Who can Back Up Data

You must have certain permissions or user rights Only administrators, backup operators, and server operator groups are allowed to back up data by default on local servers You cannot back up your files if there are disk quota restrictions Access to backup files can also be restricted For security, backup and restore rights can be segregated into two groups Backup files and directories GPO located in Computer Configuration

You can back up the following system components
When this component is included in SystemState Registry Always Boot files, including the system files Always Certification Services database If it is a Certificate Services Server Active Directory directory service If it is a Domain SYSVOL Directory If it is a Domain Controller Cluster service information If it is within a cluster IIS metadirectory If it is installed System files that are under Windows Always File Protection

Using the Backup utility, you can
 Back up files and folders  Back up System State Data  Schedule a backup

Using Volume Shadow copyin Backup

 Create shadow copy backups of volumes including all open files  Ensure that files that changed during backup process are copied corectly

You can back up various types of media You must have appropriate permissions and user rights

Types of Backup
Backup types defines what data is backed up Backup types use archive attributes that show the file has changed since the last backup When a file is modified, the archive attribute is set, and when you back up the file, the archive attribute is cleared or reset.

 Back up System State data  Back up files to a files or a tape  Run batch files

Important Limitations using batch files

 You can bac up entire foldrs only  You cannot use wildcard characters

Automated System Recovery

A recovery option in the Backup utility that contains two parts: ASR backup and asr restore Can back up the operating system Does not include data files Creates a floppy dis, which contains information about
 Backup location data  Disk configurations iincluding basic and dynamic volumes0  How to accomplish a restore procedure

Choose the all information on this computer option, it will back up all data including System State Data.

Backing up data files or System state

Procedure On the Start menu, point to All programs, prompt Accessories, point to system tools and click backup On the welcome page of the Backup or Restore wizard, click the Advanced Mode link In the Backup Utility dialog box, on the Backup tab, on the Job menu, click New Under Click to select the checkbox for any drive, folder or file, click the box net to each file or folder, click the box next to System state

Procedure
In the Backup destination box, do one of the following
 Select File if you to back up files and foders to a file  Select a tape device

In the Backup media or file name box

 If you are backing up files and folders to a file, type the path and file name for backup(.bkf) or click Browse  If you are backing up files and folders to tape, choose the tape you want to use

To select backup options, on Tools menu, click options and then select backup type and log file type Click Start Backup and then make changes in Backup Job Information dialog box.
