on services and programs that benefit older adults in Pennsylvania is the Department of Aging. This department operates 52 agencies serving all 67 counties in the state. Heres a sample of what the department can do for you: Telephone Reassurance someone will call you every day to ask about your needs and to bring you up to date on community events. Transportation rides can be provided to your doctors office or to a social service agency. The department also can help you with employment, placement and casework services, information on senior centers and clubs in your area, adult day care centers, and much more. rEBatEs, DiscoUnts & otHEr BEnEfits

People 65 or older are entitled to certain discounts and rebates from the state. Here are some ways to save money: Prescription Assistance The Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly, or PACE, which is funded by the state lottery, pays for all but the first $6 of medicines ($9 for brand-name drugs) prescribed by a physician. If you are 65 or older and have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 90 days and have an annual income up to $14,500 if you are single or $17,700 if you are married, you may be eligible for this program. Seniors whose incomes exceed those limits and earn up to $23,500 for individuals and $31,500 for married couples receive benefits under a second tier called the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly Needs Enhancement Tier or PACENET. To receive benefits under PACENET, seniors first must pay a monthly premium about $32 per person. PACENET then pays all but the first $8 for generic drugs and $15 for brand-name drugs prescribed by a physician. Property Tax/Rent Rebate People 65 or older, or widowed and 50 or older, with limited incomes may be eligible to receive a partial refund for propert y taxes or rent payments made during a calendar year. When calculating their total household income, seniors may exclude half of their Social Security or federal Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits. Depending on income, rent and tax costs, rebates can be as high as $650, or even higher if you live in Pittsburgh, Scranton or Philadelphia, or if your property taxes are at least 15 percent of your income.
