Background:
Child sexual abuseA dark secretA black traumaYes, black trauma because experiences of childhood remain fresh for a lifetime till the last nail in the coffin is putThe startling fact is that every second a child in India experiences this black traumaYes, thats right - 53% children in India are sexually abused

According to Childline, India has the worlds largest number of sexually abused children; with a child below 16 years raped every 155th minute A child below 10 abused every 13th hour And one in every 10 children sexually abused at any point of time.

This black trauma is locked in the dark secret mazes of childrens minds and the keys are thrown in a deep ocean bed, which lays buried in the subconscious mind. Once in a while the black trauma manifests in different abnormal behavior patterns in real life situations. The reason: The statistics paint a very grim picture and some action is required as soon as possible. Statistics of prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse in India
a) The first ever National Study on Child Abuse in April 2007

by Minister for Women and Child Development shows these stark reality figures:

More than 53% children report facing one or more forms of sexual abuse Almost 22% faced severe sexual abuse, 6% were sexually assaulted 50% of sexual offenders were known to the victim or were in positions of trust (family member, close relative, friend or neighbour). Onset of abuse is from 5 years of age Boys were equally at risk as girls Severest sexual abuse in age group of 11-16 years 73% of sexual abuse victims were in age groups of 11-18 years
b) Tulir - CPHCSAs study in 2006, conducted among 2211 school going

children in Chennai, indicates a CSA prevalence rate of 42%. Children of all socioeconomic groups were found to be equally vulnerable; while 48% of boys reported having been abused, the prevalence rate among girls was 39%. Fifteen percent of both boys and girls had been severely abused.
c) Survey conducted in 2001 by SAVE THE CHILDREN, Sweden found

that 68% children had faced physical abuse; 46.6% faced severe abuse leading to injuries; 32.2% had their private parts touched by the abuser; and 20% were forced to have sexual intercourse.
d) In a survey with 350 school girls in New Delhi by Sakshi in 1997, 63%

had experienced CSA at the hands of family members; and 25% of the girls had either been raped, made to masturbate the perpetrator or engage in oral sex.
e) Another 1997 study on middle and upper class women from Chennai,

Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Goa by RAHI revealed that 76% of respondents had been sexually abused as children, with 71% been abused either by relatives or by someone they knew and trusted.

f) Samvadas 1996 study on students in Bangalore states that 47% of

the respondents had been sexually abused; 62% of whom had been raped once and 38% of whom had suffered repeatedly.
g) Childline: - An estimated 150 million girls and 73 million boys under

18 years of age experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual violence during 2002.

The purpose:
How to avoid bad touch? It is said that prevention is better than cure. The irreversible impact of CSA can be nipped in the bud if we really take this cause seriously. The only way is to prepare our children to handle the worst case scenarioand teach children the fundamentals of touches. There is no magic wand to ward of all possible untoward incidences related to child sexual abuse but we can make an effort. One of the ways is to educate children with the help of films like chuppi todo that talk about fundamentals of rules related to safe touch and unsafe touch. A qualitative analysis was carried out in mogolepuri Delhi. Details in

FGDs were organized with the help of an NGO Baliga Trust (the Partner unit of Plan India) working in this area. Two FGDs were conducted with 12 participants in each. The FGDs were conducted with: 1) A homogenous group called Nanhi Toli with the age group 12-14 years 2) An adolescent group called Vazood Group with age group 15-18 years In-depth unstructured interviews of Nanhi Toli and Vazood Group In-depth unstructured interviews of members of Nanhi Toli and Vazood Group were conducted. The interviews were one-to-one keeping the sensitive nature of the topic. Ragini (name changed) mama-tau hamein achi tarah janete hai and hamara fayda bhi uthat sakte hain(You are not vulnerable to outsiders as they dont know much about you. You should be careful of your uncles and close relatives as they have access to you and they know you well. That is why it is important to know about rules of touch ) Pooja (name changed): Chote bachcho ko iski jankari honi chaheyeki kya galat spash ahi anur kya sahi sparh hai ( children should know what is a good touch and bad touch Ritu (name changed) Mime ki wajha se hamein pat chalta hai ki sahi saparh kya and hamara confidence bhi bdhta hai ( because of the mime performance the level of awareness has increased manifold and due to which our confidence level has increased,) The data was collected till saturation point of divergence reached. Parents in-depth unstructured interviews: In-depth interviews of parents were also taken to asses the level of openness and awareness about child sexual abuse. The purpose was to understand the level of awareness related to good touch and bad touch in the context of child sexual abuse. Pushpa -parent hamare bachche mar nahi kha sakte, humne training di haijaise hum miya bibi ke beach bat hoti hai waise he khule baat ki hai bachcho se ( our children cannot be abused

as the have been trained by usthe way chat happens between husband and wife we are open to discussion with our children) Poonam-parent- Sahi chuna kya hai, galat chuna kya hi bachchon ko pata hona chahiye (what is good touch and what is a bad touch children should know) The data was collected till saturation point of divergence reached. In-depth unstructured interview of Head of NGO working in Mangolpuri: Ashok we came across an incident when children complained about sexual abuse at school in this areawe took swift action and got teachers involved suspended immediately and later the teacher was dismissedapart from that we used come across incidence of child sexual abuse so we decided to take concrete action. As a part of strategy we oraganised a mime show performed by children of magolepuri. The mime gave us the platform that helped us to talk about sensitive issue like child sexual abuse openly The data was collected till saturation point of divergence reached. FGD summary FGD Nanhi Toli: There were 12 participants in the age group 12-14 years. There was no inhibition about the topic related to child sexual abuse among any of the participants as some of them were part of the mime performing group about CSA and the rest of them had seen the mime performance many times. The level of understating about CSA was excellent among the participants. Rules of touches related to CSA were also extremely clear.

Summary report analysis of FGD Nanhi Toli: The mime has a positive impact on the group They are well aware of types of touches, bad, good and confusing touch They are very proud of this fact that they are part of Mime group or part of nanhi toil The mime performance has given them confidence level They know how to handle odd situation related to child sexual abuse. They are quite open to the idea of discussing about Child sexual abuse with the parents Field workers have great role to play for this awareness They know how to use child line 1098

From time to time they are in touch Juvenile welfare officer

FGD Vazood Group: There were twelve participants in the age group 14-18 years. They were hesitant in the beginning but opened up gradually and started discussing about the issue of CSA. One of the participants came up with an instance of someone trying to touch her friend and how she resisted. They decided to take up this issue and informed the NGO working in the local area. Summary report analysis of FGD Vazood Group: The level of awareness was excellent related to rules of CSA. Moreover, the children also know how to handle the situation related to CSA. Level of awareness about child line was also good. They even knew about Juvenile Welfare Officer and CWC. The group meetings give them opportunity to discuss and share the feeling any issue major or minor

Hypotheses:
1. The level of awareness related to CSA is very high in K and L blocks of Mangolpuri area of Delhi. 2. Mime as a means of communication has worked beautifully in Mangolpuri area and this can be replicated in other areas 3. The children know how to handle abuser and they know how to use child line.
