Cords Design Safety Guide - Definitions


Cords include but are not limited to; drawstrings, belts, ties, sashes, and bungee cords. Safety Concern: Potential safety concern if cord is caught in playground equipment, a bus door, fences, tree branches, etc.. Defined as: a textile or non-textile material braided, twisted, fused or woven together. Including but not limited to a sash, drawstring, tie or belt which can be permanently attached to the garment or independent/removable from the garment CORD TYPES FUNCTIONAL: NON-FUNCTIONAL: (decorative) Alters the shape or size of the garment (adjustable). Secured to the garment in a way not to allow the size or shape of the garment to be altered. Purpose is to provide a decorative element to the garment ONLY. Tie: Exposed and permanently attached to the garment Belt: Exposed and removable from the garment

Drawstring: Encased in a channel within the garment

Sharp Points and Edges


Safety Concern: potential injury for cuts or skin puncture by a trim component. Defined as: a trim component sharp to the touch, or that activates a sharp points or edge tester. Requirement, Sizes 0-16: All accessible trims; no sharp points or edges allowed before and after Use and Abuse testing.

Safety Concern: potential choking hazard if trim component becomes accessible and is swallowed by a child.
Defined as: a trim component able to fit completely into a specially designed test cylinder (2.25 long by 1.25 wide, shown at left). Cylinder mimics the approximate size of the fully expanded throat of a child. Requirement, Sizes 0-5T; All accessible trims must either meet Targets Use and Abuse test requirements, or be unable to fit into a small parts cylinder.

Allowed Strand length from WB may not exceed the following: 10 for 12M-24M, 12 for 2T-5T. Not allowed for 0-9M. Each strand to be doubled over at waist and stitched 2-3 times.
